Fixing Kailani back in Sweden

We’re back in Sweden! It’s been a long time. We left in September 2024, flying to Cartagena, Colombia, where Vilja was docked at the time. A lot has happened since then. We sailed the Caribbean side of Panama, transited the Panama Canal, and ventured out onto the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific. It is larger than all the Earth’s landmasses combined. Our friends Marie and Niklas joined us, and we sailed, via the Galápagos Islands, all the way to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. The longest open-ocean stretch took 29 days. I think we saw a total of six boats, almost all from a distance, during that month. We spent about six months in French Polynesia; Marie and Niklas left after sailing with us for nearly three months. We continued sailing west and crossed the International Date Line. Samoa, Tonga, and Wallis & Futuna were the next places we visited. From there, the plan was to sail north and then continue west toward Indonesia during the hurricane season. But… that’s not how things turned out. Boat trouble forced us to sail south instead, to Fiji, where we hoped to resolve the issues within a week. That didn’t happen either. Sure, we sailed to Fiji, but we encountered far more problems than we had hoped for. And time was running out to leave Fiji safely; hurricane season is nothing to mess with. Consequently, we had to postpone the rest of our journey by a full year and stay in Fiji for the entire hurricane season. Jan has really enjoyed it, whereas I haven’t. The people are absolutely wonderful, and the country is incredibly beautiful. However, because of the hurricane season, we’ve spent virtually all our time in the marina. It’s hot there, sweltering, with no cooling breeze, nothing to do, and no chance to go swimming. It’s a lifestyle that definitely doesn’t suit me. On the other hand, the few times we were able to leave the marina were fantastic. The islands are beautiful, and the people are so open, friendly, and welcoming. But 90% of the time was spent in the marina. To avoid just killing time, we went to Bali. Jan stayed for two weeks, and I stayed for a month. After that, I spent two months in Thailand.

While Jan stayed in Fiji

But now, after nearly two years, we are in Sweden. Our home here is primarily my boat, Kailani, where I have lived year-round since 2020. The boat dates back to 1977 and is quite basic. This spring, there has been a lot of talk about a toxic substance called TBT, which was used in antifouling paints and primers until 1989. There is talk of a total ban and that boats containing TBT will not be permitted to be launched. We do not know if Kailani has it, but the likelihood is high for a boat of that age. Since we do not know when or for how long we will be in Sweden next, we decide to scrape all the paint below the waterline right down to the bare hull.

It is a job we hope will take about four days. Since the paint is toxic, we aren’t allowed to scrape the hull where the boat is currently docked; instead, we’ve been given space in the workshop at Fantasi Marina, where Kailani is moored, beneath the Skaftö Bridge. We aren’t permitted to sleep on board while in the workshop, so we are staying at Örtorp Hostel, just a five-minute drive away.

We, or rather Jan, start by brushing on paint remover and then scraping. It is stuck fast. The first layer comes off a little with a great deal of effort and manual labor. Getting through all the layers of paint feels impossible. Yet, inch by inch, we make progress. The cans of paint remover are disappearing at an alarming rate. Jan scrapes while I drive to the shops to buy more. When the stock in Uddevalla runs out, I have to drive to Trollhättan. We try products from both Biltema and Seasea; Biltema’s seems to work best. And I say that even though I’m not exactly a Biltema fan. The work is grueling, truly grueling, and it feels almost hopeless. What have we gotten ourselves into? Jan tramps around in the scraped-off paint, which is sticky and clings to his boots and clothes. Eventually, the seat of his trousers becomes like a suit of armor, caked in layers of paint. He soldiers on, wearing a gas mask and battling increasingly painful muscles in both arms.

The work goes forward

Men skälvklart otroligt viktigt.

Slowly but surely, we’re making progress and starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The original four days have now turned into fourteen. The bill from the boatyard keeps mounting. As do the costs for all the other essentials we need for the heavy sanding work. The iron keel is rusty, so it also needs to be sanded down and coated with anti-rust paint. Finally, we’re satisfied with the result. Now it’s time to start applying the light primer. I buy countless cans in different colors so we can see where we’ve painted. Five coats are required, with about 12 hours of drying time between each. But this part of the job feels fun; building things up is much more enjoyable than sanding them down. The preparatory work is both tedious and time-consuming though, of course, incredibly important. After sixteen days, we’re finished, and all that’s left is the antifouling paint. We arrive at the yard at 7 a.m. and start painting. The launch is scheduled for the next day, we can hardly wait! An hour or so after we finish painting, we get word that the launch is happening, right now!

After 16 days she is ready

And so it happens. They bring Kailani out of the workshop and drive her over to the launch site. She is lifted up, and we apply antifouling paint to the spots where the supports had been. And just like that, she’s in the water. No water leaks in, the engine starts smoothly, and Kailani is quickly moved to her home berth at D18.

Just a little more
Messenger_creation_7D4CB01B-E204-4CAE-BDA3-71A656EB0548
And finally we are splashed

In addition to all the scraping below the waterline, I’ve washed, polished, and waxed the entire boat. We also had to buy three new house batteries; the old ones lasted ten years, so they certainly performed better than expected. Unfortunately, I also had to get a new starter battery. I bought a new one just two years ago, but it didn’t survive two winters in storage ashore. I’ve realized there really is a difference between Biltema and expensive name-brand batteries. This spring has been extremely expensive. The costs for scraping the hull and repainting it come to over 30,000 kronor, including 16 nights at a hostel, and that’s not even counting the bill from the boatyard yet. On top of that, there were the new batteries, new galley equipment, and a new mattress topper and sheets.

Another issue we’ve struggled with, but still haven’t really tackled, is our storage unit. It’s been overrun by mice; there are droppings and urine everywhere. I’ve had to throw out all the food, including items in cans, glass jars, and plastic packaging. There were even Tetra Paks that they’d chewed right through. Virtually all my shoes have been ruined, and cushions, duvets, mattresses, and other fabric items are either destroyed or covered in mouse droppings and urine. Sorting it all out properly is going to be a massive job. My storage unit is packed floor-to-ceiling: furniture and moving boxes at the back, and everything related to the boat at the front. I sold a house six years ago, so everything I own is in there. Jan sold a house too, but he didn’t keep as much furniture and household gear as I did. Now, I’m buying large plastic bins to store clothes, duvets, pillows, and other fabric items. All food will be kept exclusively in plastic bins as well. We won’t have time to find a cheaper storage unit to switch to this summer; I’m starting work soon and will be working heavily right through to mid-August.

But now, a wonderful summer awaits in Sweden, along with its highlight—Tobias and Sandra’s wedding!

More of Tonga

The day after our dance, Små Grodorna, we move to a new anchorage. Lisa’s bay. A really beautiful anchorage. Well protected and plenty of space. It will be very windy in the coming days so we want to lie safe without worrying about dragging.

Tongan feast!

Tongan feast! Something most sailors want to experience. We are a large group of sailors from six boats who sign up. First there is a dinghy trip to the beach and then a walk to the nearest village where we are picked up by car. There are already more participants at the restaurant and three men are sitting playing and singing Tongan traditional music. After a while the fantastic food is served, laid out on a long table. It is roast pork, chicken, squid, fish and various salads, noodles and rice. Everything tastes incredibly good and there is plenty of food so we are really full. It is nice to, for once, come to a set table. After the meal there is the kava ceremony. ‘Kava is a traditional Tongan drink that is a deeply rooted part of the culture. It is used in everything from royal ceremonies and weddings to social gatherings and religious rites. The drink, which is made from the roots of a plant in the pepper family (Piper methysticum), has calming effects and symbolizes important Tongan virtues such as respect and community.’ Text taken from Google. It doesn’t taste much, perhaps a bit of forest and we might sense a slightly numb feeling on the tongue and lips. After the kava there is a dance show. We are spoiled by what we have seen in Samoa so this show may not leave such a deep impression. But it still sets the mood for the evening and is beautiful to watch. When it is all over we are satisfied with a very successful and pleasant evening. Now it is time for us to walk almost 1 km in pitch black darkness to our dinghies.

Even a cinnamon bun on cinnamon bun day aboard the Swedish boat Bengt. It is a calm and protected bay so we don’t notice that it is quite windy outside.

Idag hissas Jan upp i masten.

Today Jan is being hoisted up the mast. Magnus on Lulu and Dan on Magic are helping. A rig check is a good idea before we go out on several long sailings. We won’t have the opportunity for a professional rig check for a very long time either. Dan has to work hard to winch Jan up and he wonders how many beers Jan has had. Everything looks good and Jan can be lowered back down. At the same time, James on the boat Scout is up in their mast.

Sunday and we want to go to church. We have heard that there is an incredible amount of singing and music and we want to experience that. We stay here in Lisa’s Bay and get to take the dinghy to a beach and then walk a quarter of an hour to the nearest village. Once we arrive at the church, there are about 20 minutes left so we wait outside. Finely dressed people of all ages flock to the church. Surprisingly many small children. The girls are wearing princess dresses and the boys traditional ”skirts” and a kind of woven rugs on top. The adults are just as finely dressed. The men all have jackets and ties and the traditional skirt with a kind of apron in a material that looks like a braided basket. The women have dresses and on top they have various pieces of jewelry around their waists and skirts made of the same basket-like material as the men’s aprons. Many people come up to greet us and ask if we should join the service. Even the priest comes up and shakes our hands. The priest is dressed in bright blue with a tie with a cross on it. We see inside the church that all those who are active in the service are wearing the same bright blue color. And what a wonderful service! A choir sings countless songs and music flows out through the speakers. The children run around between the rows of chairs but are mostly calm and not loud in their play. They are used to being in church every week. In front of us sits a little boy with a lot of running in his legs. He is restless and very curious about us. Jan gets big looks all the time and what at first is a little worried fascination turns into smiles.

Jan and I take a walk on the island and get to walk through tarot plantations, palm trees and lovely greenery. The idea is a slightly longer walk but suddenly we see bulls on the way. We have heard a lot about these bulls and quickly turn around and go back again. Lulu, Angelina and Scout leave for further sailing while Magic and I go back into the village of Neifa. We are both going up on the hard to make sure the boats are nice underneath. Aura is already there being taken cared of.

Sedan trycks hon uppåt lite i taget.

Being hauled out here is sometimes something completely different from how it is done in Sweden. Here it is the same kind of maneuver as it was in Vista Mar in Panama. We, who are quite deep-sea, have to come up when there is extra high tide. A cart is driven under the boat and two men dive down and take care of the lines and other things that make the boat a guest of the cart. Then she is pushed up a little at a time. From below. When she is completely up on the cart, the tractor can drive her up, on the cart, onto land. Once up there it will be a day of intensive work. First high-pressure washing and then all the penetrations are cleaned of barnacles, the propeller is polished to a shiny shine, the anode is replaced and our anti-fouling paint, coppercoat, is activated by sanding it. A day later we are back in.

We also visit the floating bar a couple of times. In addition to that, we will be carrying a lot of provisions and we will buy soap bubbles, balloons, crayons, writing pads and other small things to give to children on remote atolls in the countries ahead of us.

Jan is doing some job in a narrow space

One day we also do a whale safari. The large Humpback whales come to Tonga to rest and give birth for a few months each year. It is Tonga’s largest tourism industry and people from all over the world come here to swim with whales. Everything is done in a controlled manner with a maximum of four people in the water at the same time and the boat that transports them stays a bit away. The whales also seem curious about us humans. We do this trip at the end of the season so many whales have already swam on. The wind is 11-12 m/s and the conditions for swimming/snorkeling are tough. First we follow, from a distance, a lone calf but the guide notices that it will not work. It moves all the time and then it does not work. Then we find a mother whale with a calf. Often, when the whales are here in Tonga, they dive far down into the sea and rest and then come up to get air. It is on those occasions that the opportunity to swim with them is available. The mother with calf also swims all the time and we follow them from a distance. But sometimes they appear right next to us. You see the spray followed by the back and finally the tail fin that disappears into the sea. Suddenly the mother and the baby start jumping out of the water. As if they want to give us a show. Sometimes they are quite close to us but usually a couple of hundred meters away. It is a fantastic experience that we could hardly have dreamed of. The show lasts for over an hour and it feels magical to experience it. Unfortunately, we will not be swimming with the whales but we are still very happy with the experience we have had.

Today is Sunday again and we go to church once again. This time to the big church in the main town here on Vava’u. Birgitta, Kelly and Dan also come along. Tonga stops on Sundays, no one works and most of the very religious population, dress in the finest they have and then decorate their clothes by putting on a traditional ta’ovala. A kind of woven rug that they drape around the waist. This time too the church is almost full and children of all ages participate. The roof is almost lifted by all the singing and music. It is a wonderful event and we feel that we are going to experience part of their rich culture.

Now we are lying at a buoy waiting to check out. It will probably be this afternoon and tomorrow we plan to sail north towards the country of Wallis and Futuna. A small country consisting of three islands with a total of about 12,000 inhabitants. Now we will say goodbye to all our wonderful friends. It is and feels hard. We have become very close to each other. This is the hardest part of sailing. All the goodbyes. Luckily, we have fantastic experiences ahead of us.
