More of Tonga

The day after our dance, Små Grodorna, we move to a new anchorage. Lisa’s bay. A really beautiful anchorage. Well protected and plenty of space. It will be very windy in the coming days so we want to lie safe without worrying about dragging.

Tongan feast!

Tongan feast! Something most sailors want to experience. We are a large group of sailors from six boats who sign up. First there is a dinghy trip to the beach and then a walk to the nearest village where we are picked up by car. There are already more participants at the restaurant and three men are sitting playing and singing Tongan traditional music. After a while the fantastic food is served, laid out on a long table. It is roast pork, chicken, squid, fish and various salads, noodles and rice. Everything tastes incredibly good and there is plenty of food so we are really full. It is nice to, for once, come to a set table. After the meal there is the kava ceremony. ‘Kava is a traditional Tongan drink that is a deeply rooted part of the culture. It is used in everything from royal ceremonies and weddings to social gatherings and religious rites. The drink, which is made from the roots of a plant in the pepper family (Piper methysticum), has calming effects and symbolizes important Tongan virtues such as respect and community.’ Text taken from Google. It doesn’t taste much, perhaps a bit of forest and we might sense a slightly numb feeling on the tongue and lips. After the kava there is a dance show. We are spoiled by what we have seen in Samoa so this show may not leave such a deep impression. But it still sets the mood for the evening and is beautiful to watch. When it is all over we are satisfied with a very successful and pleasant evening. Now it is time for us to walk almost 1 km in pitch black darkness to our dinghies.

When we are in Lisa’s bay, we are four Swedish boats plus Magic and Scout. There will be several sundowners and nice socializing on different boats several of the days. Even a cinnamon bun on cinnamon bun day aboard the Swedish boat Bengt. It is a calm and protected bay so we don’t notice that it is quite windy outside.

Idag hissas Jan upp i masten.

Today Jan is being hoisted up the mast. Magnus on Lulu and Dan on Magic are helping. A rig check is a good idea before we go out on several long sailings. We won’t have the opportunity for a professional rig check for a very long time either. Dan has to work hard to winch Jan up and he wonders how many beers Jan has had. Everything looks good and Jan can be lowered back down. At the same time, James on the boat Scout is up in their mast.

Sunday and we want to go to church. We have heard that there is an incredible amount of singing and music and we want to experience that. We stay here in Lisa’s Bay and get to take the dinghy to a beach and then walk a quarter of an hour to the nearest village. Once we arrive at the church, there are about 20 minutes left so we wait outside. Finely dressed people of all ages flock to the church. Surprisingly many small children. The girls are wearing princess dresses and the boys traditional ”skirts” and a kind of woven rugs on top. The adults are just as finely dressed. The men all have jackets and ties and the traditional skirt with a kind of apron in a material that looks like a braided basket. The women have dresses and on top they have various pieces of jewelry around their waists and skirts made of the same basket-like material as the men’s aprons. Many people come up to greet us and ask if we should join the service. Even the priest comes up and shakes our hands. The priest is dressed in bright blue with a tie with a cross on it. We see inside the church that all those who are active in the service are wearing the same bright blue color. And what a wonderful service! A choir sings countless songs and music flows out through the speakers. The children run around between the rows of chairs but are mostly calm and not loud in their play. They are used to being in church every week. In front of us sits a little boy with a lot of running in his legs. He is restless and very curious about us. Jan gets big looks all the time and what at first is a little worried fascination turns into smiles.

Jan and I take a walk on the island and get to walk through tarot plantations, palm trees and lovely greenery. The idea is a slightly longer walk but suddenly we see bulls on the way. We have heard a lot about these bulls and quickly turn around and go back again. Lulu, Angelina and Scout leave for further sailing while Magic and I go back into the village of Neifa. We are both going up on the hard to make sure the boats are nice underneath. Aura is already there being taken cared of.

Sedan trycks hon uppåt lite i taget.

Being hauled out here is sometimes something completely different from how it is done in Sweden. Here it is the same kind of maneuver as it was in Vista Mar in Panama. We, who are quite deep-sea, have to come up when there is extra high tide. A cart is driven under the boat and two men dive down and take care of the lines and other things that make the boat a guest of the cart. Then she is pushed up a little at a time. From below. When she is completely up on the cart, the tractor can drive her up, on the cart, onto land. Once up there it will be a day of intensive work. First high-pressure washing and then all the penetrations are cleaned of barnacles, the propeller is polished to a shiny shine, the anode is replaced and our anti-fouling paint, coppercoat, is activated by sanding it. A day later we are back in.

We also visit the floating bar a couple of times. In addition to that, we will be carrying a lot of provisions and we will buy soap bubbles, balloons, crayons, writing pads and other small things to give to children on remote atolls in the countries ahead of us.

Jan is doing some job in a narrow space

One day we also do a whale safari. The large Humpback whales come to Tonga to rest and give birth for a few months each year. It is Tonga’s largest tourism industry and people from all over the world come here to swim with whales. Everything is done in a controlled manner with a maximum of four people in the water at the same time and the boat that transports them stays a bit away. The whales also seem curious about us humans. We do this trip at the end of the season so many whales have already swam on. The wind is 11-12 m/s and the conditions for swimming/snorkeling are tough. First we follow, from a distance, a lone calf but the guide notices that it will not work. It moves all the time and then it does not work. Then we find a mother whale with a calf. Often, when the whales are here in Tonga, they dive far down into the sea and rest and then come up to get air. It is on those occasions that the opportunity to swim with them is available. The mother with calf also swims all the time and we follow them from a distance. But sometimes they appear right next to us. You see the spray followed by the back and finally the tail fin that disappears into the sea. Suddenly the mother and the baby start jumping out of the water. As if they want to give us a show. Sometimes they are quite close to us but usually a couple of hundred meters away. It is a fantastic experience that we could hardly have dreamed of. The show lasts for over an hour and it feels magical to experience it. Unfortunately, we will not be swimming with the whales but we are still very happy with the experience we have had.

Today is Sunday again and we go to church once again. This time to the big church in the main town here on Vava’u. Birgitta, Kelly and Dan also come along. Tonga stops on Sundays, no one works and most of the very religious population, dress in the finest they have and then decorate their clothes by putting on a traditional ta’ovala. A kind of woven rug that they drape around the waist. This time too the church is almost full and children of all ages participate. The roof is almost lifted by all the singing and music. It is a wonderful event and we feel that we are going to experience part of their rich culture.

Now we are lying at a buoy waiting to check out. It will probably be this afternoon and tomorrow we plan to sail north towards the country of Wallis and Futuna. A small country consisting of three islands with a total of about 12,000 inhabitants. Now we will say goodbye to all our wonderful friends. It is and feels hard. We have become very close to each other. This is the hardest part of sailing. All the goodbyes. Luckily, we have fantastic experiences ahead of us.

Samoa – in our hearts

Samoa, a country we have come to love. From the very beginning. The people here have hearts of gold and are so accommodating, humble, friendly and smiling.

Finally reaching Samoa

Check-in goes well. First, biosecurity comes for a short stop. They welcome us to Samoa and are happy that we have a Samoan flag to hoist as a guest flag on the mast. Then we get to pick up representatives from customs, immigration and port office with our dinghy. The atmosphere is good on board with lots of laughter as we fill in all the forms and stamp them with our Vilja stamp. They love stamps here and make sure that all the papers are stamped. They are offered homemade cakes and Coca Cola, which they appreciate. Since we do not have Samoa as a country of call, we have to write a letter and explain why we are here. We describe the storm to the south and the damage we suffered on the boat during the storm we encountered. Of course, that paper is also stamped. So now we just have to wait to be called on the VHF to see if we are allowed to stay or not. A few hours later, the statement comes and we are now officially welcome and can go to immigration and collect our passports. Aura, who arrived at the same time as us, accompanies us on the short taxi ride away.

Now all three of us are back together again, but Aura is leaving tomorrow and Magic on Sunday, so we book a table at the Paddle restaurant tonight. Having visitors in their dinghy and they took a photo of us

To see more of Samoa we rent a car today. Magic would have been there but was prevented. We drive east along the coast on the north side of the island. In all the villages we pass it feels like they are competing to have the most amazing garden. There are plants with flowers and colorful leaves everywhere. Incredibly beautiful. The traffic is calm and even though we drive on the left side of the road it feels good. We arrive at Piula cave pool on the north side of the island of Upolu. It is a beautiful freshwater pool with a cave and crystal clear water. We then drive over land with hills, greenery and mountains to the south side of Samoa. On the way we stop at a beautiful waterfall that we reach via a short walk. Once on the south side we find a fantastically beautiful beach with a restaurant and resort. Here we decide to take a break and have lunch. We feel that this is a place we could easily stay for a few days and ”just be”. The food is good and the view is striking.

Why not take a kayak on the sea

With our stomachs full and rested, we drive on and come to one of the highlights, Tu Soa Ocean Trench which means ”big swimming hole”. It is a hole in the ground that 30 meters down contains a pool of crystal clear salt water. You go down there on a steep long ladder. It is slippery and a little scary but very worth the trouble and we take a dip in the water.

The hours go by quickly when we are on an excursion. After the ”swimming hole” we drive to a botanical garden but realize that it is already too late in the afternoon so they have closed. So we just drive on back towards the capital Apia where Vilja is anchored. We fill up the car on the way back before we leave it. Here in Samoa, it is mostly cash only, both in most grocery stores and even at the gas station.

The bell rings early in the morning. Very early. It’s pitch black outside and we get dressed and take the dinghy to the dock. The reason is that it’s Sunday and the locals gather at the local fish market. It opens as early as 4am but we get there around 6am. It’s bustling with people and there’s plenty of fish to buy. And it’s so incredibly colorful! Parrotfish, groupers, surgeonfish, unicornfish. Everything is there and they shine in red, blue, green and yellow. Tuna of all sizes and crabs and lobsters. Basically only your imagination can stop you from finding what you can buy.

Once back at Vilja we are tired and satisfied. Our plan for the day continues. As I said, it is Sunday and Samoa is a religious country. So we decide to go to church in the large, beautiful Catholic church. I dress in a light, summery long dress and Jan borrows a sarong from me to cover my legs. Most men here in Samoa wear either a skirt or a sarong. Representatives of the church think it is so funny that we want to join and that Jan has dressed properly, so they take a picture of us before we go in and sit down. The church is large and bright. In the middle of the church room there is a fantastically beautiful round glass decoration on the ceiling. In one corner sits a choir. The music and singing dominate the service and it is very atmospheric and beautiful. In addition to the priest, there are several others who participate up at the altar, both young and a little older. The service is in English so we can follow what is said. Just like in the church in Sweden, it varies whether we stand up or sit down. Towards the end of the service, the priest gathers all the children in the church around him and blesses them by sprinkling water on them. At the very end there is communion. Before everyone gets up and we leave together with the other churchgoers.

Tuesday and we are going to a dance show. Dance is a big part of everyday life and culture here in Samoa, just like the rest of the South Pacific. Today is an evening with a show called Siva afi. A buffet of local food is served on plates made of palm leaves and then there will be a dance show. It is a fantastic show. The women are so beautiful in their yellow clothes and their dance expresses the feminine and graceful. Fingers and hand movements are an important part of the dance. The men’s dance is more about showing masculinity, power and strength. Despite such different performances, they dance to the same music. After the dance comes the fire show. It originated here in Samoa so it is extra fun to see it. We are very happy when the evening is over and we take a taxi back to the marina and our dinghy.

So…what people live here. They are so incredibly friendly and accommodating. It’s also nice to be understood in English after 2 years in first Spanish-speaking and then French-speaking countries. When we say we come from Sweden, almost everyone can place the country in northern Europe. Impressive3. With my hand on my heart – how many of us Swedes can place Samoa on the world map. Samoa is a bit like Thailand in the 80s. Almost no tourists and everyone is curious about us. Not so many places on earth that we can experience it anymore in the 2020s.

We go to another dance show the next day. This time it is at a hotel and it is called Fiafia show. We believe that this is a pure fire show. But it is not. The buffet here is even better than yesterday and we enjoy it. The dancing is also nice but not as nice as yesterday. I think the environment plays a big part. Today it is, as I said, at a hotel while yesterday it was in front of and on a wall. The audience at both places consists largely of local Samoans and the rest are Samoans who now live or were born in New Zealand and Australia. We are the only Europeans. And many ask us what we are doing here on the other side of the world. And when they hear that we sailed here they are very impressed

The days pass and we enjoy Samoa. We have a lot to repair and Jan is busy sewing. Both the bimini and the sail. The attempts with the sewing machine on the sail are going so-so. The needle breaks countless times so it’s mostly hand sewing. The two slats that have disappeared/broken are also replaced and a plank is bought to launder diesel cans around on deck. We drop off laundry at a laundromat, have a lot of paper copied and print out forms that we will need in the future in the different countries we will visit.

Now the boat Scout has arrived here. We have met on various occasions since last summer in Cartagena. It is so fun to meet different sailing friends from all over the world in different places. The South Pacific is huge yet we manage to meet. It will be an evening at the nearest bar together with 2 other boats that are here in Samoa. As always, just as nice and we sailors here have so much to talk about.

I think it is a way to start teaching them about different countries and cultures around the world.

Sunday again. We loved the fish market last Sunday so getting up at 5am feels totally fine. Just like last Sunday, we get there just as the sun rises and the sky starts to brighten and show its beautiful colors. Here too, there is a variety of fish and shellfish. The colors are indescribable and we enjoy it. We buy tuna fillet for a very low price compared to back home and it brings back memories of all the delicious meals. In Sweden, I buy fresh tuna the few times I really want to celebrate something. It’s insanely expensive and exclusive. Here it probably tastes even better but costs about 1/10 of the price

Now we are starting to plan for continued sailing. The winds are blowing straight south and we will sail south towards Tonga so we have to wait a few days. Thursday looks like a good day. Still big waves so it will be both rolling and bumpy but the wind will hopefully come from the east so we won’t have to cruise.

Before leaving we go to another dance show. The evening is fantastic, again, with good food, nice company and an incredible dance show. Another Swedish boat has appeared. Ohana. There are surprisingly many Swedish boats in this part of the world. Here in Samoa, where there are few sailboats, we have been 4 Swedish boats in 2 weeks

We are now cleared and heading south towards Tonga. We hope for a good sailing without complications.

Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a – boatwork and tours

Lazy days on Huahine.  At least to start with. When we arrive we look for a free buoy but don’t find one. So we think we can anchor instead. A large area is marked as forbidden to anchor at so we go a little further inland but still far from the coral reefs, which we don’t want to destroy. As soon as we start to take out the anchor to lower it to the bottom we hear whistling and angry shouts. A man on land makes it clear that we are not allowed to anchor. We stop immediately and back away from there. He apparently takes it as if we are backing up the anchor and continues to mark that we are not allowed to anchor. We obviously respect that it is not allowed. We are guests here in their country and both we and our boats must show consideration. That’s what we think wherever we go. So instead we circle around for an hour or so until a buoy seems to become free. Now another boat has come in and is circling around and they are marking that they intend to take the buoy. Even though we were there almost an hour before them. An unwritten rule is that whoever is there first has the right to the spot. So it gets a bit infected. They choose to jump in and dive to see how deep the sandbank is if the boat turns around 180°. They then notice that their boat is too long so their depth rudder will get stuck. So they call us up on the VHF and say we can take the spot. Once there we also measure and it is borderline if we might end up going into the sand with our rudder. But we are so happy to finally get a buoy and take it. For the first time I am the one who steers in and Jan is the one who picks up the buoy eye. Usually I steer when we drop the anchor and take care of lowering the anchor and also raising it again, but Jan usually steers in for the buoy.

Magic and Aura welcome us to Huahine

The water here has an absolutely magical color. It is incredibly turquoise over the large and wide sandbank that goes all the way out to the reef where big waves break. We take the dinghy out there to get closer to the huge waves but there are several boomies (coral rocks) out there so we don’t get as close as we want.

Here on Huahine we take it easy. Not as much fixing as in Tahiti. I listen to a book for several hours a day and enjoy it. Jan fixes a little and goes out snorkeling. It’s nice to take a moment and ”just be”. The anchorage is beautiful, we are protected behind the reef and we take the day as it comes.

Second day here today and we go in with the dinghy together with Kelly and Dan for a walk in the village. Tonight we are going to a restaurant together and Birgitta and Lasse are also going. It will be a very nice evening with good food, sunset and nice company. We wish three boats could sail together for at least a year. But they will go south towards New Zealand and we will go north towards Kiribati.

But, smolk in the cup…we have new problems with the boat, one of which is big. Thought we would avoid more problems. On the smaller side, the opening hatch we have mainly in the spray hood has come loose. And this for the third time now. It is attached to hinges with pop rivets and we do not have pop rivet pliers. Luckily, Aura has one and then the problem is easily solved! The next problem is the stove, which hangs loosely on two small rods in brackets on each side. This is needed because the stove must be able to swing when we tilt or rock so that pots and pans are always horizontal and nothing spills over. The bracket on one side has now broken and there are no spare parts. Jan has drawn how he wants some turned and welded and we hope to get it sorted on the next island. Our newly installed saltwater pump runs hot and doesn’t produce enough water, so we can only use it sparingly. It was the best installation on the boat of all, in my opinion. This is a thing that have ended up further down the to-do list. Unfortunately.

So to our new big problem. The entire battery bank of eight batteries has collapsed. They don’t receive enough energy and then the refrigerator, freezer, starlink and everything else that runs on electricity on board stop working. During the day we have managed because our solar panels are constantly replenishing with new power. But at night the alarm sounds when, for example, the freezer shuts down. So for 3-4 nights now we have had to get up every three hours to start the engine. Then one of us sits awake for about an hour with the engine on. At least three times a night we need to do this so that all the food in the freezer and fridge is not ruined. So, the only thing now is to buy a completely new battery bank. Luckily, we are close to the next island that also has a mechanic. We don’t have to go back to Tahiti again. We wanted to see many anchorages on Huahine and snorkel more but decide to go directly to Raiatea. Jan has already got in touch with a man here who will help us with new batteries. We knew about the battery problem since we left Grenada in the fall of 2023 but have been putting it off. The plan now was to replace the battery bank in Indonesia next spring. But, now it has completely collapsed so we have to rethink.

The window that has collapsed

So we are now at the quay again and today all the old batteries have been removed and six new ones installed. To increase our power generation we are purchasing another solar panel and our regulators are being placed in new, more accessible locations and thicker cables are being installed.

Work with the batteries goes on
Messenger_creation_E7855032-F986-4EE9-86F5-946D563A66E9
I took a walk along the pier and a small fishibgboat arrived with this hughe swordfish. I bought 1,5 kilos for around 10 dollars.

Third day of work now. Starting to feel like we’re doing nothing but working on the boat. It’s also getting expensive. The batteries cost about 18,000 kronor and now 3 full days of work on it, also about 18,000 kronor. There are more fun things to spend money on. But we’re already noticing a huge difference with the new batteries. The freezer is colder and the batteries last all night and even when it’s cloudy. Moving our regulators with thicker cables will also give us greater safety and definitely less risk of fire. Apparently the cables have been hot a few times and that’s not good. We’re going out to sea and to countries where few sailboats sail and where spare parts will be basically impossible to find. So we need Vilja to be in good condition.

Many days of hard job and the boat is a mess

French Polynesia is widely known for its incredibly beautiful pearls. Most famous are the colored pearls that are found nowhere else in the world. They are black, green, eggplant, turquoise and blue. The oysters used are ”Black lipped” and they only grow here. There are pearl farms on most islands in the Tuamotus and they are also here on Taha’a. We visit one of the smallest farms in the country but they still produce 20,000 – 30,000 pearls per year. The environment is incredibly beautiful and our guide tells us how the cultivation is done. They carefully open the oyster just a little bit and place a small ball made of seashell with long tools similar to a dentist’s. The oysters are then placed deep in the water where they are allowed to remain for 18 months before the pearl is ready. In 20% of the oysters, beautiful round or teardrop-shaped pearls are formed. These are then categorized into different classes. Even the ”deformed” ones are used for jewelry and they are also beautiful. The jewelry in the shop that belongs to the pearl farm is incredibly beautiful. And expensive. There are jewelry here for several million kronor. Many pieces of jewelry cost several hundred thousand kronor each. The best quality pearls go for 200,000 kronor just for one pearl in a ”basket” of gold. So incredibly beautiful! We are three women on the tour and we are yearning for the jewelry. Kelly at Magic buys a necklace with 3 pearls and I buy one with two pearls. An incredible memory from this beautiful country and our trip. These pearls are considered the most exclusive and beautiful in the world and I am very pleased!

Taha’a is also the island where Tahitian vanilla is primarily grown. 80% of the country’s vanilla comes from here. So today we visit a vanilla farm. We get a description of the vanilla that is grown here. It is said to be extremely concentrated in flavor and is very exclusive. It is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after spices by confectioners and chefs around the world. This exceptional vanilla originally comes from islands in Indonesia, and the production is very exclusive. The vanilla plant is an orchid plant that needs a tree to grow on. Here they grow on fig trees. The flower is yellow-green and takes nine months before it is transformed into a vanilla pod. Each flower must be pollinated manually. We buy both pure real vanilla powder and extract. Which will be fun to try in cooking and baking. Even today I am very satisfied!

It will be a few days of waiting and today we go on a tour with a fantastic guide – Noah from Vanilla travel. We take the dinghy into his childhood home and he tells us about his upbringing and shares all his knowledge about everything that grows in the garden. He tells us how he picked plants and lay on his back and enjoyed eating them, looking up at the sky as a 6-year-old. What a wonderful life! Countless fruits and medicinal plants grow here. While he is telling us, we see that his parents are doing yoga in a Sala (open pavilion) down by the shore.

Noah takes us to a wild vanilla plantation where we climb into the greenery. It is magically beautiful with the high mountains in the background. On countless plants the beautiful vanilla flower blooms in yellow-green. We get a detailed description of all the phases of the plant and a demonstration of the ”Vanilla wedding”. That’s what it’s called when they manually pollinate the vanilla flower. Each flower is both male and female and we get to see in detail how Noah carries out the pollination with his hands.

The journey takes us further around the island and we pass, among other things, a copper production facility where everything is done manually. Copra is the dried white part of a coconut and is one of the world’s most important raw materials for fat production. Coconut fat or coconut oil is obtained from pressed copra, and the press residue is used to make feed cakes, which are an important feed for animals.

We make a stop to eat lovely fresh fruits from the garden. Bananas, papaya, pamplemousse, coconut, guava and starfruit

The last stop is a combined coconut oil production and rum distillery. Here we get a quick overview of how they produce coconut oil and then we see them put the sugar cane in a machine to extract the sweet liquid that turns into ethanol and methanol. This is then separated by heat, among other things, before they produce white and dark rum with different strengths, ages and flavors. We take the opportunity to buy passion fruit rum, which sounds very good.

Tomorrow morning, at 6 am, we plan to sail towards Bora Bora.

Beautiful Moorea

What a wonderful sailing! Today we finally leave Tahiti again. The sea foams and roars around us. It’s blowing about 13 m/s, light wind. The occasional wave hits us so we get wet in the cockpit but we’re on our way. And we’re enjoying it. Imagine finally being out on the sea again. The last few days there have been high swells in the area so we’ll see if we make it through the pass to the north side of Moorea. But we count on that.

This is how Moorea is shaped. We are sailing towards the big bays in the north

We approach Moorea’s magnificent green-clad mountains with their fantastic formations. It feels like it’s taken from a fairy tale adventure you see on TV. The sea is calm on the north side of Moorea and we sail towards Tiki anchorage bay, inside the reef, as we had imagined. Our friends on Magic are already there and it’s been a long time since we met. Outside the reef, Jan sees the back of a Humpback whale. It’s the season for them to be here now. Every July to October, humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic to the South Pacific Ocean in order to mate and calve. Unfortunately, I only saw it when it squirted water. The dream is to be surrounded by these colossal animals and to see them jump out of the water. Several of our friends have had that experience so the dream is not unrealistic.

Inside the reef we wind our way with the help of small poles to the anchorage. We drop the anchor so we end up in front of Magic. Finally at an anchorage. And what a fantastic view it is here. It is magical with the varied and lush greenery and the rock formations that create a rugged nature. The highest peak on the island is the extinct volcano Mont Toheia with its 1200 m.a.s.l.

Past us in the channel inside the reef pass countless sightseeing boats, dive boats, jet skis and small sailboats. A cruise ship is in the nearest large bay and the snorkeling a little further from where we are is supposed to be fantastic. As the afternoon begins to turn towards dusk, the calm returns.

Today we take our dinghy with Dan and Kelly to snorkel with manta rays and sharks. Hopefully we will also see some nice fish. It is fascinating how fearless the manta rays are and they swim right next to us. It is a bit touristy with all the people there to snorkel and swim but it is absolutely worth it.

Polynesia is probably known, for most people, for resorts with small huts out on the water with their own jetty down into the crystal clear water with snorkeling right outside the ”house corner”. These reporters are found in all the nice places. Hilton is a well-known chain with such fantastic luxury huts. It often costs from 5000 sek per night to stay like that. We see several reporters that are closed. Sad. And it is, what we think, Covid that is the reason for that. But of course we don’t know for sure.

Between sea and mountains

The social life is a big part of sailing around like this. We meet many other sailors from all corners of the world and we have a lot in common through the life we live. The boats are different sizes and the destinations differ a little but we share the love of the sea, sailing, the desire to discover and the desire to experience new places. During 2 evenings we hang out with Dan and Kelly and the second evening Aura with Birgitta and Lasse has also come. We have all run into each other in different places since Panama. Reunions are wonderful but the downside is all the farewells that are inevitable. We have different time frames and different wishes for destinations.

This morning Jan sets out on a hike up a mountain about 600 meters high. There he is rewarded with a strikingly beautiful view. He sees how the reef winds around the coast and how Vilja lies well protected inside. In the large bay lies a huge private luxury cruiser and just outside many sailboats at a different anchorage than the one we have chosen. When the hike is done, he enjoys a well-deserved smoothie.

Barely a week has passed since we arrived in Moorea but we also decide to sail on. Our plan, before all the engine problems, was to spend about 3 weeks on Moorea and explore all the anchorages. But since we are so late we change plans. Hopefully we will also meet our friends again on the next island. So today we weigh anchor at about 2:00 PM and sail west. Huahine is our next destination and if we keep around 5 knots we will arrive tomorrow morning. So this is a short sail. About the same distance as from Gothenburg to Strömstad. In Sweden we think that sailings of over 4 hours are really long, now a few days is a short distance.

The sun is sinking towards the horizon. A golden orange ball that slowly slides down and leaves behind a sky that sparkles in red, gold, orange and fiery yellow. It is equally fascinating every time. A fantastic spectacle that you never get tired of. We glide through the calm sea in a pleasant sailing. Vilja rocks so that we are almost lulled to sleep. Soon the sky darkens and our night shifts begin. It is an incredibly peaceful time to sit up surrounded by darkness and hear the sound of the waves and the lapping against Vilja’s hull.

Tsunami, roadtrip and engineproblem

Tsunami warning for the entire Pacific Ocean. Who doesn’t remember the devastation in Indonesia, Thailand and all the countries around Christmas 2004. This earthquake off Kamchatka is supposed to be among the 10 largest ever. We are sitting in the boat inside the Papeete marina on the north side of Tahiti and considering our options. The wave will arrive here in about 4 hours and we have no idea how big it is. It is coming from the north so we will definitely be affected. A first thought would be to leave the marina and sail to the south side of Tahiti instead. But there is a stiff gale there and we are blown in. So that is not possible. Moreover, it is dark now, past 8 pm. 3 hours left. What options do we have? Stay in the boat and be prepared to leave just before it is expected to arrive? Leave now and walk about 1 km from the harbor, inland? Or leave the harbor with Will and go out into the darkness on the open sea. With the risk of ending up in the gale that is already here? Our engine has just been serviced and was finished today, so we don’t dare to fully trust it since it has only been run for about 20 minutes. Our backpacks are packed with some supplies so we have prepared ourselves a little.

Right now we are waiting for more information about how Hawaii will be affected. Will the wave slow down? If it comes in here at full speed, Vilja will end up on the road ahead of us. Maybe 50 meters inland. Then there will not be much left of Vilja. It is difficult for Jan to leave now. Vilja is his home and the apple of his eye. Everything he has seen materially. It is irritable and stressful now. What should we do? New reports are about a 1 meter high wave out at sea. The Thailand wave was 1.2 meters and we know what it did when it came inland. Our friends at Aura are considering going out right now. We have rented a car together tomorrow. Wondering if it will work out?

This is how the tsunami starts and in the end

Vad mer? Har vi glömt något?

Time passes and the wave approaches. 2.5 hours until it is scheduled to arrive. Is it big? How powerful is it? All the movies from Thailand 2004 come to mind. Help. Is it a deadly wave? Or is it ”just” our boat, our home, that can be destroyed? Where should we go? Everything is flat here. The closest to us is a building with one staircase up….doesn’t feel really tsunami-proof since it faces the harbor. Should we leave now and walk inland instead? Our minds are spinning. Tsunami wave from north to south and gale force from south to north. They are coming, colliding and we have nowhere to seek shelter for both. So far, all the boats are still here in the harbor. I don’t know how many are prepared to leave. At short notice. 2 hours left now. The stress level is increasing. Are we doing the right thing if we stay here? Have we packed everything important? And how do we choose it? Some warm clothes, mobile phone with charger and power bank, of course documents like passport and papers on the boat, some water and some snacks. A few days of medicine. What else? Have we forgotten anything?

O tänk hur all information gått framåt.

If we look out into the harbor, the water is calm. Not a ripple. How could it change in such a short time? Hard to imagine. Oh, think how all the information has advanced. 25 years ago we didn’t know what a tsunami was. And when it happened, only the affected area noticed it. Now we can follow the tsunami hour by hour and are warned well in advance. Great

Time to leave Vilja. We close all the gaps and hope for the best. It still seems like the wave won’t be that massive

We take our backpacks and are leaving Vilja

We are sitting on a staircase a short distance from the harbor. The highest point we can find. Reassuring news from Hawaii that everything will probably be fine. At the same time, we hear a warning that the wave will be 4 meters in the Marquesas Islands, not far from here. There is no concrete warning here except that all islands in the South Pacific could be affected.

Here we are waiting

Time passes and the time for the wave passes. Not much seems to be happening so we go back to the harbor. We get word from others who chose to stay that the sea rose about 30 cm and then went down again. Great! There is no damage to the boats and the tsunami wave was not a real wave. We are so grateful for that. And we think that we made the right choice after all. Now the adrenaline is subsiding and we can go to bed. Exhausted and at the same time a little up in arms. In a few hours we will pick up a car that we rented for a day.

There won’t be many hours of sleep when the alarm rings. We have rented a car and are going to take the local bus to pick it up. It’s unfortunate that it’s the day after the tsunami warning, but now it’s like that..

The bus trip goes well and we find the rental place straight away. The car is checked over and off we go. Jan drives and we are both rusty at driving. About a year ago last time, in Sweden last summer. Driving a new car in a new country can be a test for us before you get to know the traffic. But it goes great and we set course south. The first stop will be a fantastic and new museum. Tahiti museum. Here we get to see an exhibition with photos from Tahiti and its people. Beautiful photos. Then we go to the permanent exhibition. An absolutely wonderful exhibition where we get to see the entire history of Tahiti and French Polynesia. We could stay here for hours but time is passing and we want to see more of the island.

So the journey continues along Tahiti’s west coast and south. The rain comes suddenly. We haven’t seen rain for about a month but luckily it doesn’t pour down. We stop at some caves where there are also waterfalls. Beautiful. Lunch is eaten inside the car to save time. Sushi for Jan and Sushimi on tuna for me. Even though we are parked in a parking lot, we have a view of Tahiti’s interior with high green-clad mountains and a waterfall. We had hoped to be able to drive inland but the only road is too narrow, curvy and in too poor condition so we are not allowed to drive it for the rental company. Instead we stop at a botanical garden, at a viewpoint and another waterfall. Tahiti’s nature is beautiful and varied and we are very happy when the day comes to an end and we are back on Vilja again.

We have set a day to leave Tahiti and sail towards Moorea now. It will be the day after tomorrow, Saturday. By then the strong winds should have subsided. It will be so nice to sail on to all the other islands we want to visit.

Thursday evening and Jan starts the engine on Vilja to see that everything works after the major service that has been done. The engine runs much quieter after the ”foot” that was broken has been replaced with a new one so we are happy. Until Jan discovers that it is not providing charge from the generator to the batteries. Sigh. We feel completely distressed and send an email to the workshop we used. They come the next morning and find out that the regulator is broken. And they say that they are not to blame for this. We think it is very strange because it worked the day before they took the engine apart and then it has not been able to be used because we have not had an engine. Sooo… Now we are staying here indefinitely. Today we feel very down. Instead of sailing away, we are staying here and we do not know how long. If we are lucky we can leave on Tuesday but we could be stuck for another month. Huge sigh. We have so many islands and so many countries we want to visit before the cyclone season starts in October – November.

Lycka! Jippie!

Good luck! The weekend is over and the electrician comes to Vilja early in the morning. It is then determined that the cable that Jan already thought last week was the problem was actually the problem. They had simply forgotten to put it back and when Jan pointed it out on Friday they firmly said that it was an old cable that had nothing to do with the new generator. Sour, annoying and expensive for us (we have paid for an extra week at the marina). But we can go! Yay!

A new member in the family – an extra outboard engine. We are so dependent of the dinghy and the engine so have a spare one is really good

The trip over to Moorea will take about 3 hours. We are aiming for the north side of the island and are now in the middle of it. Some sun, some rain today. It is rolling a bit as the lake is still there after the strong winds that have been for a week. But it is going smoothly. Birgitta and Lars at Aura helped us leave. Another sad farewell. Maybe we will meet in Indonesia in 2027. We are so enjoying being out on the sea again, to soon get to a new island and meet old friends. And soon we will be there.

And Tahiti

Här kastas vi från hopp till förtvivlan. Än en gång. Raskt.

Here we are thrown from hope to despair. Once again. Quickly. I hear a howling sound as we approach Moorea. Is it coming from the engine? Jan looks around and discovers that it is the cooling that is not working. When inspecting the engine room, he sees that all the cooling water has run out from under the engine. The engine is quickly shut off and we are only going under sail. We need to get service again so we gybe to turn around 180 degrees. The atmosphere on board is palpable. We are so disappointed. Darkness is approaching and we are discussing whether we should spend the time out at sea or wait until tomorrow to go in. We still have a couple of hours left to return to Papeete marina in Tahiti. The sailing back is slow and the engine is still too hot for us to dare to start it. But after an hour we think we will start and fill in new radiator water as it runs out. Jan sits down by the engine and I stand at the wheel and also keep an eye on the engine heat gauge

We also contact Birgitta at Aura who is sooo helpful. She looks for a man in a boat with a dinghy who will come and meet us when we are inside the pier. Just before it gets dark we get in.

Not only that, they also invite us to dinner and it is a wonderful and relaxing evening on board Aura, which we really need. Now we just hope that the personnel from the repair company will arrive early tomorrow. We have written emails, called and sent photos.

And they are coming at 9am today. When we parted ways we weren’t the best of friends because they didn’t want to take the blame for the problem with the generator. But today they are incredibly helpful and accommodating. Maybe a guilty conscience but the most important thing for us is that we get help. No point in being long-winded. And we get a present from them. Slightly flirtatious maybe but why be long-winded. Now maybe we can make another attempt to sail to Moorea soon

More of Tahiti

Frankrikes nationaldag. Otroligt vackert.

France’s national day. And we are in ”France” but on the other side of the world. As far away as you can get from European France. But this is EU light. Not like on some islands in the Caribbean where Swedish mobile subscriptions work, the currency is euros and the prices are like in France. Everything is extremely expensive here, we have to buy sim cards if we want to use the phone outside the boat and it is its own curriency. But, we can stay here as long as we want as EU citizens. Even though the boat has a maximum stay of 2 years. Many people take advantage of this and stay in this fantastic country for 1 – 2 years. The surface area is as large as the whole of Europe but most of it consists of sea. The difference between the island groups is enormous and there is so much to see and experience here. It is beautiful. Incredibly beautiful.

National Day is celebrated with parades. Many parades. First the military, police and other authorities. Ministers, senators and other high-ranking people also take part in the parade. There is music and some groups sing songs in chorus. We stand along a street together with, above all, many locals. There are beautiful trees that provide shade but I have ended up in the scorching sun at the front of the street. I don’t want to lose that spot so I use many liters of water to quench my thirst in the heat.

At the end of the parade there is a traditional dance. Men and women in local bast costumes. And wow wad the women can wiggle their hips. Never seen anything like it. Sooo cool! It’s a bit of a dream to experience this here in the tropical Pacific Ocean, in French Polynesia. Fantastic culture and a memory for life. Another one.

Ens utan tyngden.

We are here in the middle of a cultural festival called Heiva. And this afternoon it is the fruit race. Locals from different island groups in French Polynesia and neighboring countries run with fruit on a log on their shoulders. It is bananas, tarot, pineapples, coconuts etc. etc. The weight is between 15 and 30 kilos. Wow what a heroic effort they make. Imagine running with that weight barefoot many laps along a track in the street. Some do it with bravura and others struggle a little more. But everyone makes a heroic effort. I myself would not have even had the strength to lift the log and much less run. Even without the weight.

This morning we responded to a sailboat at anchor that was moving strangely. All other boats normally lie with the bow to the wind but not this one. Even though it did the day before. We also think that it is lying deeper in the water than yesterday. After an hour or so it has started to list and then it goes fast. Suddenly half the boat is underwater and that the boat has sunk is unfortunately a fact. It is a beautiful boat and it feels so tragic and unreal to see the whole sequence of events. Someone’s dream that has come crashing down.

We take the long trip from the anchorage to Papeete town and walk around the promenade. Here we find a cozy bar out in the water where we have a glass of wine/a glass of beer. The sunset over Moorea is fantastic and we enjoy our life. It feels completely unbelievable that we are in Tahiti in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

An American, Magic, an Australian, Onyx, a British, Xora and another American, Divergent. Sometimes we gather on board a boat, play games, eat together and have a good time. And sometimes we go out to a bar. For a few days now we have had a place for Vilja at the Papeete marina in the middle of town so now it is easy to hang out and run errands in town.

Even when we are out sailing we have to take care of our teeth so we book an appointment with the dentist. Both of us. A complete annual check-up with x-rays, cleaning and check-up to make sure there are no cavities. We both have nice teeth but Jan lost a piece of a filling a few months ago. So there will be another visit and a crown will be put in place.

The cultural festival Heiva, which started on July 3, continues and every night there are performances on a stage. There are dance groups from all over the country competing against each other. Today is the penultimate day and we have bought tickets for the event. And what an experience it is! Earlier this week, apparently the performances have not been as outstanding, but we are lucky and get to see the best groups. The winners! Imagine if we had understood the French and Polynesian languages. We understand that there are traditional stories that are told during the dances. And with incredible empathy. If we thought the hip rolls were amazing on National Day, this is absolutely incredible. On stage there are up to 200 people in amazing costumes and headgear. The orchestra with incredible precision on its drums is unforgettable. And the women. They wiggle their hips as if they have no joints. In addition, they squat down and continue wiggling while moving forward on their squats. It’s unbelievable how they manage it. The show lasts for over 5 hours and we leave with an incredible feeling of having really seen and experienced the local culture. What a joy! And how lucky we are to be here right now.

Reluctantly I have agreed to stay here in the marina in Tahiti for about 10 – 14 more days. We have had an engine service and they had some things to comment on. There is both a water leak and an oil leak, among other things. They say that about 3 days of work are needed. Not exactly cheap. Over 33,000 kronor in total. It will probably be until the week after next before they can start. We first thought that we could sail to Moorea and stay there for a week and come back. But then we would lose our place in the port.

Ok.

Ok. Now we are here, much longer than expected, and want to try to use the time practically and also experience things. At the same time as we want to continue to several other islands, we have to take the opportunity to use the time we have here. There is a lot of work to do with the boat. There is black mold at all the windows and openings that needs to be washed away, the solar panels with regulator need to be attached and connected, our mattresses that were soaked in salt water need to be washed and dried, the cleaning work never ends, clean the waterline from growth, new protection for the dinghy needs to be sewn, etc. etc. The list is and will remain long because new work is added all the time

The engine work has started and they are taking the engine apart almost to molecules and taking it to the workshop where all the parts will be cleaned and checked. They also discover that one of the 4 ”feet” that the engine stands on has broken off. It could have ended really badly so we are grateful.

Today is the time for the next doctor’s appointment. We both have an appointment with a dermatologist. We are very exposed to the sun daily and both have had several sun injuries before. I also had malignant melanoma once many years ago. It was found and removed early so it was nothing dramatic. After that it has been more of a basal cell carcinoma and small sun injuries. Everything is going well and apart from the doctor freezing off some sun injuries, he is most interested in Jan’s nose. And we who thought it was me who had the most injuries. We leave with prescriptions for various penicillins, vitamin E and some cream. He also writes a prescription for penicillin for the rashes I have had repeatedly. It feels good to have filled up the ship’s medicine cabinet a little.

Unfortunately, we will be stuck here for another week, at least. There will be really strong winds coming in and we know that we are safe here. The harbor is in the lee and it is safe. Nice to have a good location but still Sigh. We want to move on now. Many islands in French Polynesia await and then we have five countries we want to visit before we get to Kiribati where we are safe for the hurricane season that starts in October – November. Almost all the boats we meet choose to go down to New Zealand instead during the hurricane season but then we would be stuck there for at least 6 months. We therefore choose a slightly more northern route instead. With places ”much less traveled” Exciting, we think.

Arriving in Tahiti

The anchor is raised and we are prepared to leave Rangiroa. All hatches closed, life jackets on, everything stowed at sea. Now we are excited about how this pass will turn out. Have we calculated correctly on the guestimator with wind and wave factors so that we hit the pass when the water is calmest? We are approaching and it looks fantastically calm. Oh how nice! Yesterday afternoon we sat at the bar at the pass when the current was strongest and then the sea was not at all like now without wildlife.

It’s a fantastically lovely sail. Vilja glides along at about five knots without rolling anything in particular. The day turns into afternoon and then into dusk. The sky delivers a fantastically colourful sight in pink, orange, purple and yellow. It feels good for the night’s session. As usual, I have the first session for seven hours. The wind dies down and turns a bit so I have to adjust the course so that the sails don’t beat so much. We then end up on a collision course with another boat that we will meet in the future. In turns I move back towards the previous course to prevent us from meeting too close. There is a precision between fluttering sails and avoiding a collision. The other boat obviously sees us too but doesn’t seem to change its course at all. We are approaching each other and can now see the lanterns and it will go well. Great.

The rest of the night is calm and the only thing that happens is further course changes to avoid the flutter. It is wearing down the sails a lot and we hope they will hold all the way home to Sweden. Even though we are on the other side of the globe now, we have over half the distance left. We are only halfway across the Pacific Ocean and ahead of us we have the Indian Ocean, which will be treacherous, and we will cross the Atlantic Ocean twice more. Both south of the equator and north of it. Before we reach Europe and the Azores. In a few years.

Morning and we are approaching Tahiti. To get into the anchorage we call out on VHF for permission when we are completely outside. It is a very busy port and we are asked to wait until a ferry has left. Once inside we will have to pass through the airspace to the airport’s conveyor belt so we have to ask for permission here too to pass. There are lots of boats here. Several without owners on board and a few days ago, when it was very windy, 4 boats were adrift. At such times everyone helps with their dinghies to stop the drifting boat from colliding with another boat. This time it apparently went well. We find a place to anchor. Since it is crowded and we have to take into account that the boats spin around their anchor, it takes two unsuccessful attempts before we are satisfied with our position in relation to the nearest boats.

After a good night’s sleep, almost 12 hours, we take the thing into an industrial area here in Papeete. We have to hand in our life raft for service and we hope to be able to buy solar panels to increase our electricity production now that the generator, for a couple of months, is broken again. A new snorkel mask for me will also be bought plus some fishing gear. We manage to pick up most of all the things in a relatively short time. There will be a little walking between shops but we just feel good after all the sitting in the boat.

Tahiti is the main island and Papeete the capital of French Polynesia and really the only ”large” city between South America and New Zealand/Australia. Here the feeling of the tropics is not so great but industries, large cargo ships and a big city feel are instead dominant for better or worse. But it is fascinating that there are coral reefs and colorful fish even in the deepest part of the large harbor. We will stay here for a while and fix a lot of things. Partly installing solar panels, rig check, dentist visit, provisioning, engine service, waiting for packages sent from Sweden and making sure that the boat and equipment are in good condition etc. etc. When we leave French Polynesia we will sail to countries off the beaten track and there we cannot expect to get things done. But before that we have more islands in French Polynesia to visit.

We’re ticking off a lot of things on the list on our first day here. Sooo nice to be able to check them off. Life raft handed in, fishing gear purchased, new snorkel mask purchased. Rig check booked, dentist appointment booked and a lot of laundry done. We’re productive and feeling satisfied. We’re planning to stay here for about 2 weeks and the list of ”must-do things” is long.

We are at an anchorage called ”Airport-anchrage”. Close to the airport but about 20 – 30 minutes by dinghy either into the center of Papeete or to Taina marina because there is a large Carrefour store. Sooo luxurious to be able to shop for real food for the first time in 5 months. In between we have only been able to buy the things that were in the small stores. Not what we wanted but what was available.

Saturday and we’re going to a BBQ party. We’re part of a group called Ocean Posse. There are several hundred boats all over the Caribbean and Pacific that are members. One of them is organizing a BBQ party here in a marina. We go there with Dan and Kelly on Magic. Rum punch is laid out, the grill is lit and the atmosphere is high. We meet many people we know from boats we’ve met since we left Panama. There will be several hours of socializing, good food and laughter. There are a couple of real luxury boats on the dock. The owners, probably multi-billionaires, come to the boats between a couple of weeks and a couple of months a year. A large staff works day in and day out to keep the boat shiny and clean. It’s polished, waxed, cleaned and washed so that everything is perfect when the owners come to their boat. Of course it would be fun to experience such luxury for a week, but we prefer to sail as we do.

One more thing to check off our list. Jan has brought in two riggers who will go through everything to do with the mast, boom, shrouds and stays. It is important to make sure there is no wear or other defects. We definitely do not want to have a mast break while sailing. Everything looks good but we are advised to buy some spare parts, which we are doing. At least we have come some way with our todo list and it feels great.

Horribel wave hit us

In front of us we see a wall of high and unruly standing waves. It looks wild and scary. The sea is boiling and we have to go through this to get out of the pass from Toau. Help we think… Are we really going to go through this?

Vattnet forsar över oss, in i sittbrunnen, in i Vilja. Sittbrunnen blir totalt full av havsvatten. Tiden stannar. Vad hände? Är vi båda kvar ombord?

We get to the exit and see the boiling and scary sea where we have to go out. It’s going to be dramatic! We’re approaching the wall…and we get to a point where we say ”now we can’t turn around”. So we keep going. A little too far to port. On the starboard side, waves and the current are breaking against shallow water so we don’t want to go too close there either. What if the engine suddenly stops…Then we’re out of here. So we continue forward where we are. It seems to be going well but I shout at Jan to go more to starboard. The waves on our port side are enormous and scary. Then a wave comes…A horrific wave. Seconds before I see it. Standing. It goes straight up in the air and it’s so monstrous. It’s probably 6 meters high in my opinion. Screaming that I don’t want to see…I close my eyes, turn away, cling to myself convulsively and have time to think ”We’re sinking!” The water rushes over us, into the cockpit, into Vilja. The cockpit becomes completely full of seawater. Time stops. What happened? Are we both still on board?

The week on Toau, before this day when we are to leave, is calm and relaxing. The journey into the pass is quite wild but it goes well and the trip between the boomies to the anchorage is short. We are at the buoy for once and don’t have to think about getting caught with the anchor chain in the boomies. It is so nice to lie on the sway, sit in the cockpit and listen to a book or do nothing. Apart from everyday things like cleaning, laundry, cooking and washing dishes, everything by hand. As well as some maintenance of the boat, a job that never ends.

Midsummer Eve we have a BBQ on the beach together with 4 other boats. It is a lovely afternoon and evening with good food, nice company, laughter and swimming. When it starts to get dark we put on a lot of coconuts so that the fire becomes big and orange. There is something magical about fire that makes you feel paralyzed. Before we go back to our boats we make sure that everything is extinguished so we can leave with a clear conscience.

We choose to stay for a week and in that time we have time for a nice evening with games on board the boat Magic and another bbq on the beach. By then the Swedish boat Angelina has also caught up with us. The last time we saw each other was in the Marquesas almost 2 months ago. But now it is time to leave and we release the moorings from the buoy. Without knowing what lies ahead.

The wave…how did it go with us and Vilja?

Tittar in o ser ett stort kaos. Jag tittar in i akterkojen.

Seconds after we went right through this monstrous wave we are still on the right keel. We and everything on board is drenched. Vilja went right through, shook and heeled badly but stayed on the right keel. We look at each other. Silent. Shocked. I look at the floor in the cockpit and there is a lot of water. What does it look like inside the boat? I look in and see a lot of chaos. We have seaworthy but did not expect this. Not going right through a massive giant wave. Inside Vilja everything is in a mess. The kitchen is drenched, things are rolling around on the floor, wine bottles and crockery have been smashed. I look into the aft berth. A window facing the cockpit is open so I am terrified of what will meet us inside.

Genomvått…totalt indränkt i väldigt salt havsvatten. Allt. Powerbanks o kablar simmar i vatten.

Soaked…totally soaked in very salty seawater. Everything. Power banks and cables are swimming in water. Our approximately 20 cm thick memory foam mattresses are soaked as well as clothes and of course bedding. All you have to do is roll up your sleeves (not literally, though, as I’m only wearing a bikini) and start lifting out. Everything loose is picked out. What can be saved is put to dry and all wet textiles are taken out into the cockpit. If it’s left there, mold will grow and everything will be constantly damp. Salt is not kind to either the interior or everything we stowed under the berth. The thick mattresses are lifted up standing up as we can’t store them on deck. A lot of work awaits us, but that will have to be done when we anchor in the next atoll. Now we have a night shift ahead of us and have to concentrate on sailing. The sea is rough and we are busy looking after Vilja. Beloved Vilja who got us through our terrible experience.

A little scary when I sit on guard and see something shining with 2-4 white Lanterns not too far from us on the starboard side. Not visible on either AIS or Marine traffic. Probably a fishing vessel. In these waters they can have many hundreds of meters of nets hanging behind them. Maybe up to a kilometer. Oh we don’t want to get caught in that. Enough drama today I would say. Hope they had called us out on VHF if we were too close.

The night goes by but we both have a bad sleep. Will rolls from side to side and it is almost impossible to sleep. We are probably both a little scared after the wave that hit us. We don’t even want to think about what could have happened. We had been crushed and torn apart by all the sharp corals on the reef and then probably followed the outgoing current out into the open sea. Without the slightest hint of land recognition. Large sharks, barracudas and other sea animals would have probably found us before any human could possibly see us.

Vågar vi gå in? Vilken lycka!

A few hours into the day we approach the next pass. Now we are going into the Rangiroa atoll. Just before we get there a storm comes over us. The sea becomes grey and wild and the rain pours down – almost horizontally. It is not possible to take shelter in the cockpit so we get soaked once again. We see the rather narrow pass and it looks cruel and wild. Do we dare to go in? We are still shocked after the last pass. The slack water – when it is calmest to go in – is in about 1 hour so we circle around a bit. After half an hour we decide to give it a try. On the outside of the pass there is a dive boat and when we ask him he shows us the best way in and gives us the go-ahead that it is ok. These boat drivers know everything about the passes as they go through several times every day with diving enthusiasts who dive in the currents. A little nervous we head inwards. And it goes great! The pass called Tiputa Pass is famous for its bottlenose dolphins that love to jump in the waves. There are about 30 individuals that have even been given names. We see some swimming and suddenly a dolphin about 3.5 meters big jumps high up in front of Vilja and soon after another one. They land with a loud splash. What luck!

Here we are now well anchored. Our friends from Magic are also here and we meet one afternoon at a bar by the pass. The waves are high and several tourists are out with guide boats to experience the strong currents and a hope of seeing jumping dolphins. Tourists also gather at the bar to get a glimpse of what we literally experienced when we entered the pass.

Many hours are spent restoring Vilja after the chaos on board. At least 13 buckets of salt-soaked laundry are washed and rinsed and hung up on deck over a few days of work. Everything we stowed under the aft berth is taken out and washed to get rid of all the salt. And there is a lot of it, especially food. The mattresses will have to wait until Tahiti where we plan to soak them in fresh water with the hope that they will be usable again. Until then, they will have to stand upright. Luckily it is not warmer than a good 30 degrees – then it would have been tough to work. Now the work we can finish. The mattresses are still there. Hopefully we will not have to buy new ones, but the future will tell.

Även luckan från sittbrunnen in i båten.

We reflect on what we learned from our experience. We left the session a little too early, about half an hour, as we had a tight margin to make it to the only slack water in the next session the next day. We shouldn’t have done that in hindsight. Even though we left early, we had to propel with the engine to make it, but then we would have had to propel with the engine even more. We have also learned to close the window to the aft berth when we have tougher conditions. Also the hatch from the cockpit into the boat. We had a flap up there that saved us this time. The sea stowage was probably enough – we were exposed to extreme forces in this single wave that hit us. Going through these sessions can really be a challenge and the conversations between us sailors always end up on how easy or difficult it was. And some sessions are significantly worse than others.

Huvudön i Franska Polynesien.

Sitting alone in the cockpit with a glass of ice-cold cola and listening to a book. Jan has gone for a walk with Kelly and Dan on Magic. We are anchored outside a small village on the Rangiroa atoll. On the beach is a luxury resort with bungalows along the beach, all with sea views. In addition, there are about 9 bungalows on stilts out in the water. We will stay here for a few more days. But instead of going to the Tikehau atoll, we will go directly to Tahiti. The main island in French Polynesia.

Time for the paradise Tuamotus

Wow, what speed we have! The wind is 10 – 12 m/s and we are sometimes up to over 8 knots. I am on night watch and the genoa is completely torn, only a small triangle left. The wind came suddenly about 1 hour ago without warning. No squalls nearby and no strong winds in the weather forecast. Freezing for the first time in a very long time. I have three layers of clothes on top and 2 on the bottom but I still think it is cold. Must be below 27 degrees Celsius.

We have left the Marquesas and are heading towards the Tuamotus archipelago, which is on the way to Tahiti. At Hiva Oa, several of the one-man boats had arrived who are sailing the ”Global solo Challenge” race with tiny mini boats around the world, only 5 meters long. What an achievement! Jan feels a little tempted but not me. Talk about living with little resources.

Sunsets on open sea are magic

Now we have been sailing for about 4 days and we are approaching the entrance to our first atoll, Raroia, and it feels very nervous. We are 3 boats waiting for the right moment, so-called slack water. That is exactly when the water turns from high tide to low tide and when the flow of water changes and it ”stops” a bit. This time from rushing into the atoll at 4 knots to rushing out. For a little while it is calm (read boiling and wild) then rushing at several knots. This collides at the same time with wind and waves that are outside the atoll plus the new water that wants to enter so the water really boils in the entrance.

Many people ask us what an atoll is. It is one or more coral islands or reefs that form a partially or completely closed ring with a lagoon in the middle. In the lagoon we are heading into, there is a small opening and the conditions are very special compared to the open ocean.

Messenger_creation_9A7E32B8-538A-4DEB-B39E-E1B039823C35
This is what an antoll look like. Coralislands in a cirkle with or without palmtrees and on some atolls there are 1 or more small openings.

Once inside, we will wind our way between hundreds of boomies, coral pillars that stick straight up from the bottom to the surface of the water. Often from more than 20 meters deep. We don’t want to bump into them. Partly because they can make holes in the hull and also because they get damaged.

Messenger_creation_2BDCD966-CC1D-4FCB-8ADA-AAF81B702B67
This is what the boomies looks like. Corals rising from the bortom and often high up to waterlevel or just beneath. Very dangerous for the boat

It is an exciting and new experience to move between all these ”boomies” for over two hours. On our phone we have an app downloaded with satellite images and it is surprisingly accurate. It is easy to see the boomies when we know where to look for them. I sit in the bow and watch while Jan sits in the back and steers. We reach the anchorage and drop our anchor. In the Marquesas we spun around the anchor several times every day because of all the downwinds and calm because of the high mountains. Here there is a steady wind from different degrees of east.

Lulu is already at anchor and it’s great to meet them again. We don’t have that many sailboats in this part of the world. So meeting friends is of course fun. Here in the northeastern part of the atoll it’s wonderful! Crystal clear water…again, calm seas so that Vilja doesn’t roll from side to side and we are surrounded by small coral islands that are filled with palm trees.

A Tropical paradise

We go out with the dinghy to find a place to have a BBQ on the beach. After a while we find the perfect spot. Lulu joins in and the next day we meet there in the afternoon. The fire is started with withered palm leaves and dry coconuts and it goes really well. I would have liked to have a big bonfire but we choose a smaller one because it is easier to grill. Right at the water’s edge, the first reef shark appears. It swims only a few meters from our feet which are buried in the sand. After the first one, many more come and for many hours we have the company of at least 6 adult reef sharks and also countless smaller ones of different sizes. The smallest ones are so small that they are almost transparent. It is a fantastic experience to have them so close. We feed them both potatoes and bones from meat and they are absolutely overjoyed with both. When the meat bones land in the water only 1 meter away, they come in 1 second and splash around in the water. Soooo cool experience.

At least 5 reef sharks swim around Vilja every day. It feels a bit nerve-wracking to go in and swim and to clean the hull around the entire boat with the reef sharks only a few meters away. But they are supposed to be completely harmless to us humans.

We stay at the first anchorage for about 1 week and have now arrived at the small anchorage ”Single Mom”. It is easy to understand how the name came about. On the island only one large palm tree and one small palm tree grow. Although I would now call the small palm tree a teenager instead of a small child. It has grown a lot.

We could live this life for an indefinite time to come. The Tuamotus are truly a paradise. And we have still only reached one of the atolls. It is so fascinating that French Polynesia, which is one and the same country, is so completely different in its different island groups. The Marquesas, where we first visited, has high, green-clad dramatic mountains that plunge right into the sea, and here on the Toamotus, there are only partially palm-covered coral atolls that are a maximum of a couple of meters high.

New day and new anchorage just a little south of the previous one. This one is called Kon-Tiki because Thor Heyerdahl and his crew, including Bengt Danie from Sweden, stranded here after 101 days at sea on the balsa raft Kon-Tiki. It must have been a tough journey with both storms and calms and hardly any food or water. The journey was made in 1947 and Thor Heyerdahl wanted to prove that people could get here to Polynesia from the east because winds, waves and currents come from there. A film was made about his journey and it won an Oscar.

This anchorage is also wonderful with its turquoise water and beautiful views. We get good contact with the other boats here and we all gather for a ”sundowner” aboard the boat Carosy from Canada. A large catamaran with a huge seating area on the roof, the boat’s third floor. Here we also meet the Swedish boat Zedna and we are both surprised at how relatively many Swedish (and also Norwegian and Danish) sailboats there are in this part of the world. Countries with small populations and as far away as you can get from Scandinavia.

And we found this beautiful thing…from an octopus?

The next day we take the dinghy to the island where Kon-Tiki ran aground. His survivors have made a memorial of stones in the middle of the island. As a half-Norwegian, it feels powerful to come to this place with the wings of history. The island is, as I said, small and we walk around it in only a few minutes. It is inhabited by hundreds of small white and black birds that don’t really like us coming there to visit. It is also possible that we are disturbing them in the middle of the breeding season.

The plan was to stay a few more days but it will start to blow a little more the day after tomorrow so we decide to take a 24-hour sail to the next atoll early tomorrow so we arrive before the wind picks up. We look forward to continuing to discover the different atolls that we have the opportunity to go into.

Living fultime in a boat

For those of you wondering. How does it really work to live full-time in a small sailboat? Sure, in Bohuslän, Vilja, a Malö 43 with its more than 13 meters from bow to stern, is huge compared to most other sailboats. But she is very small compared to living in an apartment or house. And as soon as you get down to Europe or further afield, Vilja belongs to the smaller boats. Around 50 feet is common, and often more modern boats with a completely different layout for space. It is even more common with catamarans. Boats with two large hulls at least almost as big as Vilja’s each and all the space in between. A catamaran is like an apartment or house with 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a large kitchen and living room in an open plan, a huge aft deck and also a large foredeck. Of course we get a little jealous when we get on board these boats. But… Vilja is unusually beautiful, solid, well-built and has fantastic beautiful lines.

The layout of Vilja is a foredeck with space for 2 to sleep with an associated small toilet area with shower. Then comes the salon with a sofa group to port (left) that can be made into one or two beds. On the starboard side (right) there is a sofa/bed. When we come down the stairs into the salon, there is a kitchen on the port side. Stove with 2 hotplates, small oven, sink and two small refrigerators with a door from the top. On the starboard side there is a navigation table and another toilet area. Aft of the kitchen, under the cockpit there is a small aft berth with 2 sleeping places, if you like each other.

The cockpit – where we spend almost all time awake
This is what it looks like with 4 people living onboard

We have both lived on our own boats for several years, all the years before we set off on this long-distance sailing. What it is like to live on a boat all year round in Sweden will be another post.

The biggest difference between living full-time on a boat and vacationing on a boat, even if it’s for large parts of the summer. Is that this is our home. We currently do not have access to an apartment or a house that is our primary home. The boat is not just a summer home.  Here we have pretty much everything we own and have. Both personal and practical. Here we have our food, our clothes, souvenirs and everything necessary for the kitchen and hygiene, repairs, projects, etc. etc.

It is also a very small home so things really have to work. All things are well chosen and have their designated place. Where they are placed back immediately after use. It is even so detailed that the ketchup bottle, olive oil and everything else in the cupboards where we keep food has its special place. It makes it easier when everything is packed tightly. When we are out sailing or making a long crossing this makes it easier when the conditions for cooking can be extreme and difficult. In addition, nothing is standing and banging against each other if we have it packed tightly. I particularly care about the kitchen, the food and the ”linen store” while Jan has better control over tools and spare parts etc. When you come to Vilja you come to our home so it is not the same as a two-week sailing together. For us this is a big difference, especially for me. But we are just as happy to visit here as you are to your house or apartment.

Since it is our home, there are other things that are important compared to if it is ”only” a sailboat for vacation. We have the luxury of having a freezer, refrigerator, watermaker and Wifi on board. All of these things use electricity. But we prefer to use extra electricity (which we get from our diesel generator) to be able to keep these things running that add a golden edge to life. An ice cube in the drink means an incredible amount in the heat.

Living on a boat can sound absolutely wonderful when you think of sun, summer, sea and vacation. Imagine always having it like that! But that’s not the whole truth. Especially not autumn and winter in Sweden. The rain can pour down for several days and everything gets wet or at least damp even in warmer countries. There can be storms even in port and we have to secure moorings, the anchor, sails and everything else loose on board. But it can also be cozy to sit inside the boat and hear the rain patter on the roof of the ruff. At least if we are lying still and don’t have to be out sailing the boat.

When it’s raining we sometimes sit inside the boat

Storage for everything we have is limited. It is in cabinets, especially under and behind sofas and beds. It is often the case that we have to move five, ten or even more things to get to the thing we need. We also have to remember where we have put that particular spice, that tool or that particular gadget we need right here and now. Beds have to be made and mattresses moved, things that are tied down have to be untied and moved around and the refrigerator has to be largely emptied so that we can get hold of, for example, a packet of butter. So time and patience are needed.

When looking for something or finding space for more things it can look like this
We also use the small space under the floor to store things
We often find ourselves in ”holes” repairing or looking for something

However, the surfaces to clean are not that big. Of course it gets extra dirty and even when cleaning a lot has to be moved, but the floor area at Vilja is a maximum of 8 – 10 square meters. Here in the heat, mold quickly forms in cupboards and in tight spaces, so there is constant washing and airing to avoid it.

It is also very cramped and intimate. We have to move around each other when we are moving around inside the boat if we are there at the same time. The toilets are only half a meter from the kitchen, bedroom and salon. Understandably, we don’t have much personal space and personal time is a luxury. Here we are usually only a few meters away from each other 24/7.

In hot countries it often gets very hot inside. Sometimes over 50 degrees. Then it is heavy and hot to do the slightest thing and sleeping is often difficult. It is as hot inside the boat as the sea is warm at night, you could say, just over 30 degrees. Luckily we each have a fan which makes it easier to sleep.

Here it’s ”only” 38.7 degrees

Cooking on a boat, even when it is stationary, is a challenge. The work surfaces are on top of the fridge and stove. So when something needs to be picked up, food, bowls, cutting boards, etc. that have been picked up have to be moved. And sometimes there is no place to put it except perhaps in the nearest bed. The spice cabinet is deep and of course the spice you want is at the back, so you just have to empty the cabinet to look. The stove has at least two hotplates so you can cook two things at the same time. And that is a luxury. There is an oven but an Omnia is usually used instead. A kind of oven that we place on top of one of the hotplates in the gas stove. There is of course no dishwasher and neither is hot water, it has to be heated on the stove in that case. Most of the time we have limited water so we wash dishes very sparingly. Running water does not exist in our world and we rinse the dishes, which have been washed by hand, with a spray bottle so that we do not use too much water. That works.

Sometimes we have a bbq on the beach instead of cooking onboard
If we are lucky we can buy cheap langusters

When it comes to hygiene, we almost always shower on the aft deck. We still have a shortage of water, so we collect rainwater in buckets and pour it into a garden sprinkler. So a shower with hair washing probably uses a maximum of 3 liters of water. The same goes for washing clothes and household laundry. We wash with rainwater on the aft deck and then hang it to air and sun dry. Sometimes it rains heavily so the laundry gets one or two extra rinses. Wet laundry cannot be taken into the boat because then everything gets damp. So it simply has to hang outside until it dries.

We are self-sufficient in terms of producing electricity and water. The main source of energy is 6 large solar panels, but we also have a diesel generator that is needed when it is rainy or cloudy. In addition to this, we also have a small wind generator that produces some electricity when it is windy. For fresh water, we have a watermaker. It turns salt water into fresh water. Since we do not have much water, we are very careful about how we use water.

Despite the simplicity and spartan nature compared to a house or apartment, we love living in this mobile home. Living on a boat means we have the luxury of always having a sea view from our home. No matter which way we look. The spectacle of the sea and sky is always present and we take a swim in the sea almost whenever we want. We can get to all corners of the world as long as they are by the water. This nomadic life that we have chosen to live is fantastic as we get to experience so much. Right now on the great seas.

It’s a tuff life

In a later post I will write more about what it’s like to live on board the boat when we are out on longer sailings, sometimes a few days but up to a month…and…are we on vacation the whole time?
