Out on the sea

Last trembling minutes before departure! We are going on a voyage where we will not see land for about thirty days – a whole month! It is completely unimaginable and difficult to understand. Our passports are stamped so we have technically already left the Galapagos and Ecuador. What we are waiting for is an inspection by about four people. A bit like when we got here. But now they must check that we do not bring plants and animals above all.

Obeskrivbart!

Now lighter we anchor and are on our way! The time is 15.00, Sunday and we will sail without seeing land for about 30 days. The Marquesas in French Polynesia is the next country in sight. Indescribable! We hope for and need wind. Our diesel only lasts a maximum of 6-7 days. It is completely windless now – and according to forecasts we only have a calm – Pacific Ocean around us for about 24 hours.

Ön vi just lämnat.

What a beautiful first day and evening! The color spectrum of sky, sea and clouds is incredible. From deep blue through  clearest blue to light blue. And then dark blue, gray and black. It sparkles in mother-of-pearl, silver, gold and fiery yellow. The sky is reflected in the sea and the clouds give depth and  perspective with their imaginative formations. It’s so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes. The day is drawing to a close. The sun is going down and dusk is taking over. Soon the darkness envelops Vilja in a safe and quiet embrace. The moon, like a happy mouth, slowly begins to light up the sky. It is a starry night with countless stars twinkling from infinity. Far, far behind us are the last flickering lights of Santa Cruz. The island we just left. Probably more light than usual as it is the second day of the carnival and the party and joy is in full swing. At the same time as we steer towards the southwest, away from land and into the dark. A few degrees more south of the equator where we hope to find wind.

It’s hot and stuffy here I’m on duty. The hum of the engine is lulling but think how wonderful it would have been to turn it off and travel with full sails completely silent. Only with the sound of the waves, the sails fluttering and the creaking of the wooden stairs breaking the silence.

The shifts roll on overnight and now it’s a new day with brilliant sunshine. Three fishing lines hang out with hope for a pacifier. Fishing luck has failed us in the Pacific. The pacifiers we got have been too big, probably Blue Marlin of at least forty kilos, so both lines and lures have followed them to the depths of the sea.

Birds fly around the boat day and night. During the day it is mostly small birds that look more like swallows that fly just above the water line in the hope of finding small fish. While at night it is larger seabirds that often choose to ride along as free passengers when they are not hovering around the boat in the glow of the lanterns.

Finally, after a day, we can set sail. It’s not very windy, but it’s incredibly nice to turn off the engine and travel forward with only the force of the wind. We are traveling in the middle of an enormous ocean. Not a boat in sight.

One of the fishing lines suddenly rattles so we hear that we have had a pacifier. Niklas quickly gets to his feet and starts to roll in. The resistance isn’t that great, so it’s a smaller fish,  but we see a fish at the end of the line. Immediately afterwards, it also cuts into line two. Jan and Niklas each pull in a small Mahi Mahi. What happiness! Finally we get two fish into the boat after several have released.  Now there will be fresh grilled fish for dinner!

Last beautiful Islands. And prepairing for a month out on open sea

First day on Floreana and we take a water taxi into the small village. The island looks completely different from the previous ones we have been to. No cactuses but rolling high green hills. Everywhere there is black lava. Here the volcanoes are no longer active, as on Isabella, but the craters where greenery has grown up, are good for birdlife and their nesting. We are met by the agent who brings our zarpe, paper that the boat is allowed to leave the island/country. We start talking to a tour guide who is about to go on an excursion and we quickly decide to go along.

We have arrived at Floreana Island

We travel together with the family from the boat Spirit, in an open bus. Window seat for everyone! It’s a steep hill up and the bus can’t really handle it. So the driver stops the engine several times. In any case, we finally get up and start our walk. First to an area where Floreana’s 19 turtles reside. Floreana really longs for the turtles who are now babies at the rescue center in Santa Cruz, which we visited before. The stock needs to be expanded for the species to persist.

The walk continues through fascinating nature with caves, narrow passages like in Ronja Rövardotter and fantastic views of greenery and sea. For centuries, pirates used Floreana as a hideout, whalers stocked up on food here, and they even created their own post office. The first family to settle in the Galapagos Islands settled here on Floreana. They came from Germany in the 1930s and then lived in the caves on the island. The daughter, who was born in the cave, is still alive and is one of about 150 inhabitants.  Today she owns both cruise ships, hotels and a farm. Her father carved a face in a rock right by the caves. Fascinating that this was only barely 100 years ago.

And the local Floreana iguanas is red

When we get back to the parking lot, we have to wait a long time for the car. When he finally arrives, we go to a farm. Floreana is largely self-sufficient in vegetables and it is one of two islands with access to fresh water. On this farm, pineapples, bananas and cassava are grown, among other things. We get half a banana log and about 15 kilos of cassava before the journey goes back to the coastline where we are transported to a beautiful sandy beach that is sandwiched between the lava formations. Here there will be a moment of snorkeling in the crystal clear water before we walk back to the harbor. On the way we stop at a bar for a drink break and we write cards home which are posted in the mailbox. It will be fun to see if the cards find their way home, even if they are posted without a stamp. Which should not be needed.

It is so fascinating to sit here in the boat and watch all the sea lions and turtles swimming around and under Vilja. The sea lions, who are quite clumsy on land, swim so incredibly gracefully and smoothly through the sea and the waves. They are clearly in their element as they plow through the water swinging their hind feet which are probably the model for the flippers we buy and use when we snorkel. They swim up to Vilja as if to greet us and ask what we are doing here.

Messenger_creation_094BE692-7099-4B96-8490-70572A656264
They really look like our flippers

The sea turtles in turn swim around, dive down for food and then stick their cute heads up and look around curiously. Here at Floreana there are plenty of them and they are big. Sometimes several of them swim together. Although turtles are loners and need neither a partner nor friends. They can be down under the water for an absolute maximum of an hour, but usually they are down for only a few minutes. They can live without food and water for up to eight months. Hence, there were many sailors who long ago took turtles with them on their long voyages, as provisions. Tragic. But what a blessing it is to experience the diversity of this incredible and rich animal life in its proper environment!

Even here in our bubble of happiness, things happen that we wanted to avoid. Today our generator went out. We depend on it to keep the freezer, watermaker and Starlink for Wifi running. Sure, we have solar cells, but the above three things draw a lot of power and are a luxury we would rather not be without. Let’s hope there is some knowledgeable staff on Santa Cruz Island who can help us when we get there. But first we have a night sailing to our last island, San Christobal, especially us tonight.

Sunset just after we have left Floreana

Didn’t think there would be any night shifts in the Galapagos, but now I’m sitting here in the dark philosophizing. Can’t see the moon or stars, but it’s quite common this early evening session. We are experimenting with a lot of new food now. We got about 15 kilos of cassava yesterday and Marie cooked a pot of cassava and leftovers. Today it was cauliflower teriyaki for dinner. New flavors and new experiences. Here in the Galapagos, what we can buy is limited, so we save the meat we have for our soon-to-come long-distance sailing.

Samma sak gör taxibåten – men i annan takt.

Arrived at San Christobal and there are many sailboats here. The ”sailing boat competition” ARC around the world is here and there are many really big and luxurious boats. We got here early this morning and are quite far out from the pier. Sea lions and sea turtles swim around us, here too. We are just as fascinated and happy all the time as we get to experience the wildlife. Taking the water taxi in and out of town here was an experience mixed ith horror. It’s blowing right into the anchorage and Vilja is rocking hard. The taxi boat does the same – but at a different pace. Marie was about to fall into the water, stuck between Vilja and the taxi boat, but luckily it went well.

Two men plus Jan and Niklas, toil like animals to get the generator loose and then up here at Santa Cruz. Where we sailed back after just one day at San Christobal. The space is tight and the screws are tight and have rusted. After almost four hours of struggle, it finally loosens and with joint efforts it is hoisted out of the hold and then down into a taxi boat. Now we have to hope that they can repair it so that we can sail on.

Now we are getting tired of waiting and just walking around in uncertainty. The work on the generator is going insanely slow and they don’t even seem to have located the fault we (read Niklas) believe. We have been and pushed them several times and in between we have stocked up and washed clothes. Now we have decided that they can reinstall the generator tomorrow and we have ordered departure for Sunday morning. So now it remains to be seen if everything works. Unfortunately, we have no hope that the generator will work, but we will probably have to do without.

Departure from Galapagos is booked! Tomorrow, Sunday 15.00 we check out and start our sailing towards the Marquesas. Almost 4000 nautical miles must be covered and it will take around 30 days. Everything depends on wind and weather. It will be very exciting to do the longest sailing of our lives without seeing land!

Taking a rest

Today,  Saturday, is the launch. Always a little nervous in a boat owner’s life when the boat has to go back into the water. Getting Vilja in will be more difficult than they thought. The ramp has a little too little slope for the vehicle driving. We are properly tipped aft and have to back out. But it doesn’t work. Finally, the vehicle has to drive all the way down almost underwater so that we come out in deep enough water and suddenly we are free! Lovely with water under us again. We go into the quay for the night and will check out tomorrow. We are also waiting for all the certificates we need to enter the Galapagos

Today it’s time for Vilja to get into the sea again

It becomes a bit of an anticlimax when our papers arrive with the wrong name of the captain and he who wrote them is in church and doesn’t want to deal with the problem. In addition, we have problems with immigration. But with the incredible help of Patricia at the port office, everything works out. This also means that we will not be leaving as planned, but will be in the port for another day. But tomorrow we expect to leave early. Now wait about ten days at sea. The atmosphere on board is good and calm, but it’s a little nerve-wracking to go on a long sail again.

At 8.15 a.m., Monday, we launch! Out on the Pacific Ocean, out on adventure! The first day will probably be quite cloudy, then it will be quiet. It is the Pacific Ocean and it must live up to its name, we have heard.

Fruits and onions for a long time

It’s a lovely sail. The wind is slanting in from the stern now so it’s a breeze which is usually very pleasant. The fishing lines go out quickly and it doesn’t take long before it rattles properly. It’s a big one. The line goes out further and further and further and there is no chance to brake. Rolling in is next to impossible. Suddenly it lets go and takes the fishing line with it. When we rolled in, we saw that the metal cord at the bottom had come off. It had been so big that we hadn’t even managed to get it on board. We can only hope for new fishing luck and hopefully a little less next time.

We are heading SE now. First, we will round a cape in Panama and we want to steer clear of at least part of a stiltje belt that is stationary in the same place. Once we have rounded it, we will steer more directly towards the Galapagos.

This is how it looks on the plotter. We are meeting four big cargoships

Försökte precis gå in i båten men ramlade omkull pga hur Vilja rör sig.

Oh how it swings… The first day was perfect. We sailed an average of almost 8 knots and came 175 nm from Vista mar. But now we are in silence… Not just silence but a lot of waves as well. Vilja rocks back and forth completely hysterically.  We have taken down all the sails and we have started our night shifts. It’s dark, pitch black outside. And Vilja sways back and forth. Loose things in the boat rattle, both inside cupboards and outside. Hanging bags hit bulkheads (walls) and moving is almost impossible. Obviously difficult to sleep for those inside the boat. Jan just came out. The front girl is like a sauna in the heat, without any flow of wind. It’s not fun out here right now. Warm and with a Will that swings and swings. From page to page. Over and over again. Just tried to get into the boat but fell over because of the way Vilja moves. We knew we would/could get into a lull belt the second day and now here we are. Now we’ll see how we handle it. Start the engine to get out of it or lie down and bob for a few days. We have to make a decision tomorrow morning. If we don’t do it already tonight.

Stiltje can also be beautiful. Now Vilja doesn’t roll anymore and then we enjoy the mirror-like sea which is so blue so blue. Since this morning we have been driving. The current also pushes us forward. We decide to turn off the engine and lie down and drive for a while. It is wonderful to swim in the cooling clear water at a depth of 3000 meters. Marie and I stay for a long time while Jan and Niklas clean the water line. Marie and I are also scrubbing in the stern. Nothing has happened but we want to prevent it so we hopefully won’t have problems when we enter Galapagos waters. It feels absolutely lovely to swim in the sea after a week of hard work on land. We are fascinated by the incredibly blue color of the sea.

After an hour we start the engine again. Clean and fresh and free from old sweat.

The hours pass and there are new night shifts. Unfortunately we still go by motor so we don’t have the quiet peace when we are one with the sea and the darkness. But it’s still peaceful. The night shifts are lovely and we all enjoy some alone time.

Finally the sails are up again! After almost three days of stilts where we alternated between the engine, drifting around and trying to sail, we have fully set sail. Right now we are steering a little north of the Galapagos at just over six knots. If we continue like this, we will arrive on Tuesday. Eight days it would mean. The total distance is about 850nm and today we pass half the distance. Of course, it is celebrated with a glass of rum. The atmosphere on board is great.

We are suddenly surrounded by a large shoal of large dolphins. They are probably following a school of fish because there are also many birds flying above the water that dive down to get food. The dolphins come to the surface and blow air and then dive back down. Some of the dolphins make elegant jumps high into the air. Unfortunately, we don’t capture any in the picture. They are more interested in the fishermen than in us and Vilja this time. But what happiness flows through the body every time we meet them.

Just nu skiner solen.

It is so beautiful out here at sea. Deep blue almost unreal color of the endless sea. Deep blue and clear. The shades of blue in the sea, sky and clouds are amazing. Far, far away there is land…but it is several days’ sailing away so we are really in the middle of nowhere. Because around us on the starboard side, dark clouds are towering. Shall we enter a storm? It will be what it will be. Right now the sun is shining.

The sunsets out here are magical. Color changes starting with silver. Then come more and more golden colours. It turns into real gold and then fiery yellow and orange. The clouds get like a rim of fire around them as the sun approaches the horizon. The big ball of fire slowly disappearing behind the horizon. Then comes a light show in golden colors that turn into pink, cerise and finally various tones of purple and purple. What a blessing it is to experience this.

Nightwatch again…I love them. It is so incredibly peaceful to be one with nature, the sea and the dark. But I’m not completely alone. On one of our solar panels, a bird has found a place to rest its tired wings. She accepts that I get very close, even if she then starts to look a little wary around. She sits in the dark and looks ahead towards the open sea. Guess her night vision is better than mine. Think what emotions a small seabird can give. I feel a sense of belonging here far out at sea. It is another life that shares the experience here and now with me. A fascinating feeling. I find myself sitting here talking loudly to the Pippibird. Laughing a little at myself and continuing to talk. It’s so liberating.

Behind us there is light from something that must be a boat. Looking at plotter but no signal from another boat is visible. We must continue to look out during the night. The Pacific Ocean is big, incredibly big, so we shouldn’t get that close to any other boat. So it’s almost a little exciting that we now have one in sight. Guessing it’s a cruise ship that left mainland Ecuador, bound for the Galapagos.  We are sailing further south because of the wind, but a cruise ship with strong engines can go straight for the target

Today we follow the sailboat Scout on AIS. A boat we met in Cartagena that they too are on their way to the Galapagos now. After a few hours we see Scout clearly. They are getting closer and closer. ”Will, Will, Will” we hear on our VHF. It will be a lovely conversation on vhf far out at sea. Quite incredible that we meet five days out at sea from Panama. Even more incredible is when a fishing boat suddenly appears. It goes between us and Scout, who even has to turn. What is the probability of that with 400 nm. to the nearest country. Outside fairway.

It is a rainy and gray day. Everything goes in different shades of gray around us and the cushions we sit on are wet. Luckily it’s only drizzling so we can still sit outside in the cockpit. It’s still a bit nice that it’s cooler. The next day continues with gray and rain. I’ve lost count of how many days we’ve been out and what day of the week it is. But at least we have some wind today and have been able to sail all day. It is so peaceful to avoid the sound of the engine. Especially on the night shifts.

We are approaching the equator slowly but surely. Now in the middle of the night we are at degree N 0.47°, so less than one degree from the equator. It almost feels surreal that we are crossing with our own boat. And just after the equator we arrive at the Galapagos.  As it looks now, we will arrive in about two days, Wednesday morning.

Prepairing for next adventure

Mat överallt i varenda litet skrymsle.

Right now it’s a little smolk in paradise. For two whole days we have been trying to clean up bugs in the food and in the aft berth. We have emptied the entire aft berth of basically everything. And there’s a lot there…totally crammed. Food everywhere in every nook and cranny. Which are also good hiding places for these tiny rascals. They hide in seams, folds and between bags that are put together. They, som, 4 are found in bags with lentils, oatmeal and pasta etc. The first ones we found were inside bags of green lentils, so that’s probably the culprit. That we brought them with us from the store. We feel completely powerless right nowù. Several spray bottles of toxic insecticide have been used and we wash all food in its packaging in salt water. We naturally throw away everything we find crawling around, and even more food. Big fish around the boat are happy for all the food we throw out and when I just went in to swim the fish came forward thinking they would get more food. Now we vacuum pack everything that is not already vacuum packed. Unfortunately our plastic is not enough so we plan to go into Panama City again soon. We have to get over this. Lucky that we have a ”fumigation” of the whole boat in front of us. Looked forward to it with dread before, but now it’s with joy.

And we spray with insectkiller

Today we leave Isla San José, after several days of hard work with the insects, and head back towards Isla Mogo Mogo. Total headwind unfortunately so we go by engine. The fishing line is out hoping for a fish. It’s been a long time since we caught a fish now and it’s really missing in the diet. When we later leave for the Galapagos and then the Marquesas, we hope for a lot of fish. Tuna and Mahi Mahi are at the top of the wish list.

We enjoy it here. The water is crystal clear, the view towards the beach fantastic and the sunsets strikingly beautiful. Nice to have a few days of sun and swimming before all the work that awaits us. But everything has an end and we  need to go back to Panama City. In any case, it will be two wonderful full days here at MogoMogo.

Another beautiful sunset

Vi går in i flera affärer utan resultat.

It is Sunday and we are sailing back towards Panama City. We have a lot to arrange and to stock up which we think is easiest there. It will only be about three days before we sail further west towards Costa Rica. We lay down on the City side where we lay the last time we were here. It is high tide and hardly any wind when we arrive. Already today we are leaving to try to get hold of plastic for the vacuum machine. The taxi journey takes us to Albrook centre. We enter several trades with no results. Sigh, we really need plastic to secure all food. But we provision for the Pacific. We will do that every day now, buying as much as we can carry. Dry food, canned food, cleaning supplies and wine. Jan looks like a pack donkey with several heavy backpacks.

The days go by fast and today we leave Panama City and go to Isla Otoque. An island between here and Vista Mar. On Saturday we will lift Vilja. She will lie up on land for a few days, up to a week. The bottom must be cleaned, grommets replaced and a lot of other things. Before we leave for the Galapagos, we have to have a lot of certificates and confirmations of work done. There are a whole host of rules that apply, and it’s scary. This causes many sailors to opt out of the Galapagos. In addition, it is expensive to go there. But it is a ”once in a lifetime experience” and for me a dream since I was 6 years old.

A small fishingboat on our way to Isla Otoque

Early morning the next day and we leave Isla Otoque and head for Vista Mar. The boat Porrima is already there with Peter, with whom we spent a lot of time since Cuba. It will be fun to meet again. And on Monday, Marie and Niklas will come. They will sail with us to the Galapagos and then to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. They are with Vilja for up to three months. It becomes a challenge to be four on board when it is already cramped for two. But by really keeping the smallest thing in order and constantly putting everything back in its place, we solve it. We must. Niklas has been with us before, across the Atlantic. Marie is a mutual friend to all of us who is also a skilled and experienced sailor.

After a fun evening yesterday that started with drinks on board Vilja and continued with pizza and dancing at the marina’s restaurant, we are now sitting and waiting to be picked up. It was very windy when we got here yesterday and unfortunately it is still very windy today. It will be a challenge to steer into the furrow where we will be lifted with strong wind diagonally from the stern. What we are waiting for now is that there will be high tide. First, Porrima is to be launched and then it is our turn to be taken ashore.

Now we are on the way to haul out, the wind is howling and the waves are quite high with white foam. In this we shall go ashore. On board with us are two extra people. We are approaching where we are going up. The wind blows strongly obliquely from the stern, which means that we have to apply the hill to slow down the speed with which we would otherwise fly forward. A line is thrown towards us at the same time as Vilja twists due to the wind and we approach the wall of stones on our port side. Jan cannot reverse, with the risk of getting the rope that was thrown into the propeller. It gets hectic and panicky. A boat from the marina assists and helps push us off the wall. When there are only a few meters left, the line in the water is taut and Jan can, luckily, put in full reverse. Puff! We made it without crashing into the wall. But it was really nervous for a while.

Here we get the last line thrown to us

Finally, Vilja is stuck with three ropes that slow us down. With the help of them, we are directed towards the groove in the machine we are going into. It is a difficult and cumbersome job and a total of ten personnel, two of whom dive in the water, work for over two hours before we are on site and Vilja can be driven to land. A few hours later, she is fully loaded and we can climb back on board. Now awaits up to a week of hard work.

The work has started. We started early this morning scraping off barnacles and some of the tens of thousands of barnacle remains that we have on the boat. When entering the Galapagos, the bottom must be completely clean. They come on board long before we arrive and then they dive under the boat and film with an underwater camera. Everything inside the boat must also be sparkling clean. In any case, kitchen and bathroom. We must have garbage sorting with clear signs, etc.

And Jan is polishing the boat

Marie Selfors and Niklas Helgesson are coming to us today. Both have extensive sailing experience and are also good at boat electronics and technology. It will be a fantastic addition and help. Of course, it will also be a challenge to be four people who will have room in our home, little Vilja, which is already full of things. It is intimate to live so closely together and it becomes difficult to have time and space of your own. But there will be four of us who share the night shift and work. In addition, there can be a lot of laughter, games and lovely conversations.

Oooooh, what a lovely and pleasant sailing we have now! The wind is also almost directly astern and it only goes at about three knots. But Vilja slides forward, there are no waves and she does not lean. After almost only sailing in rough seas or motoring since we left Cartagena, this is absolutely lovely! In addition, the sun is shining and it is a pleasant temperature just above thirty degrees. Not forty-five, as before, when the sweat was pouring and we could hardly do anything at all.

Sailing can bereally lovely

We have left Panama City after six nights there and are now heading for the Las Perlas archipelago. It will be nice to get out to the islands again after over ten days either on the road, in port or through the canal. We also had time to celebrate Christmas and New Year and our 3rd anniversary

As we approach, we see some dolphins swimming around, jumping and playing not too far from Vilja. Soon after, we enter boiling water. It is both current and the tide is rising. In the Caribbean there was hardly any tide, just like up in Scandinavia,  but here there is a 4 – 5 meter difference. Something we need to think about both when we go close to the beach and at anchor. Close to the beach, the ground that is visible at low tide is totally out of sight at high tide. And when anchoring when we want at least 3-4 times the depth outside, on our anchor chain, so we have to count on the depth at high tide.

A really nice anchorage

We are located in the strait between the northern islands of Isla Chapera and Isla Mogo Mogo. Here are three other boats besides us. Since we got here, Vilja has turned around 180 degrees so we are exactly the opposite of where we were when we got here. We haven’t launched the dinghy yet, but that will be tomorrow. We were up early today to get going just after dawn so we didn’t risk adding in the dark yet again. Now the food is on the stove. Today it will be meatballs with potatoes, chanterelle sauce and lingonberry jam. Incredibly luxurious in the world we live in far from Swedish food products. It feels cool now, almost a little chilly. I have put on thin pants and a long-sleeved top. Looking at the thermometer out in the cockpit. It shows 27.8 degrees….Everything is relative.  We have been living in an enormous heat with over 40 degrees so this feels great.

We enjoy a lovely sunset onboard

We sit out front on the deck in the afternoon with wine and snacks. Around us, the sea is churning with currents and tides. It is such a soothing and wonderful sound. Six other sailboats are located here. All the others have the bow to the wind, while we are completely opposite. We are thinking about the reason…five of the others are catamarans and move differently while the only other monohull is a little further from the strait, that must be the reason. Vilja lies with the bow against the current while the others lie with the bow against the wind. Nice that there is a fan in the cockpit for the unusual sake.

The sky has amazing colours

It’s the weekend and during the day today there have been over ten motorboats here with party-happy and bath-hungry people on board. There has been thump thump music, laughter and shouts. Great now that it’s quiet again and only the clucking can be heard.

We have worked a lot with and on the boat in recent days. Cleaning and clearing, as usual. I’m going crazy for not having order in the boat with everything in its place. Jan has started to replace the wooden plugs in the teak deck and yesterday we glued rubber grips and handles on the dinghy that came off a long time ago. Covers for cockpit cushions and seat cushions have been washed, the outside has been washed again from algae growth. The blog and photos take time and we have, unfortunately, discovered small bugs in some of our flour, lentil and bean bags. So now we have gone through each bag thoroughly, thrown a lot into the sea, washed out of cupboards and bags, sprayed, etc. So now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that we got rid of it. Careful supervision in the future and some lockers in other parts of the boat must be checked. So everything is not paradise all the time but it is a lot of work.

And another one on land

It is quite early in the morning and we head off towards the island of Pedro Gonzales, further south. Suddenly we are surrounded by a pod of dolphins, one of which is a mother with a child. What happiness! They swim with us and play around Vilja. Wonder if they are aware we are watching them? Dolphins around the boat are among the most wonderful things there is. We drop everything we have in our hands and enjoy the view. Lucky we have an autopilot to steer for us

So luxurious with a day total vacation. Just relax, swim, listen to a book, enjoy the view and swim in the pool! We have arrived at the private island of San José and in one of the bays is a resort where we are welcome to enjoy all the facilities. Of course we paid 10 dollars each but are welcome back. The view is strikingly beautiful and the hot tub so invitingly lovely. We don’t treat ourselves to many things in our still privileged life but today we enjoy this luxury. Sparkling sea as far as the eye can see, palm trees in the foreground, an infinity pool, wine in the glass, two Toucans and colorful parrots flying above us. Can’t say anything other than that life is wonderful

It’s getting dark and the Swedish sailboat, Kerpa from Stockholm, is heading into the bay. We met in Guna Yala and now we meet again. They come over to our place for a gin & tonic at sunset and we hang out for a couple of hours before we both have to cook for today’s dinner.  We also meet the next day and now we go to the resort and enjoy the jacuzzi together. Tomorrow they start their sail towards the Marquesas, a good month’s sail without seeing either land or probably no boat.

We ourselves choose to stay for a few days. We are not in a hurry and there are several beaches to explore. I am fascinated by the colors of the sand and the crabs burrowing into the sand to hide. Here is not as amazing as in Guna Yala but it has its charm. And it is much quieter. Right now we think there are only 4 – 5 sailboats in total in the whole of Las Perlas. The water is clear and desalicizing, a little colder than in the Caribbean, the beaches are chalk white and almost completely free of bloated rubbish and it is wonderful to sometimes be alone on an entire island.

Panama Canal and Panama City

We are on our way now! A milestone and an unreal adventure. The Panama Canal…We, with little Vilja, will go through this incredibly famous and powerful canal. It is many people’s dream to check off their bucket list. In front of us, in the first locks, there will be a large cargo ship and we will be three sailboats moored behind the large ship through the three locks we pass through today. Now we are approaching the bridge, which is only about six years old. A cargo ship coming from the other direction is currently passing under it. This is a rare experience. Only a few sailboats per day and only in season.

Now we shall make our way through this mythical channel. The construction was started by France but the work was taken over by the USA and was completed in 1914. 85 years later, in 1999, Panama takes over the canal and since then another lock staircase has been built, for much larger boats.

We cross the bridge now and our three ”linehandlers” know exactly what to do. Fenders are attached, ropes are attached and they work in a great team. If not too long we shall be attached to the starboard side of the sailboat, Kivavera. Another one will be attached, on Kivavera’s port side and we will go through the locks together

We have now passed the bridge, and a big freight ship goes together with us. Beside it is one of the sailboats we will go through tha Canal together with

Locking will go through three locks. All about nine meters difference in height that we are going up, a total of about 26 meters today. The Gatun locks are the names of these three locks.

At the turn of the last century, when they were built, it was probably the largest and most difficult engineering project ever. The Panama Canal was completed in 1914 and by then over 27,000 workers had lost their lives. Most of Malaria and Yellow fever.

We are now entering the first lock. At the beginning of each lock, nine meters up, thin throwing lines are thrown down to us with a weight on them that makes it easy to reach their target, Vilja. Our line handlers attach our thick blue lines to these and they are pulled up to shore. We drive forward until we are just astern of the large freighter Arsos from Limassol. The water starts to fill up, it goes quite fast, and as we go up the line handlers pull in on the blue ropes. Suddenly we are almost nine meters higher! The lock gate, which is double, opens and we prepare to drive out the next lock. Arsos has significantly higher engine power and the water boils in front of us. Another reason for it boiling is that there is a lot of water that is displaced by the cargo ship, which only has about a dm to spare on each side of the ship to the lock walls and not so far to the bottom below. When Arsos has gone out and the water has calmed down, it’s our turn

Locking through all three locks goes smoothly, our line handlers are experienced and know what to do. And in the dark we arrive at Lake Gatún. An artificial and vast lake that fills the area between the Caribbean Locks, the Pacific Locks and the channel before the Southern Locks. We motor towards our mooring buoy in the dark. The pilots and two line handlers are up on deck. Suddenly they shout very stressed  and loudly ”port” ”port”. Jan turns as fast as he can and we pass, a few cm on our starboard side, one of the large mooring buoys, which were not lit, that are in the lake. It is large, about 2 meters in diameter, and made of hard material. Had we continued at our speed of about five knots, it would have been devastating. We exhale, think ”now we were lucky” and continue towards the buoy we were headed for, still a little shaken by the incident.

Now we are in our beds and going to sleep. The first stage has been completed and everything has gone very well. We reflect on today’s experiences and experiences. And over what a huge project this channel is and was. Think that this was started next 150 years ago and think what a change the canal made for the freighters (and sailors). The journey around the whole of South America was both incredibly long, time-consuming and, at the Land of Fire, also fraught with danger.

A trip through the giant locks is a real highlight for world travelers and sailors. It’s amazing to see how it all works. We sail boats, go by our own engine but the freighters are pulled along by small locomotives, which are called mules. Very thick wires are attached to them and several specially made locomotives pull on each side of the ship.

Panama canal
The Mula that bring the big boats foorward

Day two and we’ve gotten some sleep. Scrambled eggs, sausage and toast are served for breakfast. This is greatly appreciated. We will now get to the other side of the lake and then through the long Panama Canal. Vilja slowly slides forward through the green water. Not only is the water green, but the road is lined with beautiful greenery, birds fly low and the clouds hang heavy above us. Occasionally, the sun manages to shine through with a few rays. We understand that we are not in just any canal, but in fact the Panama Canal itself, when we meet big huge cargo ships. There should be plenty of crocodiles here, so we scout towards the vegetation that hangs over the edge of the canal. But can’t see anyone. The realization hits us that we are not only crossing right through the whole of Panama, but also right through a huge continent. From north to south, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. If you drive around, you enter a cold climate with ice, whichever direction we chose. It feels big and incomprehensible. Most people think the canal runs east to west, but if you look at the map, it’s north to south. The country of Panama lies like an S just before Central America meets South America.

Ofattbart!

We push forward by engine for many hours before we arrive at the next locks. Here, too, three pieces with a height difference of about 9 meters. Now we will be sluiced down again to sea level and out into the Pacific Ocean.  Unbelievable!

This time Vilja is alone and the other two boats are in another ”basin”. We arrive at the first lock – Pedro Miguel and now feel like experienced locksmiths 😄. Throwing lines are thrown to us and our lines are guided ashore by staff until we are secured at the front of the lock channel. We go down the lock and come out at the next lock – Miraflores. Here it is full of spectators. Many tourists, both local and from all over the world, come here to experience and see the lock work. In two large buildings, it is completely packed with spectators on two levels in both buildings. In addition, there are two tourist boats with people who experience the locking of the Panama Canal ”for real”. Our pilot makes contact with the announcer ashore and Vilja is welcomed to great cheers. Unfortunately, it is not caught on film.

Now we have only one lock left – Cockoli locks –  and the adrenaline is rising. Only one port and then we are out in the Pacific Ocean. The feeling is indescribable. None of us have ever thought about or believed that we will sail in this enormous ocean. It is such a surreal and fantastic feeling that it cannot be described in words. We have left the Atlantic and the Caribbean, which still feel quite close to Sweden, and are now on the other side of the world. Or….At least we’ll get there soon. Powerful!

To get to night port and to drop off pilots and linehandlers, we drive west. A first step into the Pacific Ocean. Linehandlers leave the pilot first and soon after. We decide to go into port, Playita, to have a calm port, shower and fill water. Inside Playita is Kivavera and we meet for a glass of wine after a successful canal crossing together.

Jan has had a lot of pain in one ear for a couple of days and last night he could hardly eat as it hurts so much to chew. For a few weeks now, I have had several inflamed wounds on my body that turn into boils that last. There are new ones all the time and they don’t heal. We decide to go to the hospital and have both of us checked by doctors.

Jan blir hänvisad in först. Strax därefter får jag komma in.

We take an Uber there and have it explained to us, via google translate, what we are looking for and that we are both looking for medical care but for different reasons. Jan is referred in first. Soon after, I get to come in. Jan then lies in hospital clothes in a hospital bed with bars on the sides. They initially intend to put me in the next room but decide to move my bed into Jan’s. Same procedure for me. Take off your clothes and put on hospital clothes. We have a hard time keeping from laughing. Imagine if it was the same way in Sweden if you search for an earache! They really take it seriously. We are the only patients and must have met at least ten staff. Nurses come to us several times. They measure blood pressure, temperature and lower at least twice each. The doctor then comes and examines both of us and states otitis media and inflamed wounds – Asepsis. We receive prescriptions for penicillin, ointments, drops and painkillers. Then we get dressed again and we’re done. Now we are a little worried about what it will cost? Should we pay for all the staff there? We had to leave a deposit of 500 usd and hope it won’t be more than that anyway. We get our deposit back and pay about SEK 800 each. Plus medicine. Not so dangerous. Now we will see if the insurance covers it or if we have a higher deductible.

It looks really serious, but for us it was difficult not to laugh loud

Men även återseenden

New Year’s Eve! And we are in Panama City! We expect a massive fireworks display around the stroke of 00. But first we will celebrate with food and wine together with the boat Kivavera from Switzerland. The boat we went through the canal with. The way we live, we make many new friends and there are many meetings and farewells. But also reunions

We prepare the starter on board Vilja and contribute fruit to the dessert as well as wine and bubbly. It’s a wonderful evening and Gabriela at Kivavera has made a delicious main course. We have just gotten to know each other and have a very nice evening with many topics of conversation, plans, laughter and anecdotes. Time flies and suddenly it’s past 11 p.m. We hear a lot of firecrackers and rockets and decide to walk to Avenida Armador, which is nearby. It is a six-kilometer stretch of road that connects a couple of small islands to the mainland and Panama City. From there, there is a fantastic view of Panama City and its famous skyline. It’s only a few minutes’ walk and all along Armador there are huge crowds of people. Firecrackers and rockets are fired everywhere and it’s completely crazy. To avoid being hit, we take cover next to a mobile home. Right in front of us is a group of younger guys and girls who have loaded with countless rockets. They bang a little before the stroke of twelve, but exactly at twelve o’clock the banging and firing become a crescendo like no other. The sky totally explodes with beautiful rockets. We are glad that we are standing with some protection because it is quite windy and both smoke and embers are all around us. Our Proseco bottle is opened and we toast 2025 together with Gabriela and Thomas. A year with many good adventures! Imagine that we are in the Pacific Ocean and have both the Galapagos and all the island nations in front of us before we reach the other side.

Must add that everyone who shot rockets and firecrackers cleaned up after themselves. They really impressed us.

But the highlight is when we walk towards the fish market and its restaurants, along the sea. After passing under the bridge that is the beginning of Avenida Armador, we are greeted by a fantastic view of the skyscrapers. A little further on, we also have all the traditional fishing boats in the foreground. A photographer’s Mecca. At least for me. I am completely enthralled by the view and feel exhilarated. It is amazing and has made my day memorable.

Unfortunately, we arrive too late to shop at the fish market but stop at one of the restaurants where we have an early dinner. Seafood of course. Afterwards we buy some food at a supermarket because tomorrow we will sail out towards the Las Perlas archipelago

Lazy days in Guna Yala

We are staying in Linton for 4 nights. The weather is not the best, but there are really strong winds and high waves on the open sea. We want to get back to Guna Yala as soon as possible but have to wait out the worst. But after 4 nights, we have decided to set out on the at least ten hour stretch. It turns out to be a tough and very long journey. We get up early in the morning and drop anchor around 7am. Our plan is to go far out to sea to try not to have the wind directly in the bow all the time. That plan goes like this…we motor sail to be able to get to our goal at all. But it will be a cross with several strokes.

Even though we love sailing, today we just want to Reach Guna Yala

For the first time since we left Sweden, I feel a little seasick.  We knew it would be a tough lake today and you can safely say that it is. The waves are really high and Vilja gets to show off. We have some sails up to balance the boat but the engine is running full blast. The cruise angle is over 130 degrees, so going under sail alone would be basically impossible. It has been blowing for over a week and there is open sea endlessly away to the Northeast where the wind is coming from.

This is a really tough stage. Vilja scrambles, jumps, stomps and flings herself from side to side. On the windward side high walls of water come towards us. But Vilja handles it well and even if it sometimes feels a little scary, we feel safe. It’s terribly uncomfortable and we have to hold on with both hands and brace ourselves with our feet to avoid being thrown around in the cockpit.

Just beautiful colours

After about eight hours of hard travel, the sea has now calmed down a bit. We no longer have to cling and Vilja plows through the waves instead of being tossed back and forth. Great! We still have almost five hours before we are in Guna Yala and can anchor for the night. It will be nice to arrive and have still water all around us. Now we hope that we can stay here and enjoy swimming, crawfish, dinghies and relaxation for a good two weeks without having to interrupt again.

Sailing on one sail when it’s getting dark

It’s almost 9pm and it’s dark. We don’t want to go into a harbor or especially a natural harbor in the dark, but today we have no alternative. There are quite a few boats in Lemmon cay and they look huge. We first think that we should lie outside all the others and avoid tricking our way in, but the water is about 40 meters deep and then we cannot anchor. Jan stands at the front on deck and shines with a searchlight, I stand behind and steer and try to follow the Navionics for reefs and shallow areas. We talk through the intercom and it’s absolutely fantastic not to have to shout and just rely on different body movements. It is crowded between the boats and it feels scary to steer in. In addition, it is still quite windy. I immediately realize, when we have passed inside a couple of boats, that we are heading straight for a reef and have to change course 90 degrees. We approach the spot we were in last time we were here and decide to drop anchor. When we let out about 40 meters of chain, we realize that we are too close to another sailboat. Just pull back up and start over. It is crowded between the boats and the wind takes hold of Vilja, but we get the anchor up and drop in again a little further away. This time we get a perfect seat. After 14 hours at sea in really rough seas, it’s nice to lie still and we go to bed soon after.

A beautiful full moonlight lightens up in the dark

The days roll by and we enjoy ourselves. This archipelago of tiny little cays is amazing! We lie still for a few days, sometimes up to six days, relax, listen to a book, take the dinghy into the small cays that lie around us, swim and enjoy life. On most cays we meet new and old boating friends. There will be one or another sundowner in a cockpit, easy conversations, laughter and exchange of experiences and plans. Many we meet here are planning to go through the channel to the Pacific. Others choose to stay up to six months in San Blas. We met a boat last year that had been staying here for six years! I myself would have liked to stay here much longer than we have, but the channel is booked on December 28 so our time is limited.

Lovely sunset

It’s not just sun, swimming and relaxation on board. We live aboard a boat that is used all the time and there is a long todo list. And it never ends. When one thing is done, two new musts appear. Keeping the boat clean in the waterline is a constantly ongoing job, e.g. The watermaker works now (take wood), but the radar and autopilot don’t work right now. New calibration has to be done which Jan needs to familiarize himself with. New installations have been done that way and before we got everything technically ready the autopilot doesn’t work so it was manual control the day before yesterday. We hope to get it sorted before we head back to Shelter bay. The first stage is 10 hours away and it will be tough to steer. We even know a boat that steered by hand in strong winds for many days, so of course it works.

Every day boats come up to us selling all sorts of things. We buy pineapples and several crawfish one day and an eight-armed octopus another day. The crawfish are always fantastically good, but I didn’t succeed with the squid. Even though it was boiled in water and vinegar for a long time. Maybe we’ll have time to try again.

The small traditional sailboats are really nice o see

Troligen i Shelter bay.

There are probably some of you who are wondering how our little pet is doing –  the mouse that patterned on. Probably in Shelter bay. We can’t believe where it went. We have searched in nooks and crannies but can’t find any mice or mouse droppings. Mouse trap is loaded but no visitors – despite Snickers as bait. Jan says mice love Snickers. If we’re lucky, it’s patterned off. Just can’t understand when or how in that case. After all, we have been out at sea and no mice jump into the sea on their own unless we are about to sink. The other day we listened to Titanic with Mikael Wiehe and heard the phrase ”Then the rats leave the ship to seek land” But we are not Titanic and we float. Hopefully it’s not lying dead somewhere…ugh what a smell it would quickly become in this heat

We are at our last anchorage in Guna Yala. Western Hollandaise. The water is calm and there are only a few other boats here. Among other things, we arranged a meeting with the Swedish Cordelia with Henric and Lena on board. We buy fish from a Guna Yala Indian and in the evening we make our way to one of the islands with a chalk white beach. We have a grill with us and make a fire with brought charcoal and dried coconuts that we find ashore. It is a magical evening with good food, pleasant company and a fantastic view. We want to stay here a loooong time

Today is the last day in paradise. Tomorrow we have to make our way towards Shelter bay with a stop for a night in Linton. It’s a bit hazy but we make the most of the day. Jan is currently out snorkelling while I sit on the front deck enjoying myself. Up here on the deck it’s nice to have a breeze and it’s the only place in the boat where you can have some alone time. It is one of the things I miss. We have opened a bottle of cold white wine and it is a luxury to be in the water, soak up the atmosphere, reflect on the life we live and at the same time drink some wine in the crystal clear sea.

In a few days, a big new adventure awaits. We will go through the channel and come out into the huge Pacific Ocean. Of course, there are some sailboats that make that trip, but there are still relatively few. Only a few a day. It is an adventure that we can hardly fathom that we are going to do.

Time to leave for Panama

Today, work is going on frantically. Vilja must be ready for departure after 6 months in port. Jan has been up on deck since early this morning. The dinghy has been lashed down with things on top, Vilja has been washed, last filling of water, everything loose must be lashed down or cleaned away in the stowage spaces, some final sewing, etc., etc. Inside the boat, I have sea stowed and lashed down boxes and freezers. All the vegetables we bought yesterday are washed in water with vinegar to reduce the risk of small animals we don’t want on board, and placed either in nets or wooden boxes. Tomorrow we finally sail on! As much as we love Cartagena o Colombia, we long for new destinations and experiences. We have just over two days until Shelter Bay, where we must check into Panama and pay for our transit through the Panama Canal. It’s expensive…very expensive. After payment, we sail a little back again towards the San Blas or Guna Yala archipelago. The GunaYala Indians live there and live in the same way as they have for centuries.

We have left Cartagena! Now we are out on the open sea with the bow pointed towards Panama. In about two days we will dock in Shelter bay where we will clear in. The sun is shining and the winds are weak, unfortunately right at us so for now it’s motoring. It’s wonderful to have gotten away, although we have really loved Cartagena and Colombia

Finally we leave Cartagena

On open sea

Darkness has enveloped Vilja. I’m on my first night shift in six months. It feels safe and familiar. Vilja steers at a good 5 knots straight into the black night. The moon hasn’t risen yet so it’s really pitch black. The only thing that can be heard is the noise from the sea as it hits Vilj’s body, the wind that rattles the sails and something annoying that hits inside the boat. I think it’s a bag of hygiene items in the bathroom. I just went on duty and will be sitting here for seven hours now. It’s a lot of hours but it’s relaxing. Think that a little over three years ago I had never sailed at night. Now it’s the nights I appreciate the most.

A couple of hours later and a large moon lights up the sky and sea. The compact darkness has turned into a magical light show. The sea sparkles with gold and silver and the clouds are illuminated by the spherical moon. Imagination flows over different formations. This is a life we love. Out at sea with nature as a force and as a spectacle.

New day and the wind has completely died down. The sails are down again and we are motoring. It will be a motor all the way to Shelter bay in Panama. We cross the entrance to the canal and outside are hundreds of cargo boats. Either they wait to go through the channel or they must go into the port city of Colon to pick up or drop off cargo. It is powerful with all the huge cargo boats and we are thinking of the option of going around the whole of South America or Tierra del Fuego, which is the only option to transport all the goods.

We are getting close to the canal and there are big boats everywhere

Now we are in the marina and tomorrow we have to pay the agent to go through the canal in about a month. It’s expensive…very expensive. almost SEK 42,000. But on the other side, a whole lot of new adventures await. Checking into Panama was very easy. Of course, we had to go into Colon to get a document, but then everything went quickly and it was, for a change, free. Today we have crossed the canal and the entrance to the canal three times. First with Vilja on the way to the marina and then by taxi over a bridge to and from Colon. I think I need to write it many times to understand that it is true.

It will be three days in Shelter bay. Days when we got a lot fixed, but above all we met Viveka and Erik at Embla. Great to see you again and talk about our adventures and plans. The last time we saw each other was in Cuba. Now our paths diverge significantly as we choose different directions on the other side of the channel. We first sail south and then west while Embla plans north before going west.

Now we have left the port and are heading towards the Guna Yala island group, also called San Blas. It is a group of hundreds of small islands. Many uninhabited but some inhabited by the Guna Indians. Here they live primitively and have fishing and coconut picking as their main livelihood.

Preparations and carnival in Cartagena

We have been back in Cartagena for about a week. Cartagena – Club de Pesca. It’s so hot here, so unbelievably hot…We haven’t had any flow on the jetty mostly since Thursday. It is now Monday afternoon. The sweat runs down the body and the salt stings the eyes and wounds on the body. We change clothes 3-4 times a day as the ones we wear get soaked. Inside the boat it is around 36 degrees warm and outside even warmer. No gust of wind. We have fans and that helps but is definitely not enough. Right now I would like to experience minus 25 degrees – at least for a quarter of an hour. We buy cans of drinking water and they quickly run out. Cola as well. The work ethic is not great. There is simply nothing that can be done. The heat takes a toll on us during the day. Luckily, we had electricity at night. Our AC is set to 19 degrees, but it’s still just under 30 degrees at night. The sea warms from below and the air from above.

Atlanten tog 19 dagar.

A few days later. From the heat to torrential rain and coolness. Now we only have 26.4 degrees inside the boat….with air conditioner at 17 degrees. It’s cool and nice and we can work a little bit. The electrical cabinet is fixed after there was a fire there due to the bow thruster in May and some cabinets are sorted. We really try to use every cm in the boat for food and practical things. All colanders are opened side by side so we can place coffee, oatmeal, jam or flour under etc.  Everything is expensive in the Pacific so we stock up. Our guests for the first 3 months across the Pacific, Marie and Niklas, have bought tickets now. They will arrive in Panama on January 27. We have also started stocking up for the time they are with us. First about 7 days to the Galapagos.  And we hope the authorities will let us in there….there are strict rules. Then about 4-5 weeks out on the open sea before we arrive at the Marquesas in French Polynesia. It will definitely be the longest distance at sea without land contact. Over 30 days. The Atlantic took 19 days.

Pacific – Stilla Havet. O det vattnet skall vi segla över…

Pacific is sooooo big. You can’t even imagine it. The Atlantic becomes almost like Mediterranean in comparison. We are used to seeing a map with the Atlantic a little to the left and then America and Europe, Asia and Africa. If we turn the globe over, there is almost only water. Pacific – Pacific Ocean. O that water we shall sail across…

Karneval!

Carnival! Or actually a festival that feels like a carnival. Cartagena celebrates Independence and they do it big in the four days. Today is the first day and there is a carnival train on Pencer boulevard which is close to the old part of town. People flock there and the congestion is great. Most of them are armed with a large pipe where they spray foam at each other. There is dancing, laughing and spraying foam everywhere. Around the feet, they pop firecrackers and we only have feet in sandals and flip-flops. We’re all a little afraid of getting firecrackers thrown at us. At the same time, the carnival procession is going on with large dancing groups in beautiful clothes. And beautiful exotic women in amazing carnival costumes. We have managed to get a seat close to the judges so we get to see their dance properly. It’s a party, it’s joy, it’s colorful and it’s dancing! All of Cartagena bursts with excitement, mischief and rhythm. We are showered with foam several times and share the rush of joy with everyone else.

Party, party, party!
Everyone is dancing

Now it’s the next day of the celebration and hundreds, maybe thousands of boats are gathering in long lines behind barriers. A large stage is built and directed towards the sea. There are big movie screens like at big concerts. We take our dinghy and paddle out together with Peter from the boat Porrima.  Since we are such a small boat, we decide to paddle in front of all the other boats and lay right in front of the stage. We are met by waves, cheers, cheers and are sprayed with foam by all the happy and party-hungry people in the boats that we paddle in front of. We find a free small hatch and lift up the cordon so we are on the right side. The concert begins and the party is on. On one boat the beer runs out and they ask us if we can paddle ashore with them and buy more. Of course we will help. In the meantime, I remain in the boat we are helping. The artists replace each other and after a few hours one of Colombia’s biggest artists comes on stage. The cheers rise in a crescendo and the joy among everyone knows no bounds. It is a very successful afternoon and evening and we are satisfied when we paddle back.

It’s getting  late and we start our way back to the boat

Today we are out sailing! Lovely! The wind is fresh but the sailboat Porrima from Holland with Peter as captain handles the wind and waves excellently. It’s  Beneteau 50 Cence. He has bought new sails that have arrived and the standing rig has been replaced, so today it is test sailing with fine tuning. Two knowledgeable people are on board and checking. Everything seems to be fine. We met Porrima in Cuba and have been hanging out since Jamaica. It is wonderful to be out at sea for a couple of hours. It fans and moves. Can’t wait until we leave in about 1 week.

Last stop Amazonas

Now we fly south. Down to the southernmost corner of Colombia where three countries meet – Colombia, Brazil and Peru. There are no roads here as it is the Amazon rainforest that dominates, far, far around. All transport therefore takes place by boat and a few air connections.  The city we fly to is called Leticia

The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest and covers 7 million km² in a total of 9 countries. From here you can go west towards Peru and Ecuador and east through the whole of Brazil all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

When we get here it is the end of the dry season and the water is as low as it can be. Many small tributaries have dried up and boats and buildings are perched on the large sandbanks. But there is still water in the larger tributaries and we have decided on a three-day trip into the Amazon to a small village located in Peru.

Now we are waiting, together with our guide Mike, for the boat that will take us from Colombia to our adventure. It is full of life on the river with boats transporting people and goods. On the other side of the water, just a few hundred meters away is Peru. This is the house where we will stay for 2 nights

Our first day consists of two hikes in the forest. One in the day and one in the dark in the evening. We dress in long pants and long sleeves plus tall rubber boots to protect us from poisonous insects, mosquitoes and snakes. The day before, a tourist stepped on a poisonous snake. It bit him at the top of the boot shaft, so luckily he survived. It crunches underfoot as we walk through the now dry rainforest. It is hard to imagine that there will be water all the way up here in six months. Now it’s terribly hot and we’re dripping with sweat. The clothes are soaked through and the eyes sting from the salty sweat. Mike is amazingly good at finding animals in the forest. Mostly insects. We see large furry tarantulas, black scorpions, monkeys and lots of different birds. He is also knowledgeable about all trees and what they are used for. It is killertree, irontree, rubbertree, etc. Many of the trees are 300 – 400 years old and huge.

The next day we paddle out with a boat on the Amazon and fish. It is incredibly hot to sit in the scorching sun without shade or the slightest breeze. The fish nibble directly on our bait, but it’s hard to get any fish up as they don’t bite around the small hook. Suddenly it snaps at me and I get a piranha on the hook. It follows up but unfortunately lets go just before it reaches the boat. At least now we have seen a piranha. After three hours Mike has managed to catch four fish and we go back to our village sweaty but satisfied and happy. There we are served a good lunch.

Hammocks hang under our house and there we recover for a few hours before the afternoon and evening hike. The village is small and simple. There is no electricity here except in the few houses that have a generator or solar panels which they use sparingly. No wifi either. Everyone works all day fishing, hunting, farming or household chores. They live more or less from hand to mouth

The supermoon wad absolutely fantastic

Put the boots back on and we set off on a long and strenuous hike. These boots are terribly uncomfortable and hard to walk in. But they protect us so we just have to bite the bullet. The goal is a lake in the middle of the jungle. We are tired when we arrive but it is amazingly beautiful! A deep lake surrounded by greenery, water lilies floating on the water with big, big leaves, an incredibly rich birdlife and after a while a magical sunset that changes to a big Supermoon. As soon as darkness falls, the caymans crawl out of their hiding places. Wherever we point the flashlights, their eyes are reflected with a red glow. We’re out paddling and Mike bends down and picks up a small caiman that we get to hold. It’s gaze is completely still, as if paralyzed, when we hold it around its neck and tail with two hands. This excursion is amazing and will be the highlight of your Amazon adventure.

On the third day, I stay in the hammock when Jan and Mike set off on another hike. I can’t bear to walk around in big boots again. My feet are tired after the hike and so am I. They see many monkeys, a sloth and even more insects. Jan is satisfied and happy when he returns.

After lunch we set off back towards Leticia. On the way we see lots of pink dolphins. They don’t swim in packs and play in the water like the Dolphins we see in the ocean. These are blind as the water is so brown and come up only for short moments to get air. The dolphins are born gray and become more and more pink as they get older. Today these Dolphins are unfortunately endangered so it is extra fun to see them. Despite several attempts, none of us manages to capture them in a picture.

We have one day left in Leticia before flying back to Cartagena and our boat Vilja tomorrow. Then we take the opportunity to make an excursion to the city of Santa Rosa in Peru. It’s a short boat ride across the river and then a tuctuc ride on the sandbars. There are no border controls between Colombia,  Peru and Brazil here, just go over. The village is small and charming. We walk around a bit and then sit down at a restaurant where we drink a Caiprinha each and eat a really good lunch. Then we go back to Colombia again. There we stop and watch a ”soccer international” between Peru and Colombia on the grass. There is a lot of audience and it is loved to the fullest

Back in our room, we use the property’s swimming pool. It feels very luxurious and wonderful to be able to swim again. We haven’t done that since we sailed on the south coast of Cuba last spring.

We had a lovely time in the swimmingpool after our daytrip to Santa Rosa in Peru

Tomorrow we fly back to Cartagena. Now we wait a few weeks with provisions and preparing Vilja so we can sail towards San Blas in Panama.
