We call on the VHF for a water taxi that will come and pick us up soon. Once ashore, we are met by multitudes of sea lions and Galapagos iguanas. They really are everywhere! Swimming in the water, on benches, stairs, in boats, the paths we walk on and on the docks. They are totally unafraid of us humans and know that we do them no harm. Here, it is the animals who get to take their place and we get to arrange ourselves after them. The sea lions are heard loud and clear when they call and several are active in the water. But many are lazing in the shade. A sea lion we see is doing everything it can to kill a blowfish that has blown itself up into a ball, the size of a tennis ball.

The iguanas are marine iguanas endemic to the Galapagos, just like most of the animals here. They are good swimmers and live on, above all, algae that they find in the sea. When they are on land, they mostly lie down and laze right in front of our feet. So we have to see where we put our feet.
And of course leguan

The port is a bit away from the town and we walk towards the small village. The landscape is black with lava but with lots of greenery. Isabella is supposed to be about 1 million years old, so this is where the greenery has settled, at least on the southern side of the island where the rain comes. There are five volcanoes on the island, all more or less active. The last eruption was in 2021. The village is sleepy in a charming way with streets of sand and several restaurants and cool bars along the beach. Here we have a drink at sunset and enjoy the atmosphere.

Underbart! Jag njuter!
Sitting on board Vilja all alone and enjoying. It’s fun with friends on board, but it’s also crowded. And getting alone time is really appreciated and much needed. A little nail care, shower, listen to a book, etc. Wonderfully! I enjoy!
Meanwhile, Jan, Marie and Niklas are on an excursion. They go to something called Túneles. A natural lava labyrinth system that looks like tunnels. The water is really clear and they get to swim with big turtles. While snorkeling, they also see seahorses and unique Galapagos sharks that can lie still on the bottom and rest without being in constant motion, which most sharks need. A really good excursion if you like snorkeling.

New day and new excursion, only half day today. We go into the harbor and while we wait for the boat and guide we are entertained by a very cute little guinea pig that swims around the harbor. The boat takes us to the lava island of Tintoreras. On the way there, we make a stop where we come very close to several penguins. Oh, how cute the penguins are. Several are standing guard and don’t care in the least that we are very close. A few others swim around the boat.
Three lovely penguins
The penguins are sooo cute

Soon after, we come to the highlight, the Bluefooted Boobies! There is a whole small colony of the seabird ”Blue-footed soles”. The color of their feet they get from the herring they eat. Which in turn eats a special kind of algae that gives the color. The tour ends with a hike where we see loads of iguanas building nests to lay their eggs in. Their egg laying period has just started so we are lucky to get here before they close the island to visitors.

Everyday life also continues on board. We cook, wash clothes, fix small fixes and bigger fixes, etc. Although we live in paradise, it is necessary

The days on Isabella are over and now we are sailing towards the next island – Floreana. A small island with only 200 inhabitants. The sun is shining, the sea is deep blue and the sky is light blue with occasional white clouds
Oooooh, what a lovely and pleasant sailing we have now! The wind is also almost directly astern and it only goes at about three knots. But Vilja slides forward, there are no waves and she does not lean. After almost only sailing in rough seas or motoring since we left Cartagena, this is absolutely lovely! In addition, the sun is shining and it is a pleasant temperature just above thirty degrees. Not forty-five, as before, when the sweat was pouring and we could hardly do anything at all.
Sailing can bereally lovely
We have left Panama City after six nights there and are now heading for the Las Perlas archipelago. It will be nice to get out to the islands again after over ten days either on the road, in port or through the canal. We also had time to celebrate Christmas and New Year and our 3rd anniversary
As we approach, we see some dolphins swimming around, jumping and playing not too far from Vilja. Soon after, we enter boiling water. It is both current and the tide is rising. In the Caribbean there was hardly any tide, just like up in Scandinavia, but here there is a 4 – 5 meter difference. Something we need to think about both when we go close to the beach and at anchor. Close to the beach, the ground that is visible at low tide is totally out of sight at high tide. And when anchoring when we want at least 3-4 times the depth outside, on our anchor chain, so we have to count on the depth at high tide.
A really nice anchorage
We are located in the strait between the northern islands of Isla Chapera and Isla Mogo Mogo. Here are three other boats besides us. Since we got here, Vilja has turned around 180 degrees so we are exactly the opposite of where we were when we got here. We haven’t launched the dinghy yet, but that will be tomorrow. We were up early today to get going just after dawn so we didn’t risk adding in the dark yet again. Now the food is on the stove. Today it will be meatballs with potatoes, chanterelle sauce and lingonberry jam. Incredibly luxurious in the world we live in far from Swedish food products. It feels cool now, almost a little chilly. I have put on thin pants and a long-sleeved top. Looking at the thermometer out in the cockpit. It shows 27.8 degrees….Everything is relative. We have been living in an enormous heat with over 40 degrees so this feels great.
We enjoy a lovely sunset onboard
We sit out front on the deck in the afternoon with wine and snacks. Around us, the sea is churning with currents and tides. It is such a soothing and wonderful sound. Six other sailboats are located here. All the others have the bow to the wind, while we are completely opposite. We are thinking about the reason…five of the others are catamarans and move differently while the only other monohull is a little further from the strait, that must be the reason. Vilja lies with the bow against the current while the others lie with the bow against the wind. Nice that there is a fan in the cockpit for the unusual sake.
Wine with snacks is really a pleasant time
We really enjoy this
The sky has amazing colours
It’s the weekend and during the day today there have been over ten motorboats here with party-happy and bath-hungry people on board. There has been thump thump music, laughter and shouts. Great now that it’s quiet again and only the clucking can be heard.
Second day with bright sun, not so common here in Panama where there is a lot of rain and thunder. But now it rumbles properly and over the mountains in mainland Panama are pitch black clouds. Think they will come out here to us during the evening and night. So it’s best to take care and enjoy until then
The sun was still shining on one side of the boat when the rain came
And a lovely rainbow appeared on the other side
We have worked a lot with and on the boat in recent days. Cleaning and clearing, as usual. I’m going crazy for not having order in the boat with everything in its place. Jan has started to replace the wooden plugs in the teak deck and yesterday we glued rubber grips and handles on the dinghy that came off a long time ago. Covers for cockpit cushions and seat cushions have been washed, the outside has been washed again from algae growth. The blog and photos take time and we have, unfortunately, discovered small bugs in some of our flour, lentil and bean bags. So now we have gone through each bag thoroughly, thrown a lot into the sea, washed out of cupboards and bags, sprayed, etc. So now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that we got rid of it. Careful supervision in the future and some lockers in other parts of the boat must be checked. So everything is not paradise all the time but it is a lot of work.
Here we work on the dinghy.
And now it’s time to work with the toilet
We look through very single bag with food caeully and also spray it on the outside
We stay here and enjoy. Today is four days since we arrived here at Mogo Mogo. We take the dinghy into the beach on the island of Chapera. Fits in now that we have the island all to ourselves. It’s a bit of a Robinson Crusoe life. We continue with the dinghy to the island of Mogo Mogo. What a beautiful place! Here I take the opportunity to bathe in. the emerald sea. There is no wind and no current in the SW-facing bay. Sooo lovely!
We are taking the dinghy first to Chapera
Here we walk in the sand
The weather is fantastic
And the water emeraldcoloured and crystal clear
A perfekt life
I bet everyone can guess what Jan is looking at

It is quite early in the morning and we head off towards the island of Pedro Gonzales, further south. Suddenly we are surrounded by a pod of dolphins, one of which is a mother with a child. What happiness! They swim with us and play around Vilja. Wonder if they are aware we are watching them? Dolphins around the boat are among the most wonderful things there is. We drop everything we have in our hands and enjoy the view. Lucky we have an autopilot to steer for us

So luxurious with a day total vacation. Just relax, swim, listen to a book, enjoy the view and swim in the pool! We have arrived at the private island of San José and in one of the bays is a resort where we are welcome to enjoy all the facilities. Of course we paid 10 dollars each but are welcome back. The view is strikingly beautiful and the hot tub so invitingly lovely. We don’t treat ourselves to many things in our still privileged life but today we enjoy this luxury. Sparkling sea as far as the eye can see, palm trees in the foreground, an infinity pool, wine in the glass, two Toucans and colorful parrots flying above us. Can’t say anything other than that life is wonderful
The view from the Hotel is stunning

It’s getting dark and the Swedish sailboat, Kerpa from Stockholm, is heading into the bay. We met in Guna Yala and now we meet again. They come over to our place for a gin & tonic at sunset and we hang out for a couple of hours before we both have to cook for today’s dinner. We also meet the next day and now we go to the resort and enjoy the jacuzzi together. Tomorrow they start their sail towards the Marquesas, a good month’s sail without seeing either land or probably no boat.
Kerpa with Kerstin and Paul are coming to our bay
We ourselves choose to stay for a few days. We are not in a hurry and there are several beaches to explore. I am fascinated by the colors of the sand and the crabs burrowing into the sand to hide. Here is not as amazing as in Guna Yala but it has its charm. And it is much quieter. Right now we think there are only 4 – 5 sailboats in total in the whole of Las Perlas. The water is clear and desalicizing, a little colder than in the Caribbean, the beaches are chalk white and almost completely free of bloated rubbish and it is wonderful to sometimes be alone on an entire island.
One of all the beaches
It’s so calming
The tiny crabs dig hole and through out the sand. It’s a beautiful pattern
And the pattern with black and light sand is also beautiful
Out there is Vilja and you see one of all special rocks hete in the bay
It looks like a man from both sides. One facing left with a strange thing on his head. And one with head and full body facing right
At the front of the deck, it’s a nice breeze, around us a lot of fish are splashing in the water’s edge. We take the dinghy in to the beautiful little islands that are so small that we walk around them in a few minutes with our toes in the white sand at the water’s edge. Not many people live on the islands we have visited so far. The first group of islands we add is called Chichime cays with the small islands Uchtupu Pipigua and Uchutupu Dummat. Sounds so exotic, and it is.

Here we meet Porrima with Peter and crew. Nice that our paths cross again and we decide that we will go on to the same island tomorrow as well.
Vilja leaves first and arrives at the ”Swimming pool” at the island of Banderup in the eastern Holandes cays after about three hours. Another romantic paradise. Here is a small archipelago of picturesque cays like everywhere in Guna Yala. We drop the anchor and get a good hold straight away. After a hop-on hop-off, we go in with the dinghy to some of the small cays that surround us. It is so fascinating that so many palm trees grow and there are also small houses on these cays which are only a couple of meters higher than the sea. We wonder what happens when there are storms. A year ago there were almost no houses, bars or restaurants here, but it was more authentic. Now the GunaYala Indians have realized that, especially those who are out on chartered boats for a couple of days, desire this luxury. We think it’s a shame, it would have been fun to experience this area ten years ago.

Porrima arrives a few hours after us and in the evening we are invited to the restaurant. We enjoy grilled lobster and then we end up in the middle of a party with young people from other boats. It will be a long time before we break off and make our way back to our boats in the dark.
The next day and we wave goodbye to Porrima, who will move on. We ourselves stay and enjoy the sun, the breeze and the thirty-degree crystal clear water. It’s warm in the air so it feels wonderful to spend a lot of time in the sea and cool off. All around us there are fantastic reefs to snorkel at but Jan has a bit of a problem with his ears and I don’t feel comfortable snorkelling so unfortunately we don’t get to discover this amazing underwater world with its incredible wealth of corals, turtles and colorful fish
Can you ever get tired of palmtrees?
The cays are different but all with white sand and palmtrees
It’s sooo beautiful

We are now at some real paradise islands, Coco Bandero. Three small cays covered in coconut palms with white sandy beaches all around. It is a paradise. Again. Like out of a fairy tale. The image of the Garden of Eden. The wind blows lightly and the palm crowns rustle. The leaves shift in shades of green and then towards yellow and finally orange. Some stand straight and stately, while others gently bend over the sparkling turquoise sea. It is an amazing sight to behold.

We have just bought two large crawfish from a Guna Yala Indian. They are in a span of salt water here in the boat now. So tonight will be a luxury dinner. None of us are experienced with cooking/grilling lobster, but today we will try. They are large, probably 1.5 kilos each and cost about SEK 100 each. Sooo looking forward to dinner. We feel mean when we push the crawfish into the boiling water. It’s cruel, but hopefully it will pass quickly before they stop suffering. We then gratinate them with garlic, butter and parmesan. Oooooh sooooo good! A bottle of cold white wine with this and we feel like we’re in heaven.
The GunaYala-indian who sold us langusters
Here they are in a bucket of salt water
The first one goes in to the boiling water
Boiled and ready to be gratinated
A lovely dinner
Today we wake up to torrential rain, thunder and lightning. The wind has picked up so the anchor chain is stretched. Several boats leave for new destinations but we choose to stay. We want to stay here for several days and nights. Hopefully it clears up so we can take the dinghy into the three small cays that surround us.
Dark sky over the turquoise water
The weather is slowly getting better
We take the dinghy to another cay
Park it on the sand
Some flowers are growing here
Some more palmtrees
Enjoying the view
Unfortunately, our plans have changed. Our watermaker still doesn’t work and we’re running out of water, even though we’re stingy. Today we therefore go to another cay to sail tomorrow to Linton Bay where a mechanic will meet us. It’s not just the watermaker that has problems. It smells like diesel from the generator so there may be a leak there, the radar doesn’t work either and yesterday we discovered that we probably got a mouse on board. A bag of pangco in a stowage compartment was gnawed on and there were some mouse droppings in there. It must have come aboard in Shelter bay a week ago. So now we have a pet 😒. Would have preferred a dog too.
The sun is shining and the waves are high as we sail about 43 nm back towards Linton Bay today. Away from Guna Yala and its paradise islands. We have to go there to hopefully fix the watermaker. The original problem with the pump is solved as we bought a new one and installed it, but now it leaks at the pump instead. The watermaker has been our constant problem ever since we left Gran Canaria almost two years ago. When one problem is solved, a new one comes.
Under sail back to Linton Bay
The waves are high but it’s difficult to catch on photo
Captain Jan enjoying life
The sailing to Linton Bay is bouncy and murky. There are 3 – 4 meter high waves and we are happy that we have properly stowed away. The trip takes about eight hours and we anchor in the bay outside the marina. Now we hope that everything will be resolved tomorrow. Sailors’ lives are not just sun, swimming and enjoyment. There is a lot that needs to be maintained and a lot that breaks. Could easily write a whole post about it, or maybe even a whole book.
We have been back in Cartagena for about a week. Cartagena – Club de Pesca. It’s so hot here, so unbelievably hot…We haven’t had any flow on the jetty mostly since Thursday. It is now Monday afternoon. The sweat runs down the body and the salt stings the eyes and wounds on the body. We change clothes 3-4 times a day as the ones we wear get soaked. Inside the boat it is around 36 degrees warm and outside even warmer. No gust of wind. We have fans and that helps but is definitely not enough. Right now I would like to experience minus 25 degrees – at least for a quarter of an hour. We buy cans of drinking water and they quickly run out. Cola as well. The work ethic is not great. There is simply nothing that can be done. The heat takes a toll on us during the day. Luckily, we had electricity at night. Our AC is set to 19 degrees, but it’s still just under 30 degrees at night. The sea warms from below and the air from above.
Vilja full of laundry to get dry
This is how they lift up the boats so it does not grow under waterline
Our pier in Club de Pesca where we have been since end may during hurricane season
One evening we had a get together with other sailors
A peaceful scenery in the district Manga where we stay
When the tide is high the waters covers the streets
And leaves a lot of rubbish on the streets when it’s going down again
Atlanten tog 19 dagar.
A few days later. From the heat to torrential rain and coolness. Now we only have 26.4 degrees inside the boat….with air conditioner at 17 degrees. It’s cool and nice and we can work a little bit. The electrical cabinet is fixed after there was a fire there due to the bow thruster in May and some cabinets are sorted. We really try to use every cm in the boat for food and practical things. All colanders are opened side by side so we can place coffee, oatmeal, jam or flour under etc. Everything is expensive in the Pacific so we stock up. Our guests for the first 3 months across the Pacific, Marie and Niklas, have bought tickets now. They will arrive in Panama on January 27. We have also started stocking up for the time they are with us. First about 7 days to the Galapagos. And we hope the authorities will let us in there….there are strict rules. Then about 4-5 weeks out on the open sea before we arrive at the Marquesas in French Polynesia. It will definitely be the longest distance at sea without land contact. Over 30 days. The Atlantic took 19 days.
We can’t use this toilet anymore because of all drink we have bought
Pacific – Stilla Havet. O det vattnet skall vi segla över…
Pacific is sooooo big. You can’t even imagine it. The Atlantic becomes almost like Mediterranean in comparison. We are used to seeing a map with the Atlantic a little to the left and then America and Europe, Asia and Africa. If we turn the globe over, there is almost only water. Pacific – Pacific Ocean. O that water we shall sail across…
It’s Impossible to imagine the size of The Pacific
Karneval!
Carnival! Or actually a festival that feels like a carnival. Cartagena celebrates Independence and they do it big in the four days. Today is the first day and there is a carnival train on Pencer boulevard which is close to the old part of town. People flock there and the congestion is great. Most of them are armed with a large pipe where they spray foam at each other. There is dancing, laughing and spraying foam everywhere. Around the feet, they pop firecrackers and we only have feet in sandals and flip-flops. We’re all a little afraid of getting firecrackers thrown at us. At the same time, the carnival procession is going on with large dancing groups in beautiful clothes. And beautiful exotic women in amazing carnival costumes. We have managed to get a seat close to the judges so we get to see their dance properly. It’s a party, it’s joy, it’s colorful and it’s dancing! All of Cartagena bursts with excitement, mischief and rhythm. We are showered with foam several times and share the rush of joy with everyone else.
Party, party, party!
Everyone is dancing
We are close to the judges so we can see all performances

We enjoyed the carnival at least three hours
And, of course a beautiful girl
a woman dressed up with a really big bum
Now it’s the next day of the celebration and hundreds, maybe thousands of boats are gathering in long lines behind barriers. A large stage is built and directed towards the sea. There are big movie screens like at big concerts. We take our dinghy and paddle out together with Peter from the boat Porrima. Since we are such a small boat, we decide to paddle in front of all the other boats and lay right in front of the stage. We are met by waves, cheers, cheers and are sprayed with foam by all the happy and party-hungry people in the boats that we paddle in front of. We find a free small hatch and lift up the cordon so we are on the right side. The concert begins and the party is on. On one boat the beer runs out and they ask us if we can paddle ashore with them and buy more. Of course we will help. In the meantime, I remain in the boat we are helping. The artists replace each other and after a few hours one of Colombia’s biggest artists comes on stage. The cheers rise in a crescendo and the joy among everyone knows no bounds. It is a very successful afternoon and evening and we are satisfied when we paddle back.
Peter and Jan paddles our boat to the festivities
There are hundreds or thousands of boats full of people partying
Foam is sprayed on everyone
They loved spraying on us
I got fully sprayed

It’s getting late and we start our way back to the boat
Today we are out sailing! Lovely! The wind is fresh but the sailboat Porrima from Holland with Peter as captain handles the wind and waves excellently. It’s Beneteau 50 Cence. He has bought new sails that have arrived and the standing rig has been replaced, so today it is test sailing with fine tuning. Two knowledgeable people are on board and checking. Everything seems to be fine. We met Porrima in Cuba and have been hanging out since Jamaica. It is wonderful to be out at sea for a couple of hours. It fans and moves. Can’t wait until we leave in about 1 week.
Sailing with the boat Porrima
We really enjoyed coming out on the sea for some hours
The rope from the main sail came loose but nothing bad happened
The man is filming everything to make sure it’s all alright
Provisioning is largely complete. Now all that’s left is fresh food for our first 6 weeks in Panama. Drinks have also been purchased, so now the sink in the front toilet is full.
We are working hard on the boat. Jan outdoors and i indoors. Every cupboard is gone through, food stowed away and in easy-to-access bags, duvet covers washed as well as small seat cushions. Jan washes ropes, fixes outboards that suddenly stopped working, the wind turbin must be in place and much, much more
A rigcheck is done and everything looks good
Jan screwes the new wind turbine together
And now it’s put in place
A seagull gives us company
Of course, we manage to spend a few evenings in the old town – Getsemani too. There we enjoy the atmosphere, the crowds, the performances, the splendor of color and the charm. A place we will miss when we leave Cartagena.
In the old town – Getsemani
People are dancing on the streets
Jan walking around
A performance, the man with big stomach is dancing bellydance and pretending to sing famous songs
Now we fly south. Down to the southernmost corner of Colombia where three countries meet – Colombia, Brazil and Peru. There are no roads here as it is the Amazon rainforest that dominates, far, far around. All transport therefore takes place by boat and a few air connections. The city we fly to is called Leticia
Flying over the Andes
We have landed in Leticia
It is walking distance between these three countries
The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest and covers 7 million km² in a total of 9 countries. From here you can go west towards Peru and Ecuador and east through the whole of Brazil all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
When we get here it is the end of the dry season and the water is as low as it can be. Many small tributaries have dried up and boats and buildings are perched on the large sandbanks. But there is still water in the larger tributaries and we have decided on a three-day trip into the Amazon to a small village located in Peru.
This little river is almost dry now in the end of dry season
Houses are on stilts because on rainy season the water gets much much higher
There are a lot of different kind of fruits
It looks so delicious
And all the lovely colours
There are many kind of bananas and plantain
In the evening there are streetfood everywhere
Now we are waiting, together with our guide Mike, for the boat that will take us from Colombia to our adventure. It is full of life on the river with boats transporting people and goods. On the other side of the water, just a few hundred meters away is Peru. The journey on the brown water takes us about 45 minutes and we have to walk for quite some time in the heat and humidity before we arrive at the village and the house where we will live. It feels exciting and we don’t really know what we’ve gotten ourselves into.
We booked our trip via the travelgency George of the jungle
On the way to our boat. The river does not have a lot of water now so it’s far down
Taking a Coke while we are waiting
It’s a lot of activity by the river
A cute girl waiting for the boat to leave
There are plenty of boats
Soon our boat will come. But we enjoy the atmosphere here by the river
Now we are on the way
Our blue boat
Pouring gasoline by hand to the engine
Houses are on sand instead of in the water now in the dry season
In rainy season the water gets all the way up and even inside the forest
We have reached our village
Some boats are leaking
This is the house where we will stay for 2 nights
Our first day consists of two hikes in the forest. One in the day and one in the dark in the evening. We dress in long pants and long sleeves plus tall rubber boots to protect us from poisonous insects, mosquitoes and snakes. The day before, a tourist stepped on a poisonous snake. It bit him at the top of the boot shaft, so luckily he survived. It crunches underfoot as we walk through the now dry rainforest. It is hard to imagine that there will be water all the way up here in six months. Now it’s terribly hot and we’re dripping with sweat. The clothes are soaked through and the eyes sting from the salty sweat. Mike is amazingly good at finding animals in the forest. Mostly insects. We see large furry tarantulas, black scorpions, monkeys and lots of different birds. He is also knowledgeable about all trees and what they are used for. It is killertree, irontree, rubbertree, etc. Many of the trees are 300 – 400 years old and huge.
The big and old trees. They are up to 400 years old
The Base of the tree is almost like a small house

It’s a lot of termites
We saw scorpions. Here is a black one
And a lot of big tarantellas
Here is Jan investigating the tree
The next day we paddle out with a boat on the Amazon and fish. It is incredibly hot to sit in the scorching sun without shade or the slightest breeze. The fish nibble directly on our bait, but it’s hard to get any fish up as they don’t bite around the small hook. Suddenly it snaps at me and I get a piranha on the hook. It follows up but unfortunately lets go just before it reaches the boat. At least now we have seen a piranha. After three hours Mike has managed to catch four fish and we go back to our village sweaty but satisfied and happy. There we are served a good lunch.
Jan paddling the boat upstream
It is sooo hot in the sun
Unfortunately no piraya on the boat but we were Lucky that Mike caught 4 small fishes
And the fishes was served for lunch together with other delicious things
Hammocks hang under our house and there we recover for a few hours before the afternoon and evening hike. The village is small and simple. There is no electricity here except in the few houses that have a generator or solar panels which they use sparingly. No wifi either. Everyone works all day fishing, hunting, farming or household chores. They live more or less from hand to mouth
The hammocks in the shade wad lovely to rest in
Photo from the small town
Prepairing food. That’s a tuff job in the heat
A women is making roof from palmtree leaves
In the afternoon they played volleyboll. Old and young together
The supermoon wad absolutely fantastic
Put the boots back on and we set off on a long and strenuous hike. These boots are terribly uncomfortable and hard to walk in. But they protect us so we just have to bite the bullet. The goal is a lake in the middle of the jungle. We are tired when we arrive but it is amazingly beautiful! A deep lake surrounded by greenery, water lilies floating on the water with big, big leaves, an incredibly rich birdlife and after a while a magical sunset that changes to a big Supermoon. As soon as darkness falls, the caymans crawl out of their hiding places. Wherever we point the flashlights, their eyes are reflected with a red glow. We’re out paddling and Mike bends down and picks up a small caiman that we get to hold. It’s gaze is completely still, as if paralyzed, when we hold it around its neck and tail with two hands. This excursion is amazing and will be the highlight of your Amazon adventure.
The lake and the environments was so lovely, green and peaceful
The beautiful water lillys with the big leaves
The trees were full of different kind of birds
We saw a lot of Paradisebirds but could not take photos ourselves. So this is a borrowed photo
Jan enjoys being in the middle of the jungle
The sunset wad just amazing
Me holding a cayman
On the third day, I stay in the hammock when Jan and Mike set off on another hike. I can’t bear to walk around in big boots again. My feet are tired after the hike and so am I. They see many monkeys, a sloth and even more insects. Jan is satisfied and happy when he returns.
After lunch we set off back towards Leticia. On the way we see lots of pink dolphins. They don’t swim in packs and play in the water like the Dolphins we see in the ocean. These are blind as the water is so brown and come up only for short moments to get air. The dolphins are born gray and become more and more pink as they get older. Today these Dolphins are unfortunately endangered so it is extra fun to see them. Despite several attempts, none of us manages to capture them in a picture.

And one more borrowed photo
We have one day left in Leticia before flying back to Cartagena and our boat Vilja tomorrow. Then we take the opportunity to make an excursion to the city of Santa Rosa in Peru. It’s a short boat ride across the river and then a tuctuc ride on the sandbars. There are no border controls between Colombia, Peru and Brazil here, just go over. The village is small and charming. We walk around a bit and then sit down at a restaurant where we drink a Caiprinha each and eat a really good lunch. Then we go back to Colombia again. There we stop and watch a ”soccer international” between Peru and Colombia on the grass. There is a lot of audience and it is loved to the fullest
On the way over the small river to Peru
Now we are in Peru, but the land on the other side is Colombia
It’s hard for the tuctuc-driver in the sand.

Back in our room, we use the property’s swimming pool. It feels very luxurious and wonderful to be able to swim again. We haven’t done that since we sailed on the south coast of Cuba last spring.
We had a lovely time in the swimmingpool after our daytrip to Santa Rosa in Peru
Tomorrow we fly back to Cartagena. Now we wait a few weeks with provisions and preparing Vilja so we can sail towards San Blas in Panama.
Medellin – a city that can really send chills down your spine due to its current bloody history! Here, not so long ago, was the Mecca of the illegal cocaine industry with violence and gangster rule. Pablo Escobar ruled and set. It calmed down around the year 2000 after a cartel was blown up but unfortunately resurfaced again. And as recently as 2009, at least nine people were killed a day, and the following year, in 2010, Medellin was the scene of perhaps Colombia’s bloodiest drug war ever. So just fifteen years ago, this was one of the world’s most dangerous cities. Especially the area known as Comuna 13. Today things have settled down and the area is instead a big tourist magnet. This is where we are heading right now.
A photo of the military and gang violince
In the taxi on the way to Comuna 13, we witness a minor collision between two motorcycles. One driver starts kicking and hitting the other who is lying down in the middle of the street. Soon after, he drags him away in his clothes in the street in front of the cars, which have stopped. It looks brutal. Luckily, a car driver intervenes and separates them. And our taxi drives on.
Our guide in Comuna 13 is Daniel, about 40 years old. He was born and raised here. We talk about his upbringing and he gets tears in his eyes when he tells us how many of his friends have been murdered during that bloody time. He is strong and has experienced things no one should have experienced. Daniel also talks about the invisible borders between the six different areas here in Comuna 13. If you stepped over the smallest thing, you were shot. And in a small area that is now a football field, countless people were killed every day. It is unimaginable and so tragic. This is an open place where many people can see from their windows in the houses around. Imagine seeing this killer daily. We walk among graffiti, bars and souvenir shops. The guide greets family and friends all the time. The graffiti, often depicting women, all carry a story and the guide explains in detail. There is a lot of symbolism and it is very interesting. We embrace and feel so privileged to have grown up and lived far from this violence and gangster rule. What a fantastic and rewarding day! We leave Comuna 13 with many emotions in our bodies.

We stay only two nights in Medellin and then the journey continues. This time to a smaller village called Guatapé which is east of Medellin.
Guatapé, Åh vilken vacker o mysig by! Väldigt populär som utflyktsmål för Colombianska familjer. Här kommer vi trivas!
Guatape, Oh what a beautiful and cozy village! Very popular as an excursion destination for Colombian families. We will enjoy ourselves here!
In the small town of Guatapé
A lot of colours here too
We live in a fantastic apartment decorated in a traditional way. Around the village of Guatapé, there is a lake system with an immense number of arms and fingers. We don’t go out on the lake, but prioritize the village’s big tourist magnet – the stone that grows tall in the middle of nowhere. It is immense. It is a monolith that can be seen from afar. It is possible to climb up via 659 steps, which we choose to do.

Now we are on our way to the big stones
We have many steps to climbing
We walk and walk and the stairs never end. From the time we get off the small bus, there are 298 steps plus long steep slopes between several of the steps. And now we have only come to the foot of the ”stone”. A black monolith that stands completely alone here in the landscape. Now another 659 steps await. It is heavy, hot and crowded. Many want to get to the top. Oh, we can do it!
About half way up
Almost there. Only 34 more steps
The view is striking. We look out over an artificial lake that winds between small hills. The fingers on the lake are almost innumerable. It is fantastic to have come up here and enjoy the fabulous view.
We made it! Now we can enjoy the view

It is a lovely sunny afternoon. We have taken chairs out of the room and are sitting and enjoying red wine and snacks on the sidewalk outside our accommodation. The Colombians appreciate our initiative and greet us as they pass. Buenas tardes, hola, buenas…..We get to practice our Spanish. Time passes and we walk to the center. The village teems with people’s life and every chair in the outdoor seating is full. This is a place where the locals love to make a pilgrimage during the weekends. We each buy our beer or chicken skewers in the square, sit on a wall and enjoy the crowd. It’s wonderful to be a part of it

Guatape is a charming village with fantastic alleys. The colors are not as strong as in Salento, but at least as extensive. Here, the houses also have decorations in countless variations. It is delicious and original at the same time. We are enjoying ourselves here, but tomorrow we will move on. Now it is the Amazon that awaits.
Charmigt men ganska opraktiskt.
Now sitting on our little balcony of our very special accommodation here in Salento. The bed should represent an old English car. Charming but quite impractical. Tore the dress twice on sharp edges already. Today Jan is not feeling well and is in bed. So I get to explore the city by myself and just take it easy.
Our first room. We changed room three times. All to really close doors
The view from our hostel
Vilken underbar och charmig by!
What a wonderful and charming village! I wander around the narrow alleys. Up and down steep slopes. Restaurants and small boutiques everywhere, artists exhibiting their works and many of the visitors bring dogs of all sizes – from tiny lapdogs to dogs as big as lions. On each side of the narrow roads there are low houses in all kinds of colors. All incredibly well-kept and with flower boxes under almost every single window. These are colors we would never think of combining at home in ours scandinavian house but oh, how beautiful it is. How about pink, yellow or lime? Yellow, purple or turquoise? Orange, turquoise or lime? The imagination is endless and it is so beautiful. Below our balcony they spray paint doors today. The color today is yellow or rather mustard yellow. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. At the same time, thirty horses walk by and a neighbor a few houses away ”screams” loudly and loudly so that it echoes between houses and hills
One of all beautiful streets

Now a beautiful rainbow shines over the green-clad hills that are our view. We are in the middle of the worst rainy season but today the sun is shining and the temperature is like a lovely Swedish summer day. It’s wonderful to be here, and if only Jan stays alert and healthy until tomorrow, he too can soak up the atmosphere, and the plan is to go on an excursion between valleys and mountains in this area. Maybe not tomorrow but the next day.

Jan has perked up but we choose to take a quiet day here in the village so Jan gets to look around and experience the small village with its colors. There is a viewpoint with 300 steep steps up. We are recommended another route that goes around and choose it. Once up on the mountain, we have a fantastic view of the village of Salento. We walk down again and enjoy the picturesque village. It’s nice to have a relaxing and quiet day. But tomorrow we are going on an excursion

We meet up this morning to be picked up by a jeep and a guide. The journey to La Carbonera will take about three hours. La Carbonera, also known as the Sanctuary of the Wax Palms, is a valley that, according to the travel agency, has only recently opened up to tourists. We are only three jeeps on our way there today and it feels privileged to be able to experience a place before tourism reaches it in full scale.
We are standing on the back of the jeep which is struggling up winding, squishy and usually very muddy roads. It is a narrow road lined with green hills, forest, palm trees and cows. On one side of the road it drops steeply straight down – way down. Without any kind of fence. We gasp and our legs tingle when we look down over the cliff. On the way up, we stop at several places to soak up the nature, the views and the adorable view. It’s a fantastic journey and ahead of us awaits a valley full of Colombia’s national tree – the Wax Palm, in Latin Ceroxylon quindiuense. In Colombia, 289 different palm trees grow, of which 47 are endemic.
On our jeep
A lot of cows, they live a fantastic life with a lot of green gras and Wonderful view
A narrow road with a steep on our right side. And we are meeting another jeep
This forest looks really old
A lonely tree
Now the jeep has stopped and our hike through the valley begins. We are almost speechless by how beautiful it is! The tall palm trees grow up to seventy meters high straight up towards the blue sky. We bend our heads back so far that we almost fall backwards. Lying down on the grass and looking up is a good alternative. They are the tallest palm trees in the entire world. This Wax Palm is one of the endemics and only grows in a small area here around Salento in Colombia and we now get to see lots of them. Some stand alone and boast, while others grow in large clusters. They only grow at high altitudes and often the clouds envelop them. The leaves are a little silver gray and the stems are slender with annual rings. According to the guide, each ring is six years old and a palm tree can live up to two hundred years.
It’s amazing to walk around in the soft grass and surrounded by these stately palm trees. And seeing endless palm trees as far as the eye can see. Powerful feeling.
The view is stunning
Each tree is said to be able, after felling, to yield over eleven liters of wax. This wax was used to make candles. Which in turn were used for offerings to gods and saints. At least this was done way back in the day.
After about 1 hour, our hike comes to an end. In order to be picked up by the jeep, in a special place, the guide takes us ”off the beaten track” and we have to rush down at least five hundred meters on precipitous slopes. We haven’t even seen a single other tourist since we started our hike. But probably no one has walked/rushed this precipitous path before.
Sometimes we had to crawl under the fence
It dosn’t look so steep – but it sure is
We are lucky, all day during the hike the sun shines and the sky is clear blue. Now as we reach our destination the heavens open and the rain begins to pour down. We have a three hour jeep ride back to Salento and our room. It will be a really rainy ride home. The rain patters on the roof of the jeep, the road is like a torrent of muddy water and mud and lightning and thunder are right above us. We are incredibly happy that we are sitting under a roof and not on a motorcycle or an ATV (a four-wheeled motorcycle) like some others we meet. Once back in the village it stops, luckily raining!
A pig sleeping on the muddy road
The whole day has been a fantastic experience. The magnificent nature, the fantastic views, the wax palms and the ending with the torrential rain and thunderstorm.
After the relaxing and beautiful days in Salento, new adventures await. Tomorrow we take the bus to Colombia’s second largest city, Medellin. Which has a violent history.
At last we have gone inland to explore Colombia and South America. A dream since adolescence.
Today we fly south and over the great continent of South America. The first destination is the capital of Colombia, Bogotá. A large city at an altitude of almost 2700 meters with almost as many inhabitants as the whole of Sweden. The biggest city we have visited so far since we left Sweden.
Southamerica. Vilja is on the blue spot up on the northern coast. And we are just exploring the red area
We just got word that the flight is delayed by about three hours. Here we sit in the boiling heat with our backpacks and were about to take a taxi. We think a bit and decide to wait an hour. Time flies and we finally leave for the airport. Some stressed thoughts come – What if the plane is still on time? Should we have left at the appointed time anyway? Once at the airport, after being cheated by our taxi driver who charged double, we realize that we are out in very good time.
We are flying with Jetsmart from Cartagena to Bogotá
The flight goes quickly and we get the luggage almost immediately. A taxi takes us to our room where we settle in. Then there will be a walk in the neighborhood. We put on all the warm clothes we have but are still cold. It’s freezing cold here. Around eight degrees. It has been three years since we last felt such cold, so the bodies are not used to it. Even if we are prepared, it will be a shock. Our warm clothes are also limited as they have been put away for a long time since we left Europe. It will be a mishmash of clothes, layer upon layer and with sandals on the feet. Haha – probably would never have gone dressed like that in Sweden 😆
Our Airbnb is in this charming courtyard
The streets are teeming with people. Most young now in the evening. There is at least one university nearby and probably this neighborhood, the historic Candelaria, is popular especially among the younger population.
Jan går in gratis som pensionär.
First full day in Bogota and we decide to be cultural. The first stop will be the Museo del Oro – the gold museum. Jan enters for free as a pensioner. One room after another is full of fantastic gold objects. Here there are over 34,000 beautiful gold objects, the most exhibited, in the same place, in the whole world. But now we are also in the part of the world that went by the name of El Dorado. A mythological utopia that is filled with riches and gold. The myth was originated by the Spanish in the 16th century. It sent countless fortune seekers on expeditions as they fantasized about gold and dreamed of endless wealth. It’s a fantastic exhibition and we get to see a film where we learn how they designed the objects using beeswax and clay. So interesting! In addition to all the incredible gold objects, wonderful and playful earthenware, bronze and other objects are also on display. Most with a function such as bowls, for offerings, shields, decoration or pots. We wander for a long time between stands and rooms and enjoy what we see.

Next, we take pedestrian streets to Plaza Bolívar, the main square of Bogotá. Here it teems with people, vendors, llamas, food carts, artists and pigeons. In the middle of the square stands a statue of Simon Bolívar, the South American general who liberated several countries in South America from Spain. He is almost seen as a saint here.

The next stop will be an art center with mainly art by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The name may not be so familiar to everyone, but many recognize his art. Slightly round figures, both people, animals and fruits. A formidable exhibition with incredible works of art. In one room there is a temporary exhibition of unlikely gold objects. This room was extra heavily guarded with doors like in large bank vaults.

Between these stops, we’ve walked around the neighborhoods, listened to lovely South American songs by live artists, ate empenadas, had a beer on a park bench and soaked up the feeling of being here. The rain comes suddenly and we seek shelter first under a tree and then under a roof. Our rain clothes are left in the room. Vendors with umbrellas and raincoats do good business.

Soon we will have dinner, but first we stop at a simple bar. The music pours out of the speakers. We each take our beer and enjoy the atmosphere. Opposite us are two men who are drinking something we are curious about. We each order our Chelada, what the men drink, which originally comes from Mexico. It is a beer drink made from beer, freshly squeezed lime juice and on the rim of the glass is a ring of salt and chilli. Yummy! Time passes and we feel tired. On the way back to the room, we buy street food with us – kebabs and choritzo. We then eat it in our room.
Happy in the bar
Now we drink chelada
We are now sitting in the room in the Candelaria district here in Bogotá. It is dark outside and we are tired after a whole day of walking and exploring this big city with over eight million inhabitants. Through the windows, the sound of music can be heard far away. Candelaria is a bustling neighborhood full of folk life, vendors, restaurants, artists and culture. Unfortunately, also a lot of beggars and also the homeless who sleep where they find a roof over their heads so as not to get wet when it rains. What a tragic life they live. At night, the temperature outside drops to between five and ten degrees, so it is important to have warm clothes. The only thing missing here is outdoor seating. We still haven’t managed to find anyone. Partly it may be due to the fact that it is cold and that it rains a lot….but the same thing applies in Sweden.
Dag två i Bogotá.
Day two in Bogotá. Today we have decided to go up to the church on top of the mountain Montserrate, part of the Andes. This mountain has long been a famous pilgrimage destination. We walk, about 600 meters on streets before we get to the line for the cable car up. It is breathtaking to ride up to almost 3,200 meters above sea level. But oh how beautiful it is! And what a view! A woman stands on the wall and seeing it rushes through her whole body. We then talk to her – a woman from Bolivia who speaks Swedish!

Also have to point out that we are at high altitude now. And it is noticeable when we walk. I know I’m in bad shape…but this bad? Walking two hundred meters, even downhill, makes me completely out of breath. Jan copes a little better, but he also notices the height. After all, we are at an altitude of 2,700 meters in the city of Bogotá.
We leave early in the morning the next day for the bus trip to Salento. The first leg, to Armenia, will take anything from eight hours or more. The bus station in Bogotá is huge but we get good help to find. Once on the bus, it takes about 1 1/2 hours to get out of the city of Bogotá
A graveyard for motorbike and cars
The journey then goes through nature with plantations, grazing cows, coffee plantations, pastures. High mountains and deep valleys. The weather alternates between bright sun and really big downpour. There is a lot of road work on large parts of the road, so sometimes there are long queues, but it still runs smoothly.
It’s heavy rain
Back to the bus after a breake
We drive on heavily winding serpentine roads that climb higher and higher. The road is lined with bamboo that rises over 40 meters high. On the steep side down towards the valley climb houses built on pillars clinging as if floating above the river far far below. The surroundings mostly shine in green changing shades of banana plants, bamboo, eucalyptus and palm trees but are interrupted by colorful bougainvillea and flowering trees in yellow, orange, red and purple over the varying green ground vegetation.
The view is stunning
After climbing slowly upwards for a couple of hours, we come up among the clouds. The beautiful view is replaced by a grey-white mass that embraces us with its humidity and the water runs down the window panes.
We are high up among the skies
The bus journey takes us, after almost nine hours, to the city of Armenia. There we quickly get on the next bus and the journey is less than an hour to our destination Salento. We are tired when we arrive. Checks into our very simple room and goes out to the square and its side streets to have dinner. Finally we get to eat fish! Chard in garlic tastes wonderful and after a short walk in the small village Salento already gives more taste. But we are exhausted after twelve hours of travel and go to bed early.

Back in Cartagena and Colombia. It is wonderful to be here in this colourful, lively and wonderful city. More on that below. Now I first want to write about the time since the last post.
Kailani is on the hard. Empty of almost everything on board and shut down for a long time. Jan has built a stand for the tarpaulin and now she is covered and protected from both sun, rain and snow. The two warehouses we have in Lysekil are packed right up to the doors. The car is also cleaned, set aside and parked for a longer period of time. It has been expensive this summer. First annual service then replacement of brake pads and brake discs and then it was also discovered that the two front tires needed to be replaced. Ugh, what sour money to spend. But, but, the car is necessary both for work and for the boat. So it’s just a matter of biting the sour apple.
Kailani leave the ocean and are going on the hard for a long time
Before we flew here to Cartagena, I spent two weeks in Thailand. Absolutely wonderful weeks even though it rained pretty much the whole time. I stayed a day in Bangkok and enjoyed the hustle and bustle, the food, the markets and the wonderful crowds. The next day it was off to Koh Lanta where I feel at home.
Luxury flight. It was only half full so I got four seats on my own

Lanta ❤️ I have lived here all winter for five years. Tobias went to school here from 2nd to 6th grade. We have gotten to know the island and many of its inhabitants. We have seen the island change and develop. Mostly good but some bad. When we first got here there were hardly any paved roads, only dirt roads made of red clay. Everything was closed down in the low season, both hotels and restaurants, there were only a few tourists outside the high season, only a few hotels, hardly any traffic, etc. Now it is a wide road that is being built, lots of resorts, restaurants and several housing estates where expats have bought houses. But it is still authentic and lovely Lanta. The soul remains. Just as friendly people, just as good food if not even better and the feeling of Thailand on the Thais’ terms is great.

I had two fantastic weeks with many meetings with friends, lovely and lively evenings out, meetings with many new acquaintances and I enjoyed good food. Men, nya äventyr väntar!
But, new adventures await!
Back in Sweden, all our luggage had to be packed, weighed and measured. My bag from Thailand didn’t come with my flight home and there were a lot of things in there that we were supposed to take with us. We spent time buying food and sweets that are hard to come by in the Caribbean and Colombia. And a lot of practical things that are cheaper and above all easier to get hold of have been purchased during the summer. All in all, we had six large bags with us on the flight. Plus four pieces of hand luggage. The night before we were to fly, I received a phone call that my bag from Thailand had arrived. By then we had already finished packing and each bag weighed twenty-three kilos, so we had no room for more. So the airline from the Thailand trip sent the bag to Cartagena. When we checked in, we saw my bag on the baggage belt right in front of our bags.
My bag from Thailand that did not arrive with me in Sweden. Now they send it to Colombia instead

The trip went smoothly but the customs in Cartagena were very interested in our, now seven, bags. We finally got through and took a taxi to the room we had rented for the first three nights.
Here we live in the middle of a chaos of all our luggage that must be sorted and placed in the right place, we wash clothes, sort in stowage spaces, set up sails, pump the dinghy, cook, sort even more and check what needs to be bought in. All this in incredible heat. Luckily we have AC inside the boat now that we are at the dock. Don’t know how we would have coped otherwise. Out on deck and in the cockpit, the sweat pours off us. The eyes sting from the drops of sweat that get there and if we stand still for a minute there is a wet puddle on the floor from all the sweat. The heat here is indescribable. Walking 100 meters is almost impossible without perishing from the heat. And the heat rash I struggled with almost all of last season, aboard Vilja, is back and itchy.
Today is the day we wash clothes

That Vilja lay still for a long time can be seen on the hull at the water’s edge and under the water. We have a whole mussel farm there and further down full of barnacles. Jan has worked a bit with scratching but now we have a Colombian who has been scratching for about three hours. He says that there is a strong build-up and recommends us to have the boat scraped every three weeks. Which might be wise. Otherwise, it will hardly be possible to sail the boat. If we are also going to the Galapagos, the boat must be completely clean underneath.
A lot of mussles growing on the boat
A couple of evenings we have been in the old part of town, Getsemani. Here it is bursting with life and movement. The houses are from the colonial era and are low and colorful, but right next to them rise the skyscrapers of the luxury hotel. The bars attract with cheap drinks and it is crowded between all the thirsty and happy people. Between the bars you can see small shops selling colorful souvenirs and paintings and the streets are crowded with carts with fruit and vegetables, chicken skewers and other street food. In the streets and squares there is dancing as if we were at a carnival every single day all year round. There are several dance groups that solve each other with different dances. One very energetic and African-inspired and the other where the man shows his adoration for beautiful women. What joy everyone radiates! What a gorgeous color! And what an outstanding folk life! We absolutely love being here!

In a couple of days we will travel and explore the interior of Colombia. We are really looking forward to that. We hope to see, among other things, Bogotá, Medellin, the Amazon, jungles, tall palm trees and colorful folk life. We must bring warm clothes because Bogotá is at an altitude of over 2,600 meters. What an adventure awaits us!
Bara knappt fyra dygn. Vi har bra vind, runt 10 – 13 meter pr sekund och trots revade segel seglar Vilja fram i över sju knop i snitt.
We are in the middle of the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and Colombia. The waves are high, up to four meters, and the sea is rough. Up on top of the waves it foams white. Around the bow, the waves hit high, sometimes all the way back to the cockpit where we get a little shower from time to time. It’s difficult conditions on board as Vilja jerks off and on and stomps against the waves at the same time as she tilts a lot. Just when she leans to starboard (right) it becomes extra difficult because the galley is on the other side and as soon as you open a cupboard door you are attacked by things that fall out. Cooking suffers and we live on already cooked white cabbage wedges, beetroot steaks and bread. Luckily the sailing won’t take that long. Just barely four days. We have good wind, around 10 – 13 meters per second, and despite torn sails, Vilja sails along at over seven knots on average.

It’s the last night on watch this side of the hurricane season. It’s dark but starry. The moon has not risen yet. I sit up for seven hours before Jan comes and unties me at 02 in the morning. It still feels meditative to sit here alone in a small boat completely enveloped in darkness in the border between sky and sea. It’s like a little cocoon of our own where Vilja is the security that surrounds us with its safe journey through the sea.
Another beautiful sunset
Tomorrow we arrive in Cartagena, where Vilja will lie still until sometime in November. We will stay until June 25th when we fly home to Sweden for a couple of months during the summer. My boat, Kailani, will be launched and there will also be boating in the beautiful Bohusland archipelago.
Under the skyes we can see land – Colombia
Long before we come in to land, we see Cartagena’s skyline with all the high-rise buildings in a row. A Manhattan in miniature. It feels both exciting and terrifying to enter a city of millions after all the paradise islands we have visited. Talk about contrasts. It is definitely the biggest city we came to during our entire trip together. Once we got through the inlet, it’s a chaos of smaller boats going around at high speed. Most are party boats playing loud music. It is important to keep an eye out in all directions so as not to hit someone or get hit yourself. After an hour we arrive at the Club de Pesca marina where we booked a place. There are many large and expensive motorboats and it is quite crowded between the piers where our assigned place is. Most boats lie with the stern inwards and we intend to add in the same way. Jan is used to it since Europe where all boats go in with the stern. The bow thruster has not really been reliable in the past and it is a must to get the boat right. Of course it shuts down and despite several attempts it is impossible. The boat comes in across. So we go out and turn the boat so the bow comes in first. A lot of people have come to the jetty to help and to protect the boats on either side of us. I go forward in the bow and with three meters to go I signal that Jan must slow down. But the cockpit is empty. Jan is gone. About five men on the jetty receive Vilja so we don’t go straight into the jetty. One person comes on board and helps with the stern moorings. Where is Jan then? When we go in, he discovers that there is a lot of smoke inside the boat and it smells like fire. He places the bow between the sternposts and immediately lets go of steering Vilja and rushes in to get a fire extinguisher. It turns out that the fuse for the bow thruster has started to burn and the entire fuse box with additional fuses is completely destroyed. The wooden lid on top shows clear traces of fire. We are really lucky in the bad luck. What a horror if the fire had spread. The extension goes down in history as the worst ever and it will probably be hard to beat…

Cartagena is an absolutely amazing city! Vilja is within walking distance to Getsemane, the old part of town, where the crowd is large and the cozy factor is high. This weekend is Cartagena’s birthday and on Monday the holiday of Corpus Christi and we will of course go into Gethsemane to see what is happening. The streets and squares are crowded. The party mood is high. Everywhere there are street stalls selling food, drinks, drinks and you name it. In most squares but also in the streets, music is played and there are dance shows, juggling and all kinds of entertainment. Like being at a carnival. Cartagena is a city where the party goes on every day of the week, every week of the year. It’s easy to fall in love. The displays are absolutely incredible. The dance and rhythm are in the bodies and the joy and pride of the country and culture shines through those who perform. There are both children and adults and everyone is fantastically talented. And they look like they’re having so much fun.

We walk in or take a taxi for twenty-five kroner pretty much every night. This is so much fun and we enjoy life. We will be here until the end of November. Wonderfully! It’s so fun to be a part of everything we experience!

Until we fly home to Sweden in just under two weeks, we will be working a lot in and at Vilja. In order to be able to do something in the heat, we have started our AC. Oh how nice it is to have dry and cool (29 degrees) air inside the boat! And it feels so much easier to sleep without the humid 38 degree warm air. You almost need a blanket to keep from freezing. Now you can wipe out cupboards and nooks and crannies, vacuum pack, wash and fix everything without the sweat running in puddles onto the floor.
