Tuvalu

It feels incredibly exciting to have finally arrived in Tuvalu—this tiny nation located so far off the beaten path. Its total area is only 26,000 km², comprising nine very low-lying atolls with coral reefs. The highest point is approximately 4.5 meters above sea level, but most of the islands lie below 2 meters; consequently, the entire country risks being submerged by seawater in the not-too-distant future due to rising sea levels. To protect themselves, they are currently constructing a sea wall using multiple layers of massive sandbags.

As we understand it, the plan is to build a plateau that is higher than the current highest point in the town of Funafuti. They are laying out enormous sandbags as protection against high tides, storms, erosion, and rising sea levels, and then filling in the area behind them. New structures are to be built there. The sand is being sourced from within the lagoon, and the intention is to protect the land for about another hundred years. Only the village of Funafuti is being saved; all other atolls will be submerged by the sea before long. Global warming is hitting low-lying countries like Tuvalu hard.

We’ve had a good night’s sleep and are now taking the dinghy into town. We want to find out if we need to pay any fees for sailing around the atoll, and, of course, take a look around. Everyone here speaks good English, even though it’s their second language, despite the fact that tourism is virtually non-existent.

It’s hot walking around—much hotter than in Fiji, and the humidity is high. We’re close to the equator now, which really drives the humidity up. Tuvalu is one of the hottest countries in the world when you factor in the constant humidity; only Singapore and Malaysia are hotter. The village consists of two parallel roads, with a few small shops, a church, and some government buildings, such as meeting halls. As I understand it, each atoll has its own meeting hall here in Funafuti. The private homes are simple and low-slung; there isn’t a single building in the entire capital that’s more than two stories high. Suddenly, a downpour hits, and we take shelter under a large roof. The rain is absolutely pouring down. Just as abruptly as it began, it stops, and the sun comes out again. We head back to the dinghy and make our way home, though first, we stop by Screensaver for a while to chat with Yanina and Allan.

Today, we are accompanying Yanina to an event on the island. The small atoll of Nui is holding a ceremony to celebrate the completion of a two-year project: the construction of large cisterns for collecting rainwater. The cisterns are actually located on Funafuti, not Nui. When we arrive, the venue is beautifully decorated, with purple and white balloons adorning the inside of a party tent. Purple is the island’s signature color, and almost everyone is dressed up in purple and white, or purple combined with other colors. First, there are several speeches, most of which we don’t quite follow. Followed by traditional dancing. It’s great fun! The performance concludes with the dancers placing floral garlands on the heads of all the invited guests. Afterward, there are more speeches and more dancing. Finally, a young woman, who recently won the ”Miss Nui” beauty pageant, takes the stage. As she dances, people approach and tuck money into her clothing, specifically on her back. Throughout the dance, several people walk around with perfume bottles, spraying both the dancers and the audience. It’s a Tuvaluan tradition, and before long, the dancers, and even us, are completely drenched in perfume.

After speeches and dancing, a fantastic lunch is served, featuring an abundance of traditional food. The highlight is a whole roasted pig, prepared in an oven that resembles a pizza oven. The food is incredibly delicious, and I go back for a second helping. Throughout the lunch, there is music and dancing for entertainment. It’s such a joy to be part of this! We are thoroughly pleased with the day and head back to Vilja, full and content.

In the evening, we gather on Screensaver. There are four boats here in total, all heading north toward Kiribati and the Marshall Islands. When we arrived, there was another boat, but it has since left for Fiji. Only 15 to 20 sailboats visit here in a year, so having five of us here at the same time is highly unusual. We spend a few hours together before heading back to our respective boats in our dinghies. The dinghy is arguably one of the most important things we have, since we are usually anchored out; without it, we wouldn’t be able to go anywhere.

We have arrived in paradise! Today, we crossed the atoll’s lagoon to reach a small coral island in its northwestern section. The sea is crystal clear, the sand is white, and palm trees adorn the tiny island. Off come our clothes, and we dive into the warm, inviting water for a long swim. Oh, how we are enjoying this! This is exactly what we have been longing for and looking forward to atoll life at its absolute best. Throughout the afternoon and evening, we sit on the coral sand at the water’s edge, light a fire, go for swims, stroll along the beach, and simply soak it all in, together with Yanina and Alan. Life can be truly wonderful! We stay for two nights, enjoying the second day just as much as the first; it concludes with a barbecue over an open fire on the beach, with a beautiful full moon shining in the sky while the sunset paints the clouds in shades of orange and fiery red. It is now 5:30 AM on the second morning. The wind has shifted, and the sea has become quite choppy. We decide to leave right away and head back to Funafuti, where we will be sheltered from the easterly winds.

A new bonfire with bbq on it

When we arrived in Tuvalu from Fiji, Jan discovered a new problem with the boat. He has been in touch with a mechanic and a shipyard in Kiribati, and it looks like we might be able to get help there. He has also spoken with two different parties in Sweden. Spare parts have been ordered from Sweden, and Jan’s son will be sending them to Tarawa. The original plan was to stay in Tuvalu for about a month and also sail to several other atolls. That’s no longer possible, which I’m very sad about. However, we have decided to stay through Independence Day, which is just a couple of days away. More on that in the next post.
