Fixing Kailani back in Sweden

We’re back in Sweden! It’s been a long time. We left in September 2024, flying to Cartagena, Colombia, where Vilja was docked at the time. A lot has happened since then. We sailed the Caribbean side of Panama, transited the Panama Canal, and ventured out onto the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific. It is larger than all the Earth’s landmasses combined. Our friends Marie and Niklas joined us, and we sailed, via the Galápagos Islands, all the way to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. The longest open-ocean stretch took 29 days. I think we saw a total of six boats, almost all from a distance, during that month. We spent about six months in French Polynesia; Marie and Niklas left after sailing with us for nearly three months. We continued sailing west and crossed the International Date Line. Samoa, Tonga, and Wallis & Futuna were the next places we visited. From there, the plan was to sail north and then continue west toward Indonesia during the hurricane season. But… that’s not how things turned out. Boat trouble forced us to sail south instead, to Fiji, where we hoped to resolve the issues within a week. That didn’t happen either. Sure, we sailed to Fiji, but we encountered far more problems than we had hoped for. And time was running out to leave Fiji safely; hurricane season is nothing to mess with. Consequently, we had to postpone the rest of our journey by a full year and stay in Fiji for the entire hurricane season. Jan has really enjoyed it, whereas I haven’t. The people are absolutely wonderful, and the country is incredibly beautiful. However, because of the hurricane season, we’ve spent virtually all our time in the marina. It’s hot there, sweltering, with no cooling breeze, nothing to do, and no chance to go swimming. It’s a lifestyle that definitely doesn’t suit me. On the other hand, the few times we were able to leave the marina were fantastic. The islands are beautiful, and the people are so open, friendly, and welcoming. But 90% of the time was spent in the marina. To avoid just killing time, we went to Bali. Jan stayed for two weeks, and I stayed for a month. After that, I spent two months in Thailand.

While Jan stayed in Fiji

But now, after nearly two years, we are in Sweden. Our home here is primarily my boat, Kailani, where I have lived year-round since 2020. The boat dates back to 1977 and is quite basic. This spring, there has been a lot of talk about a toxic substance called TBT, which was used in antifouling paints and primers until 1989. There is talk of a total ban and that boats containing TBT will not be permitted to be launched. We do not know if Kailani has it, but the likelihood is high for a boat of that age. Since we do not know when or for how long we will be in Sweden next, we decide to scrape all the paint below the waterline right down to the bare hull.

It is a job we hope will take about four days. Since the paint is toxic, we aren’t allowed to scrape the hull where the boat is currently docked; instead, we’ve been given space in the workshop at Fantasi Marina, where Kailani is moored, beneath the Skaftö Bridge. We aren’t permitted to sleep on board while in the workshop, so we are staying at Örtorp Hostel, just a five-minute drive away.

We, or rather Jan, start by brushing on paint remover and then scraping. It is stuck fast. The first layer comes off a little with a great deal of effort and manual labor. Getting through all the layers of paint feels impossible. Yet, inch by inch, we make progress. The cans of paint remover are disappearing at an alarming rate. Jan scrapes while I drive to the shops to buy more. When the stock in Uddevalla runs out, I have to drive to Trollhättan. We try products from both Biltema and Seasea; Biltema’s seems to work best. And I say that even though I’m not exactly a Biltema fan. The work is grueling, truly grueling, and it feels almost hopeless. What have we gotten ourselves into? Jan tramps around in the scraped-off paint, which is sticky and clings to his boots and clothes. Eventually, the seat of his trousers becomes like a suit of armor, caked in layers of paint. He soldiers on, wearing a gas mask and battling increasingly painful muscles in both arms.

The work goes forward

Men skälvklart otroligt viktigt.

Slowly but surely, we’re making progress and starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The original four days have now turned into fourteen. The bill from the boatyard keeps mounting. As do the costs for all the other essentials we need for the heavy sanding work. The iron keel is rusty, so it also needs to be sanded down and coated with anti-rust paint. Finally, we’re satisfied with the result. Now it’s time to start applying the light primer. I buy countless cans in different colors so we can see where we’ve painted. Five coats are required, with about 12 hours of drying time between each. But this part of the job feels fun; building things up is much more enjoyable than sanding them down. The preparatory work is both tedious and time-consuming though, of course, incredibly important. After sixteen days, we’re finished, and all that’s left is the antifouling paint. We arrive at the yard at 7 a.m. and start painting. The launch is scheduled for the next day, we can hardly wait! An hour or so after we finish painting, we get word that the launch is happening, right now!

After 16 days she is ready

And so it happens. They bring Kailani out of the workshop and drive her over to the launch site. She is lifted up, and we apply antifouling paint to the spots where the supports had been. And just like that, she’s in the water. No water leaks in, the engine starts smoothly, and Kailani is quickly moved to her home berth at D18.

Just a little more
Messenger_creation_7D4CB01B-E204-4CAE-BDA3-71A656EB0548
And finally we are splashed

In addition to all the scraping below the waterline, I’ve washed, polished, and waxed the entire boat. We also had to buy three new house batteries; the old ones lasted ten years, so they certainly performed better than expected. Unfortunately, I also had to get a new starter battery. I bought a new one just two years ago, but it didn’t survive two winters in storage ashore. I’ve realized there really is a difference between Biltema and expensive name-brand batteries. This spring has been extremely expensive. The costs for scraping the hull and repainting it come to over 30,000 kronor, including 16 nights at a hostel, and that’s not even counting the bill from the boatyard yet. On top of that, there were the new batteries, new galley equipment, and a new mattress topper and sheets.

Another issue we’ve struggled with, but still haven’t really tackled, is our storage unit. It’s been overrun by mice; there are droppings and urine everywhere. I’ve had to throw out all the food, including items in cans, glass jars, and plastic packaging. There were even Tetra Paks that they’d chewed right through. Virtually all my shoes have been ruined, and cushions, duvets, mattresses, and other fabric items are either destroyed or covered in mouse droppings and urine. Sorting it all out properly is going to be a massive job. My storage unit is packed floor-to-ceiling: furniture and moving boxes at the back, and everything related to the boat at the front. I sold a house six years ago, so everything I own is in there. Jan sold a house too, but he didn’t keep as much furniture and household gear as I did. Now, I’m buying large plastic bins to store clothes, duvets, pillows, and other fabric items. All food will be kept exclusively in plastic bins as well. We won’t have time to find a cheaper storage unit to switch to this summer; I’m starting work soon and will be working heavily right through to mid-August.

But now, a wonderful summer awaits in Sweden, along with its highlight—Tobias and Sandra’s wedding!

Last beautiful Islands. And prepairing for a month out on open sea

First day on Floreana and we take a water taxi into the small village. The island looks completely different from the previous ones we have been to. No cactuses but rolling high green hills. Everywhere there is black lava. Here the volcanoes are no longer active, as on Isabella, but the craters where greenery has grown up, are good for birdlife and their nesting. We are met by the agent who brings our zarpe, paper that the boat is allowed to leave the island/country. We start talking to a tour guide who is about to go on an excursion and we quickly decide to go along.

We have arrived at Floreana Island

We travel together with the family from the boat Spirit, in an open bus. Window seat for everyone! It’s a steep hill up and the bus can’t really handle it. So the driver stops the engine several times. In any case, we finally get up and start our walk. First to an area where Floreana’s 19 turtles reside. Floreana really longs for the turtles who are now babies at the rescue center in Santa Cruz, which we visited before. The stock needs to be expanded for the species to persist.

The walk continues through fascinating nature with caves, narrow passages like in Ronja Rövardotter and fantastic views of greenery and sea. For centuries, pirates used Floreana as a hideout, whalers stocked up on food here, and they even created their own post office. The first family to settle in the Galapagos Islands settled here on Floreana. They came from Germany in the 1930s and then lived in the caves on the island. The daughter, who was born in the cave, is still alive and is one of about 150 inhabitants.  Today she owns both cruise ships, hotels and a farm. Her father carved a face in a rock right by the caves. Fascinating that this was only barely 100 years ago.

And the local Floreana iguanas is red

When we get back to the parking lot, we have to wait a long time for the car. When he finally arrives, we go to a farm. Floreana is largely self-sufficient in vegetables and it is one of two islands with access to fresh water. On this farm, pineapples, bananas and cassava are grown, among other things. We get half a banana log and about 15 kilos of cassava before the journey goes back to the coastline where we are transported to a beautiful sandy beach that is sandwiched between the lava formations. Here there will be a moment of snorkeling in the crystal clear water before we walk back to the harbor. On the way we stop at a bar for a drink break and we write cards home which are posted in the mailbox. It will be fun to see if the cards find their way home, even if they are posted without a stamp. Which should not be needed.

It is so fascinating to sit here in the boat and watch all the sea lions and turtles swimming around and under Vilja. The sea lions, who are quite clumsy on land, swim so incredibly gracefully and smoothly through the sea and the waves. They are clearly in their element as they plow through the water swinging their hind feet which are probably the model for the flippers we buy and use when we snorkel. They swim up to Vilja as if to greet us and ask what we are doing here.

They really look like our flippers

The sea turtles in turn swim around, dive down for food and then stick their cute heads up and look around curiously. Here at Floreana there are plenty of them and they are big. Sometimes several of them swim together. Although turtles are loners and need neither a partner nor friends. They can be down under the water for an absolute maximum of an hour, but usually they are down for only a few minutes. They can live without food and water for up to eight months. Hence, there were many sailors who long ago took turtles with them on their long voyages, as provisions. Tragic. But what a blessing it is to experience the diversity of this incredible and rich animal life in its proper environment!

Even here in our bubble of happiness, things happen that we wanted to avoid. Today our generator went out. We depend on it to keep the freezer, watermaker and Starlink for Wifi running. Sure, we have solar cells, but the above three things draw a lot of power and are a luxury we would rather not be without. Let’s hope there is some knowledgeable staff on Santa Cruz Island who can help us when we get there. But first we have a night sailing to our last island, San Christobal, especially us tonight.

Didn’t think there would be any night shifts in the Galapagos, but now I’m sitting here in the dark philosophizing. Can’t see the moon or stars, but it’s quite common this early evening session. We are experimenting with a lot of new food now. We got about 15 kilos of cassava yesterday and Marie cooked a pot of cassava and leftovers. Today it was cauliflower teriyaki for dinner. New flavors and new experiences. Here in the Galapagos, what we can buy is limited, so we save the meat we have for our soon-to-come long-distance sailing.

Samma sak gör taxibåten – men i annan takt.

Arrived at San Christobal and there are many sailboats here. The ”sailing boat competition” ARC around the world is here and there are many really big and luxurious boats. We got here early this morning and are quite far out from the pier. Sea lions and sea turtles swim around us, here too. We are just as fascinated and happy all the time as we get to experience the wildlife. Taking the water taxi in and out of town here was an experience mixed ith horror. It’s blowing right into the anchorage and Vilja is rocking hard. The taxi boat does the same – but at a different pace. Marie was about to fall into the water, stuck between Vilja and the taxi boat, but luckily it went well.

Vi stannade bara 1 dag här pga generatorn. Men njöt för fullt av alla sjölejon

We only spent 1 day here because of the generator, but enjoyed the sealions a lot

Two men plus Jan and Niklas, toil like animals to get the generator loose and then up here at Santa Cruz. Where we sailed back after just one day at San Christobal. The space is tight and the screws are tight and have rusted. After almost four hours of struggle, it finally loosens and with joint efforts it is hoisted out of the hold and then down into a taxi boat. Now we have to hope that they can repair it so that we can sail on.

The next project is to fill diesel. We order 80 gallons (about 151 liters) and they come out with a small boat and fill up our tank from cans. In the Galapagos Islands there is no jetty or harbor to dock at so everything is done from boats.

Now we are getting tired of waiting and just walking around in uncertainty. The work on the generator is going insanely slow and they don’t even seem to have located the fault we (read Niklas) believe. We have been and pushed them several times and in between we have stocked up and washed clothes. Now we have decided that they can reinstall the generator tomorrow and we have ordered departure for Sunday morning. So now it remains to be seen if everything works. Unfortunately, we have no hope that the generator will work, but we will probably have to do without.

Departure from Galapagos is booked! Tomorrow, Sunday 15.00 we check out and start our sailing towards the Marquesas. Almost 4000 nautical miles must be covered and it will take around 30 days. Everything depends on wind and weather. It will be very exciting to do the longest sailing of our lives without seeing land!
