New adventures awaits

Finally! The day has come! After nearly 11 months in Fiji, we are now on our way to pay our final bill and then head to immigration to check out. It feels really strange—and both sad and exciting. Over the past few days, many staff members have stopped us when they saw us, or dropped by our boat, wanting to chat. They’ve heard that we’ve booked our clearance and are sad that we’re leaving them.

The payment goes smoothly, and we head over to immigration. We have an appointment for 10:00 but are hoping they’ll arrive early so we can get going in good time. But we wait and wait. Finally, just before 11:30, they show up. Everything goes smoothly, and we get our papers and passports stamped. Now we’re heading back to Vilja to cast off.

Jan looking at Vuda marina

But first, there is a beautiful farewell. Staff from all over Vuda Marina gather on the dock, hang a flower garland on the boat, and then sing a beautiful song to tell us they will miss us. They even have a banner reading ”Sota Tale – we will miss you.” The singing is incredibly beautiful, and tears stream down our cheeks. What a fantastic conclusion to nearly a year in Fiji and at Vuda Marina. Then comes a lot of waving and well-wishes as we finally set off just after noon.

Vuda is disappering behind us

Earlier that morning, Jan discovered a problem with the solar panels. They weren’t charging the batteries, and without them, we would struggle to maintain our onboard power supply—or rather, it would be impossible, given the high power draw from the full freezer, two fridges, Starlink, and autopilot. Jan went below deck and began testing circuits and clearing space in a frenzy of activity, yet couldn’t find the fault. It had worked yesterday, but not now. Despair set in. What were we to do? Would we have to turn back after just 30 minutes? I suggested he call Bartek—a very friendly Polish man who is an electrical expert and has helped us a great deal. He answered quickly and walked us slowly and systematically through every possible scenario. After more than an hour, Jan and Bartek—working together—found a switch that had been flipped off: a circuit breaker that had likely tripped sometime during the night. What a relief! Now we could continue. We had about seven hours to reach the northern side of Waya Island—which we planned to pass to the north—and then another three-plus hours to clear the reef that extends far out from the entire western coast of Viti Levu, where we had been staying.

Darkness fell an hour or so ago. We have passed Waya and are heading toward the reef opening, where we will change course from northwest to north-northeast. It is a starry night, and the moon illuminates the black sea, making the waves sparkle—as well as the white foam that appears whenever a wave breaks or swirls around Vilja as she ploughs through the water. One star shines brighter, more clearly, and with a slightly more yellow hue than all the others. It lies directly south of us: Sirius—the Dog Star. A star that has historically served as a vital guiding light for Polynesian navigators.

Jan is resting up here in the cockpit while I keep watch. We are being lulled almost to sleep, yet—having not been out sailing for nearly a year—our bodies, and especially our ears, are on high alert for every sound and nuance. It will likely take a few days before we fully settle back into the rhythm of sailing. Even so, I can feel that my body has already begun to adjust to the movements and the rocking of Vilja after just eight hours.

It’s likely going to get a bit chilly overnight. We’ve already noticed this in the harbor—where the wind is barely blowing—that the temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down, and we’ve been wearing long trousers. Now we’re out at sea and the wind is quite brisk; gusts are finding their way into the cockpit and even under the sprayhood, where we usually sit sheltered from the wind. Right now, however, the wind is hitting us on the beam. Unfortunately, it will be blowing straight at us if we tack to head toward Tuvalu. We’ll likely have to steer a slightly more westerly course to account for the wind. The only problem with that is an east-to-west current that will push us sideways even further west; if that happens, we’ll miss Tuvalu and the small atoll containing the capital, Funafuti. Fortunately, the voyage will take around five days, so we’ll have the chance to compensate later on and steer significantly more toward the east.

I’m sitting here in the dark; it’s almost 1:30 AM. A large tanker is approaching from astern, soon to overtake us while following much the same course. I’m thinking about that terrible accident off Tjörn last summer. That’s why I’m calling Anthas on the VHF. I want to make sure they’ve seen us and find out if we can hold our course. We’re sailing relatively close to the wind, so changing course is difficult for us. Plus, Anthas is the one overtaking. I get a quick reply. They have us in sight and say they intend to pass on our port side, so we can maintain our course. A relief. So now I can sit and watch the lights of the large ship as it’s about to pass us.

On the plotter we can see the tanker, Althea. Now she is more on our port side

The sailing is going smoothly. Right now, we’re on a broad reach, with the wind coming from off the quarter, making between six and seven knots. The sun is shining, and there’s a lovely breeze in the cockpit. We have a fishing line out and are hoping for a bite; I’m absolutely dying to eat fish. We didn’t dare buy fish in Fiji due to the risk of ciguatera, a neurological illness found in reef fish and the predatory fish that feed on them. I’m not quite as worried as Jan, but I haven’t felt like cooking separate meals for us. Now we’re out on the open ocean; we’re mainly hoping for tuna, though a mahi-mahi would be perfect, too. The freezer is packed full of lamb and chicken, so if we do get a bite, it’ll be fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! 😄

It is peaceful sitting out here, moving forward on the wind. There is no engine noise, only the sails fluttering slightly, the sea lapping against Vilja, and the sound of the waves. All around us, there is blue, white, and gray: sky, sea, and clouds.

Sailing north

We wake up to a grey, overcast day. The wind is blowing at around 10–12 m/s, and we are really flying along—often reaching speeds of up to eight knots. The sea is quite rough, with large waves making it difficult to move around inside the boat, yet we feel safe. We still have the wind coming in over the quarter—a broad reach—which is probably my favorite point of sail. If we keep up this pace, we’ll arrive as early as tomorrow afternoon, though the wind is expected to die down further north as we approach Tuvalu. Since we need to enter an atoll, we also need to arrive during daylight hours and, ideally, at slack water, the moment when the tide turns from low to high or high to low and the current is at its weakest. Furthermore, we need good visibility inside the atoll to keep a lookout for ”bommies”, coral heads that rise abruptly from deep water to just below or even above the surface. We do have experience with atolls from our time in the Tuamotus (French Polynesia), where we navigated into quite a few of them.

Lycka!!!

Pure joy! About twenty blunt-nosed whales, likely pilot whales, are playing around Vilja! They’ve been here for a long time now, swimming in front of, behind, and on both sides of us, right next to the boat. It’s the first time we’ve had whales playing around the boat like this. Every encounter with dolphins, and now whales, brings such joy; it seems like they have a blast playing around the boat and showing off for us.

Messenger_creation_7F540455-379B-433B-8DFF-6661E773F582
And they were swimming around us for a long time

A bit of excitement in an otherwise rather quiet life, where time drifts by against a backdrop of empty sea and sky. For the past few hours, we’ve had a Chinese fishing fleet off our starboard side. We can see up to seven boats at a time on the radar, but those are just the ones closest to us; there could easily be twice that many. We know they use incredibly long nets and trawls, so we don’t want to get too close and we certainly don’t want to end up with them on our port side as well. We’ve altered our course about 20 degrees to port to ensure we stay clear. Now that darkness has fallen, we can see navigation lights, or more likely, work lights, on one of them; the others are probably further away or unlit. Most of them are small boats, only about eight meters long and three meters wide, considerably smaller than my Kailani. But one of the boats is significantly larger. That’s likely where all the fish is offloaded before being transported to China or another country with which they have an agreement. There were plenty of Chinese fishing boats in the harbor in Samoa.

Here we see some of the fishingboats

My watch, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM, is a mixed bag. First, the Chinese fishing fleet; then a fierce squall with good wind, speeds reaching up to nine knots, followed by thunderstorms and rain; and finally, just before I’m due to go off watch, the wind dies completely. It was expected, but it makes for an uncomfortable ride. The sea remains rough after all the wind we’ve had, and the boat is rolling heavily from side to side. Moving around inside the cabin is difficult, and pulling down one’s trousers to use the head is nearly impossible. We take down the sails and start the engine; after all, the goal is to arrive on Tuesday morning, and the remaining stretch to Funafuti lies within a belt of calm that looks set to persist for quite some time.

We are in a middle of a squall – easy to see on the radar

Framme i Tuvalu och i Funafuti-atollen. Ca 08.30 idag går vi in genom passet. Ingen ström, inget kokande vatten utan helt lugn o stilla.

We have arrived in Tuvalu and the Funafuti Atoll. We entered through the pass around 8:30 this morning. There was no current and no rough water—everything was completely calm and still. We made our way in and anchored near four other sailboats. We know Screesaver from our time in Fiji, but the others are new to us. We called out several times on the VHF radio without getting a reply. Eventually, they did answer, but there was only static, we couldn’t make out what they were saying. So, we took the dinghy ashore. They knew we were there but wanted to come out to the boat to handle the clearance process. We all headed out to Vilja, filled out some paperwork, and answered a few questions. Now we are officially welcomed into the country with stamped passports, and the Tuvaluan flag is flying. A new country to explore!

Leaving Sweden for Fiji and Vilja

Nu är vi äntligen på väg igen. Efter mycket planerande med all vår packning, 4 väskor denna gång.

We’re finally on our way again. After a lot of planning regarding all our luggage—four bags this time.

On our last night in Sweden, I stay with Eva and Bosse, while Jan stays with his daughter, Petra. Our flight isn’t until the evening, and Petra is driving us there. We squeeze ourselves and all our bags into the car and head for Landvetter. We’ve left plenty of time, so there’s no need to rush. Check-in goes smoothly, and there’s no queue at security. Once in the departure hall, we head to the lounge to enjoy some peace and quiet, a bite to eat, and a glass of wine. Now it really feels like the trip has begun.

Next stop Singapore

The following afternoon, we land in Singapore and take a taxi to Hotel Boss, where we will be staying for three nights. It feels wonderful to be traveling, and it’s exciting to get to explore Singapore for a few days. It has been over 15 years since I was last here, and about forty years since my first visit.

After spending the night, we set out to explore. Google Maps makes it easy to find our way around and locate buses and the subway. Our first stop is the Swedish Embassy. There is an election this year, and we left Sweden before early voting began. The process is quick and easy, and we are pleased to have done our part.

From the embassy, we head to Gardens by the Bay. There are several attractions here; while some require a ticket, there is plenty to see just by walking around. It is like a vast park filled with greenery, water features, and giant artificial trees. In a few years, they will likely be covered in greenery, though not all of them are yet. Everywhere you look, you can see one of Singapore’s landmarks: the Marina Bay Sands hotel. It is an ultra-luxurious hotel with a top section shaped like a boat. The cheapest room costs nearly 11,000 SEK, while a suite runs about 27,000 SEK—and those are nightly rates. You can book a spot to visit the bar, but just getting there costs nearly 400 SEK. And, of course, you’ll want to buy a drink once you’re there.

We buy admission tickets for the two greenhouses. First, the Cloud Forest. It is like a lush oasis here—a tropical jungle. And displayed amidst all the greenery are dinosaurs from the movie Jurassic Park.

In the next park, the Flower Dome, there are sections featuring characteristic vegetation from various parts of the world—Europe, South America, Africa, and so on. It is beautifully done. There is also a lily exhibition—enormous quantities of lilies in every imaginable color and color combination. We spend several hours in these two greenhouses, simply enjoying the experience.

We spend the rest of the day first in Chinatown, with its colorful souvenir shops and countless restaurants, and then at the hotel pool area. We have dinner at Maxwell Food Centre, which features a multitude of restaurants serving cuisines from across Asia; they are lined up much like in a large shopping mall, making it hard to choose. From there, we head to the river at Clarke Quay in the city center, where—once again—there is an abundance of restaurants. We sit down for a drink before heading back to the hotel, happy and satisfied with the day.

Ny dag och nya upptäckter och utflykter. I närheten hotellet ligger området Kampong Glam.

A new day brings new discoveries and excursions. The Kampong Glam district is located near the hotel, known for its large Sultan Mosque, street art, and somewhat bohemian shops and atmosphere. Here, the old low-rise buildings—only two stories high—remain, while skyscrapers stretch high into the sky all around. The contrast is beautiful and fascinating.

It’s a huge difference between old part and modern part of Singapore

Nästa stop blir Little India.

We continue to the city center to see another Singapore landmark: the mythical Merlion statue—a lion’s head with a fish’s body, spouting water from its mouth. From here, there is a fantastic view of the modern Marina Bay Sands hotel in one direction and the historic Fullerton Hotel in the other; it sits there in all its charm, surrounded by skyscrapers. Our next stop is Little India. I love it here! The scents, the colors, the music, the food—everything! A visit to Singapore wouldn’t be complete without Little India. We end the day, too, with a glass of wine by the river in the city center. Now we have to pack our bags again, because tomorrow we fly to Fiji.

Lunch with a beer

I suddenly catch a cold during the flight—a terrible headache and a persistent cough. It comes on incredibly fast, out of nowhere. Because of this, the journey becomes a real struggle for me. Time seems to drag, but eventually, we land—early in the morning, Fiji time. The flight from Singapore to Fiji is almost as long as the one from Sweden to Singapore; it’s not something you’d imagine while sitting at home in Sweden. I am completely exhausted as we wait to clear immigration and then for all our bags to arrive. Finally, we have them, though they have to be scanned before we’re all set. It goes smoothly, except that we have to pay a fee to bring our new Starlink Mini into Fiji.

Oh, it feels so good to arrive at the little cabin we rented at Vuda Marina. We collapse into bed and sleep for a few hours. Now, a lot of work awaits regarding Vilja and our luggage. I’m feeling so unwell that I can’t even bring myself to get out of bed. My head is pounding, I’m coughing, and I feel absolutely awful. And it’s only a couple of days before Jan falls ill too. COVID is widespread in Singapore, so we suspect that’s what we’ve caught.

The next week or two pass in a blur. The flu or COVID refuses to let up. We barely have the energy to do anything with the boat, cook, or take care of ourselves and each other. Sure, we get some things done, mostly through sheer willpower, but progress is slow. We had planned to launch after about four days, but it ends up taking over ten days before Vilja is in the water. And not even half of what we intended to do is finished. The plan was to spend two nights at the dock, but that turns into more than a week.

There is a lot to be done. We have a huge amount of gear to stow in a boat that is already packed full Vilja is currently ”packed down,” so everything needs to be put back in place. There is considerable work to be done below the waterline, and the hull sides need polishing and waxing. On top of that, the bimini, solar panels, and sails need to be installed. There is a lot of electrical work, storage compartments need organizing, the watermaker needs to be run, and so on. The list is long and seems never-ending.

We are slowly recovering and attend ”Bonfire Night” at Vuda Marina one Friday. The marina has built a large pile of twigs and other wood, which is set ablaze, creating a massive bonfire that lights up the twilight. Most people at the marina, both boaters and staff, are there. Beer, wine, and gin drinks are served. The atmosphere is great, and we chat with both new and old acquaintances.

One evening, just before we’re due to leave, there’s a barbecue with a large group of sailors, many of them young South Americans.

Aside from work and trying to get healthy, it is wonderful to be back at the marina and see everyone we know. Jan, in particular, has gotten to know the staff well, since he spent much more time at the marina than I did this past spring. They gravitate toward our boat, stop us when we are out and about, tell us how much they will miss us, and ask if we will be coming back.

Båten sjunker nästan av all proviantering.

We have now booked our date for checking out. We are working hard to get everything ready. I’ve made at least eight trips into Lautoka to stock up on supplies; the boat is practically sinking under the weight of all the provisions. Jan has been busy with various boat maintenance tasks. We are heading north toward several countries—some of the most isolated in the world—that are tiny and consist entirely of atolls. Food supplies there are limited, as is fresh water, and finding spare parts for the boat will likely be difficult. There are no harbors, so we will be anchoring in bays and living almost entirely off what we currently have on board  Vilja. Our first destination is Tuvalu, a small country north of Fiji. It is said to be the first country likely to disappear beneath the waves as sea levels rise; its highest point is only about two meters above sea level. The next country on our itinerary is Kiribati—the first (and last) place to celebrate the New Year. It straddles both the equator and the International Date Line, although they have since adjusted the date line in a very clever way. From Kiribati, we plan to sail to the Marshall Islands and then on to the Federated States of Micronesia. We aim to reach Sorong—located in Irian Jaya, the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea—by April. That is our rough plan for the time ahead: seven months in very remote locations across this vast ocean.

Thailand and Fiji – us two now living two differnt lives

Love being in Thailand and on Koh Lanta. I feel at home and it’s my second home. The food, the smells, the markets, the people, the language…well, everything. I came here to Koh Lanta for the first time in April 2004. Then with my neighbours’ eldest daughter, Marie. It was definitely at the end of the season and at that time there were very few tourists here. The roads were mostly red mud, the resorts were easy to count and so were the restaurants. We were pretty much the only tourists, Marie and I. Lovely long walks alone on Klong Dao beach in the morning and extremely cheap food and massages. Last April the whole island shut down. The resorts that had still been open closed and tarps were put around the grounds. Especially down towards the sea. The same with the few restaurants that existed. We still had about 5 days left before we had to fly home so we went to Koh Phi Phi. There, too, we were pretty much the only visitors. We rented a boat with a driver one day and went around the islands. Bl a to Maya bay where we were completely alone with the monkeys. All of this feels almost surreal now. Koh Lanta has had a season with more tourists than everthe visitors. We rented a boat with a driver one day and went around the islands. Bl a to Maya bay where we were completely alone with the monkeys. All of this feels almost surreal now. Koh Lanta has had a season with more tourists than ever. The previous season was also the season with the most tourists before that. Families with children are everywhere and just a month or so ago you had to book a table to be able to go out for dinner. I don’t feel at home with it at all. I enjoyed myself when there were enough tourists, or rather less tourists. But of course there is another side as well. Today, there are an incredible number of people who make a living from tourism – both Thais and non-Thais. Without tourists, they have nothing to live on. This applies to both those who run a business and all those who are employed. So there are often two sides to the same thing.

Jippie!

Yippee! Song Kran – Thai New Year and the world’s biggest water festival! It falls between 13 – 15 April every year. And now we celebrate the year 2569. Add 543 years from our year 2026 and it will be the Thai year. It is according to a Buddhist solar calendar and based on when the Buddha reached Parinirvana (when he died). Here in Thailand many different New Years are celebrated every year. The Western traditional December 31 to January 1, the Chinese which changes a little from year to year depending on the full moon, the Muslim which also changes a little and then the Thai in April.

Ibland med is i. Man blir blöt – genomblöt. Förutom allt vatten så kletas även färg in i ansiktet.

Songkran is a party. With water. Words cannot describe what it is like. Along the road there are huge numbers of people armed with water pistols and buckles. Most in brightly colored clothes. There are huge pools of water. Sometimes with ice in it. And getting a bucket of ice-cold water over your body feels…ice-cold to say the least….Children and adults, local residents and visitors all play side by side. Cars, song thaew, motorcycles and others drive along the road. They stop in front of each ”station” of water and the war begins. The water war. Wetting down as many as possible and as much as possible is the goal. Those on the road versus those in the car. You get wet – soaking wet. And that in just a few minutes. No one is spared, or well, some are actually spared. Give a sign o drive further away from the pavement and it will be accepted. But motorcycles and tuctucs are sprayed with water. Poor tuctuc drivers just doing their job. In Bangkok, I have also seen videos of how even police officers on duty get splashes of water on them. In addition to all the water, color is also washed into the face.

The tradition is that Water symbolizes purification and renewal, where you wash away unlucky events from the past year to face the new year clean and happy. So most Thais say ”Thank you” when they are completely drenched by buckets of water.

Many Buddhist Thais, those not involved in the water wars, go to temples to pour fragrant water over Buddha statues, which is believed to bring good luck and blessings. Here on Koh Lanta, 90% are Muslim and many are of Chinese origin. They traditionally do not celebrate Songkran, but are still accepting and understanding if they also get a shower with water on this one day of the year.

Many Thais also travel home to their families to celebrate, making it a time for rest and reflection. It is the case that many people live separately for large parts of the year in order to get an income. Many children grow up with their grandparents when their own parents have moved away to support themselves and their children.

Today I am at the market. It moves around to different locations every day here on Koh Lanta. I’m looking for a decent sized tuna, chicken breast, prawns, vegetables and some ready-made cheap food. It is full of life and movement and a lot of colors and smells. Since I cook almost all of my food at home, I go here several times a week to get fresh produce. I clean the tuna properly so that only small fillets remain and I sometimes cook the prawns in the Swedish way with dill and a lot of salt. Here in the heat I need salt because I sweat so much. When I’m not cooking the prawns, it’s Thai-inspired dishes with garlic and fresh coriander.

My lovely friend Berit

Oooohhhh how nice! Had a massage for an hour for the first time in three weeks. Don’t know why it took so long. Probably because I was, and am, extremely tired. I already go to bed around 7 p.m

But today it was a massage. Not such a relaxing massage that you just enjoy and almost fall asleep. I like hard massages and took a sports massage. The first thing they asked was if I’m going to scream…and it’s hard. It is not just hands with fingers or palms that are used, but the entire forearm and elbows. It’s hard not to scream when someone pushes their elbow as hard as they can on their body. But, oh, how good it feels afterwards. Like I said, I like hard massages and will probably try to go there at least a couple of times a week. Maybe I will choose an oil massage sometime to be able to enjoy a little too 😄

While I’m here in Thailand, Jan is still in Fiji and at Vuda Marina. There he works a lot with Vilja. Both inside the boat and with the engine and other things. The alternator has come back from repair and rewound. We have been without it for over a year now, so it is welcome. Stowage compartments are emptied, washed out and sorted, gas bottles are repainted as they otherwise rust, septic tanks are cleaned, etc., etc. The work on a boat that is used every day of the year, and also in strong sun and heat, never ends. The boat must be prepared to be left alone in Fiji when both Jan and I are in Sweden over the summer.

It is extremely hot in Fiji, humid heat, and inside the marina there is hardly any fan at all. Inside the boat, we can turn on our portable ac. When it stands at 17 degrees Celsius, the air ”cools” down to about 34 degrees. And then it feels relatively cool. But working in that heat is almost unbearable. In addition, it is even hotter to work outside. The teak deck gets so hot that you burn your feet if you walk barefoot.

But it’s not just work. Jan has gotten to know many other sailors and they sometimes meet in each other’s boats for a cup of coffee or a cold beer to take a break. In the marina area there is also a bar and restaurant, Boatshed, which is very popular. We go there several times a week and now that Jan is alone in the boat it will probably be even more often. On Thursdays there is a quiz there and it attracts many visitors. The team is usually formed based on which table you sit at or together with some people sitting at the bar. The questions are a happy mix of general education and are both easy and difficult, but it is good to have someone from the USA or Canada in the team as many questions are about that part of the world. Once we won but usually we come 1 or 2 points behind the wins.

Back in Fiji, and leaving again plus a cyclone

Oj!

Oh! It’s been a long time since I wrote. Will try to summarize the last month. It will probably be a shorter post because not much has happened.

The flight back to Fiji went well. I’m incredibly tired because I never manage to sleep on the plane – no matter how long the journey is. Take a taxi the short way to Jan and Vuda marina. Keeps me awake for a while but goes to bed and sleeps for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

I 35 graders fuktig värme. Många hyr in dykare som skrubbar rent. Det har även vi gjort några gånger.

The days pass and we leave the marina with Vilja to get out into the archipelago again. Being in the Navy is definitely not for me. Hot, you can’t swim and there’s nothing to do except work on maintenance on the boat. In 35 degree humid heat. The first stop will be Mana Island, where we have been before. We are the only sailboat here. Fiji is really empty of sailing boats now during the cyclone season. We are only staying one night and moving on to one of my goals – Vanua Levu Island. Here is a small cruise ship with room for about 40-50 guests. I don’t think there are more than a maximum of 20 on board. A few hours after we arrive, they leave so we will be alone here as well. The anchorage is known for being met by sharks when you get there. They have learned that the sound of propellers and engines means they have a chance of being fed. When we are out with the boat, we often throw food scraps overboard and fish of all possible sizes are happy when they get food. There are usually a lot of fish living under the boat and some of them eat the growth below the waterline. Since the boat is in the water pretty much all the time and the water is also very warm, above all algae grows in the waterline and under the water. A couple of times a week it needs to be scrubbed away by hand. Otherwise it looks very ugly. When we lie still for a long time in a marina, the build-up becomes even bigger and then affects the speed when we sail. Many hire divers to scrub clean. We have also done that a few times.

The anchorage on Vanua Levu is incredibly beautiful. The sea is crystal clear, the sandy beaches on the two islands are chalk white and the sharks swim around Vilja. There is almost no wind, but the boat still rolls a little. Here there is always movement in the water as it is open to the north and west where the wind usually comes from. The evening with the sunset is indescribable! We are enjoying every minute and it is so nice to be out in the archipelago again.

And a last photo before the sun sets

After two nights we leave. It will blow a little more and then we are not in a good position here. The goal is a cove in the far south of Naviti Island. We have also been there before and know that we are well situated there. We get there and anchor in almost exactly the same spot as last time. We mark in an app where we anchor so it is easy to see where we have been. Here we stay for five nights and take it easy and enjoy. It is peaceful and relaxing, although the wind does pick up quite a few times as it makes its way over the high green-clad mountains.

But now it’s time to get back into the marina. I will be leaving Fiji in a few days and there is some work to do before then. It takes us about seven hours to get back and we get, as usual, good help to add. Now that we are in port, we are working at full capacity. Especially Jan. Sails are taken down and folded. They must be submitted to the sailmaker to be reviewed and reinforced where necessary. The dinghy is taken up on land and scrubbed underneath. Every cabinet and drawer inside the boat is emptied and cleaned with, among other things, vinegar, which helps prevent mold growth. We also go through our entire ship’s pharmacy plus private medicines. Make lists where we write down everything we have plus the number and where each thing is kept. This has been done once before by our guest Marie but it was a year ago and we haven’t updated since then. But it’s hot here! In port we have a portable AC. It says 17 degrees, but it’s 34 degrees inside the boat – with the AC on. I don’t even want to think how hot it would have been without it

The days go by and suddenly it’s Sunday. The day I will fly to Thailand via Singapore. It’s been two years since I was in Thailand and Koh Lanta, which is like my second home. Imagine that we lived here every winter for five years. Tobias went to a Swedish school and we had a lot of social interaction.

The journey is long and arduous. The flight leaves at 22.20 in the evening and will take over 11 hours directly to Singapore. Almost as far as from Northern Europe to Bangkok. As usual, I don’t sleep at all and we land around 04.30 in the morning, local time. There is a 4 hour time difference between Fiji and Singapore. There will be many long hours at the airport. I don’t fly on until 3.40pm so that’s 11 hours waiting time. Thinking of going into Singapore but feeling too tired to get anything out of it. The hours pass and the last time I go into a lounge where the chairs are much more comfortable and there is food to eat. Finally, it’s time for boarding and I will fly the short distance to Krabi. Great!

A non stop flight about 11 hours

I have booked a taxi that will come and meet me and once I arrive I fall into bed. I will be here for about two months before I fly home to Sweden. Jan is still in Fiji. There is a lot of maintenance work and major work to be done at Vilja. He starts already the day after I leave. The whole boat will be turned upside down. Work that has not been able to be done when there are two of us on board.

I hope for a lot of socializing and relaxation. But I have a lot of things to catch up on too. The first week I’m here is the Laanta Lanta festival in Old Town. I go there with Pierre on the first day to see the parade. It’s a big folk festival with food stalls, lots of people, joy and high spirits.

New cyclone is heading towards Fiji. Jan is left alone and preparing. The staff at the marina take it seriously. All boats are moved into the inner basin which counts as a hurricane hole. Chains are attached to the stern, fenders are lashed with ropes under the boat, six ropes in a cross from stern to shore, bimini is removed, solar panels are lashed, etc. The rain pours down for a couple of days and the wind picks up. Today, the worst day, winds of over 70 knots (35m/s) are measured inside the inner basin and the rain continues to pour down and large parts of the island of Vitu Levu are flooded and houses blown to pieces. The heart of the typhoon, fortunately, is south of Fiji with winds more than twice as strong. In a couple of hours the worst will be over.

Relaxing in the pool

Two weeks out on the Islands

It feels magically nice to have left the port. Now we are on our way to new places to discover. We have released the fishing line so now we are also hoping for a pacifier. Today’s goal has not been decided yet, but we intend to get a good distance up into the Yasawa Archipelago. It is the westernmost band of islands in Fiji. At the very top of the NW is the fairly large island of Yasawa. The goal is to get there but it will take a few days. And if the low pressure that is further west of us gets here, we will only make it there and turn around again before we have to get into port and hurricane proof once again. We naturally hope to be out much longer

Here is a map of Fiji. The marina is on the west side of the big island. And Yasawa archipelago is where I have marked

It’s really dark gray around us now and the rain is coming. The storm is moving quickly and it has already started to rain and soon it is pouring down. Based on that and the wind direction, we have now chosen a place for an overnight stop. We are located at the Paradise resort and on the island closest to us there is a wall of verdant trees that shelter thousands of bats. At first we think it’s birds that are making noise and flying around, but we see from the way they fly that it’s bats instead.

The night is calm and we get up relatively early and get ready for a new stage north in the archipelago. The goal today will be the Blue Lagoon. We go on the outside of the archipelago because the winds are weak. Once there, we meet Screensaver, which has already been out for a little over a week. It’s always nice to meet friends again. Here there is a beautiful beach out on a headland and we decide to have a bbq the next day

The sun is shining and it’s warm. We meet on the beach and first take a long, lovely bath in the warm and crystal clear water. Then it’s time to collect pieces of wood, coconuts and dry sawdust to start the fire. Inside the palm trees, there is plenty of it. But there are also coconuts out on the beach. It’s been a long time since we had a bbq now so it’s really long awaited. Slices of lamb are marinated, potato dumplings made of foil are ready and to go with it a good tzatziki and salad topped with mango. The fire takes off and then it becomes a perfect glow. It’s still quite early in the day, more of a late lunch than an early dinner. The downside to eating on the beach is all the sand. Sand gets on the pillows, on the body, on the hands and therefore also in the food so it crunches between the teeth. But it still tastes good and it’s easy to go into the water and wash away the sand. When we have finished eating, we see dark clouds coming towards us quickly. Probably full of a lot of rain. And with the clouds it also starts to blow. So we hurry to put out the fire, clean up after ourselves and hurry back to our boats with the dinghies. But this was a long-awaited feature in our boating lives.

New day and new bay. We end up in Nebukeru bay in the southernmost part of the large island of Yasawa. There is a cave here that Yanina would like to visit. Jan and I instead go into the small village to make a sevusevu. We have a kava root with us to give to the village elder and ask for permission to anchor and move around the village. This tradition lives on in all the villages of Fiji. A woman meets us on the beach and we talk a little about the village while she shows us the way. It is a small village, only about 30 people and they live mostly by fishing. Except for a few who work at one of the countless resorts around the archipelago. They are proud of their school where about 30 children from a few villages go. Right now they are installing large solar panels at the school so that the children can use laptops and also for washing machines at school. The teachers come from the mainland and live at the school during the school year. Right now it’s school holidays, but in a week or so the children’s laughter will be heard in the school grounds.

The village chief is busy but his wife and another woman accept our gift and we are warmly welcomed to the village. We are asked if we want to have dinner, of course for a fee, with one of the women the next day. We would like to, but we must first look at the weather forecast because there is a storm with the wrong wind direction that may come in. So we agree to decide by the next morning.

Jan and me together

Unfortunately, the wind looks like it’s coming, which also means we can’t continue further north as was our plan. Instead, we head south again. We have looked out a bay that looks to be well protected, about four hours’ journey away. The navigation in Fiji can be a bit demanding. Our instruments we use, our plotter and Navionics on an app on the mobile, are not reliable. There are far more coral reefs and in other places than we can see. So we support it with satellite images where we can discern where the coral reefs are. This means that we have to zigzag between reefs below the surface of the water in seemingly open sea. So a distance that doesn’t look that long becomes significantly longer. In addition, at these passages we have to slow down properly so that we don’t run the risk of driving at high speed into a coral reef or a boomie – a smaller coral formation that rises up from the bottom right up to just below the water’s surface. Of course, we also have a lookout in the bow during these passages or when we enter a bay.

It will be the bay at the village of Soso on the island of Naviti where we anchor. Yanina rushes ashore with a kava root to be able to snorkel. Jan and I then go into the village and wander around. This is a relatively large village where all houses have their own solar panels. The church, a Methodist church in the middle of the village, is incredibly richly decorated with wooden formations representing events from the Bible both around the pulpit, on the walls and up on the ceiling.

Hmmm…..

Today we will go into the village and possibly buy some souvenirs. Oh, how many people there are who want to sell things like jewelry, sarongs, woodwork, shells, etc. The prices are reasonable and I buy some jewelry for myself and Jan buys things for his grandchildren.

We stay two nights at this anchorage and are safely protected from wind and storm before we move around the corner to a beautiful anchorage on a chalk white beach. Here we relax, swim a lot and just take it easy.  It is such a relaxing and lovely life when we are out at anchorages. Wonderful swimming in the sea, fantastic views, small walks in the villages and lovely meetings with the locals.

Here the scenery is dramatic with high green-clad hills and mountains and pitons rising up against the clear blue sky in proud majesty. The color reproduction is fantastic. In both villages we hand over the kavarot to the village elder and are warmly welcomed to stay.

Vilja – our home

Unfortunately we then have to turn back to the marina. On the one hand, it will be a bit more windy next week and towards the end of the week there is also a risk of a cyclone. The food and water are also starting to run out so we need to go to the grocery store and fill up the water tanks. A proper shower also looms.

In about a week we will leave Vilja in Fiji for a few weeks as we fly to Bali for a break from life here. Before that, we have to hurricane-proof the boat again. So looking forward to going now. Already started packing, but it won’t be a big one. A little long-awaited shopping looms in Bali.

Cyklon-warning

The cyclone warning is now a fact. Far to the west of us, a storm is building up. Most sailboats flee to New Zealand or Australia at this time of year, but due to our problems, we have to find the best alternative here instead. Vuda Marine – where we have space, has a so-called ”Hurricanehole”. A hurricanehole is a well-protected harbor where sailors come to protect themselves and be sheltered from hurricanes or the cyclone. Often it is in mangrove swamps where the roots protect and you can moor like a spider’s web around the mangrove. There can also be protected lagoons that are like small ”pockets” in nature… Vuda Marine has built an artificial ”hurricanehole” which is among the best protected places in Fiji. South of Vuda Marine there is also an area of mangroves where many people flee with their boats when a warning comes.

Now it’s a storm system spreading from the Solomon Islands via Vanuatu and possibly here to Fiji if it builds up properly. There’s no name for the cyclone yet but it’s called ”eight”

Messenger_creation_4E3E521D-469F-452C-ACC3-4A2CCE946444
”Eight” on the way to Fiji

We dock, with the stern inward, about 3 meters from the dock. The staff shows us exactly where we should lie so that the sailboats do not risk hitting each other’s masts. That’s why we lie a little zigzag. At the stern we are attached with crossed lines that are anchored with chains that are attached to large beams that are buried far down in the ground. In addition, we have lines straight behind on both sides of the boat. At the bow we are attached to buoys but we have also removed our anchor so that the chain can be attached to a large buoy with a lot of weight at the bottom in the middle of the basin.

Our place when there is a cyklon-warning

They give us a looooong list of preparations we have to make. 19 pages. Among other things, all the foresails must be taken down. We have two and they are taken down, folded together easily on deck and stowed into the boat in the forecastle. We will have at least three fenders on each side of the boat and they will be attached with ropes under the boat so that they sit together as a pair. We also choose to have a large car deck on each side of the boat. Everything loose must be lashed down properly or stowed away. Our solar panels must also be removed or lashed and the bimini, our sunroof over the cockpit, must also be taken down. There are incredible forces in a cyclone. We are waiting with the bimini and solar panels until we know more whether it will be built up or not. It is a lot of work to both take it down and put it back up again. They downgrade the cyclonewarning on day two but the next day it is upgraded again.

Now we have ”packed” it together

Cyclones are categorized from 1 – 5, with number 5 being really serious. The hurricane in Jamaica early last fall was a category 5 and we have all seen the devastation there. Cyclone, hurricane and typhoon are the same thing but have different names in different parts of the world. It is an intense low pressure that forms over oceans with high water temperatures. The wind speed is from 118 km/h or 32.7 m/s, but it is often significantly stronger.

At the marina, the staff is working hard. Boats in the water must all be turned with the stern inward, moorings and fenders are checked and they check that all boats have followed their list. Boats on land must be secured with strong straps into the ground where the anchors are deeply buried and everything loose must be lashed down or stowed away.

We wait anxiously and follow the intended path. IF there is a cyclone, it seems to be heading north of where we are.

The bad weather ”Eight” is now in Vanuatu. But still no cyklon

We then receive the news that there will be no cyclone but a storm with a lot of rain will move in. Great! We will manage this time anyway. However, the weather is not what you hope for when you are in Fiji. Rain that becomes torrential downpours and strong winds. Flooding on the roads and generally sad. You just have to make the best of it.

After Lucia the rain subsides, fortunately. It is difficult for us to get ashore even without rain as there is a big difference between high and low tide and we are 3-4 meters astern from the jetty. We still have a beautiful place with a tree called Christmastree here. It is a tree with green leaves and absolutely stunning red flowers. The flowers only come around Christmas time so the name is perfect.

Our fridge is broken so we call for help on it before we leave the marina to go out to Muscet Cove again. Lying with Vilja here in the marina is the last thing we want. Screensaver has already gone there. We also go into the nearest town, Lautuka, to stock up and drop off our intercoms which are also broken. The fridge turns out to be empty of gas so they fill it up. Unfortunately they can’t repair the intercom as a board in one of them is broken.

It’s so nice to get out among the islands again. Clean water that we can swim in, the opportunity to grill at a bar and nice company. One day we spend several hours by the pool at a resort. It may seem strange that we want to swim in a pool when we have the whole lovely sea. But changing is satisfying and it feels luxurious. During the day they start the traditional grilling of a whole pig. It looks quite macabre with a rod inserted through the mouth to the back of the pig. It spins around this rod with glowing logs around it. In total, it will take about five hours before it is finished.

Waiting and waiting and lots of decicions to make

Everything is definitely not just paradise on our trip around the world. Here is a more distant post. In the last post I wrote about how we had to go down to Fiji for an important repair of the boat. At the time we thought our stop here would be a maximum of five days. And we would check out and sail on.

That’s not going to happen. We have to wait almost a week with our recording, until Monday, November 10, and today, Thursday, November 13, Vilja is launched again. We go out for a walk to make sure there are no water leaks. It feels good and after half an hour we are back in the harbor and dock at a pier. Here everyone is lying with the stern inward and the bow is attached to two buoys with the help of a boat with personnel on it.

På måndag den 17:e skall vi lämna. Trodde vi ja. Under helgen upptäcker Jan läckage där propelleraxeln kommer in i båten. Suck.

On Monday the 17th we are leaving. We thought so. During the weekend Jan discovers a leak where the propeller shaft enters the boat. Sigh. We are already late for our long sailing trip but leaving when the boat is leaking is not an option. So instead of checking out they lift us back onto land and support us with supports. It is hot to be in the boat on land, it is hard to climb up and down a ladder and it limits the use of the kitchen and our toilet cannot be used. In addition, it will be sandy on board. A real setback.

Jan surprises us by renting an apartment with a large patio right by the sea for two nights. It will be a welcome break. Own real shower, kitchen, a big bed and the lovely patio. It is sooo much more fun to cook here. Wonderful to sit on the terrace and nice to sleep in a wide, lovely bed. Taking a little break from our messy boat feels like a treat for the soul.

Because on board the boat it is chaos. We have rolled out our portable AC and placed it in the salon. It can only cool a small area. So we are now sleeping in the salon. The aft berth is empty as that is where you can access the propeller shaft and parts of the engine and that is where Jan saw the leak. Mattresses from there and backrests etc. have to be pushed into the foredeck which is now crammed with things from floor to ceiling, the AC is in the middle of the floor together with the freezer which we have to step over when we move. Everything feels difficult and messy. But it is nice to get the temperature down inside the boat, to around 25 degrees, at least.

They quickly get to work. The propeller shaft will be removed, the rudder will also have to be removed to get the propeller shaft out. They plan new holes for bolts and will then re-plaster around where the propeller shaft enters the boat. All to strengthen the structure.

And now the plastc work is done

Today it is pouring rain and no work can be done. It is just for us to be patient and wait out the work. There is not much to do here so we spend most of the time inside the boat with the AC on, watching TV on our mobile, listening to a book and surfing the web on our mobile. The nearest town is half an hour away by taxi.

They are starting work again but it is taking a while. We have now been on land for over a week but on Thursday 27th November we will be back in. Over three weeks after we arrived in Fiji. We are really looking forward to that!

These days we are also thinking a lot about how we are going to plan the coming months. Our prerequisite is that we have to be somewhere where we can leave the boat June to August 2026. Since we are going home then. The only options are here in Fiji or Sorong in Indonesia. It is also cyclone season south of the equator so it can be risky to be here. We come to the conclusion that we have three options. The first is to sail as planned. It will be a very aggressive sailing as we are now a month late and it was already a tough and long distance. About the same as from Gothenburg to Tanzania. It probably sounds strange when you don’t see the whole picture of how far it is. But we will hardly have time until May next year. The next option is to sail all the way to the Marshall Islands, spend the cyclone season there and sail back here in May next year. Then we are north of the danger of cyclones but it feels tough to sail back again next year. Because we will not have time to Indonesia unfortunately. The last option is to stay in Fiji, despite the cyclone season. Then we need to know that we have space inside a port that is prepared for cyclones. Vuda, where we are located, has an elaborate system, but here it is already full. We think and think. It is a difficult and tough choice. After a day or so the marina says that they have received a cancellation so there is space for us here.

This is what it looks like

So we have made choice number three. To stay in Fiji for a long time. The boat will be here until September next year. For the next four months we can sail around if we want. But we have to be close to the marina if a cyclone warning comes. It usually comes about three days in advance in this part of the world and it takes us two days to cyclone-proof the boat. So unfortunately we don’t get to see much. But at least we have the opportunity to get out. Because sitting in the boat in the marina for several months doesn’t appeal that much. It may sound like a luxury problem to have to be in Fiji for many months. Then you have to keep in mind that we are not living in a resort but in a cramped and messy little boat. In a marina where we can’t sunbathe, swim or live a tourist life. If we had time, we would have sailed on. But then we might miss the wedding in August next year. This also means that our return to Sweden with Vilja will be postponed by 1 year. So the choice has not been easy.

Vuda marin. And we have a berth in the round basin where we can escape if a cyclon hits us

Now we have to make the best of the situation. Be out and sailing as much as we can. Rent a car again some day and see a little more of the main island. Have time to go to the dentist and dermatologist, get to know and hang out with other sailors, fix everything that needs to be fixed with the boat and maybe fly to New Zealand and stay there for a few weeks. We’ll definitely have a great time!

Och idag har vi blivit sjösatta igen! Underbart! Och vi upptäcker inget nytt läckage.

And today we have been launched again! Wonderful! And we do not detect any new leaks.

Time to splash!

Time to go into town and do some shopping. First it’s the vegetable market and then the grocery store. Food and vegetables are a little cheaper here than in the rest of the South Pacific, so it’s a little more fun to shop. But still sky-high prices compared to Sweden. With fresh provisions, we’re going out into the archipelago around here. Now we can finally see a little more of Fiji!

Short and unplanned stop in Fiji

We thought they would lift us straight away. That’s what it sounded like in the email conversation. But we won’t be lifted until Monday. Maybe just as well because our spare part is stuck in customs at the airport. It should have arrived yesterday but we haven’t seen smoke from it yet. Today we have a laundry day. Three large machines with laundry, mainly towels, bed linen, pillows and rags. It doesn’t really get clean when we hand wash in cold water, which we usually do.

Här, dessutom i varmt vatten. Vilken lyx!

Marinas are expensive and far from the turquoise water and beautiful beaches that we love. But a luxury is being able to shower properly. Here, in hot water too. I can’t remember how many months ago we took such a lovely shower. Being able to stand under warm, running water and have time to soap yourself and wash your hair without having to think about every single drop of water that comes out of the shower. Just enjoy and feel really clean. What a luxury!

A shower like this is heaven!

If we get a rental car, we will explore Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, during the weekend. If it doesn’t rain heavily as the forecast says. Unfortunately, we won’t have time to get out to all the fantastic islands here. Many people spend year after year in Fiji because the islands are so beautiful, the diversity is so great and it’s a little cheaper than the rest of the South Pacific. We would have loved to do it, but our time out on a long voyage is limited. Children and grandchildren back home are tempting and we have a long way home. We have only come halfway around the world yet and the next half is longer than this half. With several oceans to cross. If everything goes as planned.

Under nästan slavlika förhållanden.

Time for a road trip on the island, Viti Levu, in Fiji. We are located in a marina on the SW side called Vuda marina. This is where we were so incredibly welcomed a few days ago with song and dance. Now we want to go out and see part of the island. There is left-hand traffic in Fiji, which is not so strange with their close cooperation with New Zealand and Australia. Also, over a third of the island is inhabited by descendants of the Indians who were imported as labor on the sugar cane plantations around the turn of the century 1800-1900. Under almost slave-like conditions. The biggest mistake you make when you are not used to left-hand traffic is turning on the windshield wipers instead of turn signals and roundabouts are difficult. It is easy to forget to look to the right. We both helped each other, Jan behind the wheel and me who reminds you to keep to the left and look to the right. That’s when I have to shout ”watch out” a few times.

Vårt första stopp blir vid Garden of the Sleeping giants.

Our first stop will be at the Garden of the Sleeping Giants. A botanical garden with countless orchids and a path through the jungle. It is incredibly beautiful with the diversity of flowers even though it doesn’t seem to be the right season for many of them. It is purple, yellow, pink, orange, lime, white, cream etc. With incredible patterns and formations. The walk is enjoyable, cool under the shade and absolutely worth the visit.

And so is this

After this wonderful park we drive on to Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple. As we wrote, a significant part of the population in Fiji originates from India. They have retained much of their culture, including clothing, food, language and religion. There are therefore many temples to visit. We choose one of the largest and most colorful Hindu temples in the entire Pacific. The gods Shiva and Parvati are worshipped here. There is a dress code to be allowed to enter, so I cover my shoulders and knees and Jan borrows a sarong to tie around her. We also have to take off our shoes and go barefoot. It is very beautiful and colorful. Several beautiful ceiling paintings, pillars in countless colors and statues of different gods adorn the temple. We are not allowed to take photos inside the temple, but we are welcome to take photos outside. In small rooms there are holy men who welcome offerings and bless worshipers with incense and a dot on the forehead. Everything feels genuine, beautiful and peaceful.

The journey takes us further along the Swedish coast. We don’t really have a big goal, but we see on a map that there are large sand dunes in one place. It is Fiji’s first national park, so we read on. What we don’t think about is that it is blazing sun, scorching hot and not a cloud as far as the eye can see. We start the walk but quickly realize that it will not be possible to walk far in the burning hot sand in just sandals. And with our heads under the scorching sun. We come to a viewpoint where we see a bit of the sand dunes and decide to stop there and turn back. Instead we go to a large and air-conditioned grocery store 😆. A bit of contrast. We had planned to do some provisioning when we still have a car to drive the things back to the boat.

After that stop, I would like to go to a traditional village about 100 kilometers away. It is already after lunch, but if the road is good, it should be fine. For about 30 kilometers we drive on a paved, albeit slightly curvy, road inland, far from the coastal road. But suddenly the asphalt runs out and we drive on a bumpy gravel road. Unfortunately, we have to reduce our speed to about 20 km/h. We soon realize that we will not make it. We are not only going TO the village, but we are also going back. So, sadly, there will be no visit there. Instead, we go to another grocery store to stock up on more provisions. First, they took a lot of our food when we checked in, and secondly, there are not many grocery stores in the countries we will be spending the next six months in. I also appreciate being able to buy food with an Indian flavor.

A lot of dirty water in the river

It’s Monday and we’re woken up early in the morning. We were supposed to be lifted at lunch but they’re already here just after 7am. We put on a dress and two minutes later we’re both ready. Vilja has to back into a machine that lifts us and we’re hoisted up. Shortly afterwards the mechanic arrives who will replace our ”cutlass bearing” that sits on the propeller shaft. The reason we’re stuck in Fiji. The days on land are flowing, the hull is being cleaned again, even though it looks very nice. It’s only been a month since we were on land and did a great job then (read Jan). It’s incredibly hot on land and the energy is running out. The air is completely still and there are also plenty of flies and mosquitoes. The best place, in my opinion, is inside the boat in front of a fan.

We also have another problem we need to address. Our freezer is not working very well. Another mechanic has picked it up but is unable to repair it. The part that is broken cannot be found in all of Fiji. This is a big problem. Without a freezer, I don’t want to be responsible for the food. It would have to be lentil and bean-based food all the time except for some canned tuna and noodles. A one-sided diet I don’t want to live with. After all, this is our home and it is often difficult to stock up on fresh food and vegetables. The freezer helps us have fish, chicken, sausages, meat, shrimp, etc. etc. Indispensable in my opinion. We are trying to convert one of our two small fridges into a freezer but can’t get the temperature down. I start desperately writing to companies in New Zealand that sell freezers. I get answers and they can certainly help us but it will take weeks. Finally, we get an answer from the mechanic who tried to repair our freezer that there is probably one here in Fiji. We are eagerly waiting for it now. First it will have to be transported here for about eight hours from the capital. So now we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will work as it should when it arrives here this afternoon.

Our plan was to stay here for about three days in total. Now we are on the tenth day. The money is flying away and so are the days. We already had a tough route with about 5000 nm, (almost 9500 km, so 9500 miles, imagine from Gothenburg to Tanzania approximately), and four countries in six months. Now we will have to choose one country to make it to Irian Jaya in Indonesia by mid-May next year. Tobias, my son, is getting married so I have to go home and we have to find a place to leave the boat. There is no one between here and Sorong in Indonesia. Everything in between is a big ocean and small atolls.

Jippie!

Going to the big food courts here is a pleasure! There is a lot of exciting stuff and the prices are significantly lower than the rest of the Pacific. The range of Indian goods is huge and exciting. Spices in abundance, different kinds of bread, roti flour, stir-fries etc. etc. We end up buying about 1/3 of what is on the list but end up bringing a lot of unplanned stuff with us instead. As usual, we will be developing our cooking with new inventions. Our new freezer has also arrived. Not as robust as the previous one and it doesn’t freeze at the top, but we can fill it with meat, shrimp and fish! Yay!

Finally it’s time to check out and sail on towards Tuvalu. We’ve done a lot of things – more than planned and now we’re waiting for about six – seven days out at sea. Start sailing north

Today we leave Tonga. And not only Tonga but our wonderful friends Kelly and Dan on Magic and Birgitta and Lasse on Aura. It is with tears in our eyes that we, almost simultaneously, leave the last anchorage on Tonga. We sail north and they sail south. I really hope we see each other again. We will follow each other on social media but it will never be the same. Last night we all gathered at Vilja for one last sundowner together. There were many hugs.

We are sailing at a good speed now. Light wind at about 9 m/s and over seven knots on average. We don’t want to sail too fast because then we will arrive at Wallis in the middle of the night. This tiny country with barely 12,000 inhabitants, about the same size as Åre municipality. It will be exciting to get there and to experience such a desolate place. The first day out here at sea can be a bit rough and the last day there is a risk of thunderstorms. We will, in the future, sail in areas with unstable winds that both change strength and direction and a greater risk of thunderstorms and many squalls.

It’s soporific to be on board Vilja, rolling in the waves. It’s almost midnight and it’s been a long time since darkness enveloped us. I’m on watch and have two hours left. I’ve just finished an audiobook and started a new one. My thoughts are spinning and it’s starting to dawn on me that we’re completely alone out here in this part of the Pacific. A dizzying feeling. For the next six months or so, we’ll be sailing where hardly any other sailors are. And the sea is big. Very big.

Men liten smolk i bägaren. Öde atoller i fjärran o knappt besökta länder.

Just over a day on the road now. We are looking forward to Wallis which is supposed to be ”a hidden gem”. But a small smol in the cup. The shaft to the propeller is loose and Jan is worried. Do we have to change our plans? Where can we lift the boat? How many hours can we run with the engine? Should we have stopped in Tonga and had it fixed? Many questions and we are looking at alternatives. Maybe back to Tonga? Maybe to Fiji? Or more or less a long-distance sail to Lombok in Indonesia? None of that appeals and all the alternatives mean that we miss all the places I dream of. Deserted atolls in the distance and barely visited countries.

The sun is getting down

On the last night we slow down to get in the morning and not in total darkness. Long before we arrive we can see that the sky is lit up by all the lights on the small island. We make it through the pass and then motor to the first anchorage – in front of the container port. We are the only sailboat here. Wonderful and strange feeling! It is Saturday morning and we don’t know if we can check in during the weekend. And if we can’t, do we have to stay in the boat for two days? We launch the dinghy and make our way to the shore and the customs office, which has an office here. It looks closed but inside a room there is a man. Jan knocks on the door and he opens it. It is a security guard who barely speaks English. This is French territory and since tourism barely exists, few people speak English. The guard calls the police and an hour later they come and we fill out two papers. Then it’s done. Fastest and easiest check-in in years. We are in ”France” so our passports are not stamped and we have unlimited time here. We ask if there is a lot of tourism on the island and they proudly answer ”Last month there were 5 boats here”

We walk to a supermarket while we wait for the police. It’s expensive here. Very expensive. A head of cauliflower 90 kronor, 1 liter of cream 125 kronor, a small camembert 70 kronor, a small bag of chips 85 kronor etc. etc. We can’t understand how they manage on their relatively low salaries.

Wallis and Futuna consist of 3 islands. About 8000 people live on Wallis, about the same as Mellered. About 4000 people live on Futuna, which is a full day’s sailing south, and only 1 person lives on the last island, Alofi. There are lots of attractions here and the diving is supposed to be nice with untouched coral. However, there are no buses or rental cars, so it is difficult to get around. The cargo ship comes twice a month with supplies. In the capital, Mata Utu, there are two grocery stores, a hardware store and a few clothing stores. It is very empty everywhere, no traffic and no people on the streets.

When we are done with the check-in we make our way to our anchorage. The plan is to visit at least three. This one is by two small islands a little way from Mata Utu but still possible to take the dinghy in. Since it is the weekend there are a few boats there with locals who want to enjoy swimming and water games. We take the dinghy in and enjoy life and look at the children playing on land and in the water. They seem quite shy because they do not make contact with us and do not really dare to look us in the eye.

Our plan is to move to the next anchorage, which should have fantastic snorkeling on Monday afternoon. Monday comes and the rain pours down, at the same time it blows a lot with white foam on relatively high waves. It is therefore impossible to move us. Unfortunately the rain and wind persist for several days so the stay on Wallis will not be quite as we had imagined.

We also talk about what to do with the repair of the boat. When we left Tonga we thought we could lift Vilja in Sorong in Indonesia but on the way we got the news that it wouldn’t work. Vilja is too heavy and deep. That changes the conditions a lot because in that case it’s about 7000nm before we can lift off at Lombok. And we don’t plan to get there for another 1.5 years. We think about the alternatives and decide that the best thing is to sail south again, to Fiji. Viktor, Jan’s son, has ordered the spare part and is mailing it there, we talk to the marina and a mechanic.

So we leave Wallis without really having seen anything. Unfortunately. But the cyclone season has started and Fiji is in the risk zone. That’s why we want to hurry there, get Vilja repaired and then sail north again. It’s cyclone-free there.

After 24 hours we can see Futuna. The other Island in this small country

The sailing down will take about four days, then it’s six-seven days north to Tuvalu, which is our next destination. So this whole extra trip will take two to three weeks. Our insurance does not apply from today, November 1, to named cyclones. We really hope that there won’t be one like the one in Jamaica in the near future.

Det är en ganska behaglig segling. Lite rulligt, framförallt första dygnet, men 15-20 knops vind i snitt.

It’s a pretty pleasant sail. A little rough, especially the first day, but 15-20 knots of wind on average. Only a few squalls at night and no thunderstorms directly above us. It’s almost a full moon so the nights are lit up by the sea and the sky that sparkles in silver and crystal. The days flow by and we read, enjoy and relax. A couple of times a day we turn on the Starlink and get the opportunity to get weather forecasts, read emails and have some contact with the outside world.

”Sailboat dead ahead of us. Fiji Navalship intend to board you!” A ship from the coast guard calls us on VHF. They don’t call our name and we can’t see any boat either with the naked eye or on the plotter. First. We answer anyway and at the same time see a ship towering diagonally ahead. We quickly lower the sails, start the engine and lie still. Shortly afterwards, a larger rubber dinghy with six people on board comes towards us. Three of whom come aboard. The other three circle around us in the dinghy as if to make sure we don’t run away or become aggressive. They tell us that they’ve seen us for a while and that they’re going to do a routine check. A lot of drugs have been smuggled from Central and South America via the Pacific nations on sailboats to Australia and New Zealand so we understand why. A man goes down into the boat and checks various cupboards, drawers and nooks, one sits and chats with us and one stands guard in the stern. We know that we have nothing illegal with us and feel quite relaxed. After about half an hour the man down in the boat is ready, they shake our hands and thank us for letting them come aboard and for our cooperation. Then we continue towards the marina.

What a welcome to Vuda Marine in Fiji! 10 people standing and singing and playing music for probably 15 minutes! Feeling so grateful and blessed. Never experienced anything like it. Wish we had more time here in Fiji but we just want to repair and then sail north again. If it goes in three days we are happy. But…we certainly wish we had more time, at least two months to explore this amazing and beautiful country. With incredible people.

Then comes the bureaucracy…first about 15 pages of paper to fill out. Then a review of all the food we have on board. In all the cupboards. And the woman who is with me is not merciful. We have provisions to sail to Tuvalu and have the freezer full of meat and fish. And the fridge full of dairy products. We also have vegetables in abundance. Especially onions and garlic. Usually have a lot of it. The woman who is with me takes everything…absolutely all meat. Even canned meat. She speaks with real disgust about pork like bacon and salami. Which poisons Fiji, according to her. Food worth probably 2000 kronor, and which we will not be able to get here, just disappears and is thrown away. Also all the vegetables. Luckily, we get to keep all the dairy anyway. I empty one cupboard after another in her sight and she chooses what we get to keep. Some lockers are sealed and we are allowed to keep them but not open them while we are here in Fiji, but most of it is taken away, confiscated. We can keep the alcohol but most of it will be sealed. Oh, that’s no big problem. We won’t be here long and we can do without alcohol. Now the rain is pouring down. A little bit of the feeling we have after having so much food confiscated. Feels really sad. But it is what it is and we have to respect each country’s rules.

The first evening we go to the restaurant at the marina. It is so wonderful to have the food served and to sit at a table and eat instead of having the plate in your lap and trying to eat while the boat rolls and tilts. Now we hope that everything will go smoothly, that the repairs go well and that we can hopefully sail on again in three days.

More of Tonga

The day after our dance, Små Grodorna, we move to a new anchorage. Lisa’s bay. A really beautiful anchorage. Well protected and plenty of space. It will be very windy in the coming days so we want to lie safe without worrying about dragging.

Tongan feast!

Tongan feast! Something most sailors want to experience. We are a large group of sailors from six boats who sign up. First there is a dinghy trip to the beach and then a walk to the nearest village where we are picked up by car. There are already more participants at the restaurant and three men are sitting playing and singing Tongan traditional music. After a while the fantastic food is served, laid out on a long table. It is roast pork, chicken, squid, fish and various salads, noodles and rice. Everything tastes incredibly good and there is plenty of food so we are really full. It is nice to, for once, come to a set table. After the meal there is the kava ceremony. ‘Kava is a traditional Tongan drink that is a deeply rooted part of the culture. It is used in everything from royal ceremonies and weddings to social gatherings and religious rites. The drink, which is made from the roots of a plant in the pepper family (Piper methysticum), has calming effects and symbolizes important Tongan virtues such as respect and community.’ Text taken from Google. It doesn’t taste much, perhaps a bit of forest and we might sense a slightly numb feeling on the tongue and lips. After the kava there is a dance show. We are spoiled by what we have seen in Samoa so this show may not leave such a deep impression. But it still sets the mood for the evening and is beautiful to watch. When it is all over we are satisfied with a very successful and pleasant evening. Now it is time for us to walk almost 1 km in pitch black darkness to our dinghies.

When we are in Lisa’s bay, we are four Swedish boats plus Magic and Scout. There will be several sundowners and nice socializing on different boats several of the days. Even a cinnamon bun on cinnamon bun day aboard the Swedish boat Bengt. It is a calm and protected bay so we don’t notice that it is quite windy outside.

Idag hissas Jan upp i masten.

Today Jan is being hoisted up the mast. Magnus on Lulu and Dan on Magic are helping. A rig check is a good idea before we go out on several long sailings. We won’t have the opportunity for a professional rig check for a very long time either. Dan has to work hard to winch Jan up and he wonders how many beers Jan has had. Everything looks good and Jan can be lowered back down. At the same time, James on the boat Scout is up in their mast.

Sunday and we want to go to church. We have heard that there is an incredible amount of singing and music and we want to experience that. We stay here in Lisa’s Bay and get to take the dinghy to a beach and then walk a quarter of an hour to the nearest village. Once we arrive at the church, there are about 20 minutes left so we wait outside. Finely dressed people of all ages flock to the church. Surprisingly many small children. The girls are wearing princess dresses and the boys traditional ”skirts” and a kind of woven rugs on top. The adults are just as finely dressed. The men all have jackets and ties and the traditional skirt with a kind of apron in a material that looks like a braided basket. The women have dresses and on top they have various pieces of jewelry around their waists and skirts made of the same basket-like material as the men’s aprons. Many people come up to greet us and ask if we should join the service. Even the priest comes up and shakes our hands. The priest is dressed in bright blue with a tie with a cross on it. We see inside the church that all those who are active in the service are wearing the same bright blue color. And what a wonderful service! A choir sings countless songs and music flows out through the speakers. The children run around between the rows of chairs but are mostly calm and not loud in their play. They are used to being in church every week. In front of us sits a little boy with a lot of running in his legs. He is restless and very curious about us. Jan gets big looks all the time and what at first is a little worried fascination turns into smiles.

We are both going up on the hard to make sure the boats are nice underneath. Aura is already there being taken cared of.

It’s a lovely walk

Sedan trycks hon uppåt lite i taget.

Being hauled out here is sometimes something completely different from how it is done in Sweden. Here it is the same kind of maneuver as it was in Vista Mar in Panama. We, who are quite deep-sea, have to come up when there is extra high tide. A cart is driven under the boat and two men dive down and take care of the lines and other things that make the boat a guest of the cart. Then she is pushed up a little at a time. From below. When she is completely up on the cart, the tractor can drive her up, on the cart, onto land. Once up there it will be a day of intensive work. First high-pressure washing and then all the penetrations are cleaned of barnacles, the propeller is polished to a shiny shine, the anode is replaced and our anti-fouling paint, coppercoat, is activated by sanding it. A day later we are back in.

Jan is doing some job in a narrow space

One day we also do a whale safari. The large Humpback whales come to Tonga to rest and give birth for a few months each year. It is Tonga’s largest tourism industry and people from all over the world come here to swim with whales. Everything is done in a controlled manner with a maximum of four people in the water at the same time and the boat that transports them stays a bit away. The whales also seem curious about us humans. We do this trip at the end of the season so many whales have already swam on. The wind is 11-12 m/s and the conditions for swimming/snorkeling are tough. First we follow, from a distance, a lone calf but the guide notices that it will not work. It moves all the time and then it does not work. Then we find a mother whale with a calf. Often, when the whales are here in Tonga, they dive far down into the sea and rest and then come up to get air. It is on those occasions that the opportunity to swim with them is available. The mother with calf also swims all the time and we follow them from a distance. But sometimes they appear right next to us. You see the spray followed by the back and finally the tail fin that disappears into the sea. Suddenly the mother and the baby start jumping out of the water. As if they want to give us a show. Sometimes they are quite close to us but usually a couple of hundred meters away. It is a fantastic experience that we could hardly have dreamed of. The show lasts for over an hour and it feels magical to experience it. Unfortunately, we will not be swimming with the whales but we are still very happy with the experience we have had.

Today is Sunday again and we go to church once again. This time to the big church in the main town here on Vava’u. Birgitta, Kelly and Dan also come along. Tonga stops on Sundays, no one works and most of the very religious population, dress in the finest they have and then decorate their clothes by putting on a traditional ta’ovala. A kind of woven rug that they drape around the waist. This time too the church is almost full and children of all ages participate. The roof is almost lifted by all the singing and music. It is a wonderful event and we feel that we are going to experience part of their rich culture.

Now we are lying at a buoy waiting to check out. It will probably be this afternoon and tomorrow we plan to sail north towards the country of Wallis and Futuna. A small country consisting of three islands with a total of about 12,000 inhabitants. Now we will say goodbye to all our wonderful friends. It is and feels hard. We have become very close to each other. This is the hardest part of sailing. All the goodbyes. Luckily, we have fantastic experiences ahead of us.
