New adventures awaits

Finally! The day has come! After nearly 11 months in Fiji, we are now on our way to pay our final bill and then head to immigration to check out. It feels really strange—and both sad and exciting. Over the past few days, many staff members have stopped us when they saw us, or dropped by our boat, wanting to chat. They’ve heard that we’ve booked our clearance and are sad that we’re leaving them.

The payment goes smoothly, and we head over to immigration. We have an appointment for 10:00 but are hoping they’ll arrive early so we can get going in good time. But we wait and wait. Finally, just before 11:30, they show up. Everything goes smoothly, and we get our papers and passports stamped. Now we’re heading back to Vilja to cast off.

Jan looking at Vuda marina

But first, there is a beautiful farewell. Staff from all over Vuda Marina gather on the dock, hang a flower garland on the boat, and then sing a beautiful song to tell us they will miss us. They even have a banner reading ”Sota Tale – we will miss you.” The singing is incredibly beautiful, and tears stream down our cheeks. What a fantastic conclusion to nearly a year in Fiji and at Vuda Marina. Then comes a lot of waving and well-wishes as we finally set off just after noon.

Vuda is disappering behind us

Earlier that morning, Jan discovered a problem with the solar panels. They weren’t charging the batteries, and without them, we would struggle to maintain our onboard power supply—or rather, it would be impossible, given the high power draw from the full freezer, two fridges, Starlink, and autopilot. Jan went below deck and began testing circuits and clearing space in a frenzy of activity, yet couldn’t find the fault. It had worked yesterday, but not now. Despair set in. What were we to do? Would we have to turn back after just 30 minutes? I suggested he call Bartek—a very friendly Polish man who is an electrical expert and has helped us a great deal. He answered quickly and walked us slowly and systematically through every possible scenario. After more than an hour, Jan and Bartek—working together—found a switch that had been flipped off: a circuit breaker that had likely tripped sometime during the night. What a relief! Now we could continue. We had about seven hours to reach the northern side of Waya Island—which we planned to pass to the north—and then another three-plus hours to clear the reef that extends far out from the entire western coast of Viti Levu, where we had been staying.

Darkness fell an hour or so ago. We have passed Waya and are heading toward the reef opening, where we will change course from northwest to north-northeast. It is a starry night, and the moon illuminates the black sea, making the waves sparkle—as well as the white foam that appears whenever a wave breaks or swirls around Vilja as she ploughs through the water. One star shines brighter, more clearly, and with a slightly more yellow hue than all the others. It lies directly south of us: Sirius—the Dog Star. A star that has historically served as a vital guiding light for Polynesian navigators.

Jan is resting up here in the cockpit while I keep watch. We are being lulled almost to sleep, yet—having not been out sailing for nearly a year—our bodies, and especially our ears, are on high alert for every sound and nuance. It will likely take a few days before we fully settle back into the rhythm of sailing. Even so, I can feel that my body has already begun to adjust to the movements and the rocking of Vilja after just eight hours.

It’s likely going to get a bit chilly overnight. We’ve already noticed this in the harbor—where the wind is barely blowing—that the temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down, and we’ve been wearing long trousers. Now we’re out at sea and the wind is quite brisk; gusts are finding their way into the cockpit and even under the sprayhood, where we usually sit sheltered from the wind. Right now, however, the wind is hitting us on the beam. Unfortunately, it will be blowing straight at us if we tack to head toward Tuvalu. We’ll likely have to steer a slightly more westerly course to account for the wind. The only problem with that is an east-to-west current that will push us sideways even further west; if that happens, we’ll miss Tuvalu and the small atoll containing the capital, Funafuti. Fortunately, the voyage will take around five days, so we’ll have the chance to compensate later on and steer significantly more toward the east.

I’m sitting here in the dark; it’s almost 1:30 AM. A large tanker is approaching from astern, soon to overtake us while following much the same course. I’m thinking about that terrible accident off Tjörn last summer. That’s why I’m calling Anthas on the VHF. I want to make sure they’ve seen us and find out if we can hold our course. We’re sailing relatively close to the wind, so changing course is difficult for us. Plus, Anthas is the one overtaking. I get a quick reply. They have us in sight and say they intend to pass on our port side, so we can maintain our course. A relief. So now I can sit and watch the lights of the large ship as it’s about to pass us.

On the plotter we can see the tanker, Althea. Now she is more on our port side

The sailing is going smoothly. Right now, we’re on a broad reach, with the wind coming from off the quarter, making between six and seven knots. The sun is shining, and there’s a lovely breeze in the cockpit. We have a fishing line out and are hoping for a bite; I’m absolutely dying to eat fish. We didn’t dare buy fish in Fiji due to the risk of ciguatera, a neurological illness found in reef fish and the predatory fish that feed on them. I’m not quite as worried as Jan, but I haven’t felt like cooking separate meals for us. Now we’re out on the open ocean; we’re mainly hoping for tuna, though a mahi-mahi would be perfect, too. The freezer is packed full of lamb and chicken, so if we do get a bite, it’ll be fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! 😄

It is peaceful sitting out here, moving forward on the wind. There is no engine noise, only the sails fluttering slightly, the sea lapping against Vilja, and the sound of the waves. All around us, there is blue, white, and gray: sky, sea, and clouds.

Sailing north

We wake up to a grey, overcast day. The wind is blowing at around 10–12 m/s, and we are really flying along—often reaching speeds of up to eight knots. The sea is quite rough, with large waves making it difficult to move around inside the boat, yet we feel safe. We still have the wind coming in over the quarter—a broad reach—which is probably my favorite point of sail. If we keep up this pace, we’ll arrive as early as tomorrow afternoon, though the wind is expected to die down further north as we approach Tuvalu. Since we need to enter an atoll, we also need to arrive during daylight hours and, ideally, at slack water, the moment when the tide turns from low to high or high to low and the current is at its weakest. Furthermore, we need good visibility inside the atoll to keep a lookout for ”bommies”, coral heads that rise abruptly from deep water to just below or even above the surface. We do have experience with atolls from our time in the Tuamotus (French Polynesia), where we navigated into quite a few of them.

Lycka!!!

Pure joy! About twenty blunt-nosed whales, likely pilot whales, are playing around Vilja! They’ve been here for a long time now, swimming in front of, behind, and on both sides of us, right next to the boat. It’s the first time we’ve had whales playing around the boat like this. Every encounter with dolphins, and now whales, brings such joy; it seems like they have a blast playing around the boat and showing off for us.

Messenger_creation_7F540455-379B-433B-8DFF-6661E773F582
And they were swimming around us for a long time

A bit of excitement in an otherwise rather quiet life, where time drifts by against a backdrop of empty sea and sky. For the past few hours, we’ve had a Chinese fishing fleet off our starboard side. We can see up to seven boats at a time on the radar, but those are just the ones closest to us; there could easily be twice that many. We know they use incredibly long nets and trawls, so we don’t want to get too close and we certainly don’t want to end up with them on our port side as well. We’ve altered our course about 20 degrees to port to ensure we stay clear. Now that darkness has fallen, we can see navigation lights, or more likely, work lights, on one of them; the others are probably further away or unlit. Most of them are small boats, only about eight meters long and three meters wide, considerably smaller than my Kailani. But one of the boats is significantly larger. That’s likely where all the fish is offloaded before being transported to China or another country with which they have an agreement. There were plenty of Chinese fishing boats in the harbor in Samoa.

Here we see some of the fishingboats

My watch, from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM, is a mixed bag. First, the Chinese fishing fleet; then a fierce squall with good wind, speeds reaching up to nine knots, followed by thunderstorms and rain; and finally, just before I’m due to go off watch, the wind dies completely. It was expected, but it makes for an uncomfortable ride. The sea remains rough after all the wind we’ve had, and the boat is rolling heavily from side to side. Moving around inside the cabin is difficult, and pulling down one’s trousers to use the head is nearly impossible. We take down the sails and start the engine; after all, the goal is to arrive on Tuesday morning, and the remaining stretch to Funafuti lies within a belt of calm that looks set to persist for quite some time.

We are in a middle of a squall – easy to see on the radar

Framme i Tuvalu och i Funafuti-atollen. Ca 08.30 idag går vi in genom passet. Ingen ström, inget kokande vatten utan helt lugn o stilla.

We have arrived in Tuvalu and the Funafuti Atoll. We entered through the pass around 8:30 this morning. There was no current and no rough water—everything was completely calm and still. We made our way in and anchored near four other sailboats. We know Screesaver from our time in Fiji, but the others are new to us. We called out several times on the VHF radio without getting a reply. Eventually, they did answer, but there was only static, we couldn’t make out what they were saying. So, we took the dinghy ashore. They knew we were there but wanted to come out to the boat to handle the clearance process. We all headed out to Vilja, filled out some paperwork, and answered a few questions. Now we are officially welcomed into the country with stamped passports, and the Tuvaluan flag is flying. A new country to explore!

Leaving Sweden for Fiji and Vilja

Nu är vi äntligen på väg igen. Efter mycket planerande med all vår packning, 4 väskor denna gång.

We’re finally on our way again. After a lot of planning regarding all our luggage—four bags this time.

On our last night in Sweden, I stay with Eva and Bosse, while Jan stays with his daughter, Petra. Our flight isn’t until the evening, and Petra is driving us there. We squeeze ourselves and all our bags into the car and head for Landvetter. We’ve left plenty of time, so there’s no need to rush. Check-in goes smoothly, and there’s no queue at security. Once in the departure hall, we head to the lounge to enjoy some peace and quiet, a bite to eat, and a glass of wine. Now it really feels like the trip has begun.

Next stop Singapore

The following afternoon, we land in Singapore and take a taxi to Hotel Boss, where we will be staying for three nights. It feels wonderful to be traveling, and it’s exciting to get to explore Singapore for a few days. It has been over 15 years since I was last here, and about forty years since my first visit.

After spending the night, we set out to explore. Google Maps makes it easy to find our way around and locate buses and the subway. Our first stop is the Swedish Embassy. There is an election this year, and we left Sweden before early voting began. The process is quick and easy, and we are pleased to have done our part.

From the embassy, we head to Gardens by the Bay. There are several attractions here; while some require a ticket, there is plenty to see just by walking around. It is like a vast park filled with greenery, water features, and giant artificial trees. In a few years, they will likely be covered in greenery, though not all of them are yet. Everywhere you look, you can see one of Singapore’s landmarks: the Marina Bay Sands hotel. It is an ultra-luxurious hotel with a top section shaped like a boat. The cheapest room costs nearly 11,000 SEK, while a suite runs about 27,000 SEK—and those are nightly rates. You can book a spot to visit the bar, but just getting there costs nearly 400 SEK. And, of course, you’ll want to buy a drink once you’re there.

We buy admission tickets for the two greenhouses. First, the Cloud Forest. It is like a lush oasis here—a tropical jungle. And displayed amidst all the greenery are dinosaurs from the movie Jurassic Park.

In the next park, the Flower Dome, there are sections featuring characteristic vegetation from various parts of the world—Europe, South America, Africa, and so on. It is beautifully done. There is also a lily exhibition—enormous quantities of lilies in every imaginable color and color combination. We spend several hours in these two greenhouses, simply enjoying the experience.

We spend the rest of the day first in Chinatown, with its colorful souvenir shops and countless restaurants, and then at the hotel pool area. We have dinner at Maxwell Food Centre, which features a multitude of restaurants serving cuisines from across Asia; they are lined up much like in a large shopping mall, making it hard to choose. From there, we head to the river at Clarke Quay in the city center, where—once again—there is an abundance of restaurants. We sit down for a drink before heading back to the hotel, happy and satisfied with the day.

Ny dag och nya upptäckter och utflykter. I närheten hotellet ligger området Kampong Glam.

A new day brings new discoveries and excursions. The Kampong Glam district is located near the hotel, known for its large Sultan Mosque, street art, and somewhat bohemian shops and atmosphere. Here, the old low-rise buildings—only two stories high—remain, while skyscrapers stretch high into the sky all around. The contrast is beautiful and fascinating.

It’s a huge difference between old part and modern part of Singapore

Nästa stop blir Little India.

We continue to the city center to see another Singapore landmark: the mythical Merlion statue—a lion’s head with a fish’s body, spouting water from its mouth. From here, there is a fantastic view of the modern Marina Bay Sands hotel in one direction and the historic Fullerton Hotel in the other; it sits there in all its charm, surrounded by skyscrapers. Our next stop is Little India. I love it here! The scents, the colors, the music, the food—everything! A visit to Singapore wouldn’t be complete without Little India. We end the day, too, with a glass of wine by the river in the city center. Now we have to pack our bags again, because tomorrow we fly to Fiji.

Lunch with a beer

I suddenly catch a cold during the flight—a terrible headache and a persistent cough. It comes on incredibly fast, out of nowhere. Because of this, the journey becomes a real struggle for me. Time seems to drag, but eventually, we land—early in the morning, Fiji time. The flight from Singapore to Fiji is almost as long as the one from Sweden to Singapore; it’s not something you’d imagine while sitting at home in Sweden. I am completely exhausted as we wait to clear immigration and then for all our bags to arrive. Finally, we have them, though they have to be scanned before we’re all set. It goes smoothly, except that we have to pay a fee to bring our new Starlink Mini into Fiji.

Oh, it feels so good to arrive at the little cabin we rented at Vuda Marina. We collapse into bed and sleep for a few hours. Now, a lot of work awaits regarding Vilja and our luggage. I’m feeling so unwell that I can’t even bring myself to get out of bed. My head is pounding, I’m coughing, and I feel absolutely awful. And it’s only a couple of days before Jan falls ill too. COVID is widespread in Singapore, so we suspect that’s what we’ve caught.

The next week or two pass in a blur. The flu or COVID refuses to let up. We barely have the energy to do anything with the boat, cook, or take care of ourselves and each other. Sure, we get some things done, mostly through sheer willpower, but progress is slow. We had planned to launch after about four days, but it ends up taking over ten days before Vilja is in the water. And not even half of what we intended to do is finished. The plan was to spend two nights at the dock, but that turns into more than a week.

There is a lot to be done. We have a huge amount of gear to stow in a boat that is already packed full Vilja is currently ”packed down,” so everything needs to be put back in place. There is considerable work to be done below the waterline, and the hull sides need polishing and waxing. On top of that, the bimini, solar panels, and sails need to be installed. There is a lot of electrical work, storage compartments need organizing, the watermaker needs to be run, and so on. The list is long and seems never-ending.

We are slowly recovering and attend ”Bonfire Night” at Vuda Marina one Friday. The marina has built a large pile of twigs and other wood, which is set ablaze, creating a massive bonfire that lights up the twilight. Most people at the marina, both boaters and staff, are there. Beer, wine, and gin drinks are served. The atmosphere is great, and we chat with both new and old acquaintances.

One evening, just before we’re due to leave, there’s a barbecue with a large group of sailors, many of them young South Americans. They’ve brought instruments along and sit playing and singing late into the night. There’s grilling and chatting, and spirits are high. It’s a fantastic evening, though we do feel a bit sluggish and tired the next day.

Aside from work and trying to get healthy, it is wonderful to be back at the marina and see everyone we know. Jan, in particular, has gotten to know the staff well, since he spent much more time at the marina than I did this past spring. They gravitate toward our boat, stop us when we are out and about, tell us how much they will miss us, and ask if we will be coming back.

Båten sjunker nästan av all proviantering.

We have now booked our date for checking out. We are working hard to get everything ready. I’ve made at least eight trips into Lautoka to stock up on supplies; the boat is practically sinking under the weight of all the provisions. Jan has been busy with various boat maintenance tasks. We are heading north toward several countries—some of the most isolated in the world—that are tiny and consist entirely of atolls. Food supplies there are limited, as is fresh water, and finding spare parts for the boat will likely be difficult. There are no harbors, so we will be anchoring in bays and living almost entirely off what we currently have on board  Vilja. Our first destination is Tuvalu, a small country north of Fiji. It is said to be the first country likely to disappear beneath the waves as sea levels rise; its highest point is only about two meters above sea level. The next country on our itinerary is Kiribati—the first (and last) place to celebrate the New Year. It straddles both the equator and the International Date Line, although they have since adjusted the date line in a very clever way. From Kiribati, we plan to sail to the Marshall Islands and then on to the Federated States of Micronesia. We aim to reach Sorong—located in Irian Jaya, the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea—by April. That is our rough plan for the time ahead: seven months in very remote locations across this vast ocean.

A couple of weeks later, my friend Gigi joins me. It has become a tradition for her to come along every summer. We always have a wonderful time, and the conversation never runs dry. And as always, we moor at the outermost edge of the archipelago, watching the sun set into the sea and enjoying the beautiful red granite of Bohuslän glowing in the sunset.

Katarina has visited a few times before, and whenever we meet, it feels as though no time has passed at all, even if it’s been years. We are also situated right out on the edge of the archipelago, enjoying a beautiful sunset and the red granite rocks.

It is also great fun meeting up with fellow sailing friends out in the archipelago and at Källviken Marina. First up is Lars Soold and his crew. As always, it is a delightful time, and we get to enjoy his flute playing. It is not without reason that Lars is known as ”The Fluteman” on Tobago, where he spends a lot of time.

Jan is borrowing a boat from our friend Niklas for a week and is out sailing with his daughter, Petra, and her family. It turns out to be a wonderful week, with stops at both guest marinas and natural anchorages. One stop is at an island in the Vasholmarna archipelago, where I am already moored. It is absolutely delightful, swimming, barbecuing, crab fishing, and playing in the water. Jan’s grandchildren, Esther and Frans, are out on the water with both a dinghy and a SUP board, and the swimming seems endless. Naturally, there is also a crab race when the captured crabs are released back into the water.

And, of course, a sunset

One weekend, we meet up with the sailboat Ayla, a family with children with whom we sailed across the Atlantic over three years ago. They have sailed all the way around the world and returned last year. Now the children are back in Swedish school and happy to be home and seeing friends. We have a wonderful evening, talking a lot about amazing places around the globe.

I haven’t just been out on the boat; I’ve been doing quite a bit of work, too. At my old job, Ingsered. It’s really fun to come back, meet new and old colleagues, and work again. I’ve always really enjoyed it there, and this summer is no exception.

The main reason we are back in Sweden this summer is that Tobias and Sandra are getting married. They are traveling from Eskilstuna to Onsala a couple of weeks beforehand to make wedding preparations. During that time, they’ll come visit me, and we’ll take the boat out and spend a day and a night at Usholmen. We get lucky with the weather and enjoy being together, climbing the rocks, sunbathing, barbecuing, and watching the sunset. The next day, I drive them into Grundsund so they can head back to Onsala and continue with the wedding preparations.

My beloved Tobias and

There is a lot to do in the days leading up to the wedding. The venue needs to be decorated and set up, tables laid, cakes baked and beautifully finished, canapés prepared for the ”Bride’s Toast,” the seating plan finalized, and so on. Sandra’s mother, Carina, and her partner, Lasse, have been working hard on preparations for quite some time, and now they are in the home stretch. Friends of Tobias and Sandra are also pitching in to help. By the morning of Saturday, August 15th, everything is ready.

When everything is ready and there are just a couple of hours left until the ceremony, we head to our Airbnb in Partille to get dressed up, a long gown and a dark blue suit. I searched high and low for a lovely dress and am really happy with it now. Jan has rented a smart dark blue suit, so now we’re all set for the wedding.

And so, we are gathered in Haga Church as the bells ring out. Tobias stands there, nervous and tense, waiting for his bride. The doors open, and first come five of Tobias’s young cousins, all dressed up. Then Carina escorts her daughter, Sandra, forward. She looks incredibly beautiful, and her dress is like a dream. Sandra is handed over to Tobias, and the wedding ceremony begins. It is a truly beautiful ceremony, led by a minister who connects with everyone present. Tobias and Sandra exchange vows and rings. As they turn around, now newlyweds, they look absolutely radiant and happy. It is wonderful! They walk down the aisle, skipping the final few steps. Family and friends file out, and then the happy couple emerges onto the church steps amidst cheers! They share a kiss, and the cheering grows even louder. Now, a wonderful celebration awaits!

The evening is a huge success, with delicious food, laughter, games, a great atmosphere, and wonderful conversations around the dinner table. I am a bit nervous, though. I’m about to give a speech, the first of my life. I’ve been polishing it endlessly and am happy with it now. I know the opening by heart, but I know my nerves will make me forget it. I’ve been given a time slot and am scheduled to speak after Carina, the bride’s mother. The starter has been eaten, and Carina clinks her glass. She delivers a lovely, emotional speech. Now it’s almost my turn. I sit watching the clock, and then the moment arrives. I clink my glass and stand up. I glance at my notes a bit, but I look even more at Tobias and Sandra. And it goes well! I feel pleased afterwards and get big, warm hugs from Tobias and Sandra. Now I can enjoy the rest of the evening. And I do. The whole family is gathered, and I meet several of Tobias’s childhood friends. I cut in during the bridal waltz, as is customary, and take over dancing with Tobias. I also dance with my brother, Leif, and with Tobias’s best man, Dennis. My, how time flies! Suddenly it’s 2:00 AM, and the party is coming to an end. Tired and content, we take a taxi back to the room we rented and fall asleep quickly.

The days have flown by, turning into weeks and months. Now it is time to haul Kailani out of the water, empty her, cover her up, and prepare her for long-term storage ashore. The sails are taken down, the mast is unstepped, and we get to stay on board while she is on land for a few nights as we finish up the final tasks.

Now covered and ready yo be left

It’s Friday, and there are only two days left until we fly back to Vilja in Fiji via Singapore. We’ve been invited to a crayfish party at the home of Petra and her family. Jan’s son Victor and his partner Linda are there too. The table is beautifully set with crayfish, shrimp, and Västerbotten cheese pie. And it is absolutely delicious! Seafood is arguably the best thing there is, and we are thoroughly enjoying it. The grandchildren, Esther and Frans, give it a try and find it a bit exciting, though they prefer eating hamburgers. The evening flies by, and we drive up to Kailani in Källviken for one last night on board before we empty out the last of our things tomorrow, lock up, and drive the car to Niklas’s place. He is very kind and is letting us keep it parked there until we return to Sweden.

Fixing Kailani back in Sweden

We’re back in Sweden! It’s been a long time. We left in September 2024, flying to Cartagena, Colombia, where Vilja was docked at the time. A lot has happened since then. We sailed the Caribbean side of Panama, transited the Panama Canal, and ventured out onto the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific. It is larger than all the Earth’s landmasses combined. Our friends Marie and Niklas joined us, and we sailed, via the Galápagos Islands, all the way to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. The longest open-ocean stretch took 29 days. I think we saw a total of six boats, almost all from a distance, during that month. We spent about six months in French Polynesia; Marie and Niklas left after sailing with us for nearly three months. We continued sailing west and crossed the International Date Line. Samoa, Tonga, and Wallis & Futuna were the next places we visited. From there, the plan was to sail north and then continue west toward Indonesia during the hurricane season. But… that’s not how things turned out. Boat trouble forced us to sail south instead, to Fiji, where we hoped to resolve the issues within a week. That didn’t happen either. Sure, we sailed to Fiji, but we encountered far more problems than we had hoped for. And time was running out to leave Fiji safely; hurricane season is nothing to mess with. Consequently, we had to postpone the rest of our journey by a full year and stay in Fiji for the entire hurricane season. Jan has really enjoyed it, whereas I haven’t. The people are absolutely wonderful, and the country is incredibly beautiful. However, because of the hurricane season, we’ve spent virtually all our time in the marina. It’s hot there, sweltering, with no cooling breeze, nothing to do, and no chance to go swimming. It’s a lifestyle that definitely doesn’t suit me. On the other hand, the few times we were able to leave the marina were fantastic. The islands are beautiful, and the people are so open, friendly, and welcoming. But 90% of the time was spent in the marina. To avoid just killing time, we went to Bali. Jan stayed for two weeks, and I stayed for a month. After that, I spent two months in Thailand.

While Jan stayed in Fiji

But now, after nearly two years, we are in Sweden. Our home here is primarily my boat, Kailani, where I have lived year-round since 2020. The boat dates back to 1977 and is quite basic. This spring, there has been a lot of talk about a toxic substance called TBT, which was used in antifouling paints and primers until 1989. There is talk of a total ban and that boats containing TBT will not be permitted to be launched. We do not know if Kailani has it, but the likelihood is high for a boat of that age. Since we do not know when or for how long we will be in Sweden next, we decide to scrape all the paint below the waterline right down to the bare hull.

It is a job we hope will take about four days. Since the paint is toxic, we aren’t allowed to scrape the hull where the boat is currently docked; instead, we’ve been given space in the workshop at Fantasi Marina, where Kailani is moored, beneath the Skaftö Bridge. We aren’t permitted to sleep on board while in the workshop, so we are staying at Örtorp Hostel, just a five-minute drive away.

We, or rather Jan, start by brushing on paint remover and then scraping. It is stuck fast. The first layer comes off a little with a great deal of effort and manual labor. Getting through all the layers of paint feels impossible. Yet, inch by inch, we make progress. The cans of paint remover are disappearing at an alarming rate. Jan scrapes while I drive to the shops to buy more. When the stock in Uddevalla runs out, I have to drive to Trollhättan. We try products from both Biltema and Seasea; Biltema’s seems to work best. And I say that even though I’m not exactly a Biltema fan. The work is grueling, truly grueling, and it feels almost hopeless. What have we gotten ourselves into? Jan tramps around in the scraped-off paint, which is sticky and clings to his boots and clothes. Eventually, the seat of his trousers becomes like a suit of armor, caked in layers of paint. He soldiers on, wearing a gas mask and battling increasingly painful muscles in both arms.

The work goes forward

Men skälvklart otroligt viktigt.

Slowly but surely, we’re making progress and starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The original four days have now turned into fourteen. The bill from the boatyard keeps mounting. As do the costs for all the other essentials we need for the heavy sanding work. The iron keel is rusty, so it also needs to be sanded down and coated with anti-rust paint. Finally, we’re satisfied with the result. Now it’s time to start applying the light primer. I buy countless cans in different colors so we can see where we’ve painted. Five coats are required, with about 12 hours of drying time between each. But this part of the job feels fun; building things up is much more enjoyable than sanding them down. The preparatory work is both tedious and time-consuming though, of course, incredibly important. After sixteen days, we’re finished, and all that’s left is the antifouling paint. We arrive at the yard at 7 a.m. and start painting. The launch is scheduled for the next day, we can hardly wait! An hour or so after we finish painting, we get word that the launch is happening, right now!

After 16 days she is ready

And so it happens. They bring Kailani out of the workshop and drive her over to the launch site. She is lifted up, and we apply antifouling paint to the spots where the supports had been. And just like that, she’s in the water. No water leaks in, the engine starts smoothly, and Kailani is quickly moved to her home berth at D18.

And finally we are splashed

In addition to all the scraping below the waterline, I’ve washed, polished, and waxed the entire boat. We also had to buy three new house batteries; the old ones lasted ten years, so they certainly performed better than expected. Unfortunately, I also had to get a new starter battery. I bought a new one just two years ago, but it didn’t survive two winters in storage ashore. I’ve realized there really is a difference between Biltema and expensive name-brand batteries. This spring has been extremely expensive. The costs for scraping the hull and repainting it come to over 30,000 kronor, including 16 nights at a hostel, and that’s not even counting the bill from the boatyard yet. On top of that, there were the new batteries, new galley equipment, and a new mattress topper and sheets.

Another issue we’ve struggled with, but still haven’t really tackled, is our storage unit. It’s been overrun by mice; there are droppings and urine everywhere. I’ve had to throw out all the food, including items in cans, glass jars, and plastic packaging. There were even Tetra Paks that they’d chewed right through. Virtually all my shoes have been ruined, and cushions, duvets, mattresses, and other fabric items are either destroyed or covered in mouse droppings and urine. Sorting it all out properly is going to be a massive job. My storage unit is packed floor-to-ceiling: furniture and moving boxes at the back, and everything related to the boat at the front. I sold a house six years ago, so everything I own is in there. Jan sold a house too, but he didn’t keep as much furniture and household gear as I did. Now, I’m buying large plastic bins to store clothes, duvets, pillows, and other fabric items. All food will be kept exclusively in plastic bins as well. We won’t have time to find a cheaper storage unit to switch to this summer; I’m starting work soon and will be working heavily right through to mid-August.

Thailand and Fiji – us two now living two differnt lives

Love being in Thailand and on Koh Lanta. I feel at home and it’s my second home. The food, the smells, the markets, the people, the language…well, everything. I came here to Koh Lanta for the first time in April 2004. Then with my neighbours’ eldest daughter, Marie. It was definitely at the end of the season and at that time there were very few tourists here. The roads were mostly red mud, the resorts were easy to count and so were the restaurants. We were pretty much the only tourists, Marie and I. Lovely long walks alone on Klong Dao beach in the morning and extremely cheap food and massages. Last April the whole island shut down. The resorts that had still been open closed and tarps were put around the grounds. Especially down towards the sea. The same with the few restaurants that existed. We still had about 5 days left before we had to fly home so we went to Koh Phi Phi. There, too, we were pretty much the only visitors. We rented a boat with a driver one day and went around the islands. Bl a to Maya bay where we were completely alone with the monkeys. All of this feels almost surreal now. Koh Lanta has had a season with more tourists than everthe visitors. We rented a boat with a driver one day and went around the islands. Bl a to Maya bay where we were completely alone with the monkeys. All of this feels almost surreal now. Koh Lanta has had a season with more tourists than ever. The previous season was also the season with the most tourists before that. Families with children are everywhere and just a month or so ago you had to book a table to be able to go out for dinner. I don’t feel at home with it at all. I enjoyed myself when there were enough tourists, or rather less tourists. But of course there is another side as well. Today, there are an incredible number of people who make a living from tourism – both Thais and non-Thais. Without tourists, they have nothing to live on. This applies to both those who run a business and all those who are employed. So there are often two sides to the same thing.

Jippie!

Yippee! Song Kran – Thai New Year and the world’s biggest water festival! It falls between 13 – 15 April every year. And now we celebrate the year 2569. Add 543 years from our year 2026 and it will be the Thai year. It is according to a Buddhist solar calendar and based on when the Buddha reached Parinirvana (when he died). Here in Thailand many different New Years are celebrated every year. The Western traditional December 31 to January 1, the Chinese which changes a little from year to year depending on the full moon, the Muslim which also changes a little and then the Thai in April.

Ibland med is i. Man blir blöt – genomblöt. Förutom allt vatten så kletas även färg in i ansiktet.

Songkran is a party. With water. Words cannot describe what it is like. Along the road there are huge numbers of people armed with water pistols and buckles. Most in brightly colored clothes. There are huge pools of water. Sometimes with ice in it. And getting a bucket of ice-cold water over your body feels…ice-cold to say the least….Children and adults, local residents and visitors all play side by side. Cars, song thaew, motorcycles and others drive along the road. They stop in front of each ”station” of water and the war begins. The water war. Wetting down as many as possible and as much as possible is the goal. Those on the road versus those in the car. You get wet – soaking wet. And that in just a few minutes. No one is spared, or well, some are actually spared. Give a sign o drive further away from the pavement and it will be accepted. But motorcycles and tuctucs are sprayed with water. Poor tuctuc drivers just doing their job. In Bangkok, I have also seen videos of how even police officers on duty get splashes of water on them. In addition to all the water, color is also washed into the face.

The tradition is that Water symbolizes purification and renewal, where you wash away unlucky events from the past year to face the new year clean and happy. So most Thais say ”Thank you” when they are completely drenched by buckets of water.

Many Buddhist Thais, those not involved in the water wars, go to temples to pour fragrant water over Buddha statues, which is believed to bring good luck and blessings. Here on Koh Lanta, 90% are Muslim and many are of Chinese origin. They traditionally do not celebrate Songkran, but are still accepting and understanding if they also get a shower with water on this one day of the year.

Many Thais also travel home to their families to celebrate, making it a time for rest and reflection. It is the case that many people live separately for large parts of the year in order to get an income. Many children grow up with their grandparents when their own parents have moved away to support themselves and their children.

Today I am at the market. It moves around to different locations every day here on Koh Lanta. I’m looking for a decent sized tuna, chicken breast, prawns, vegetables and some ready-made cheap food. It is full of life and movement and a lot of colors and smells. Since I cook almost all of my food at home, I go here several times a week to get fresh produce. I clean the tuna properly so that only small fillets remain and I sometimes cook the prawns in the Swedish way with dill and a lot of salt. Here in the heat I need salt because I sweat so much. When I’m not cooking the prawns, it’s Thai-inspired dishes with garlic and fresh coriander.

My lovely friend Berit

Oooohhhh how nice! Had a massage for an hour for the first time in three weeks. Don’t know why it took so long. Probably because I was, and am, extremely tired. I already go to bed around 7 p.m

But today it was a massage. Not such a relaxing massage that you just enjoy and almost fall asleep. I like hard massages and took a sports massage. The first thing they asked was if I’m going to scream…and it’s hard. It is not just hands with fingers or palms that are used, but the entire forearm and elbows. It’s hard not to scream when someone pushes their elbow as hard as they can on their body. But, oh, how good it feels afterwards. Like I said, I like hard massages and will probably try to go there at least a couple of times a week. Maybe I will choose an oil massage sometime to be able to enjoy a little too 😄

While I’m here in Thailand, Jan is still in Fiji and at Vuda Marina. There he works a lot with Vilja. Both inside the boat and with the engine and other things. The alternator has come back from repair and rewound. We have been without it for over a year now, so it is welcome. Stowage compartments are emptied, washed out and sorted, gas bottles are repainted as they otherwise rust, septic tanks are cleaned, etc., etc. The work on a boat that is used every day of the year, and also in strong sun and heat, never ends. The boat must be prepared to be left alone in Fiji when both Jan and I are in Sweden over the summer.

It is extremely hot in Fiji, humid heat, and inside the marina there is hardly any fan at all. Inside the boat, we can turn on our portable ac. When it stands at 17 degrees Celsius, the air ”cools” down to about 34 degrees. And then it feels relatively cool. But working in that heat is almost unbearable. In addition, it is even hotter to work outside. The teak deck gets so hot that you burn your feet if you walk barefoot.

But it’s not just work. Jan has gotten to know many other sailors and they sometimes meet in each other’s boats for a cup of coffee or a cold beer to take a break. In the marina area there is also a bar and restaurant, Boatshed, which is very popular. We go there several times a week and now that Jan is alone in the boat it will probably be even more often. On Thursdays there is a quiz there and it attracts many visitors. The team is usually formed based on which table you sit at or together with some people sitting at the bar. The questions are a happy mix of general education and are both easy and difficult, but it is good to have someone from the USA or Canada in the team as many questions are about that part of the world. Once we won but usually we come 1 or 2 points behind the wins.

Today, Vilja will be lifted up on land. There is a lot of work to be done under and outside the boat. More on that in the next post.

Back in Fiji, and leaving again plus a cyclone

Oj!

Oh! It’s been a long time since I wrote. Will try to summarize the last month. It will probably be a shorter post because not much has happened.

The flight back to Fiji went well. I’m incredibly tired because I never manage to sleep on the plane – no matter how long the journey is. Take a taxi the short way to Jan and Vuda marina. Keeps me awake for a while but goes to bed and sleeps for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

I 35 graders fuktig värme. Många hyr in dykare som skrubbar rent. Det har även vi gjort några gånger.

The days pass and we leave the marina with Vilja to get out into the archipelago again. Being in the Navy is definitely not for me. Hot, you can’t swim and there’s nothing to do except work on maintenance on the boat. In 35 degree humid heat. The first stop will be Mana Island, where we have been before. We are the only sailboat here. Fiji is really empty of sailing boats now during the cyclone season. We are only staying one night and moving on to one of my goals – Vanua Levu Island. Here is a small cruise ship with room for about 40-50 guests. I don’t think there are more than a maximum of 20 on board. A few hours after we arrive, they leave so we will be alone here as well. The anchorage is known for being met by sharks when you get there. They have learned that the sound of propellers and engines means they have a chance of being fed. When we are out with the boat, we often throw food scraps overboard and fish of all possible sizes are happy when they get food. There are usually a lot of fish living under the boat and some of them eat the growth below the waterline. Since the boat is in the water pretty much all the time and the water is also very warm, above all algae grows in the waterline and under the water. A couple of times a week it needs to be scrubbed away by hand. Otherwise it looks very ugly. When we lie still for a long time in a marina, the build-up becomes even bigger and then affects the speed when we sail. Many hire divers to scrub clean. We have also done that a few times.

The anchorage on Vanua Levu is incredibly beautiful. The sea is crystal clear, the sandy beaches on the two islands are chalk white and the sharks swim around Vilja. There is almost no wind, but the boat still rolls a little. Here there is always movement in the water as it is open to the north and west where the wind usually comes from. The evening with the sunset is indescribable! We are enjoying every minute and it is so nice to be out in the archipelago again.

After two nights we leave. It will blow a little more and then we are not in a good position here. The goal is a cove in the far south of Naviti Island. We have also been there before and know that we are well situated there. We get there and anchor in almost exactly the same spot as last time. We mark in an app where we anchor so it is easy to see where we have been. Here we stay for five nights and take it easy and enjoy. It is peaceful and relaxing, although the wind does pick up quite a few times as it makes its way over the high green-clad mountains.

But now it’s time to get back into the marina. I will be leaving Fiji in a few days and there is some work to do before then. It takes us about seven hours to get back and we get, as usual, good help to add. Now that we are in port, we are working at full capacity. Especially Jan. Sails are taken down and folded. They must be submitted to the sailmaker to be reviewed and reinforced where necessary. The dinghy is taken up on land and scrubbed underneath. Every cabinet and drawer inside the boat is emptied and cleaned with, among other things, vinegar, which helps prevent mold growth. We also go through our entire ship’s pharmacy plus private medicines. Make lists where we write down everything we have plus the number and where each thing is kept. This has been done once before by our guest Marie but it was a year ago and we haven’t updated since then. But it’s hot here! In port we have a portable AC. It says 17 degrees, but it’s 34 degrees inside the boat – with the AC on. I don’t even want to think how hot it would have been without it

The days go by and suddenly it’s Sunday. The day I will fly to Thailand via Singapore. It’s been two years since I was in Thailand and Koh Lanta, which is like my second home. Imagine that we lived here every winter for five years. Tobias went to a Swedish school and we had a lot of social interaction.

The journey is long and arduous. The flight leaves at 22.20 in the evening and will take over 11 hours directly to Singapore. Almost as far as from Northern Europe to Bangkok. As usual, I don’t sleep at all and we land around 04.30 in the morning, local time. There is a 4 hour time difference between Fiji and Singapore. There will be many long hours at the airport. I don’t fly on until 3.40pm so that’s 11 hours waiting time. Thinking of going into Singapore but feeling too tired to get anything out of it. The hours pass and the last time I go into a lounge where the chairs are much more comfortable and there is food to eat. Finally, it’s time for boarding and I will fly the short distance to Krabi. Great!

I have booked a taxi that will come and meet me and once I arrive I fall into bed. I will be here for about two months before I fly home to Sweden. Jan is still in Fiji. There is a lot of maintenance work and major work to be done at Vilja. He starts already the day after I leave. The whole boat will be turned upside down. Work that has not been able to be done when there are two of us on board.

New cyclone is heading towards Fiji. Jan is left alone and preparing. The staff at the marina take it seriously. All boats are moved into the inner basin which counts as a hurricane hole. Chains are attached to the stern, fenders are lashed with ropes under the boat, six ropes in a cross from stern to shore, bimini is removed, solar panels are lashed, etc. The rain pours down for a couple of days and the wind picks up. Today, the worst day, winds of over 70 knots (35m/s) are measured inside the inner basin and the rain continues to pour down and large parts of the island of Vitu Levu are flooded and houses blown to pieces. The heart of the typhoon, fortunately, is south of Fiji with winds more than twice as strong. In a couple of hours the worst will be over.

Excursion and some thoughts about Fiji

We have rented a car for two days now that Stu is here. And we hope to see a bit more of Fiji. The goal is to get to the capital, Suva, which is about a five-hour drive from here. That is, if the traffic flows and we don’t stop on the road. First we make some practical stops in the village of Nadi where Jan hopes to find spare parts and a special glue for the boat. Not much is found but we think the filters bought are right anyway.

The drive continues along the southern coast. This is where we went last time we rented a car, so we skip both temples, orchid park and sand dunes that we have already seen. Stu is most interested in a rainforest trek which is near Suva. Lunch is taken at a simple but cozy Indian halal restaurant in the town of Sigatoka, where there is also a large mosque. Here in Fiji, people of many different religions and origins live side by side. After lunch we drive on towards Suva. It’s starting to rain so there won’t be any stops except for a very important coffee stop. Jan complains that I’m bad at coffee, I neither drink coffee nor eat cookies, but now Stu is with us and he wants coffee.

New day on the excursion. We live centrally and walk towards the sea and through a park. In the park is the Fiji museum where Jan and I want to go. Here, much of Fiji’s culture and history is displayed both in the form of archaeological finds, boats, photos, clothes, jewelry, etc. It is very interesting to learn about the country we are in.

Plenty of them, arguing on the spots to sleep

Now it’s time to go to the national park with rainforest, waterfalls and ponds to swim in. You can choose different long trails to walk on, but we choose the shortest one. It is muddy on the ground after all the rain and therefore sometimes a bit slippery to walk on. Although they have made nice paths with gravel and countless resting places. The park is well maintained. After a short walk in the greenery, we arrive at the first pond and a tiny waterfall. Here we stop for a short while before Jan and Stu go on and I, who have a little too nice sandals to walk in the mud with, go back to the car. After about 45 minutes they are back. Unfortunately, Stu has slipped and injured one ankle, but at first he doesn’t say how much he’s in pain.

Now begins the journey back to Vuda Marina and Vilja. Today it is not raining so we make several short stops on the way. It’s the weekend and the locals almost make a pilgrimage to the beaches to swim, relax and play in the water and on the beaches that we pass. Everywhere people walk along the road. It is so wonderful to see how they enjoy life. On the way we also stop at a large supermarket for new provisions.

Jan at the cashier in the supermarket

It is dark and we are tired when we get back around 7.30pm. It’s late to sit down and cook dinner so it’s one last dinner at the Boatshed with Stu. He will be picked up by taxi already at 05.30 tomorrow morning, after about a week here with us. It has been really nice to visit.

We plan to go out on a longer sailing the same day Stu leaves. But it doesn’t turn out the way we imagined. We need someone to look at the problem with the fridge and they can’t come in two days. They state that we have to tear down some walls to access the units, so we wait a bit. The next day, when we want to sail away, it is too windy and from the wrong direction compared to where we had intended. So we are stuck in the marina at least five days longer than we hope.

You might think we live a wonderful life in paradise all the time. How wonderful does it sound to be in Fiji all dark and cold winter? But there are many other sides as well. We live cramped, messy and sweaty in a small boat, many weeks we have also had the boat up on land and ladders to climb up and down with.  Many vital parts on the boat break, which means that plans are crushed – we cannot leave the harbor but must prioritize waiting for parts, mechanics and for it to be repaired.  The fridge, which is extremely important in 30 – 40 degrees celcius, is in trouble so we can’t store vegetables and fruit. It rains and winds a lot because it is cyclone season. Because of all these things, we are therefore stuck in a marina where there is not much to do, etc.

A beutiful flower in the marina can make us feel better

I don’t really like being here. Missing family, mainly my son, and friends I haven’t seen in well over a year. And not being able to go out and discover new places without being stuck in the marina is not my favorite. It eats away at the mood and joy. But…had we not gone down here to Fiji to repair the boat, we would have had big problems out at sea. The charging of the batteries had not worked, likewise the refrigerator, the sails might have been torn up as they need to be repaired and we might even have sunk as we could have taken in water, due to a leak, if things got really bad. So we should be grateful that we are here instead. Everyone in the population is incredibly friendly and polite. The food is significantly cheaper than the rest of the Pacific and here the selection is relatively good. In addition, we avoid blizzards and freezing cold. I am very grateful for that.

It’s interesting about Fiji. Here, several completely different cultures live side by side, but at the same time they have adopted each other’s traditions. The indigenous people, iTaukei, have lived here for a very long time. In the 1800s, the missionaries came and Christianized the population. The British annexed Fiji in the late 19th century and began sugar plantations. To get workers to the plantation, they brought Indians who worked under slave-like conditions. In 1970 the country became independent. The Indians, after being released already earlier, chose to remain in Fiji. So the culture today is a rich mixture of old traditions where family ties are important as well as deep respect for the elderly and for nature. There are also major influences from India with temples and cooking, among other things. In addition to these two, Chinese and European cultures also contribute to a multifaceted identity.

People from India arriving in Fiji ( borrowed photo)

This has led to Fiji today having an indigenous population that speaks its language and attends its schools, as well as an Indian population that speaks Hindi and attends its schools. They live amicably side by side. A waitress told me that she belonged to the only Polynesian family in the village where she grew up so she learned several other languages as a child playing with other children. Otherwise, the common language is English. Everyone speaks good English here in Fiji.

There are also a number of religions here. The largest is Christianity with strong Methodist and Catholic traditions. But here there are also many Muslims and Hindus who celebrate festivals such as Diwali and Eid. In addition to these, there are Chinese and Europeans who contribute to a unique living religious mosaic.

For the two major population groups that are Hindus and Muslims, pork is impure.  The Hindus also do not eat beef as the cow is sacred. While for the Polynesians, whole roast pig is an old tradition to eat. So that’s a big difference. They all eat lamb and chicken, except of course those who are vegetarians.

Everywhere we go and whoever we meet, the greeting phrase is Bula! always present. Bula bula! unites everyone and it expresses joie de vivre, warmth and welcome. Something else that unites everyone is Fiji Time. It’s a relaxed approach to time, where unexpected stops and meetings are common.

Bula!

All in all, we like Fiji, this multifaceted country, but it gets boring being in the port.

Tomorrow we will go into Lautoka and visit the dermatologist and dentist. We last did it in Tahiti last summer but think it’s good to have another check. The next day we hope to get out and sail again.

It goes well with both dentists and dermatologists. Jan also gets to buy himself a pair of sandals and I get to shorten the chain for my beautiful pearl jewelry that I got from Jan in French Polynesia. There will also be a bit of shopping for food and vegetables before we take a taxi back to Vuda marina for quiz night. Every Thursday there is a quiz where the winning team gets a bottle of wine. It usually doesn’t go so well for us as we don’t have English as our first language. Many of the questions can be tricky then. But tonight we come in joint first place, thanks a lot to 4 fellow competitors in our team. There will be a knock-out question, ”What color was Elvis Preskey’s hair before he dyed it black?”, which Chris, on our team, from the United States does and we win! He chooses a bottle of white wine which we share! Lovely feeling! And if anyone is wondering, the answer is blonde.

Happy for winnig first price – a bottle of wine

Finally we leave the marina. A low pressure with strong winds lurks a bit away but we set off. Towards an as yet unknown destination in the Fiji archipelago.

Cyklon-warning

The cyclone warning is now a fact. Far to the west of us, a storm is building up. Most sailboats flee to New Zealand or Australia at this time of year, but due to our problems, we have to find the best alternative here instead. Vuda Marine – where we have space, has a so-called ”Hurricanehole”. A hurricanehole is a well-protected harbor where sailors come to protect themselves and be sheltered from hurricanes or the cyclone. Often it is in mangrove swamps where the roots protect and you can moor like a spider’s web around the mangrove. There can also be protected lagoons that are like small ”pockets” in nature… Vuda Marine has built an artificial ”hurricanehole” which is among the best protected places in Fiji. South of Vuda Marine there is also an area of mangroves where many people flee with their boats when a warning comes.

Now it’s a storm system spreading from the Solomon Islands via Vanuatu and possibly here to Fiji if it builds up properly. There’s no name for the cyclone yet but it’s called ”eight”

Messenger_creation_4E3E521D-469F-452C-ACC3-4A2CCE946444
”Eight” on the way to Fiji

We dock, with the stern inward, about 3 meters from the dock. The staff shows us exactly where we should lie so that the sailboats do not risk hitting each other’s masts. That’s why we lie a little zigzag. At the stern we are attached with crossed lines that are anchored with chains that are attached to large beams that are buried far down in the ground. In addition, we have lines straight behind on both sides of the boat. At the bow we are attached to buoys but we have also removed our anchor so that the chain can be attached to a large buoy with a lot of weight at the bottom in the middle of the basin.

Our place when there is a cyklon-warning

They give us a looooong list of preparations we have to make. 19 pages. Among other things, all the foresails must be taken down. We have two and they are taken down, folded together easily on deck and stowed into the boat in the forecastle. We will have at least three fenders on each side of the boat and they will be attached with ropes under the boat so that they sit together as a pair. We also choose to have a large car deck on each side of the boat. Everything loose must be lashed down properly or stowed away. Our solar panels must also be removed or lashed and the bimini, our sunroof over the cockpit, must also be taken down. There are incredible forces in a cyclone. We are waiting with the bimini and solar panels until we know more whether it will be built up or not. It is a lot of work to both take it down and put it back up again. They downgrade the cyclonewarning on day two but the next day it is upgraded again.

Now we have ”packed” it together

Cyclones are categorized from 1 – 5, with number 5 being really serious. The hurricane in Jamaica early last fall was a category 5 and we have all seen the devastation there. Cyclone, hurricane and typhoon are the same thing but have different names in different parts of the world. It is an intense low pressure that forms over oceans with high water temperatures. The wind speed is from 118 km/h or 32.7 m/s, but it is often significantly stronger.

At the marina, the staff is working hard. Boats in the water must all be turned with the stern inward, moorings and fenders are checked and they check that all boats have followed their list. Boats on land must be secured with strong straps into the ground where the anchors are deeply buried and everything loose must be lashed down or stowed away.

The bad weather ”Eight” is now in Vanuatu. But still no cyklon

We then receive the news that there will be no cyclone but a storm with a lot of rain will move in. Great! We will manage this time anyway. However, the weather is not what you hope for when you are in Fiji. Rain that becomes torrential downpours and strong winds. Flooding on the roads and generally sad. You just have to make the best of it.

After Lucia the rain subsides, fortunately. It is difficult for us to get ashore even without rain as there is a big difference between high and low tide and we are 3-4 meters astern from the jetty. We still have a beautiful place with a tree called Christmastree here. It is a tree with green leaves and absolutely stunning red flowers. The flowers only come around Christmas time so the name is perfect.

Our fridge is broken so we call for help on it before we leave the marina to go out to Muscet Cove again. Lying with Vilja here in the marina is the last thing we want. Screensaver has already gone there. We also go into the nearest town, Lautuka, to stock up and drop off our intercoms which are also broken. The fridge turns out to be empty of gas so they fill it up. Unfortunately they can’t repair the intercom as a board in one of them is broken.

It’s so nice to get out among the islands again. Clean water that we can swim in, the opportunity to grill at a bar and nice company. One day we spend several hours by the pool at a resort. It may seem strange that we want to swim in a pool when we have the whole lovely sea. But changing is satisfying and it feels luxurious. During the day they start the traditional grilling of a whole pig. It looks quite macabre with a rod inserted through the mouth to the back of the pig. It spins around this rod with glowing logs around it. In total, it will take about five hours before it is finished.

Finally in water, starting to discover Fiji

I högsäsong ligger nog hundratals båtar ankrade här.

Finally we leave the harbor! A little nervous to see if everything works and no water leaks in. We steer, in a straight headwind, towards the extremely popular bay Muscet Cove. In high season, there are probably hundreds of boats anchored here. There are several resorts, bars, garbage sorting and even diesel and water to buy. No wonder many people get stuck here instead of paying dearly inside a harbor. The wind should be weak and we feel satisfied. It will be a reasonable distance to test the boat. But, after 2 hours it blows up. We get 12 – 15 m/s straight at us and also a strong current. It feels like we are not moving forward at all. Jan accelerates and a terrible sound is heard somewhere – propeller or engine. We look at each other and at the same time think that we should probably not go to the outer large bay but look for the inner one that is leeward. The wind does it there too because there is no island to protect us but only a coral reef and a low beach. It feels wonderful to anchor after about 1 month in port and mostly on land. We are enjoying being out but hope the wind dies down tomorrow so we can continue to Muscet Cove and stay there for a few nights

The night is calm and so is the morning. We drop anchor and go around the approximately 1.5 hour long route around the island of Malolo Lailai. We usually use an app called Navionics and it has been extremely accurate. But, here it doesn’t do that at all. Jan stands in front in the bow and directs while I steer. We have intercom which makes it very easy. The bay, which normally has hundreds of boats in high season, is almost empty. About six anchored boats plus four on buoys.

We stay here for a couple of nights before we want to move on. We read about a bay where sharks come and meet boats when they hear the sound of the propeller, they are used to being fed by sailors. We head there in the hope of seeing sharks, but the wind blows straight into the bay so it is impossible to anchor. Instead we go to a well-protected bay on the island of Waya. Here the mountains are dramatic and the nature strikingly green. The clouds lie heavy over the mountain peaks and on the beach they have lit a fire so the smoke rises towards the sky. We get the feeling of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. It is already afternoon so we think we will go into the village tomorrow instead.

New day and we had planned to go in but it is going to get windy so we have to go back to Vuda marina where we have space. This is the risk we have to live with all the time now that we are in Fiji during cyclone season. We have to stay, absolutely at the longest, a day away from the marina.

The marina has two basins and as long as there is no cyclone warning we stay in the outer basin. There are a few more boats there with other sailors, like us, who want to go out and sail at regular intervals. A couple of others stay in port all the time. We call out to the marina on VHF when we are outside and then get help to dock. Here we back into the jetty and the front mooring lines are tied to buoys a bit out from the boat. Impossible for us to manage on our own but they are very helpful here. The staff has even learned our names and greet us ”Bula bula”, which means hello hello in Swedish as soon as we meet.

After a few days in port we want to go out again. Now we have gotten to know Allan and Yanina on the boat ”Screensaver” who are doing the same as us and we leave at the same time with the goal of Mana Island. There is a resort here where sailors are welcome. It is already afternoon and we meet Yanina and Allan for a sundowner on Vilja. The next morning and we want to go to the resort. There we are told that it is closed to outside guests as a large group of young Australians have rented the entire resort. Too bad because it would have been nice to have extra luxury at a resort and a large pool.

The next morning, Jan and Yanina go on an excursion to snorkel among large sharks. They return very satisfied after a couple of hours. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the sharks. We have decided to go to the island of Yanuya. Here we hope to attend a Sevu Sevu, a kava ceremony. It is a cultural tradition in Fiji that we bring kava, which is a kind of dried root, as a gift to the village chief to ask for permission to come to the village. They then prepare it and drink it with us and we are welcomed.

One world for this – beautiful

Yanina accompanies us in our dinghy to the beach. There we are met by a lot of children who help us in, pull the dinghy up onto land and tie it up. Unfortunately, we find out that the village chief is not there and some confusion arises. A woman comes to meet us and asks the children to take us to the village chief’s younger brother. We walk through the charming little village with small houses and outdoor kitchens until we reach the other side of the village. There are three men sitting there, one of whom is the one we are looking for. He gratefully accepts our gift – the kava and they chant and clap a kind of song for the kava. We then expect it to be prepared but unfortunately they don’t, so there will be no drinking of kava for us. We then go back to the dinghy and go out to the boat again.

There are two smaller islands here and one of them, the uninhabited island of Monuriki, is the island where Tom Hanks was stranded in the iconic film Castaway, from 2000. We take the dinghy to the second island first but when we are about to go ashore a wave washes over the dinghy so everything, including phones, gets soaked. To save the phone from salt and water we therefore have to get back to the boat instead of walking around the beach on Monuriki and soaking up the scenes from the filming. But first we take a walk on the island we have arrived at.

Our plan is to continue visiting islands but a cyclone warning comes in. Fiji is in the path of the cyclone that is building up around the Solomon Islands to the west so we have to urgently get back to Vuda marina and prepare ourselves and the boat.

The day after our dance, Små Grodorna, we move to a new anchorage. Lisa’s bay. A really beautiful anchorage. Well protected and plenty of space. It will be very windy in the coming days so we want to lie safe without worrying about dragging.

Tongan feast!

Tongan feast! Something most sailors want to experience. We are a large group of sailors from six boats who sign up. First there is a dinghy trip to the beach and then a walk to the nearest village where we are picked up by car. There are already more participants at the restaurant and three men are sitting playing and singing Tongan traditional music. After a while the fantastic food is served, laid out on a long table. It is roast pork, chicken, squid, fish and various salads, noodles and rice. Everything tastes incredibly good and there is plenty of food so we are really full. It is nice to, for once, come to a set table. After the meal there is the kava ceremony. ‘Kava is a traditional Tongan drink that is a deeply rooted part of the culture. It is used in everything from royal ceremonies and weddings to social gatherings and religious rites. The drink, which is made from the roots of a plant in the pepper family (Piper methysticum), has calming effects and symbolizes important Tongan virtues such as respect and community.’ Text taken from Google. It doesn’t taste much, perhaps a bit of forest and we might sense a slightly numb feeling on the tongue and lips. After the kava there is a dance show. We are spoiled by what we have seen in Samoa so this show may not leave such a deep impression. But it still sets the mood for the evening and is beautiful to watch. When it is all over we are satisfied with a very successful and pleasant evening. Now it is time for us to walk almost 1 km in pitch black darkness to our dinghies.

When we are in Lisa’s bay, we are four Swedish boats plus Magic and Scout. There will be several sundowners and nice socializing on different boats several of the days. Even a cinnamon bun on cinnamon bun day aboard the Swedish boat Bengt. It is a calm and protected bay so we don’t notice that it is quite windy outside.

Idag hissas Jan upp i masten.

Today Jan is being hoisted up the mast. Magnus on Lulu and Dan on Magic are helping. A rig check is a good idea before we go out on several long sailings. We won’t have the opportunity for a professional rig check for a very long time either. Dan has to work hard to winch Jan up and he wonders how many beers Jan has had. Everything looks good and Jan can be lowered back down. At the same time, James on the boat Scout is up in their mast.

Sunday and we want to go to church. We have heard that there is an incredible amount of singing and music and we want to experience that. We stay here in Lisa’s Bay and get to take the dinghy to a beach and then walk a quarter of an hour to the nearest village. Once we arrive at the church, there are about 20 minutes left so we wait outside. Finely dressed people of all ages flock to the church. Surprisingly many small children. The girls are wearing princess dresses and the boys traditional ”skirts” and a kind of woven rugs on top. The adults are just as finely dressed. The men all have jackets and ties and the traditional skirt with a kind of apron in a material that looks like a braided basket. The women have dresses and on top they have various pieces of jewelry around their waists and skirts made of the same basket-like material as the men’s aprons. Many people come up to greet us and ask if we should join the service. Even the priest comes up and shakes our hands. The priest is dressed in bright blue with a tie with a cross on it. We see inside the church that all those who are active in the service are wearing the same bright blue color. And what a wonderful service! A choir sings countless songs and music flows out through the speakers. The children run around between the rows of chairs but are mostly calm and not loud in their play. They are used to being in church every week. In front of us sits a little boy with a lot of running in his legs. He is restless and very curious about us. Jan gets big looks all the time and what at first is a little worried fascination turns into smiles.

We have heard a lot about these bulls and quickly turn around and go back again. Lulu, Angelina and Scout leave for further sailing while Magic and I go back into the village of Neifa. We are both going up on the hard to make sure the boats are nice underneath. Aura is already there being taken cared of.

Sedan trycks hon uppåt lite i taget.

Being hauled out here is sometimes something completely different from how it is done in Sweden. Here it is the same kind of maneuver as it was in Vista Mar in Panama. We, who are quite deep-sea, have to come up when there is extra high tide. A cart is driven under the boat and two men dive down and take care of the lines and other things that make the boat a guest of the cart. Then she is pushed up a little at a time. From below. When she is completely up on the cart, the tractor can drive her up, on the cart, onto land. Once up there it will be a day of intensive work. First high-pressure washing and then all the penetrations are cleaned of barnacles, the propeller is polished to a shiny shine, the anode is replaced and our anti-fouling paint, coppercoat, is activated by sanding it. A day later we are back in.

Jan is doing some job in a narrow space

One day we also do a whale safari. The large Humpback whales come to Tonga to rest and give birth for a few months each year. It is Tonga’s largest tourism industry and people from all over the world come here to swim with whales. Everything is done in a controlled manner with a maximum of four people in the water at the same time and the boat that transports them stays a bit away. The whales also seem curious about us humans. We do this trip at the end of the season so many whales have already swam on. The wind is 11-12 m/s and the conditions for swimming/snorkeling are tough. First we follow, from a distance, a lone calf but the guide notices that it will not work. It moves all the time and then it does not work. Then we find a mother whale with a calf. Often, when the whales are here in Tonga, they dive far down into the sea and rest and then come up to get air. It is on those occasions that the opportunity to swim with them is available. The mother with calf also swims all the time and we follow them from a distance. But sometimes they appear right next to us. You see the spray followed by the back and finally the tail fin that disappears into the sea. Suddenly the mother and the baby start jumping out of the water. As if they want to give us a show. Sometimes they are quite close to us but usually a couple of hundred meters away. It is a fantastic experience that we could hardly have dreamed of. The show lasts for over an hour and it feels magical to experience it. Unfortunately, we will not be swimming with the whales but we are still very happy with the experience we have had.

Today is Sunday again and we go to church once again. This time to the big church in the main town here on Vava’u. Birgitta, Kelly and Dan also come along. Tonga stops on Sundays, no one works and most of the very religious population, dress in the finest they have and then decorate their clothes by putting on a traditional ta’ovala. A kind of woven rug that they drape around the waist. This time too the church is almost full and children of all ages participate. The roof is almost lifted by all the singing and music. It is a wonderful event and we feel that we are going to experience part of their rich culture.

It’s a Catholic church and Mary is important

Now we are lying at a buoy waiting to check out. It will probably be this afternoon and tomorrow we plan to sail north towards the country of Wallis and Futuna. A small country consisting of three islands with a total of about 12,000 inhabitants. Now we will say goodbye to all our wonderful friends. It is and feels hard. We have become very close to each other. This is the hardest part of sailing. All the goodbyes. Luckily, we have fantastic experiences ahead of us.
