Fixing Kailani back in Sweden

We’re back in Sweden! It’s been a long time. We left in September 2024, flying to Cartagena, Colombia, where Vilja was docked at the time. A lot has happened since then. We sailed the Caribbean side of Panama, transited the Panama Canal, and ventured out onto the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific. It is larger than all the Earth’s landmasses combined. Our friends Marie and Niklas joined us, and we sailed, via the Galápagos Islands, all the way to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. The longest open-ocean stretch took 29 days. I think we saw a total of six boats, almost all from a distance, during that month. We spent about six months in French Polynesia; Marie and Niklas left after sailing with us for nearly three months. We continued sailing west and crossed the International Date Line. Samoa, Tonga, and Wallis & Futuna were the next places we visited. From there, the plan was to sail north and then continue west toward Indonesia during the hurricane season. But… that’s not how things turned out. Boat trouble forced us to sail south instead, to Fiji, where we hoped to resolve the issues within a week. That didn’t happen either. Sure, we sailed to Fiji, but we encountered far more problems than we had hoped for. And time was running out to leave Fiji safely; hurricane season is nothing to mess with. Consequently, we had to postpone the rest of our journey by a full year and stay in Fiji for the entire hurricane season. Jan has really enjoyed it, whereas I haven’t. The people are absolutely wonderful, and the country is incredibly beautiful. However, because of the hurricane season, we’ve spent virtually all our time in the marina. It’s hot there, sweltering, with no cooling breeze, nothing to do, and no chance to go swimming. It’s a lifestyle that definitely doesn’t suit me. On the other hand, the few times we were able to leave the marina were fantastic. The islands are beautiful, and the people are so open, friendly, and welcoming. But 90% of the time was spent in the marina. To avoid just killing time, we went to Bali. Jan stayed for two weeks, and I stayed for a month. After that, I spent two months in Thailand.

While Jan stayed in Fiji

But now, after nearly two years, we are in Sweden. Our home here is primarily my boat, Kailani, where I have lived year-round since 2020. The boat dates back to 1977 and is quite basic. This spring, there has been a lot of talk about a toxic substance called TBT, which was used in antifouling paints and primers until 1989. There is talk of a total ban and that boats containing TBT will not be permitted to be launched. We do not know if Kailani has it, but the likelihood is high for a boat of that age. Since we do not know when or for how long we will be in Sweden next, we decide to scrape all the paint below the waterline right down to the bare hull.

It is a job we hope will take about four days. Since the paint is toxic, we aren’t allowed to scrape the hull where the boat is currently docked; instead, we’ve been given space in the workshop at Fantasi Marina, where Kailani is moored, beneath the Skaftö Bridge. We aren’t permitted to sleep on board while in the workshop, so we are staying at Örtorp Hostel, just a five-minute drive away.

We, or rather Jan, start by brushing on paint remover and then scraping. It is stuck fast. The first layer comes off a little with a great deal of effort and manual labor. Getting through all the layers of paint feels impossible. Yet, inch by inch, we make progress. The cans of paint remover are disappearing at an alarming rate. Jan scrapes while I drive to the shops to buy more. When the stock in Uddevalla runs out, I have to drive to Trollhättan. We try products from both Biltema and Seasea; Biltema’s seems to work best. And I say that even though I’m not exactly a Biltema fan. The work is grueling, truly grueling, and it feels almost hopeless. What have we gotten ourselves into? Jan tramps around in the scraped-off paint, which is sticky and clings to his boots and clothes. Eventually, the seat of his trousers becomes like a suit of armor, caked in layers of paint. He soldiers on, wearing a gas mask and battling increasingly painful muscles in both arms.

The work goes forward

Men skälvklart otroligt viktigt.

Slowly but surely, we’re making progress and starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The original four days have now turned into fourteen. The bill from the boatyard keeps mounting. As do the costs for all the other essentials we need for the heavy sanding work. The iron keel is rusty, so it also needs to be sanded down and coated with anti-rust paint. Finally, we’re satisfied with the result. Now it’s time to start applying the light primer. I buy countless cans in different colors so we can see where we’ve painted. Five coats are required, with about 12 hours of drying time between each. But this part of the job feels fun; building things up is much more enjoyable than sanding them down. The preparatory work is both tedious and time-consuming though, of course, incredibly important. After sixteen days, we’re finished, and all that’s left is the antifouling paint. We arrive at the yard at 7 a.m. and start painting. The launch is scheduled for the next day, we can hardly wait! An hour or so after we finish painting, we get word that the launch is happening, right now!

After 16 days she is ready

And so it happens. They bring Kailani out of the workshop and drive her over to the launch site. She is lifted up, and we apply antifouling paint to the spots where the supports had been. And just like that, she’s in the water. No water leaks in, the engine starts smoothly, and Kailani is quickly moved to her home berth at D18.

Just a little more
Messenger_creation_7D4CB01B-E204-4CAE-BDA3-71A656EB0548
And finally we are splashed

In addition to all the scraping below the waterline, I’ve washed, polished, and waxed the entire boat. We also had to buy three new house batteries; the old ones lasted ten years, so they certainly performed better than expected. Unfortunately, I also had to get a new starter battery. I bought a new one just two years ago, but it didn’t survive two winters in storage ashore. I’ve realized there really is a difference between Biltema and expensive name-brand batteries. This spring has been extremely expensive. The costs for scraping the hull and repainting it come to over 30,000 kronor, including 16 nights at a hostel, and that’s not even counting the bill from the boatyard yet. On top of that, there were the new batteries, new galley equipment, and a new mattress topper and sheets.

Another issue we’ve struggled with, but still haven’t really tackled, is our storage unit. It’s been overrun by mice; there are droppings and urine everywhere. I’ve had to throw out all the food, including items in cans, glass jars, and plastic packaging. There were even Tetra Paks that they’d chewed right through. Virtually all my shoes have been ruined, and cushions, duvets, mattresses, and other fabric items are either destroyed or covered in mouse droppings and urine. Sorting it all out properly is going to be a massive job. My storage unit is packed floor-to-ceiling: furniture and moving boxes at the back, and everything related to the boat at the front. I sold a house six years ago, so everything I own is in there. Jan sold a house too, but he didn’t keep as much furniture and household gear as I did. Now, I’m buying large plastic bins to store clothes, duvets, pillows, and other fabric items. All food will be kept exclusively in plastic bins as well. We won’t have time to find a cheaper storage unit to switch to this summer; I’m starting work soon and will be working heavily right through to mid-August.

But now, a wonderful summer awaits in Sweden, along with its highlight—Tobias and Sandra’s wedding!

Back in Sweden

Oh how I’m enjoying myself here in beautiful Bohuslän.  I am sitting in my boat, Kailani, out among the islands with the beautiful red granite that is so special to this part of the coast. The season here is coming to an end and there is hardly a boat out. Two to three weeks ago it was chaos here with all the boats looking for a night port out among the rocks. Now it’s just a matter of picking and choosing among the most beautiful and most protected and easily accessible places. Out here at Skarvesäter, I have been lying for a few days. The sun has been shining almost all the time, but it has been quite windy. Especially at night when it was more than 18 meters per second at most. But I’m safe here, even if it’s at the far end of the ocean strip. The site is well protected with its many fixed studs that the Cruiser’s Club has attached to the mountains

I have been working a lot since we came home to Sweden.  And it’s been great fun! Love my workplace where I worked for 17 years before resigning last year. So it’s perfect to come in as an hourly substitute now that I’m at home. There was a big hug party the first few days when I got to see old colleagues and also some residents I had met before. It was easy to get into all tasks and it felt as if I had never been outside of Sweden. Hopefully there will be one more shift before I fly on.

Since I work 24-hour shifts, there will be some days off in between. All of these have been used to go out by boat to Gåsöskärgården, which is completely outside the home port in Källviken.

There have been a series of social meetings with friends from the fb group Mingel & Båtliv. Great fun with all the meetings! We have enjoyed with our friends and lay on some of my pearls in the Gåsö archipelago. A wonderful friend, Gigi, who comes to me every year, has also managed to come here. For a day we had a very successful and beautiful star anchoring. If I’m not mistaken, we were twelve boats. Mixed sizes and of course two motorboats were also welcome. The star anchor was noticed by a local newspaper so it got publicity and lots of likes.

Speaking of which, a newspaper has also interviewed me. Norra Halland found out about our long-distance sailing and became extremely curious about my life. From the time I sold my house in Onsala and moved into my little sailboat. Until I met Jan and we set off on our long voyage which looks like it will be a round-the-world voyage.

Time is running out here in Sweden for this visit. Soon we will fly back to Colombia and our boat Vilja. The hurricane season is coming to an end but we will have a few months in Colombia including backpacking into South America. That will be exciting!

Båtsommar 2024
Sometimes the clouds are hanging over the sea

Riktigt kort men ändå härlig intensiv säsong.

In a couple of days we will start emptying Kailani, mast down and next Monday she will be lifted ashore. Really short but still lovely intense season. New adventures await! Backpacking South America and then Panama’s fantastic island world in the Caribbean with San Blas and maybe even Los Boccas. Follow us to see where we end up…will it be through the Panama Canal or not? IF it happens, the sailing will be really long ahead with many big oceans to cross. The Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic twice more.

Grenada and flying back to Sweden

These are the last shaky days of sailing for me.  At least on this side of hurricane season.  Then we’ll see what happens this fall.  So now it’s time to take the opportunity to fully enjoy the sun, heat, sea, sailing and the free and carefree life.

On Tuesday we checked out of St Vincent and the Grenadines on Canouan to sail the short distance down to Carriacou.  Where we would check into Grenada.  It was a pleasant sail and it was nice to be out at sea again and hear the clack of the boat as we sailed along at about five knots.  Now on our way south, we have pretty much a veil, meaning that the wind comes in obliquely astern, plus often the current with us.  It is still the northeast trade wind that prevails with its eight to twelve meters per second wind.  The exception is when we come in the lee of an island. Then you never know how the winds move and there are many gusts coming down from the high mountains.

Sailing for full sails in Caribbean
On the way from Canouan to Carriacou

At Carriacou we met Henning from Norway who we met the last time we were in Tyrrell bay. And in the evening we went to the Lambi Queen bar where many people gathered to wave to the American Bill who left his boat and flew back to the USA the next day.

We stayed two nights at Carriacou.  There were no excursions this time, but only the purchase of some food and cleaning agents to try to avoid mold attacks when Vilja will be left alone on land in the heat this summer.

Tyrrell bay where we stayed on our way north and now came back to on the way south again

From Tyrrel bay we went a little north again to the small island of Petit Martinique, which is Grenada’s northernmost outpost. Not many boats get here, so it is a very untouched and authentic island with friendly locals. We took the dinghy ashore and walked the only road through the village and then the beach back to the dinghy. Hardly a car drove on the road and it was very quiet. As well as loud music from a number of small bars. Here in the Caribbean they really love loud music.

We arrived the small and untuched island of Petite Martinique
White sand and a bay with only two sailboats, one from Denmark and Vilja. Plus, of course, local fishingboats

On our short walk we saw at least five cemeteries between the houses and goats walking around the middle of the street. Often the goats are tied in short ropes from one of their legs to keep them from running around everywhere. It is the end of the dry season now and what little grass there is is dry and brown so the goats cannot live such a prosperous and happy life.

Only small houses on this authentic Island
And, of course, goats everywhere

Along the beach we saw a number of boats being built.  The inhabitants here live mainly by boat building but also by fishing.  Long ago, smuggling was another common way of making a living on the island.

Building boats is a long tradition on this Island

Toppen ligger omkring 180 meter under havsytan.

We stayed one night at Petite Martinique and then had another pleasant sail south.  This time the target was the island of Ronda, which lies midway between Carriacou and Grenada.  It is an uninhabited island best known for being on the edge of the underwater volcano Kick’em Jenny.  Kick’em Jenny forms a deep-sea mountain with a height of approximately 1300 meters above the seabed.  The top is about 180 meters below sea level.  It is a volcano that has had many eruptions over the years.  The first documented was in 1939 and the latest was as late as 2017. Around the volcano there is a safety zone where you are not allowed to pass by boat.  Outside this safety zone there is yet another zone.  In the event of an eruption, you may not move by boat within this zone either.  Our anchorage for two nights on Ronda Island was ten meters outside the outer safety zone.

We are getting closer to Ronda Island and the submarine volcano namned Kick’em Jenny. The mountain behind Jan is called Kick’em Jenny Rock.

We arrived at Clark Court bay on Grenada Sunday afternoon.  And the next day the life raft, which had previously fallen into the water, was handed in for inspection.  It is important that it works before the next longer crossing.

After the life raft was handed in, we took the boat the short way to Prickley bay.  In contrast to the pleasant sailings of the past few weeks, this turned out to be a bouncy and windy trip.  It was nice that it only lasted about an hour.  Now we are moored in Prickley bay and several A4 pages of tasks await Jan.  The entire boat must be inspected and fixed both inside, on top, outside and below the water surface.  For about three weeks Vilja will lie in the water and then  about three weeks on land with Jan staying here. He’ll leave for Sweon the 18:th of June.  Yesterday we took down two large sails which we packed up as best we could to hand them in for inspection.  All the food we have stowed is gone through and much is vacuum packed and put into large plastic boxes to reduce the risk of small insects getting into the boat and the food and to reduce the risk of mould.  The boat will be empty on land for over three months, so unfortunately a lot can happen in the heat and humidity.

I myself go to the airport today, Wednesday, and fly home to Gothenburg and work.  It will be an adjustment to suddenly, after six months, have times to fit in and a job to go to.  Lucky it’s the month of May and a wonderful boating season awaits in Sweden among the red rocks in Bohuslän.  Not so bad either…
