Vi ropar på vhf:en efter en vattentaxi som strax kommer och hämtar oss. Väl iland möts vi av mängder av sjölejon och galapagosleguaner. De finns verkligen precis överallt! Simmande i vattnet, på bänkar, trappor, i båtar, stigarna vi går på och på bryggorna. De är totalt orädda för oss människor och vet att vi inte gör dem illa. Här är det djuren som får ta plats och vi får inrätta oss efter dem. Sjölejonen hörs högt och tydligt när de ropar och flera är aktiva i vattnet. Men många ligger och slöar i skuggan. Ett sjölejon vi ser gör allt vad det kan för att ta död på en blåsfisk som blåst upp sig till en boll, stor som en tennisboll.
We call on the VHF for a water taxi that will come and pick us up soon. Once ashore, we are met by multitudes of sea lions and Galapagos iguanas. They really are everywhere! Swimming in the water, on benches, stairs, in boats, the paths we walk on and on the docks. They are totally unafraid of us humans and know that we do them no harm. Here, it is the animals who get to take their place and we get to arrange ourselves after them. The sea lions are heard loud and clear when they call and several are active in the water. But many are lazing in the shade. A sea lion we see is doing everything it can to kill a blowfish that has blown itself up into a ball, the size of a tennis ball.

Leguanerna är havsleguaner endemiska för Galapagos, precis som de flesta djur här. De är duktiga simmare och lever på, framförallt, alger som de hittar i havet. När de är på land ligger de mest och slöar mitt framför fötterna på oss. Så det gäller att se var vi sätter fötterna.
The iguanas are marine iguanas endemic to the Galapagos, just like most of the animals here. They are good swimmers and live on, above all, algae that they find in the sea. When they are on land, they mostly lie down and laze right in front of our feet. So we have to see where we put our feet.

Hamnen ligger en bit bort från stan och vi går mot den lilla byn. Landskapet är svart av lava men med mycket grönska. Isabella skall vara ca 1 miljon år gammal så här har grönskan lagt sig, i alla fall på den södra sidan av ön dit regnet kommer. Det finns fem vulkaner på ön, alla mer eller mindre aktiva. Senaste utbrottet var 2021. Byn är sömnig på ett charmigt sätt med gator av sand och ett flertal restauranger och häftiga barer längs med stranden. Här tar vi en drink i solnedgången och njuter av atmosfären.
The port is a bit away from the town and we walk towards the small village. The landscape is black with lava but with lots of greenery. Isabella is supposed to be about 1 million years old, so this is where the greenery has settled, at least on the southern side of the island where the rain comes. There are five volcanoes on the island, all more or less active. The last eruption was in 2021. The village is sleepy in a charming way with streets of sand and several restaurants and cool bars along the beach. Here we have a drink at sunset and enjoy the atmosphere.

Sitter ombord på Vilja helt ensam och njuter. Det är kul med vänner ombord men det är också trångt. Och att få egentid är verkligen uppskattat och välbehövligt. Lite nagelvård, dusch, lyssna på bok mm mm. Underbart! Jag njuter!

Under tiden är Jan, Marie och Niklas på utflykt. De åker till något som kallas Túneles. Ett naturligt labyrintsystem i lava som ser ut som tunnlar. Vattnet är riktigt klart och de får simma med stora sköldpaddor. Under snorklingen ser de också sjöhästar och unika Galapagos hajar som kan ligga stilla på botten och vila utan att vara i ständig rörelse, vilket de flesta hajar behöver. En riktigt bra utflykt om man gillar att snorkla.
Meanwhile, Jan, Marie and Niklas are on an excursion. They go to something called Túneles. A natural lava labyrinth system that looks like tunnels. The water is really clear and they get to swim with big turtles. While snorkeling, they also see seahorses and unique Galapagos sharks that can lie still on the bottom and rest without being in constant motion, which most sharks need. A really good excursion if you like snorkeling.

Ny dag och ny utflykt, endast halvdag idag. Vi åker in till hamnen och när vi väntar på båt och guide får vi underhållning av en jättesöt liten pingvin som simmar runt i hamnen. Båten tar oss till lavaön Tintoreras. På vägen dit gör vi stopp där vi kommer helt i närheten av flera pingviner. Åååh, vad söta pingvinerna är. Flera står i givakt och bryr sig inte det minsta om att vi är alldeles i närheten. Några andra simmar runt båten.
New day and new excursion, only half day today. We go into the harbor and while we wait for the boat and guide we are entertained by a very cute little guinea pig that swims around the harbor. The boat takes us to the lava island of Tintoreras. On the way there, we make a stop where we come very close to several penguins. Oh, how cute the penguins are. Several are standing guard and don’t care in the least that we are very close. A few others swim around the boat.

Strax därefter kommer vi till höjdpunkten, Bluefooted Boobies! Det är en hel liten koloni av sjöfågeln ”Blåfotade sulor”. Färgen på fötterna får de av sillen de äter. Som i sin tur äter en speciell sorts alger som ger färgen. Turen avslutas med en vandring där vi ser mängder av leguaner som bygger bon att lägga sina ägg i. Deras äggläggningsperiod har precis startat så vi har tur som kommer hit innan de stänger ön för besök.
Soon after, we come to the highlight, the Bluefooted Boobies! There is a whole small colony of the seabird ”Blue-footed soles”. The color of their feet they get from the herring they eat. Which in turn eats a special kind of algae that gives the color. The tour ends with a hike where we see loads of iguanas building nests to lay their eggs in. Their egg laying period has just started so we are lucky to get here before they close the island to visitors.

Dagarna på Isabella har tagit slut och nu seglar vi mot nästa ö – Floreana. En liten ö med endast 200 invånare. Solen skiner, havet är djupblått och himmelen ljusblå med enstaka vita moln

Sista nattpasset på denna segling. Imorgon bitti kommer vi fram till ankringsviken vid ön Santa Cruz i Galapagos. En ögrupp bestående av 18 öar som tillhör Ecuador. Här finns ett helt unikt djurliv. Jag har drömt om att komma hit sedan jag var sex år gammal och nu är vi nästan där!
Last night shift on this sailing. Tomorrow morning we will arrive at the anchorage bay at the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. An archipelago consisting of 18 islands belonging to Ecuador. There is a completely unique animal life here. I have dreamed of coming here since I was six years old and now we are almost there!

Idag har vi börjat städa en massa i och utanpå Vilja. Klockan 11.00 kommer det 8-10 tjänstemän ombord som kommer djudyka in i alla skrymslen och vrår för att genomsöka Vilja på småkryp, narkotika, smuts, medicin, påväxt på skrovet mm mm. Hoppas vi blir godkända utan klagomål.
Today we have started cleaning a lot inside and outside Vilja. At 11.00 there will be 8-10 officials on board so they will deep dive into all the nooks and crannies to carry out Vilja on small insects, drugs, dirt, medicine, growth on the hull, etc. Hope we get approved without complaints.

Nu ikväll blev det lite dramatik. Vi var på väg att lägga oss och första vakten skulle börja. Plötsligt hörs ett motorljud och någon som visslar högt. Det är en liten fiskebåt som ropar och gestikulerar. Det är svårt att förstå vad de vill. Vi har redan upptäckt tre blinkande lampor och de dirigerar i riktning mitt emellan två av dem. De pekar på fiskenät ombord i deras båt och vi förstår att de vill att vi skall segla så vi inte fastnar i näten och förstör dem. Vi håller kursen de visat oss och de följer oss hela vägen tills vi har passerat. Både de och vi är nog lättade att vi inte fastnat i näten.
Tonight there was a bit of drama. We were about to go to bed and the first watch was about to start. Suddenly an engine sound is heard and someone whistles loudly. It is a small fishing boat that shouts and gestures. It is difficult to understand what they want. We have already detected three flashing lights and they are routing in the direction midway between two of them. They point to fishing nets on board their boat and we understand that they want us to sail so we don’t get caught in the nets and destroy them. We keep the course they showed us and they follow us all the way until we have passed. Both they and we are probably relieved that we didn’t get caught in the nets.

Nu har vi bara 0.11° kvar till ekvatorn. Det blir inatt någon gång. Då får vi se vad Neptun hittar på. Champagne kommer det bli i alla fall. Det känns mäktigt och overkligt att vi skall korsar ekvatorn med Vilja. Niklas sitter på vakt och vi väcks strax efter midnatt. Nu närmar det sig….Neptun sitter redan på akterdäck med sin treudd och är redo att döpa oss. Klockan 00.36 den 11:e februari korsar vi. På plottern står det 0.00.000. Vi är här! Otroligt! Neptun gör sig redo och häller en fruktansvärd stinkande vätska över oss när vi döps. Champagnen öppnas med en smäll och våra glas fylls med bubblig dryck och vi skålar in vår bragd. Glädjen är stor och vi nyper oss i armen. Om några timmar skall vi dessutom nå Galapagos.
Now we only have 0.11° left to the equator. It will be tonight sometime. Then we’ll see what Neptune comes up with. It will be champagne anyway. It feels powerful and surreal that we will be crossing the equator with Vilja. Niklas is on duty and we are woken shortly after midnight. Now it’s getting close….Neptune is already sitting on the aft deck with his trident and is ready to baptize us. At 00:36 on February 11th we cross. On the plotter it says 0.00.000. We are here! Unbelievable! Neptune gets ready and pours a terrible stinking liquid over us as we are baptized. The champagne is opened with a bang and our glasses are filled with bubbly drink and we toast our achievement. The joy is great and we pinch each other’s arms. In a few hours we will also reach the Galapagos.

Framme! Idag ca 08.30 släpper vi ankaret i Academy bay vid ön Santa Cruz i Galapagos. Vilken otrolig känsla! Tänk att vi har seglat ända från Sverige till Galapagos i en liten segelbåt. Det är så att man får nypa sig i armen för att förstå. Det känns heeelt overklig, som i en dröm! Seglingen o motorgången har tagit exakt nio dagar. Nu väntar vi på alla tjänstemän som skall komma ombord och genomsöka båten och kontrollera skrovet. Hoppas verkligen att vi blir godkända.
We are here! Today around 08.30 we drop anchor in Academy bay on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. What an incredible feeling! Imagine that we have sailed all the way from Sweden to the Galapagos in a small sailboat. It’s like you have to pinch yourself in the arm to understand. It feels very surreal, like in a dream! The sailing and motoring took exactly nine days. Now we are waiting for all the officials who will come on board and search the boat and check the hull. Really hope we get approved.

Klockan är 11.00 och en liten båt anländer fullproppad med personer. Nu håller vi tummarna för att allt arbete vi lagt ner godkänns. Ombord kommer nio personer, det är poliser, beväpnade vakter, immigration, health control, agenten, jordbruksmyndigheten mm mm. De ställer en massa frågor och ber om att få titta på en del saker. En man vill se våra grönsaker och frukter och en polis genomsöker båten, troligen för narkotika. Dessutom är det tre personer i en båt som filmar med en gopro-kamera under vattenlinjen. Efter ca 45 minuter är de klara och vi hälsas välkomna. Vi är här nu! Vilken lättnad och vilken glädje! Och så otroligt smidigt det gick!
It is 11:00 a.m. and a small boat arrives packed with people. Now we are keeping our fingers crossed that all the work we put in is approved. Nine people come on board, they are police, armed guards, immigration, health control, the agent, the agricultural authority, etc., etc. They ask a lot of questions and ask to look at some things. A man wants to see our vegetables and fruits and a policeman searches the boat, probably for drugs. In addition, there are three people in a boat filming with a gopro camera below the waterline. After about 45 minutes, they are ready and we are greeted. We are here now! What a relief and what a joy! And how incredibly smooth it went!

I viken ligger flera båtar vi känner. Av totalt ca 12 båtar har vi mött 7 tidigare. Bl a Scout och Porrima är här. Efter lunch ropar vi upp en vattentaxi och åker in till byn. Vi strosar runt och tittar på utbudet. Här är fullt av barer, restauranger och souvenirbutiker. Störst intresse har vi av supermarkets. Utbudet är betydligt större än vi föreställt oss och priserna är lägre än vi befarade. Men fortfarande väldigt dyrt jämfört med Panama och Colombia.
In the bay are several boats we know. Out of a total of about 12 boats, we have met 7 before. Among others, Scout and Porrima are here. After lunch we call a water taxi and go into the village. We stroll around and look at the range. It is full of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. We are most interested in supermarkets. The range is considerably larger than we imagined and the prices are lower than we feared. But still very expensive compared to Panama and Colombia.

Vi sätter oss på en bar och plötsligt dyker Jane o James från Scout upp. Inte långt därefter kommer Peter från Porrima. Det är otroligt att mötas på en så här avlägsen plats. Samtidigt så är vi ju endast ett fåtal båtar som går igenom Panamakanalen o de som går igenom seglar antingen hit till Galapagos eller direkt till Marquesas.
We sit down at a bar and suddenly Jane and James from Scout appear. Not long after, Peter arrives from Porrima. It is incredible to meet in such a remote place. At the same time, we are only a few boats that go through the Panama Canal, and those that go through either sail here to the Galapagos or directly to the Marquesas.

Första utflykten går till Charles Darwin rescue center, en ca 20 minuters promenad bort från hamnen. Med en guide går vi ”Ruta de tortuga” för att se hur de arbetar med uppfödning av Galapagos olika jättesköldpaddor. Alla öar har sin egen art av sköldpaddor så de sorteras och markeras noga så de kommer tillbaka till rätt ö när de placeras tillbaka igen efter 5 år. Då är chansen betydligt större att de överlever. Farorna är många för dessa små liv när de precis kläckts. I det vilda brukar endast 1 av 1000 ungar växa upp till vuxen ålder. Sköldpaddorna, som är världens största nu levande, kan leva till de blir över 200 år gamla och de blir könsmogna vid ca 25 års ålder.
The first excursion goes to the Charles Darwin rescue center, a 20-minute walk away from the port. With a guide we go ”Ruta de tortuga” to see how they work with the breeding of Galapagos giant tortoises. Each island has its own species of turtles so they are carefully sorted and marked so they return to the correct island when they are placed back again after 5 years. Then there is a significantly greater chance that they will survive. The dangers are many for these little lives when they have just hatched. In the wild, only 1 in 1,000 cubs grow to adulthood. The turtles, which are the world’s largest living ones, can live until they are over 200 years old and they become sexually mature at about 25 years of age.

Vi får också se Lonesome Gerorge och höra historian om honom. Han hittades ensam, som sista sköldpadda, på ön Púnta och togs till uppfödningsstället på Santa Cruz. De hoppades kunna reproducera arten sköldpaddor från Púnta med honom. Men tyvärr visade det sig att han var steril. Han dog 105 år gammal och finns nu uppstoppad på centret.
We also get to see Lonesome Gerorge and hear the story about him. He was found alone, as the last turtle, on the island of Púnta and taken to the breeding site on Santa Cruz. They hoped to reproduce the turtle species from Púnta with him. But unfortunately he turned out to be sterile. He died aged 105 and is now buried at the centre.

Ny dag och Jan, Marie och Niklas promenerar till en strand ett par km bort. Det visar sig vara en väldigt lång promenad som resulterar i bl a skoskav. De får i alla fall se rockor på riktigt nära håll som simmar i en vacker formation en meter från strandkanten. Vi möts i stan på eftermiddagen och där visar det sig vara en minikarneval. Vi sitter på första parkett på en bar med goda drinkar och ser på dans och de vackert utsmyckade kvinnorna i karnevalståget. Som alltid är det sprakande färg, glitter och glamour och glädjen lyser hos åskådarna.
New day and Jan, Marie and Niklas walk to a beach a couple of km away. It turns out to be a very long walk that results in, among other things, shoe chafing. In any case, they get to see manta rays up close, swimming in a beautiful formation a meter from the shore. We meet in town in the afternoon and there it turns out to be a mini-carnival. We sit on the first floor of a bar with good drinks and watch dancing and the beautifully decorated women in the carnival procession. As always it is bursting with colour, glitter and glamour and the joy shines in the spectators.

Idag lämnar vi Santa Cruz och tar oss västerut mot den stora ön Isabella. Det är helt vindstilla och vi går för motor. Det tar ca sju timmar och vi ankrar bredvid Porrima som är enda båt här förutom oss. Strax efter kommer agenten tillsammans med en tjänsteman ut till Vilja. När vi seglar mellan öarna här måste vi göra en mini in- och utcheckning. Papper skall fyllas i och vi får en massa frågor. Men inte som när vi ankom till Galapagos.
Today we leave Santa Cruz and head west towards the large island of Isabella. It’s completely windless and we’re motoring. It takes about seven hours and we anchor next to Porrima, which is the only boat here besides us. Soon after, the agent comes out to Vilja together with an official. When we sail between the islands here, we have to do a mini check-in and check-out. Papers must be filled in and we get a lot of questions. But not like when we arrived in the Galapagos.
Denna ö verkar vara jättespännande med flera utflyktsmål. Men imorgon kommer vi ta det lugnt och upptäcka de platser som ligger inom gångavstånd. Vi ser fram emot att se djurlivet här. Det skall finnas sköldpaddor, sjölejon, pingviner och det vi ser mest fram emot – blåfotade Boobies (sulor). En havsfågel med knallblå fötter.
This island seems to be very exciting with several excursion destinations. But tomorrow we will take it easy and discover the places that are within walking distance. We look forward to seeing the wildlife here. There will be turtles, sea lions, penguins and what we are most looking forward to – blue-footed Boobies. A seabird with bright blue feet.
