New adventures awaits

Finally! The day has come! After nearly 11 months in Fiji, we are now on our way to pay our final bill and then head to immigration to check out. It feels really strange—and both sad and exciting. Over the past few days, many staff members have stopped us when they saw us, or dropped by our boat, wanting to chat. They’ve heard that we’ve booked our clearance and are sad that we’re leaving them.

The payment goes smoothly, and we head over to immigration. We have an appointment for 10:00 but are hoping they’ll arrive early so we can get going in good time. But we wait and wait. Finally, just before 11:30, they show up. Everything goes smoothly, and we get our papers and passports stamped. Now we’re heading back to Vilja to cast off.

Jan looking at Vuda marina

But first, there is a beautiful farewell. Staff from all over Vuda Marina gather on the dock, hang a flower garland on the boat, and then sing a beautiful song to tell us they will miss us. They even have a banner reading ”Sota Tale – we will miss you.” The singing is incredibly beautiful, and tears stream down our cheeks. What a fantastic conclusion to nearly a year in Fiji and at Vuda Marina. Then comes a lot of waving and well-wishes as we finally set off just after noon.

Vuda is disappering behind us

Earlier that morning, Jan discovered a problem with the solar panels. They weren’t charging the batteries, and without them, we would struggle to maintain our onboard power supply—or rather, it would be impossible, given the high power draw from the full freezer, two fridges, Starlink, and autopilot. Jan went below deck and began testing circuits and clearing space in a frenzy of activity, yet couldn’t find the fault. It had worked yesterday, but not now. Despair set in. What were we to do? Would we have to turn back after just 30 minutes? I suggested he call Bartek—a very friendly Polish man who is an electrical expert and has helped us a great deal. He answered quickly and walked us slowly and systematically through every possible scenario. After more than an hour, Jan and Bartek—working together—found a switch that had been flipped off: a circuit breaker that had likely tripped sometime during the night. What a relief! Now we could continue. We had about seven hours to reach the northern side of Waya Island—which we planned to pass to the north—and then another three-plus hours to clear the reef that extends far out from the entire western coast of Viti Levu, where we had been staying.

Darkness fell an hour or so ago. We have passed Waya and are heading toward the reef opening, where we will change course from northwest to north-northeast. It is a starry night, and the moon illuminates the black sea, making the waves sparkle—as well as the white foam that appears whenever a wave breaks or swirls around Vilja as she ploughs through the water. One star shines brighter, more clearly, and with a slightly more yellow hue than all the others. It lies directly south of us: Sirius—the Dog Star. A star that has historically served as a vital guiding light for Polynesian navigators.

Jan is resting up here in the cockpit while I keep watch. We are being lulled almost to sleep, yet—having not been out sailing for nearly a year—our bodies, and especially our ears, are on high alert for every sound and nuance. It will likely take a few days before we fully settle back into the rhythm of sailing. Even so, I can feel that my body has already begun to adjust to the movements and the rocking of Vilja after just eight hours.

It’s likely going to get a bit chilly overnight. We’ve already noticed this in the harbor—where the wind is barely blowing—that the temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down, and we’ve been wearing long trousers. Now we’re out at sea and the wind is quite brisk; gusts are finding their way into the cockpit and even under the sprayhood, where we usually sit sheltered from the wind. Right now, however, the wind is hitting us on the beam. Unfortunately, it will be blowing straight at us if we tack to head toward Tuvalu. We’ll likely have to steer a slightly more westerly course to account for the wind. The only problem with that is an east-to-west current that will push us sideways even further west; if that happens, we’ll miss Tuvalu and the small atoll containing the capital, Funafuti. Fortunately, the voyage will take around five days, so we’ll have the chance to compensate later on and steer significantly more toward the east.

I’m sitting here in the dark; it’s almost 1:30 AM. A large tanker is approaching from astern, soon to overtake us while following much the same course. I’m thinking about that terrible accident off Tjörn last summer. That’s why I’m calling Anthas on the VHF. I want to make sure they’ve seen us and find out if we can hold our course. We’re sailing relatively close to the wind, so changing course is difficult for us. Plus, Anthas is the one overtaking. I get a quick reply. They have us in sight and say they intend to pass on our port side, so we can maintain our course. A relief. So now I can sit and watch the lights of the large ship as it’s about to pass us.

On the plotter we can see the tanker, Althea. Now she is more on our port side

The sailing is going smoothly. Right now, we’re on a broad reach, with the wind coming from off the quarter, making between six and seven knots. The sun is shining, and there’s a lovely breeze in the cockpit. We have a fishing line out and are hoping for a bite; I’m absolutely dying to eat fish. We didn’t dare buy fish in Fiji due to the risk of ciguatera, a neurological illness found in reef fish and the predatory fish that feed on them. I’m not quite as worried as Jan, but I haven’t felt like cooking separate meals for us. Now we’re out on the open ocean; we’re mainly hoping for tuna, though a mahi-mahi would be perfect, too. The freezer is packed full of lamb and chicken, so if we do get a bite, it’ll be fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! 😄

It is peaceful sitting out here, moving forward on the wind. There is no engine noise, only the sails fluttering slightly, the sea lapping against Vilja, and the sound of the waves. All around us, there is blue, white, and gray: sky, sea, and clouds.

Sailing north

We wake up to a grey, overcast day. The wind is blowing at around 10–12 m/s, and we are really flying along—often reaching speeds of up to eight knots. The sea is quite rough, with large waves making it difficult to move around inside the boat, yet we feel safe. We still have the wind coming in over the quarter—a broad reach—which is probably my favorite point of sail. If we keep up this pace, we’ll arrive as early as tomorrow afternoon, though the wind is expected to die down further north as we approach Tuvalu. Since we need to enter an atoll, we also need to arrive during daylight hours and, ideally, at slack water, the moment when the tide turns from low to high or high to low and the current is at its weakest. Furthermore, we need good visibility inside the atoll to keep a lookout for ”bommies”, coral heads that rise abruptly from deep water to just below or even above the surface. We do have experience with atolls from our time in the Tuamotus (French Polynesia), where we navigated into quite a few of them.

Jan working up on deck

Lycka!!!

Pure joy! About twenty blunt-nosed whales, likely pilot whales, are playing around Vilja! They’ve been here for a long time now, swimming in front of, behind, and on both sides of us, right next to the boat. It’s the first time we’ve had whales playing around the boat like this. Every encounter with dolphins, and now whales, brings such joy; it seems like they have a blast playing around the boat and showing off for us.

Messenger_creation_7F540455-379B-433B-8DFF-6661E773F582
And they were swimming around us for a long time

A bit of excitement in an otherwise rather quiet life, where time drifts by against a backdrop of empty sea and sky. For the past few hours, we’ve had a Chinese fishing fleet off our starboard side. We can see up to seven boats at a time on the radar, but those are just the ones closest to us; there could easily be twice that many. We know they use incredibly long nets and trawls, so we don’t want to get too close and we certainly don’t want to end up with them on our port side as well. We’ve altered our course about 20 degrees to port to ensure we stay clear. Now that darkness has fallen, we can see navigation lights, or more likely, work lights, on one of them; the others are probably further away or unlit. Most of them are small boats, only about eight meters long and three meters wide, considerably smaller than my Kailani. But one of the boats is significantly larger. That’s likely where all the fish is offloaded before being transported to China or another country with which they have an agreement. There were plenty of Chinese fishing boats in the harbor in Samoa.

Here we see some of the fishingboats

My watch, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM, is a mixed bag. First, the Chinese fishing fleet; then a fierce squall with good wind, speeds reaching up to nine knots, followed by thunderstorms and rain; and finally, just before I’m due to go off watch, the wind dies completely. It was expected, but it makes for an uncomfortable ride. The sea remains rough after all the wind we’ve had, and the boat is rolling heavily from side to side. Moving around inside the cabin is difficult, and pulling down one’s trousers to use the head is nearly impossible. We take down the sails and start the engine; after all, the goal is to arrive on Tuesday morning, and the remaining stretch to Funafuti lies within a belt of calm that looks set to persist for quite some time.

We are in a middle of a squall – easy to see on the radar

Framme i Tuvalu och i Funafuti-atollen. Ca 08.30 idag går vi in genom passet. Ingen ström, inget kokande vatten utan helt lugn o stilla.

We have arrived in Tuvalu and the Funafuti Atoll. We entered through the pass around 8:30 this morning. There was no current and no rough water—everything was completely calm and still. We made our way in and anchored near four other sailboats. We know Screesaver from our time in Fiji, but the others are new to us. We called out several times on the VHF radio without getting a reply. Eventually, they did answer, but there was only static, we couldn’t make out what they were saying. So, we took the dinghy ashore. They knew we were there but wanted to come out to the boat to handle the clearance process. We all headed out to Vilja, filled out some paperwork, and answered a few questions. Now we are officially welcomed into the country with stamped passports, and the Tuvaluan flag is flying. A new country to explore!

Next up is a visit from my old friend Katarina, whom I’ve known since I was young and working at Stena Line. Katarina has visited a few times before, and whenever we meet, it feels as though no time has passed at all, even if it’s been years. We are also situated right out on the edge of the archipelago, enjoying a beautiful sunset and the red granite rocks.

It is also great fun meeting up with fellow sailing friends out in the archipelago and at Källviken Marina. First up is Lars Soold and his crew. As always, it is a delightful time, and we get to enjoy his flute playing. It is not without reason that Lars is known as ”The Fluteman” on Tobago, where he spends a lot of time.

Jan is borrowing a boat from our friend Niklas for a week and is out sailing with his daughter, Petra, and her family. It turns out to be a wonderful week, with stops at both guest marinas and natural anchorages. One stop is at an island in the Vasholmarna archipelago, where I am already moored. It is absolutely delightful, swimming, barbecuing, crab fishing, and playing in the water. Jan’s grandchildren, Esther and Frans, are out on the water with both a dinghy and a SUP board, and the swimming seems endless. Naturally, there is also a crab race when the captured crabs are released back into the water.

One weekend, we meet up with the sailboat Ayla, a family with children with whom we sailed across the Atlantic over three years ago. They have sailed all the way around the world and returned last year. Now the children are back in Swedish school and happy to be home and seeing friends. We have a wonderful evening, talking a lot about amazing places around the globe.

I haven’t just been out on the boat; I’ve been doing quite a bit of work, too. At my old job, Ingsered. It’s really fun to come back, meet new and old colleagues, and work again. I’ve always really enjoyed it there, and this summer is no exception.

The main reason we are back in Sweden this summer is that Tobias and Sandra are getting married. They are traveling from Eskilstuna to Onsala a couple of weeks beforehand to make wedding preparations. During that time, they’ll come visit me, and we’ll take the boat out and spend a day and a night at Usholmen. We get lucky with the weather and enjoy being together, climbing the rocks, sunbathing, barbecuing, and watching the sunset. The next day, I drive them into Grundsund so they can head back to Onsala and continue with the wedding preparations.

My beloved Tobias and

There is a lot to do in the days leading up to the wedding. The venue needs to be decorated and set up, tables laid, cakes baked and beautifully finished, canapés prepared for the ”Bride’s Toast,” the seating plan finalized, and so on. Sandra’s mother, Carina, and her partner, Lasse, have been working hard on preparations for quite some time, and now they are in the home stretch. Friends of Tobias and Sandra are also pitching in to help. By the morning of Saturday, August 15th, everything is ready.

When everything is ready and there are just a couple of hours left until the ceremony, we head to our Airbnb in Partille to get dressed up, a long gown and a dark blue suit. I searched high and low for a lovely dress and am really happy with it now. Jan has rented a smart dark blue suit, so now we’re all set for the wedding.

And so, we are gathered in Haga Church as the bells ring out. Tobias stands there, nervous and tense, waiting for his bride. The doors open, and first come five of Tobias’s young cousins, all dressed up. Then Carina escorts her daughter, Sandra, forward. She looks incredibly beautiful, and her dress is like a dream. Sandra is handed over to Tobias, and the wedding ceremony begins. It is a truly beautiful ceremony, led by a minister who connects with everyone present. Tobias and Sandra exchange vows and rings. As they turn around, now newlyweds, they look absolutely radiant and happy. It is wonderful! They walk down the aisle, skipping the final few steps. Family and friends file out, and then the happy couple emerges onto the church steps amidst cheers! They share a kiss, and the cheering grows even louder. Now, a wonderful celebration awaits!

Sharing the weddingcace

The evening is a huge success, with delicious food, laughter, games, a great atmosphere, and wonderful conversations around the dinner table. I am a bit nervous, though. I’m about to give a speech, the first of my life. I’ve been polishing it endlessly and am happy with it now. I know the opening by heart, but I know my nerves will make me forget it. I’ve been given a time slot and am scheduled to speak after Carina, the bride’s mother. The starter has been eaten, and Carina clinks her glass. She delivers a lovely, emotional speech. Now it’s almost my turn. I sit watching the clock, and then the moment arrives. I clink my glass and stand up. I glance at my notes a bit, but I look even more at Tobias and Sandra. And it goes well! I feel pleased afterwards and get big, warm hugs from Tobias and Sandra. Now I can enjoy the rest of the evening. And I do. The whole family is gathered, and I meet several of Tobias’s childhood friends. I cut in during the bridal waltz, as is customary, and take over dancing with Tobias. I also dance with my brother, Leif, and with Tobias’s best man, Dennis. My, how time flies! Suddenly it’s 2:00 AM, and the party is coming to an end. Tired and content, we take a taxi back to the room we rented and fall asleep quickly.

The days have flown by, turning into weeks and months. Now it is time to haul Kailani out of the water, empty her, cover her up, and prepare her for long-term storage ashore. The sails are taken down, the mast is unstepped, and we get to stay on board while she is on land for a few nights as we finish up the final tasks.

Now covered and ready yo be left

It’s Friday, and there are only two days left until we fly back to Vilja in Fiji via Singapore. We’ve been invited to a crayfish party at the home of Petra and her family. Jan’s son Victor and his partner Linda are there too. The table is beautifully set with crayfish, shrimp, and Västerbotten cheese pie. And it is absolutely delicious! Seafood is arguably the best thing there is, and we are thoroughly enjoying it. The grandchildren, Esther and Frans, give it a try and find it a bit exciting, though they prefer eating hamburgers. The evening flies by, and we drive up to Kailani in Källviken for one last night on board before we empty out the last of our things tomorrow, lock up, and drive the car to Niklas’s place. He is very kind and is letting us keep it parked there until we return to Sweden.

Short and unplanned stop in Fiji

We thought they would lift us straight away. That’s what it sounded like in the email conversation. But we won’t be lifted until Monday. Maybe just as well because our spare part is stuck in customs at the airport. It should have arrived yesterday but we haven’t seen smoke from it yet. Today we have a laundry day. Three large machines with laundry, mainly towels, bed linen, pillows and rags. It doesn’t really get clean when we hand wash in cold water, which we usually do.

Här, dessutom i varmt vatten. Vilken lyx!

Marinas are expensive and far from the turquoise water and beautiful beaches that we love. But a luxury is being able to shower properly. Here, in hot water too. I can’t remember how many months ago we took such a lovely shower. Being able to stand under warm, running water and have time to soap yourself and wash your hair without having to think about every single drop of water that comes out of the shower. Just enjoy and feel really clean. What a luxury!

A shower like this is heaven!

If we get a rental car, we will explore Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, during the weekend. If it doesn’t rain heavily as the forecast says. Unfortunately, we won’t have time to get out to all the fantastic islands here. Many people spend year after year in Fiji because the islands are so beautiful, the diversity is so great and it’s a little cheaper than the rest of the South Pacific. We would have loved to do it, but our time out on a long voyage is limited. Children and grandchildren back home are tempting and we have a long way home. We have only come halfway around the world yet and the next half is longer than this half. With several oceans to cross. If everything goes as planned.

Under nästan slavlika förhållanden.

Time for a road trip on the island, Viti Levu, in Fiji. We are located in a marina on the SW side called Vuda marina. This is where we were so incredibly welcomed a few days ago with song and dance. Now we want to go out and see part of the island. There is left-hand traffic in Fiji, which is not so strange with their close cooperation with New Zealand and Australia. Also, over a third of the island is inhabited by descendants of the Indians who were imported as labor on the sugar cane plantations around the turn of the century 1800-1900. Under almost slave-like conditions. The biggest mistake you make when you are not used to left-hand traffic is turning on the windshield wipers instead of turn signals and roundabouts are difficult. It is easy to forget to look to the right. We both helped each other, Jan behind the wheel and me who reminds you to keep to the left and look to the right. That’s when I have to shout ”watch out” a few times.

Vårt första stopp blir vid Garden of the Sleeping giants.

Our first stop will be at the Garden of the Sleeping Giants. A botanical garden with countless orchids and a path through the jungle. It is incredibly beautiful with the diversity of flowers even though it doesn’t seem to be the right season for many of them. It is purple, yellow, pink, orange, lime, white, cream etc. With incredible patterns and formations. The walk is enjoyable, cool under the shade and absolutely worth the visit.

And so is this

After this wonderful park we drive on to Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple. As we wrote, a significant part of the population in Fiji originates from India. They have retained much of their culture, including clothing, food, language and religion. There are therefore many temples to visit. We choose one of the largest and most colorful Hindu temples in the entire Pacific. The gods Shiva and Parvati are worshipped here. There is a dress code to be allowed to enter, so I cover my shoulders and knees and Jan borrows a sarong to tie around her. We also have to take off our shoes and go barefoot. It is very beautiful and colorful. Several beautiful ceiling paintings, pillars in countless colors and statues of different gods adorn the temple. We are not allowed to take photos inside the temple, but we are welcome to take photos outside. In small rooms there are holy men who welcome offerings and bless worshipers with incense and a dot on the forehead. Everything feels genuine, beautiful and peaceful.

The journey takes us further along the Swedish coast. We don’t really have a big goal, but we see on a map that there are large sand dunes in one place. It is Fiji’s first national park, so we read on. What we don’t think about is that it is blazing sun, scorching hot and not a cloud as far as the eye can see. We start the walk but quickly realize that it will not be possible to walk far in the burning hot sand in just sandals. And with our heads under the scorching sun. We come to a viewpoint where we see a bit of the sand dunes and decide to stop there and turn back. Instead we go to a large and air-conditioned grocery store 😆. A bit of contrast. We had planned to do some provisioning when we still have a car to drive the things back to the boat.

After that stop, I would like to go to a traditional village about 100 kilometers away. It is already after lunch, but if the road is good, it should be fine. For about 30 kilometers we drive on a paved, albeit slightly curvy, road inland, far from the coastal road. But suddenly the asphalt runs out and we drive on a bumpy gravel road. Unfortunately, we have to reduce our speed to about 20 km/h. We soon realize that we will not make it. We are not only going TO the village, but we are also going back. So, sadly, there will be no visit there. Instead, we go to another grocery store to stock up on more provisions. First, they took a lot of our food when we checked in, and secondly, there are not many grocery stores in the countries we will be spending the next six months in. I also appreciate being able to buy food with an Indian flavor.

A lot of dirty water in the river

It’s Monday and we’re woken up early in the morning. We were supposed to be lifted at lunch but they’re already here just after 7am. We put on a dress and two minutes later we’re both ready. Vilja has to back into a machine that lifts us and we’re hoisted up. Shortly afterwards the mechanic arrives who will replace our ”cutlass bearing” that sits on the propeller shaft. The reason we’re stuck in Fiji. The days on land are flowing, the hull is being cleaned again, even though it looks very nice. It’s only been a month since we were on land and did a great job then (read Jan). It’s incredibly hot on land and the energy is running out. The air is completely still and there are also plenty of flies and mosquitoes. The best place, in my opinion, is inside the boat in front of a fan.

We also have another problem we need to address. Our freezer is not working very well. Another mechanic has picked it up but is unable to repair it. The part that is broken cannot be found in all of Fiji. This is a big problem. Without a freezer, I don’t want to be responsible for the food. It would have to be lentil and bean-based food all the time except for some canned tuna and noodles. A one-sided diet I don’t want to live with. After all, this is our home and it is often difficult to stock up on fresh food and vegetables. The freezer helps us have fish, chicken, sausages, meat, shrimp, etc. etc. Indispensable in my opinion. We are trying to convert one of our two small fridges into a freezer but can’t get the temperature down. I start desperately writing to companies in New Zealand that sell freezers. I get answers and they can certainly help us but it will take weeks. Finally, we get an answer from the mechanic who tried to repair our freezer that there is probably one here in Fiji. We are eagerly waiting for it now. First it will have to be transported here for about eight hours from the capital. So now we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will work as it should when it arrives here this afternoon.

Our plan was to stay here for about three days in total. Now we are on the tenth day. The money is flying away and so are the days. We already had a tough route with about 5000 nm, (almost 9500 km, so 9500 miles, imagine from Gothenburg to Tanzania approximately), and four countries in six months. Now we will have to choose one country to make it to Irian Jaya in Indonesia by mid-May next year. Tobias, my son, is getting married so I have to go home and we have to find a place to leave the boat. There is no one between here and Sorong in Indonesia. Everything in between is a big ocean and small atolls.

Jippie!

Going to the big food courts here is a pleasure! There is a lot of exciting stuff and the prices are significantly lower than the rest of the Pacific. The range of Indian goods is huge and exciting. Spices in abundance, different kinds of bread, roti flour, stir-fries etc. etc. We end up buying about 1/3 of what is on the list but end up bringing a lot of unplanned stuff with us instead. As usual, we will be developing our cooking with new inventions. Our new freezer has also arrived. Not as robust as the previous one and it doesn’t freeze at the top, but we can fill it with meat, shrimp and fish! Yay!

Finally it’s time to check out and sail on towards Tuvalu. We’ve done a lot of things – more than planned and now we’re waiting for about six – seven days out at sea. There will probably be some engine running, because the winds should be light. Really looking forward to atolls, turquoise water and beautiful beaches now!

Start sailing north

Today we leave Tonga. And not only Tonga but our wonderful friends Kelly and Dan on Magic and Birgitta and Lasse on Aura. It is with tears in our eyes that we, almost simultaneously, leave the last anchorage on Tonga. We sail north and they sail south. I really hope we see each other again. We will follow each other on social media but it will never be the same. Last night we all gathered at Vilja for one last sundowner together. There were many hugs.

We are sailing at a good speed now. Light wind at about 9 m/s and over seven knots on average. We don’t want to sail too fast because then we will arrive at Wallis in the middle of the night. This tiny country with barely 12,000 inhabitants, about the same size as Åre municipality. It will be exciting to get there and to experience such a desolate place. The first day out here at sea can be a bit rough and the last day there is a risk of thunderstorms. We will, in the future, sail in areas with unstable winds that both change strength and direction and a greater risk of thunderstorms and many squalls.

It’s soporific to be on board Vilja, rolling in the waves. It’s almost midnight and it’s been a long time since darkness enveloped us. I’m on watch and have two hours left. I’ve just finished an audiobook and started a new one. My thoughts are spinning and it’s starting to dawn on me that we’re completely alone out here in this part of the Pacific. A dizzying feeling. For the next six months or so, we’ll be sailing where hardly any other sailors are. And the sea is big. Very big.

Colours just before dark

Men liten smolk i bägaren. Öde atoller i fjärran o knappt besökta länder.

Just over a day on the road now. We are looking forward to Wallis which is supposed to be ”a hidden gem”. But a small smol in the cup. The shaft to the propeller is loose and Jan is worried. Do we have to change our plans? Where can we lift the boat? How many hours can we run with the engine? Should we have stopped in Tonga and had it fixed? Many questions and we are looking at alternatives. Maybe back to Tonga? Maybe to Fiji? Or more or less a long-distance sail to Lombok in Indonesia? None of that appeals and all the alternatives mean that we miss all the places I dream of. Deserted atolls in the distance and barely visited countries.

The sun is getting down

On the last night we slow down to get in the morning and not in total darkness. Long before we arrive we can see that the sky is lit up by all the lights on the small island. We make it through the pass and then motor to the first anchorage – in front of the container port. We are the only sailboat here. Wonderful and strange feeling! It is Saturday morning and we don’t know if we can check in during the weekend. And if we can’t, do we have to stay in the boat for two days? We launch the dinghy and make our way to the shore and the customs office, which has an office here. It looks closed but inside a room there is a man. Jan knocks on the door and he opens it. It is a security guard who barely speaks English. This is French territory and since tourism barely exists, few people speak English. The guard calls the police and an hour later they come and we fill out two papers. Then it’s done. Fastest and easiest check-in in years. We are in ”France” so our passports are not stamped and we have unlimited time here. We ask if there is a lot of tourism on the island and they proudly answer ”Last month there were 5 boats here”

Putting up the Wallis and Futuna-flag

We walk to a supermarket while we wait for the police. It’s expensive here. Very expensive. A head of cauliflower 90 kronor, 1 liter of cream 125 kronor, a small camembert 70 kronor, a small bag of chips 85 kronor etc. etc. We can’t understand how they manage on their relatively low salaries.

Wallis and Futuna consist of 3 islands. About 8000 people live on Wallis, about the same as Mellered. About 4000 people live on Futuna, which is a full day’s sailing south, and only 1 person lives on the last island, Alofi. There are lots of attractions here and the diving is supposed to be nice with untouched coral. However, there are no buses or rental cars, so it is difficult to get around. The cargo ship comes twice a month with supplies. In the capital, Mata Utu, there are two grocery stores, a hardware store and a few clothing stores. It is very empty everywhere, no traffic and no people on the streets.

When we are done with the check-in we make our way to our anchorage. The plan is to visit at least three. This one is by two small islands a little way from Mata Utu but still possible to take the dinghy in. Since it is the weekend there are a few boats there with locals who want to enjoy swimming and water games. We take the dinghy in and enjoy life and look at the children playing on land and in the water. They seem quite shy because they do not make contact with us and do not really dare to look us in the eye.

Our plan is to move to the next anchorage, which should have fantastic snorkeling on Monday afternoon. Monday comes and the rain pours down, at the same time it blows a lot with white foam on relatively high waves. It is therefore impossible to move us. Unfortunately the rain and wind persist for several days so the stay on Wallis will not be quite as we had imagined.

We also talk about what to do with the repair of the boat. When we left Tonga we thought we could lift Vilja in Sorong in Indonesia but on the way we got the news that it wouldn’t work. Vilja is too heavy and deep. That changes the conditions a lot because in that case it’s about 7000nm before we can lift off at Lombok. And we don’t plan to get there for another 1.5 years. We think about the alternatives and decide that the best thing is to sail south again, to Fiji. Viktor, Jan’s son, has ordered the spare part and is mailing it there, we talk to the marina and a mechanic.

So we leave Wallis without really having seen anything. Unfortunately. But the cyclone season has started and Fiji is in the risk zone. That’s why we want to hurry there, get Vilja repaired and then sail north again. It’s cyclone-free there.

The sailing down will take about four days, then it’s six-seven days north to Tuvalu, which is our next destination. So this whole extra trip will take two to three weeks. Our insurance does not apply from today, November 1, to named cyclones. We really hope that there won’t be one like the one in Jamaica in the near future.

Det är en ganska behaglig segling. Lite rulligt, framförallt första dygnet, men 15-20 knops vind i snitt.

It’s a pretty pleasant sail. A little rough, especially the first day, but 15-20 knots of wind on average. Only a few squalls at night and no thunderstorms directly above us. It’s almost a full moon so the nights are lit up by the sea and the sky that sparkles in silver and crystal. The days flow by and we read, enjoy and relax. A couple of times a day we turn on the Starlink and get the opportunity to get weather forecasts, read emails and have some contact with the outside world.

”Sailboat dead ahead of us. Fiji Navalship intend to board you!”Ett skepp från kustbevakningen ropar upp oss på vhf.

”Sailboat dead ahead of us. Fiji Navalship intend to board you!” A ship from the coast guard calls us on VHF. They don’t call our name and we can’t see any boat either with the naked eye or on the plotter. First. We answer anyway and at the same time see a ship towering diagonally ahead. We quickly lower the sails, start the engine and lie still. Shortly afterwards, a larger rubber dinghy with six people on board comes towards us. Three of whom come aboard. The other three circle around us in the dinghy as if to make sure we don’t run away or become aggressive. They tell us that they’ve seen us for a while and that they’re going to do a routine check. A lot of drugs have been smuggled from Central and South America via the Pacific nations on sailboats to Australia and New Zealand so we understand why. A man goes down into the boat and checks various cupboards, drawers and nooks, one sits and chats with us and one stands guard in the stern. We know that we have nothing illegal with us and feel quite relaxed. After about half an hour the man down in the boat is ready, they shake our hands and thank us for letting them come aboard and for our cooperation. Then we continue towards the marina.

What a welcome to Vuda Marine in Fiji! 10 people standing and singing and playing music for probably 15 minutes! Feeling so grateful and blessed. Never experienced anything like it. Wish we had more time here in Fiji but we just want to repair and then sail north again. If it goes in three days we are happy. But…we certainly wish we had more time, at least two months to explore this amazing and beautiful country. With incredible people.

Then comes the bureaucracy…first about 15 pages of paper to fill out. Then a review of all the food we have on board. In all the cupboards. And the woman who is with me is not merciful. We have provisions to sail to Tuvalu and have the freezer full of meat and fish. And the fridge full of dairy products. We also have vegetables in abundance. Especially onions and garlic. Usually have a lot of it. The woman who is with me takes everything…absolutely all meat. Even canned meat. She speaks with real disgust about pork like bacon and salami. Which poisons Fiji, according to her. Food worth probably 2000 kronor, and which we will not be able to get here, just disappears and is thrown away. Also all the vegetables. Luckily, we get to keep all the dairy anyway. I empty one cupboard after another in her sight and she chooses what we get to keep. Some lockers are sealed and we are allowed to keep them but not open them while we are here in Fiji, but most of it is taken away, confiscated. We can keep the alcohol but most of it will be sealed. Oh, that’s no big problem. We won’t be here long and we can do without alcohol. Now the rain is pouring down. A little bit of the feeling we have after having so much food confiscated. Feels really sad. But it is what it is and we have to respect each country’s rules.

The first evening we go to the restaurant at the marina. It is so wonderful to have the food served and to sit at a table and eat instead of having the plate in your lap and trying to eat while the boat rolls and tilts. Now we hope that everything will go smoothly, that the repairs go well and that we can hopefully sail on again in three days.

More of Tonga

The day after our dance, Små Grodorna, we move to a new anchorage. Lisa’s bay. A really beautiful anchorage. Well protected and plenty of space. It will be very windy in the coming days so we want to lie safe without worrying about dragging.

Tongan feast!

Tongan feast! Something most sailors want to experience. We are a large group of sailors from six boats who sign up. First there is a dinghy trip to the beach and then a walk to the nearest village where we are picked up by car. There are already more participants at the restaurant and three men are sitting playing and singing Tongan traditional music. After a while the fantastic food is served, laid out on a long table. It is roast pork, chicken, squid, fish and various salads, noodles and rice. Everything tastes incredibly good and there is plenty of food so we are really full. It is nice to, for once, come to a set table. After the meal there is the kava ceremony. ‘Kava is a traditional Tongan drink that is a deeply rooted part of the culture. It is used in everything from royal ceremonies and weddings to social gatherings and religious rites. The drink, which is made from the roots of a plant in the pepper family (Piper methysticum), has calming effects and symbolizes important Tongan virtues such as respect and community.’ Text taken from Google. It doesn’t taste much, perhaps a bit of forest and we might sense a slightly numb feeling on the tongue and lips. After the kava there is a dance show. We are spoiled by what we have seen in Samoa so this show may not leave such a deep impression. But it still sets the mood for the evening and is beautiful to watch. When it is all over we are satisfied with a very successful and pleasant evening. Now it is time for us to walk almost 1 km in pitch black darkness to our dinghies.

Even a cinnamon bun on cinnamon bun day aboard the Swedish boat Bengt. It is a calm and protected bay so we don’t notice that it is quite windy outside.

Idag hissas Jan upp i masten.

Sunday and we want to go to church. We have heard that there is an incredible amount of singing and music and we want to experience that. We stay here in Lisa’s Bay and get to take the dinghy to a beach and then walk a quarter of an hour to the nearest village. Once we arrive at the church, there are about 20 minutes left so we wait outside. Finely dressed people of all ages flock to the church. Surprisingly many small children. The girls are wearing princess dresses and the boys traditional ”skirts” and a kind of woven rugs on top. The adults are just as finely dressed. The men all have jackets and ties and the traditional skirt with a kind of apron in a material that looks like a braided basket. The women have dresses and on top they have various pieces of jewelry around their waists and skirts made of the same basket-like material as the men’s aprons. Many people come up to greet us and ask if we should join the service. Even the priest comes up and shakes our hands. The priest is dressed in bright blue with a tie with a cross on it. We see inside the church that all those who are active in the service are wearing the same bright blue color. And what a wonderful service! A choir sings countless songs and music flows out through the speakers. The children run around between the rows of chairs but are mostly calm and not loud in their play. They are used to being in church every week. In front of us sits a little boy with a lot of running in his legs. He is restless and very curious about us. Jan gets big looks all the time and what at first is a little worried fascination turns into smiles.

We have heard a lot about these bulls and quickly turn around and go back again. Lulu, Angelina and Scout leave for further sailing while Magic and I go back into the village of Neifa. We are both going up on the hard to make sure the boats are nice underneath. Aura is already there being taken cared of.

It’s a lovely walk

Sedan trycks hon uppåt lite i taget.

Being hauled out here is sometimes something completely different from how it is done in Sweden. Here it is the same kind of maneuver as it was in Vista Mar in Panama. We, who are quite deep-sea, have to come up when there is extra high tide. A cart is driven under the boat and two men dive down and take care of the lines and other things that make the boat a guest of the cart. Then she is pushed up a little at a time. From below. When she is completely up on the cart, the tractor can drive her up, on the cart, onto land. Once up there it will be a day of intensive work. First high-pressure washing and then all the penetrations are cleaned of barnacles, the propeller is polished to a shiny shine, the anode is replaced and our anti-fouling paint, coppercoat, is activated by sanding it. A day later we are back in.

The last few days here in Tonga we spend a lot of time with Kelly and Dan at Magic. We go out to a restaurant one evening and eat fantastic food and play some billiards and darts. We also visit the floating bar a couple of times. In addition to that, we will be carrying a lot of provisions and we will buy soap bubbles, balloons, crayons, writing pads and other small things to give to children on remote atolls in the countries ahead of us.

Jan is doing some job in a narrow space

One day we also do a whale safari. The large Humpback whales come to Tonga to rest and give birth for a few months each year. It is Tonga’s largest tourism industry and people from all over the world come here to swim with whales. Everything is done in a controlled manner with a maximum of four people in the water at the same time and the boat that transports them stays a bit away. The whales also seem curious about us humans. We do this trip at the end of the season so many whales have already swam on. The wind is 11-12 m/s and the conditions for swimming/snorkeling are tough. First we follow, from a distance, a lone calf but the guide notices that it will not work. It moves all the time and then it does not work. Then we find a mother whale with a calf. Often, when the whales are here in Tonga, they dive far down into the sea and rest and then come up to get air. It is on those occasions that the opportunity to swim with them is available. The mother with calf also swims all the time and we follow them from a distance. But sometimes they appear right next to us. You see the spray followed by the back and finally the tail fin that disappears into the sea. Suddenly the mother and the baby start jumping out of the water. As if they want to give us a show. Sometimes they are quite close to us but usually a couple of hundred meters away. It is a fantastic experience that we could hardly have dreamed of. The show lasts for over an hour and it feels magical to experience it. Unfortunately, we will not be swimming with the whales but we are still very happy with the experience we have had.

Today is Sunday again and we go to church once again. This time to the big church in the main town here on Vava’u. Birgitta, Kelly and Dan also come along. Tonga stops on Sundays, no one works and most of the very religious population, dress in the finest they have and then decorate their clothes by putting on a traditional ta’ovala. A kind of woven rug that they drape around the waist. This time too the church is almost full and children of all ages participate. The roof is almost lifted by all the singing and music. It is a wonderful event and we feel that we are going to experience part of their rich culture.

Now we are lying at a buoy waiting to check out. It will probably be this afternoon and tomorrow we plan to sail north towards the country of Wallis and Futuna. A small country consisting of three islands with a total of about 12,000 inhabitants. Now we will say goodbye to all our wonderful friends. It is and feels hard. We have become very close to each other. This is the hardest part of sailing. All the goodbyes. Luckily, we have fantastic experiences ahead of us.

Samoa – in our hearts

Samoa, a country we have come to love. From the very beginning. The people here have hearts of gold and are so accommodating, humble, friendly and smiling.

Finally reaching Samoa

Check-in goes well. First, biosecurity comes for a short stop. They welcome us to Samoa and are happy that we have a Samoan flag to hoist as a guest flag on the mast. Then we get to pick up representatives from customs, immigration and port office with our dinghy. The atmosphere is good on board with lots of laughter as we fill in all the forms and stamp them with our Vilja stamp. They love stamps here and make sure that all the papers are stamped. They are offered homemade cakes and Coca Cola, which they appreciate. Since we do not have Samoa as a country of call, we have to write a letter and explain why we are here. We describe the storm to the south and the damage we suffered on the boat during the storm we encountered. Of course, that paper is also stamped. So now we just have to wait to be called on the VHF to see if we are allowed to stay or not. A few hours later, the statement comes and we are now officially welcome and can go to immigration and collect our passports. Aura, who arrived at the same time as us, accompanies us on the short taxi ride away.

Now all three of us are back together again, but Aura is leaving tomorrow and Magic on Sunday, so we book a table at the Paddle restaurant tonight.

To see more of Samoa we rent a car today. Magic would have been there but was prevented. We drive east along the coast on the north side of the island. In all the villages we pass it feels like they are competing to have the most amazing garden. There are plants with flowers and colorful leaves everywhere. Incredibly beautiful. The traffic is calm and even though we drive on the left side of the road it feels good. We arrive at Piula cave pool on the north side of the island of Upolu. It is a beautiful freshwater pool with a cave and crystal clear water. We then drive over land with hills, greenery and mountains to the south side of Samoa. On the way we stop at a beautiful waterfall that we reach via a short walk. Once on the south side we find a fantastically beautiful beach with a restaurant and resort. Here we decide to take a break and have lunch. We feel that this is a place we could easily stay for a few days and ”just be”. The food is good and the view is striking.

Why not take a kayak on the sea

With our stomachs full and rested, we drive on and come to one of the highlights, Tu Soa Ocean Trench which means ”big swimming hole”. It is a hole in the ground that 30 meters down contains a pool of crystal clear salt water. You go down there on a steep long ladder. It is slippery and a little scary but very worth the trouble and we take a dip in the water.

The hours go by quickly when we are on an excursion. After the ”swimming hole” we drive to a botanical garden but realize that it is already too late in the afternoon so they have closed. So we just drive on back towards the capital Apia where Vilja is anchored. We fill up the car on the way back before we leave it. Here in Samoa, it is mostly cash only, both in most grocery stores and even at the gas station.

The bell rings early in the morning. Very early. It’s pitch black outside and we get dressed and take the dinghy to the dock. The reason is that it’s Sunday and the locals gather at the local fish market. It opens as early as 4am but we get there around 6am. It’s bustling with people and there’s plenty of fish to buy. And it’s so incredibly colorful! Parrotfish, groupers, surgeonfish, unicornfish. Everything is there and they shine in red, blue, green and yellow. Tuna of all sizes and crabs and lobsters. Basically only your imagination can stop you from finding what you can buy.

Once back at Vilja we are tired and satisfied. Our plan for the day continues. As I said, it is Sunday and Samoa is a religious country. So we decide to go to church in the large, beautiful Catholic church. I dress in a light, summery long dress and Jan borrows a sarong from me to cover my legs. Most men here in Samoa wear either a skirt or a sarong. Representatives of the church think it is so funny that we want to join and that Jan has dressed properly, so they take a picture of us before we go in and sit down. The church is large and bright. In the middle of the church room there is a fantastically beautiful round glass decoration on the ceiling. In one corner sits a choir. The music and singing dominate the service and it is very atmospheric and beautiful. In addition to the priest, there are several others who participate up at the altar, both young and a little older. The service is in English so we can follow what is said. Just like in the church in Sweden, it varies whether we stand up or sit down. Towards the end of the service, the priest gathers all the children in the church around him and blesses them by sprinkling water on them. At the very end there is communion. Before everyone gets up and we leave together with the other churchgoers.

Tuesday and we are going to a dance show. Dance is a big part of everyday life and culture here in Samoa, just like the rest of the South Pacific. Today is an evening with a show called Siva afi. A buffet of local food is served on plates made of palm leaves and then there will be a dance show. It is a fantastic show. The women are so beautiful in their yellow clothes and their dance expresses the feminine and graceful. Fingers and hand movements are an important part of the dance. The men’s dance is more about showing masculinity, power and strength. Despite such different performances, they dance to the same music. After the dance comes the fire show. It originated here in Samoa so it is extra fun to see it. We are very happy when the evening is over and we take a taxi back to the marina and our dinghy.

So…what people live here. They are so incredibly friendly and accommodating. It’s also nice to be understood in English after 2 years in first Spanish-speaking and then French-speaking countries. When we say we come from Sweden, almost everyone can place the country in northern Europe. Impressive3. With my hand on my heart – how many of us Swedes can place Samoa on the world map. Samoa is a bit like Thailand in the 80s. Almost no tourists and everyone is curious about us. Not so many places on earth that we can experience it anymore in the 2020s.

We go to another dance show the next day. This time it is at a hotel and it is called Fiafia show. We believe that this is a pure fire show. But it is not. The buffet here is even better than yesterday and we enjoy it. The dancing is also nice but not as nice as yesterday. I think the environment plays a big part. Today it is, as I said, at a hotel while yesterday it was in front of and on a wall. The audience at both places consists largely of local Samoans and the rest are Samoans who now live or were born in New Zealand and Australia. We are the only Europeans. And many ask us what we are doing here on the other side of the world. And when they hear that we sailed here they are very impressed

The days pass and we enjoy Samoa. We have a lot to repair and Jan is busy sewing. Both the bimini and the sail. The attempts with the sewing machine on the sail are going so-so. The needle breaks countless times so it’s mostly hand sewing. The two slats that have disappeared/broken are also replaced and a plank is bought to launder diesel cans around on deck. We drop off laundry at a laundromat, have a lot of paper copied and print out forms that we will need in the future in the different countries we will visit.

Now the boat Scout has arrived here. We have met on various occasions since last summer in Cartagena. It is so fun to meet different sailing friends from all over the world in different places. The South Pacific is huge yet we manage to meet. It will be an evening at the nearest bar together with 2 other boats that are here in Samoa. As always, just as nice and we sailors here have so much to talk about.

There is a flea market here and we visit it of course. Lunch at a local place and then we walk around among all the beautiful things they sell. Fabrics, woodcarvings, jewelry and much more. We have limited space on the boat but we will each get a gift for Jan’s grandchildren Esther and Frans. We buy something from each country we visit for them. I think it is a way to start teaching them about different countries and cultures around the world.

Sunday again. We loved the fish market last Sunday so getting up at 5am feels totally fine. Just like last Sunday, we get there just as the sun rises and the sky starts to brighten and show its beautiful colors. Here too, there is a variety of fish and shellfish. The colors are indescribable and we enjoy it. We buy tuna fillet for a very low price compared to back home and it brings back memories of all the delicious meals. In Sweden, I buy fresh tuna the few times I really want to celebrate something. It’s insanely expensive and exclusive. Here it probably tastes even better but costs about 1/10 of the price

Now we are starting to plan for continued sailing. The winds are blowing straight south and we will sail south towards Tonga so we have to wait a few days. Thursday looks like a good day. Still big waves so it will be both rolling and bumpy but the wind will hopefully come from the east so we won’t have to cruise.

Before leaving we go to another dance show. The evening is fantastic, again, with good food, nice company and an incredible dance show. Another Swedish boat has appeared. Ohana. There are surprisingly many Swedish boats in this part of the world. Here in Samoa, where there are few sailboats, we have been 4 Swedish boats in 2 weeks

We are now cleared and heading south towards Tonga. We hope for a good sailing without complications.

On open sea towards Samoa

Day four on the way from Maupiha’a towards Western Samoa. We were actually going to sail to Niue but then we would have run into a storm. So we have chosen to sail further north instead. The first two days the wind was bad but since yesterday we have been flying forward in a lovely breeze. We are doing an average of about 6.5 knots but in the surf waves we are up to over 8 knots. The waves are pushing us forward. There are swells from the storm south of us that have started to come here. There is a warning for waves up to 4 meters high but that is not until the weekend. It will take us about 9 days to sail the entire distance until we reach Apia, the capital. Since we said we are going to the country of Niue, it is in our papers so we have sent an email and asked for permission to come to Samoa instead. We are waiting for a response to that.

Magic and Aura are also on their way to Samoa. It’s nice to have more boats. We can see Aura on the plotter while Magic has taken a more southerly route. They will probably arrive first, then we’ll see what happens between us and Aura. Anything can happen during a sail like this. Winds can change, things can break, winds can die down. We can only hope that it will be a reasonably comfortable sail anyway.

Lovely sailing so far

It’s a lovely sailing trip now. Vilja likes it when there’s a bit of speed. She takes on the sea and dances her way through the waves. Life on board is quite pleasant even though it’s a bit of a challenge to cook and go to the toilet. Although we don’t roll that much anyway. It’ll probably get worse in a couple of days when the swells are twice as high and the distance between them is considerably shorter. On the way we’ll cross the date line. Strange feeling, all of a sudden we’re missing a day in our lives.

The afternoon is coming with beautiful colours

Vilket jobbigt nattpass. Vindarna vrider hela tiden.

What a tough night shift. The winds are constantly changing. First from E to SE and then back to E and then immediately turning to NE. Since we actually have the wind straight into the stern but zig-zag our way forward, it becomes very sensitive. Especially since it is rolling and we are turning a lot. Then we get a backlash in the sails and it wears them out. Jan has already had to come up once so we had to gybe because we were sailing more north than west. At that time I thought for a while that we would sail in the right direction. But now I have had to adjust the course so that we are sailing more south instead. This way it will take a long time to arrive. We are hoping for 5 more days but right now I feel very unsure if it will last. And it will get worse.

What a fucking squall. Winds with almost storm force are coming at us quickly. From all directions. 360 degrees around. Our autopilot of course lets go and I yell at Jan who is quickly up. We are busy parrying Vilja and can’t care which way we steer. At times it will be straight east again, from where we came. The most important thing is to try to get the wind in from the right side of how we have furled the sails. Bang, bang the sound is terrible every time the boom flies over in an uncontrolled gybe. It hurts my soul and heart to hear how it bangs and the whole rig shakes. The wind tears at the sails and rig and there is a howl all around us. Our preventers that are supposed to help keep the boom in place are torn apart and the boom moves uncontrollably. Throws itself back and forth. Every time we are afraid that the sail will be torn apart or that the mast will be torn down. We don’t want to have the mast out at sea in stormy winds. We have to be in the middle of the wind because the wind just spins around. It’s uncomfortable and we do everything we can to prevent the mast from breaking or the sails from being torn apart. Jan ran up without a life jacket and sits and steers by hand. I shout starboard and port alternately. All to avoid more gybes. It’s hard to steer the boat by hand in the strong winds and it’s pitch black outside. I run down to get a life jacket and lifeline for Jan. It’s life-threatening to sit there without one. What if he falls in the wild sea in the dark. I wouldn’t have a chance to save him. We let go of the halyard to the mainsail so it falls over the boom and partly onto the deck. The sail area must be minimized and it can be torn apart the way the wind blows. I try to head home but we’re too busy holding on and everything is a mess in the cockpit. The waves are crashing over us so we’re getting soaked. The squall never seems to go away. Will the rig hold? What if the mast falls down. It’s an incredible strain on it. The boom could fold the shrouds on either side as it flies back and forth. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that everything will go well. It’s tough. Really tough. Vilja can handle it but the rig can handle it. Never experienced such strong forces before. We’re busy managing the wind so where we steer doesn’t matter.

The main sail is finally down

Definitivt. Till sist somnar jag, helt utpumpad.

We struggle for about two hours until it finally calms down. Gasp. It was probably the worst thing we’ve ever experienced. Worse than the wave. We’re both completely exhausted and the adrenaline is pumping through our bodies. Now it’s ”only” blowing about 15 m/s – a gale. But it feels so good to have weathered the storm of up to 50 knots – 25 m/s. How am I supposed to fall asleep now? It’s 3:15 a.m. I actually get off my shift at 2:00 a.m. but here we needed to be all men on deck. Definitely. Finally I fall asleep, completely exhausted.

This day has been a day of recovery. We have discovered several damages but have not been able to check the sail yet. It is temporarily lashed around the boom. Since last night we have only had the genoa to sail on because we had to lower the mainsail. That is how we will have it until the wind and waves have died down. One of our solar panels was in the water and was being pulled after us. Jan managed to get it up. The bimini (sunroof) has been torn, our preventers were torn and a rain cover is completely destroyed and we have lost two battens in the mainsail. There will be a closer inspection when we arrive on Samoa in 5-6 days. The sea around us is wild with white foam on every 4-meter wave that attacks us from the stern. And it is lucky that it is from the stern and not from the side or front. But it is terrifying to see the high waves rushing towards us. They give Vilja a push forward and then leave us at the bottom of the wave valley. Vilja sails well and I have thought many times that it would be nice to have a truly seaworthy boat.

It’s hard to see but the waves are 4 meters high

The sea is ruff

But now darkness is coming soon. 11 hours without seeing the sea around. Only hearing the hissing of the big waves and not being able to know which way Vilja will roll. After last night it feels scary. We will both be in the cockpit to be able to act quickly if something happens. It feels safer. But, for the first time, I feel scared. There was no danger tonight even though the thought crossed my mind ”What if we capsize” but I still wasn’t scared in the middle of it.

New night and full moon. Sooo beautiful. The sea is still wild but still a little calmer than the day before yesterday. I’m sitting alone on watch. Jan is only a few meters in so if needed we can quickly become two. The last 24 hours I’ve been tired – extremely tired. I’ve been in bed pretty much all day. I barely sleep at night so my body protests and shakes with fatigue. Six days without almost any sleep is taking its toll. The waves over 4 meters high are also taking their toll. It’s hard to live a reasonably comfortable life when everything around me is rolling. The boat is a total chaos, moving around is like a terrible obstacle course. Cooking is hard, especially having bags full of things that just tip over and move sideways back and forth.

The moon shines round and clear and big. It is a full moon and its light sparkles in the sea like crystals shining on a piece of jewelry. This makes the big waves of the sea not feel as scary, but you can see the beauty of the living deep blue sea. We are approaching Samoa and there are now about 2.5 days left. Instead of zig-zagging our way forward, we can now steer straight towards our destination. The wind has turned slightly and tomorrow it will turn even more towards the NE. It will also subside and the high swells will decrease in height. It is the night shift now and Jan is lying inside sleeping while I watch over Vilja. In a few hours we will change.

Moonshine over the sea

One and a half days left. I’ve just started my night shift after a good dinner. It’s still light. We haven’t changed the clocks since we arrived in the Tuamotus and now we’re considerably further west. I usually sit up in the dark for 7 hours on my shifts – it’s quite nice to have light for the first hour for once 😊. The sea is calmer now and there are only light winds. After a few hours we’ll be motoring. We want to arrive and start check-in before the weekend so that we can leave the boat by Friday at the latest and go ashore and discover the exciting country of Samoa.

Now we have a beautiful sunset

Today is Tuesday and a little over a week since we left Maupiha’a. We are approaching the date line and when I wake up tomorrow it is suddenly Thursday. Just like that. Wednesday disappears. A strange and magical feeling. We set the clocks back one hour during summer and winter time. Now we will set the clocks back 23 hours. 180° straight on the other side of Greenwich time. Imagine that two neighboring countries live in two completely different days on this side of the globe.

Morning and we are off Samoa. We call out on VHF and get permission to enter the harbor. This is a country we look forward to visiting. Not many sailboats come here and we have only heard positive things about Samoa. New adventures await!

Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a – boatwork and tours

Lazy days on Huahine.  At least to start with. When we arrive we look for a free buoy but don’t find one. So we think we can anchor instead. A large area is marked as forbidden to anchor at so we go a little further inland but still far from the coral reefs, which we don’t want to destroy. As soon as we start to take out the anchor to lower it to the bottom we hear whistling and angry shouts. A man on land makes it clear that we are not allowed to anchor. We stop immediately and back away from there. He apparently takes it as if we are backing up the anchor and continues to mark that we are not allowed to anchor. We obviously respect that it is not allowed. We are guests here in their country and both we and our boats must show consideration. That’s what we think wherever we go. So instead we circle around for an hour or so until a buoy seems to become free. Now another boat has come in and is circling around and they are marking that they intend to take the buoy. Even though we were there almost an hour before them. An unwritten rule is that whoever is there first has the right to the spot. So it gets a bit infected. They choose to jump in and dive to see how deep the sandbank is if the boat turns around 180°. They then notice that their boat is too long so their depth rudder will get stuck. So they call us up on the VHF and say we can take the spot. Once there we also measure and it is borderline if we might end up going into the sand with our rudder. But we are so happy to finally get a buoy and take it. For the first time I am the one who steers in and Jan is the one who picks up the buoy eye. Usually I steer when we drop the anchor and take care of lowering the anchor and also raising it again, but Jan usually steers in for the buoy.

Magic and Aura welcome us to Huahine

The water here has an absolutely magical color. It is incredibly turquoise over the large and wide sandbank that goes all the way out to the reef where big waves break. We take the dinghy out there to get closer to the huge waves but there are several boomies (coral rocks) out there so we don’t get as close as we want.

Here on Huahine we take it easy. Not as much fixing as in Tahiti. I listen to a book for several hours a day and enjoy it. Jan fixes a little and goes out snorkeling. It’s nice to take a moment and ”just be”. The anchorage is beautiful, we are protected behind the reef and we take the day as it comes.

Second day here today and we go in with the dinghy together with Kelly and Dan for a walk in the village. Tonight we are going to a restaurant together and Birgitta and Lasse are also going. It will be a very nice evening with good food, sunset and nice company. We wish three boats could sail together for at least a year. But they will go south towards New Zealand and we will go north towards Kiribati.

And a sign to be careful with falling coconuts. If you get one in your head you can die

But, smolk in the cup…we have new problems with the boat, one of which is big. Thought we would avoid more problems. On the smaller side, the opening hatch we have mainly in the spray hood has come loose. And this for the third time now. It is attached to hinges with pop rivets and we do not have pop rivet pliers. Luckily, Aura has one and then the problem is easily solved! The next problem is the stove, which hangs loosely on two small rods in brackets on each side. This is needed because the stove must be able to swing when we tilt or rock so that pots and pans are always horizontal and nothing spills over. The bracket on one side has now broken and there are no spare parts. Jan has drawn how he wants some turned and welded and we hope to get it sorted on the next island. Our newly installed saltwater pump runs hot and doesn’t produce enough water, so we can only use it sparingly. It was the best installation on the boat of all, in my opinion. This is a thing that have ended up further down the to-do list. Unfortunately.

Sun and sky in beautiful combination

So to our new big problem. The entire battery bank of eight batteries has collapsed. They don’t receive enough energy and then the refrigerator, freezer, starlink and everything else that runs on electricity on board stop working. During the day we have managed because our solar panels are constantly replenishing with new power. But at night the alarm sounds when, for example, the freezer shuts down. So for 3-4 nights now we have had to get up every three hours to start the engine. Then one of us sits awake for about an hour with the engine on. At least three times a night we need to do this so that all the food in the freezer and fridge is not ruined. So, the only thing now is to buy a completely new battery bank. Luckily, we are close to the next island that also has a mechanic. We don’t have to go back to Tahiti again. We wanted to see many anchorages on Huahine and snorkel more but decide to go directly to Raiatea. Jan has already got in touch with a man here who will help us with new batteries. We knew about the battery problem since we left Grenada in the fall of 2023 but have been putting it off. The plan now was to replace the battery bank in Indonesia next spring. But, now it has completely collapsed so we have to rethink.

The window that has collapsed

So we are now at the quay again and today all the old batteries have been removed and six new ones installed. To increase our power generation we are purchasing another solar panel and our regulators are being placed in new, more accessible locations and thicker cables are being installed.

Work with the batteries goes on
Messenger_creation_E7855032-F986-4EE9-86F5-946D563A66E9
I took a walk along the pier and a small fishibgboat arrived with this hughe swordfish. I bought 1,5 kilos for around 10 dollars.

Third day of work now. Starting to feel like we’re doing nothing but working on the boat. It’s also getting expensive. The batteries cost about 18,000 kronor and now 3 full days of work on it, also about 18,000 kronor. There are more fun things to spend money on. But we’re already noticing a huge difference with the new batteries. The freezer is colder and the batteries last all night and even when it’s cloudy. Moving our regulators with thicker cables will also give us greater safety and definitely less risk of fire. Apparently the cables have been hot a few times and that’s not good. We’re going out to sea and to countries where few sailboats sail and where spare parts will be basically impossible to find. So we need Vilja to be in good condition.

Many days of hard job and the boat is a mess

French Polynesia is widely known for its incredibly beautiful pearls. Most famous are the colored pearls that are found nowhere else in the world. They are black, green, eggplant, turquoise and blue. The oysters used are ”Black lipped” and they only grow here. There are pearl farms on most islands in the Tuamotus and they are also here on Taha’a. We visit one of the smallest farms in the country but they still produce 20,000 – 30,000 pearls per year. The environment is incredibly beautiful and our guide tells us how the cultivation is done. They carefully open the oyster just a little bit and place a small ball made of seashell with long tools similar to a dentist’s. The oysters are then placed deep in the water where they are allowed to remain for 18 months before the pearl is ready. In 20% of the oysters, beautiful round or teardrop-shaped pearls are formed. These are then categorized into different classes. Even the ”deformed” ones are used for jewelry and they are also beautiful. The jewelry in the shop that belongs to the pearl farm is incredibly beautiful. And expensive. There are jewelry here for several million kronor. Many pieces of jewelry cost several hundred thousand kronor each. The best quality pearls go for 200,000 kronor just for one pearl in a ”basket” of gold. So incredibly beautiful! We are three women on the tour and we are yearning for the jewelry. Kelly at Magic buys a necklace with 3 pearls and I buy one with two pearls. An incredible memory from this beautiful country and our trip. These pearls are considered the most exclusive and beautiful in the world and I am very pleased!

Taha’a is also the island where Tahitian vanilla is primarily grown. 80% of the country’s vanilla comes from here. So today we visit a vanilla farm. We get a description of the vanilla that is grown here. It is said to be extremely concentrated in flavor and is very exclusive. It is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after spices by confectioners and chefs around the world. This exceptional vanilla originally comes from islands in Indonesia, and the production is very exclusive. The vanilla plant is an orchid plant that needs a tree to grow on. Here they grow on fig trees. The flower is yellow-green and takes nine months before it is transformed into a vanilla pod. Each flower must be pollinated manually. We buy both pure real vanilla powder and extract. Which will be fun to try in cooking and baking. Even today I am very satisfied!

It will be a few days of waiting and today we go on a tour with a fantastic guide – Noah from Vanilla travel. We take the dinghy into his childhood home and he tells us about his upbringing and shares all his knowledge about everything that grows in the garden. He tells us how he picked plants and lay on his back and enjoyed eating them, looking up at the sky as a 6-year-old. What a wonderful life! Countless fruits and medicinal plants grow here. While he is telling us, we see that his parents are doing yoga in a Sala (open pavilion) down by the shore.

The journey takes us further around the island and we pass, among other things, a copper production facility where everything is done manually. Copra is the dried white part of a coconut and is one of the world’s most important raw materials for fat production. Coconut fat or coconut oil is obtained from pressed copra, and the press residue is used to make feed cakes, which are an important feed for animals.

We make a stop to eat lovely fresh fruits from the garden. Bananas, papaya, pamplemousse, coconut, guava and starfruit

The last stop is a combined coconut oil production and rum distillery. Here we get a quick overview of how they produce coconut oil and then we see them put the sugar cane in a machine to extract the sweet liquid that turns into ethanol and methanol. This is then separated by heat, among other things, before they produce white and dark rum with different strengths, ages and flavors. We take the opportunity to buy passion fruit rum, which sounds very good.

Tomorrow morning, at 6 am, we plan to sail towards Bora Bora.

Arriving in Tahiti

The anchor is raised and we are prepared to leave Rangiroa. All hatches closed, life jackets on, everything stowed at sea. Now we are excited about how this pass will turn out. Have we calculated correctly on the guestimator with wind and wave factors so that we hit the pass when the water is calmest? We are approaching and it looks fantastically calm. Oh how nice! Yesterday afternoon we sat at the bar at the pass when the current was strongest and then the sea was not at all like now without wildlife.

It’s a fantastically lovely sail. Vilja glides along at about five knots without rolling anything in particular. The day turns into afternoon and then into dusk. The sky delivers a fantastically colourful sight in pink, orange, purple and yellow. It feels good for the night’s session. As usual, I have the first session for seven hours. The wind dies down and turns a bit so I have to adjust the course so that the sails don’t beat so much. We then end up on a collision course with another boat that we will meet in the future. In turns I move back towards the previous course to prevent us from meeting too close. There is a precision between fluttering sails and avoiding a collision. The other boat obviously sees us too but doesn’t seem to change its course at all. We are approaching each other and can now see the lanterns and it will go well. Great.

Today it’s really beautiful

The rest of the night is calm and the only thing that happens is further course changes to avoid the flutter. It is wearing down the sails a lot and we hope they will hold all the way home to Sweden. Even though we are on the other side of the globe now, we have over half the distance left. We are only halfway across the Pacific Ocean and ahead of us we have the Indian Ocean, which will be treacherous, and we will cross the Atlantic Ocean twice more. Both south of the equator and north of it. Before we reach Europe and the Azores. In a few years.

Morning and we are approaching Tahiti. To get into the anchorage we call out on VHF for permission when we are completely outside. It is a very busy port and we are asked to wait until a ferry has left. Once inside we will have to pass through the airspace to the airport’s conveyor belt so we have to ask for permission here too to pass. There are lots of boats here. Several without owners on board and a few days ago, when it was very windy, 4 boats were adrift. At such times everyone helps with their dinghies to stop the drifting boat from colliding with another boat. This time it apparently went well. We find a place to anchor. Since it is crowded and we have to take into account that the boats spin around their anchor, it takes two unsuccessful attempts before we are satisfied with our position in relation to the nearest boats.

After a good night’s sleep, almost 12 hours, we take the thing into an industrial area here in Papeete. We have to hand in our life raft for service and we hope to be able to buy solar panels to increase our electricity production now that the generator, for a couple of months, is broken again. A new snorkel mask for me will also be bought plus some fishing gear. We manage to pick up most of all the things in a relatively short time. There will be a little walking between shops but we just feel good after all the sitting in the boat.

Tahiti is the main island and Papeete the capital of French Polynesia and really the only ”large” city between South America and New Zealand/Australia. Here the feeling of the tropics is not so great but industries, large cargo ships and a big city feel are instead dominant for better or worse. But it is fascinating that there are coral reefs and colorful fish even in the deepest part of the large harbor. We will stay here for a while and fix a lot of things. Partly installing solar panels, rig check, dentist visit, provisioning, engine service, waiting for packages sent from Sweden and making sure that the boat and equipment are in good condition etc. etc. When we leave French Polynesia we will sail to countries off the beaten track and there we cannot expect to get things done. But before that we have more islands in French Polynesia to visit.

Rig check booked, dentist appointment booked and a lot of laundry done. We’re productive and feeling satisfied. We’re planning to stay here for about 2 weeks and the list of ”must-do things” is long.

Saturday and we’re going to a BBQ party. We’re part of a group called Ocean Posse. There are several hundred boats all over the Caribbean and Pacific that are members. One of them is organizing a BBQ party here in a marina. We go there with Dan and Kelly on Magic. Rum punch is laid out, the grill is lit and the atmosphere is high. We meet many people we know from boats we’ve met since we left Panama. There will be several hours of socializing, good food and laughter. There are a couple of real luxury boats on the dock. The owners, probably multi-billionaires, come to the boats between a couple of weeks and a couple of months a year. A large staff works day in and day out to keep the boat shiny and clean. It’s polished, waxed, cleaned and washed so that everything is perfect when the owners come to their boat. Of course it would be fun to experience such luxury for a week, but we prefer to sail as we do.

One more thing to check off our list. Jan has brought in two riggers who will go through everything to do with the mast, boom, shrouds and stays. It is important to make sure there is no wear or other defects. We definitely do not want to have a mast break while sailing. Everything looks good but we are advised to buy some spare parts, which we are doing. At least we have come some way with our todo list and it feels great.

Finally there and probably with a nice view

Fakarava atoll

Wow how rough it is now when we go out through the pass from Tahanea and out into the open sea. We quickly decided to leave today because the time for the tidal currents is better out of Tahanea today and into Fakarava tomorrow. We are five boats leaving at the same time and it is worse than sitting in a dryer in the middle of the pass. There are several meter high ”standing waves” that come from the flow of water that wants to go out colliding with the flow of water that wants to go in and waves due to strong winds that want to go in. Vilja ends up in the middle of these high and unruly waves and the engine has to work hard so that we can move forward. Finally we are out anyway and now a night sail awaits. We hope to arrive already tomorrow morning when there is slack water at the next atoll, Fakarava.

The pass was really tuff out of Tahanea

It is early morning and we have arrived at the next inlet. It is wide and looks very calm from the outside so we decide to go in even though the current is supposed to be at its strongest right now. The forecast for the current is not correct at all because it goes out eastwards and it is also very weak. How nice!

Here we will be staying at a village for the first time in the Tuamotus. We have not been inside a shop or seen even the smallest village since we left Hiva Oa over a month ago. It will be good to get rid of the trash and buy drinks, frozen meat and fresh produce.

New anchorage and of course a ”hoppilandare” ( anchordram)

The village is small and quiet and has several smaller shops. We go in and out and buy extremely expensive food. Probably the most expensive we have ever seen. Probably 4-6 times more expensive than in Sweden depending on what we buy. Vegetables, dairy and meat we get to buy what is available and not what we really want. But we have started to get used to that since we left Panama. The supply boat comes one day a week, on Wednesdays, and then there is a queue to buy, most vegetables run out in a few minutes. Now it is Thursday and we have to make do with the leftovers. But it feels luxurious regardless.

A small cruise ship has also come in here and when they disembark they are welcomed by music and an exhibition of local products to buy. We each take the opportunity to buy something for Jan’s grandchildren and Jan buys me a pearl necklace. A black pearl to hang in a pendant around my neck. The Tuamotus are known for cultivating pearls, especially black ones, and for jewelry made from the mother of pearl of the mother conch. We get a short description of how it is done and find out that the white pearls take 3-6 months while the black ones take 18 months. A great memory to take with us from here.

Vilken mysig dag!

What a lovely day! We take the dinghies to the Havaiki restaurant which is right on the beach. There are also cosy little bungalows to rent here and it looked quite full and all the rooms had diving equipment outside the rooms. The Tuamotus and especially Fakarava are known for their fantastic diving. And the best is in the two inlets to the atoll when the current in the water is strongest. There are lots of corals, colourful fish and above all lots of reef sharks and nurse sharks. Here at the restaurant too there are nurse sharks just a few metres away from us. We sit outside on chairs around a table in thigh-high water and the sharks, which are enormous, swim right by us.

We stayed many hours until we saw bad weather coming

Today is a sadder and rainier day. We are moving south in the lagoon and it is a bit windy so it is cold out in the cockpit. Probably 20 – 25 degrees, in here it is slightly warmer. I feel a bit hungover. A lot of boils have appeared on my legs, probably furuncles, and some of them really hurt. So much so that I have had difficulty sleeping the last 2-4 nights. I was at the local clinic yesterday morning and was given antibiotics, paracetamol and chlorhexidine. Everything was completely free – both the visit and the medicine. Remembering how bad it was for me last time, I want to make sure to start taking antibiotics as soon as possible. I hope these don’t burst. At least now we won’t be out on the open sea for a month and will have access to care and medicine within a day or so at most. Unfortunately I may have to refrain from swimming, at least if they burst.

After a few days in the village we head through the entire atoll to the southeastern anchorage. The atoll is large so the journey takes about seven hours. It starts to rain as we are about to anchor. A squall has come over us and the wind picks up speed while the rain is pouring down. Suddenly, lightning and thunder strike at the same time. Have we been hit by lightning? The wind picks up even more and changes direction. Vilja spins 360 degrees around the anchor several times which, fortunately, has attached itself properly. When the storm starts to move away we start our electrical equipment to see if anything has broken. Luckily, the lightning must have struck just outside because everything works. We also snorkel around the anchor and its chain to make sure we haven’t gotten caught in any boomies (coral) and everything looks good.

Of course there will also be a lot of farewells. And that’s how it is today. Almost all the boats we have been with for the past two weeks will leave and head for Tahiti. We and the boat Woodpecker2 will also leave the anchorage today but we will make our way to a new anchorage at the southern entrance to Fakarava. Here we are out snorkeling in the inlet when the outgoing current turns and comes in again with crystal clear water and a variety of fish species.

On the way to the snorkeling

Diving enthusiasts go to Fakarava all year round because of the species richness, the crystal clear water, the amount of healthy corals and the countless reef sharks. But a ”spawning event” at the full moon in June for one day is completely unique. Then hundreds of thousands of groupers (marbled sea groupers) and other pelagic species, including grey reef sharks, swim to the southern pass of the atoll, where they ”spawn”, mate. Diving then means that you are in the middle of this enormous amount of fish that are so fearless that you can almost touch them. In addition, there is an area called the ”reefshark wall”. The reef sharks in numbers that are up to 2.5 meters long swim around – only cm from those who dive. This is truly a diver’s paradise! Unfortunately, neither I nor Jan dive and right now it feels like we really missed something.

We met friends who had been diving both among the Groupers and the wall of sharks. It had been amazing!

New day and we’re going out and snorkeling again. But first we have to leave the thing at a pier. A local helps us and when we get up on the pier he and his friends offer us a beer. It’s only 10 in the morning but we decide that it’s nicer to sit down and say thank you. We sit there for a while and one beer turned into two. We turn down the third one, however. The others around the table have probably had significantly more beers even before we got there. They also mix the beer with large plastic bottles of rum punch. We guess it’s their day off and they’re celebrating it with a proper drink. The conversation gets a bit so-and-so as they only speak French and we don’t know French at all. One of them gives us a taste of dance from Fatu Hiva where he’s from. We then thank him for us and take a walk before snorkeling. An unexpected day in our wonderful life we live.

It’s getting time for us to leave Fakarava and go to the next atoll. Before that, we want to stock up in the town at the northern entrance again so we make the long journey north into the atoll. This time we take the opportunity to arrive the same day as the supply boat. The queues in the shops are long but the vegetables, apart from onions and potatoes, are conspicuous by their absence. We fill up on some anyway and at the same time take the opportunity to get our one glass bottle filled with butane gas and to fill up the cans we have standing on deck with diesel. Now we are ready for a new atoll, Toau.
